BOOKS

The gift of a great book The Thursday Murder Cub Richard Osman Retirees Elizabeth, Joyce, Ibrahim and Ron have a unique set of skills that they put to good use solving old murder cases. So when a real murder takes place rather close to home, the four are well placed to find the killer. Funny, warm and with a twist every minute, The Thursday Murder Club will keep readers guessing right until the end. Best of all, a sequel is already in the pipeline.

Word Perfect: Etymological Entertainment for Every Day of the Year Susie Dent Ever wondered who the original Jack the lad was? Or where a phrase like ‘turn a blind eye’ came from? Susie Dent has been a regular expert on Countdown for twenty-five years. In Word Perfect, she reveals the story behind some well-known words and phrases and introduces the reader to a whole load of new ones. (Personally, we might start calling a hankie by its Victorian slang name – a snottinger.)

The Boy Who Grew Dragons Andy Shepherd Looking for a book for a seven to nine year old? The Boy Who Grew Dragons is likely to be appeal to even reluctant readers. Tomas discovers an unusual plant when he’s helping out in his grandparents’ garden. It turns out to be a dragon fruit tree and the fruit is about to hatch. Before long, Tomas is learning all about his new pet, from the fact it loves broccoli to the unfortunate fact that dragon poo is highly explosive.

Flavour Yotam Ottolenghi and Ixta Belfrage If you’re buying for someone who loves nothing more than spending a couple of hours in the kitchen cooking up a storm, this is the gift for them. It is not, however, a cookery book for beginners or those wanting to

whip up a quick and easy dish. The ingredients aren’t always easy to come by and most of the recipes are experimental to say the least. The dishes are not always vegetarian, but fruit, vegetables or fungi are the star ingredients, and often used in rather surprising ways. Lime and Coconut Potato Gratin anyone?

My Garden World Monty Don Wildlife fans will adore My Garden World, which is basically Monty Don’s personal homage to the birds, insects and other creatures that share his garden. The book is packed with interesting nuggets of information about British wildlife and is a real pleasure to read (particularly when sat in the garden with a cuppa). If you want to really earn some brownie points, team it with a few packets of wildflower seeds and a pair of binoculars.

BAKING

Gingerbread biscuits

Since medieval times Gingerbread has been a feature of Christmas and Winter Feasts. These Christmas gingerbread biscuits have a delicious ginger and cinnamon flavour and a great snap. Cut with Christmas shaped cutters to make great gifts or fabulous decorations to hang on the Christmas tree.

Ingredients

1

Melt the sugar, golden syrup and butter in a saucepan. Leave to cool for a few minutes.

• 175g dark muscovado sugar

2

Put flour, bicarbonate of soda and spices into a large bowl. Add the warm syrup mixture and the egg, stir everything together, then gently knead in the bowl until smooth. Wrap in cling film and chill for at least 30 mins.

3

Remove the dough from the fridge, leave at room temperature until softened. Heat oven to 200C/ 180C fan/ gas 6 and line two baking trays with baking parchment.

4

Roll out the dough to the thickness of a £1 coin then cut out gingerbread people or shapes with a cutter. Re-roll and keep cutting until all dough is used up.

5

Place biscuits on the trays and bake for 10-12mins. Leave to cool on the trays for 5 mins then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely. Decorate with water icing.

• 85g golden syrup • 100g butter • 350g plain flour, plus extra for dusting • 1 tsp bicarbonate of soda • 1 tbsp ground ginger • 1 tsp ground cinnamon • 1 egg • Icing sugar to decorate

This recipe is taken from the community ‘Baking for the NHS’ recipe book, which brings together a collection of recipes from 40 local bakers who supplied sweet treats to the NHS throughout lockdown. Copies of the book are available from Daisy Maison for £9.

CUBS AND SCOUTS LOCKDOWN REPORT

“Be prepared”

Who could be prepared for the pandemic? The Group Scout leaders had their annual dinner on the 14th of March and three days later had to cancel cub scout meetings until further notice. Initially we thought that our early April trip to the Guildford fire station would just be postponed for a few weeks - but now it has been forgotten in the haze of lockdown. By the end of April we had our first cub scout zoom meeting to test the water for cubs to have a pack meeting via the internet and to also renew our cub scout promise. I promise that I will do my best to do my duty to God and to the Queen, to help other people and to keep the Cub Scout Law With the aim of helping at home, the first badge that we did online was the “Chef Activity Badge”, aimed at getting the cubs to think about food - hygiene and what they eat. The cubs planned a balanced two course meal to cook for their family with the first step being to identify not just their own favourite but their family’s too! The vegetable, carb and protein would be entered into google and we found some fastic recipes: “Asparagus migas and grilled pork” – well worth a try. Doing badges online meant that different games had to be planned and instead of the usual running around as much as possible, we had to think of ways to keep the cubs occupied while sitting in the same place. Kitchen Risk Bingo proved a hit - and was educational too alongside our new favourite game – know your chocolate, by identifying the type of chocolate bar from a cross section. We went on to do the Homehelp badge, which appeared to the cubs to have been planned by their parents so that they would keep their bedrooms clean. This was followed by the

Aviation badge, with a local BA pilot kindly joining us online to tell us about his job and especially how it has changed under lockdown. Cub Q&A sessions are always the most entertaining. One badge that the cubs will have earned is the Computer badge, as each week they are able to display a new feature of zoom that they have found to amuse themselves. Now, over six months down the line, and with strict guidelines we have been given the go ahead to have face to face evening outdoors meetings again. So with the pack split into groups of 4, diligent social distancing and an armful of paperwork we have had our first two evening hikes. Rain coats and torches will be a must going forward over the winter period – we will be prepared. Are you prepared? We are always keen for new helpers. If you are interested in helping out as either a full or part time assistant leader or on the group executive committee then please email dcguildfordeastscouts@gmail.com

ST MARTIN’S CHURCH EAST HORSLEY KT24 6RL

PART OF THE HORSLEY, OCKHAM & DOWNSIDE GROUP MINISTRY

From the Rector... If times were ordinary, I would be using this letter to invite you to our Remembrance Sunday Service and Christmas Services and activities. However, as we all know we are not living in ordinary times. As I write at the end of September – the rule of six is in place and many other restrictions make it difficult to know exactly what we will be able to offer you towards the end of the year. However, there is a constant which is summarised by the Church of England Christmas campaign called ‘Comfort and Joy’. It’s the comfort Jesus brings to those who have lost loved ones or livelihoods, or who are still not able to be together with loved ones. It is our role as a church to provide consolation in whatever way we can. At the same time, we want to celebrate the Joy that Christmas offers. We will do that either in church (if we are able) or on-line (or both). From September we began to enjoy services again in Church, with strict regulations to ensure 2 metre distancing and functioning track and trace. The best way to know what we are able to offer week by week is via our website www.easthorsleychurch.org.uk and to follow us on Facebook and Twitter. You can also join our mailing list – just send me an email (rector@ easthorsleychurch.org.uk) and we will add you. Whatever Christmas holds for each of us this year, I want to remind you that no matter what might be going on in our lives, whatever restrictions we may or may not be under, Jesus comes to us as a baby; a baby who grew up to be the Saviour of the world. He is often referred to as Immanuel that means God is with us. I pray that brings some comfort. I wish you and your loved ones every Comfort and Joy this Christmas. May you look to the New Year with renewed hope.

Horsley Choral Society A centenary of song This September Horsley Choral Society were to be celebrating 100 years of making music in the Horsleys - whilst group singing has been on hold - we look back at the history of this local group. In September 1920, Horsley resident Mr Harold H. Coote wrote to several of his fellow villagers asking them to become either members or vice-presidents of a new choral group.

Harold H.Coote and his wife Mabel

A donation of one guinea bestowed the honour of being vice president and one of the earliest to respond to Mr Coote’s letter was Tommy Sopwith (of Camel fame) who lived at Horsley Towers. In the years following, ‘The Horsley Glee Party’ held concerts in the local village hall and following a fortuitous name change finally became ‘Horsley Choral Society’ In 1930 the choir, under conductor W.H. Maelor Jones, joined the Leith Hill Musical Festival, founded by Margaret Vaughan Williams and Evangeline Farrer and conducted by Ralph Vaughan Williams at the new Dorking Halls. The choir continues to be a LHMF choir to this day. Currently HCS numbers approximately seventy mixed voices, meeting in East Horsley Village Hall on Monday evenings. The choir sings and performs a wide variety of choral and other music at LHMF, twice yearly HCS concerts and also by invitation at various festivals and special

events. HCS have toured in Europe, regularly sing at Eton College and often sing with other choirs. Val Beynon is the current Musical Director for the choir. Val enjoyed music from an early age - and after attending Dartington College of Arts she studied at Rolle College, Exmouth following a course for musical education in schools. She continued her singing studies and achieved her ARCM in singing teaching. In 1970 she moved to Oxshott and took up a career in teaching. Increasingly involved in community life, Val formed several local choirs including re-founding the Oxshott Choral Society in 1975. Thanks to Val, Horsley Choral Society and Oxshott Choral Society are now firm friends and have performed together on many occasions in St John’s School Chapel in Leatherhead. Since 2015 we have held our concerts at St Andrew's Church in Cobham which has proved to be a lovely venue for choir and audience alike. Significant funds have also been raised for various charities. Whilst there will not be a concert this year here are five suggestions of some wonderful choral music to listen to this Christmas: Handel’s Messiah, Bach’s Magnificat, Vivaldi’s Gloria, plus some lovely carols, Candlelight Carol by Rutter, O Little one Sweet arranged by Bach, and of course O Come all ye Faithful. We hope to be able to bring some Christmas cheer on the green in East Horsley on December 5th in the morning. The choir will hold a centenary dinner for members and friends on 22nd May 2021. We are planning to start back singing from October 26th meeting at 8pm on Mondays in East Horsley Village Hall. If you would like more information about the choir, please contact : 01483 282544

The Horsleys Farmers Market

A Volunteer’s View

When I was invited to join the Horsley Farmers Market organising team I happily agreed. With experience in marketing food festivals and food related businesses online, I knew it would be a good fit for me. It was also an opportunity to be involved in a volunteer project that would introduce me to people in the Horsley villages that I wouldn’t normally cross paths with. Very shortly after I launched the social media campaign the country went into lockdown due to Covid-19, and so it became clear that the Inaugural Farmers Market would not be held on 18 April as planned. By the time we were able to launch the Farmers Market on 15 August, the organising volunteers had formed a strong team, each member working hard to achieve a shared goal. We have regular online meetings to go over all the details, and we are united in our commitment to deliver a monthly event that provides a good mix of local food, drink and craft stalls. I particularly enjoy meeting with the marketing team, developing ideas for promoting the event in an engaging way, and strengthening relationships with the village retail community as well as our stallholders and visitors from Horsley and the surrounding villages. Another important group is our ‘On the Day’ volunteers who join us to ensure the event runs

smoothly. From helping to manage parking, to spraying hands with sanitiser at the entrance to the market, there are many tasks and each one has a community volunteer assigned to it. In the words of volunteer Ingrid Clift: “I really enjoy being a volunteer at HFM, it is fun to be part of this community initiative, meeting new people, sampling delish foods and buying new products and fresh produce. It also brings back lovely memories of going to market day with the family, albeit in sunny South Africa. It makes me feel this truly is my home away from home.” We often say we are ‘in our community, for our community’ and our focus is not just on delivering a successful Farmers Market, but also on showcasing all that the Horsley villages have to offer. While many of our stallholders have already become regulars, the team strives to make each month’s market unique. Looking ahead, we are planning a December Market which will be a festive occasion including carol singers and other seasonal family activities in a special Christmas village day. It has been a pleasure to be involved in this volunteer project, even if it sometimes feels like a full time job! Alyson Reay, West Horsley

PETS

Dear Santa Paws, I’ve been a good boy this year, apart from the cowpat incident. I’ve been vigilant about chasing squirrels (it’s good exercise for me you know) and it’s months since I last dug a hole in my dad’s prize lawn. Last year’s bag of dog biscuits was nice, although the ‘breath control’ labelling didn’t go unnoticed. This year I think it would help you if I give you some ideas. Firstly, can I have some human stuff that I’m actually not supposed to play with? You know: socks, shoes, a topof-the-range sporting equipment, or a human pillow – because doggie pillows are just not the same. Then I’d love an automatic belly rubber. My humans are good, but I want so much more – belly rubs are the absolute best. Finally, a special request: if anyone has put dog fancy dress clothes on their list, please tell them the workshop had sold out. Especially if they included dog antlers. PS: If you bring chocolates for my humans, please put them out of my reach because they are poisonous for me. Yours,

BLANKETS WITHOUT BORDERS

Ingrid Clift shares the story of the growth of community knitting project Blankets without Borders (BWB) started in 2017 when Ingrid Clift, a local carer, saw a need in the community for isolated people to have a meaningful collaborative activity - and with the backing and support of Matthew and Lucinda Kalupka of Home Counties Carers had the vision to get people knitting with purpose. The group provides warm, cheerful, comforting knitted blankets to those that have been affected by homelessness, some finished blankets have gone to Guildford Action, local children’s homes or shelters for domestic abuse. The scheme quickly grew and there are currently up to 100 participants spanning a few generations - the youngest is about 15 and the oldest recently passed away at 99. Knitting unites everyone. In addition to the blanket squares, they knit shawls for the elderly who might sit all day in an armchair - and also make “fiddle muffs” for those with dementia.

the pandemic. Alongside looking after her grandchildren, she knitted BWB a blanket – Go Granny, or as they call her in Poland: Go Babcia! Whilst some people have joined the group because they feel isolated and having some purpose has helped them, others are managing a busy lifestyle and help in small ways just donating wool or helping with collections. There is a place for everyone, with the reward that the teamwork results in someone receiving a comforting knit steeped in the kindness of the group. Please do follow Blankets without Borders on Facebook or find them in the village - sharing office space with Home Counties Carers – the front door is between The Bakery and Woking Hospice. Call in and say hi - or ring them and they will pop a postcard with the blanket pattern in the post for you. Everyone welcome!

Covid-19 pandemic has resulted in BWB booming. Ingrid said “we’ve had kind and generous BWB knitters who have produced so much - our storage units are full as we hurtle towards winter. Supporters even knitted us delightful rainbows and kept our windows at Home Counties Carers bright and cheerful throughout the pandemic! Sincere thanks to East Horsley WI - who received an SOS from us at one point during lock down as we were drowning in brightly coloured knitted squares, they came bounding back with positive enthusiasm and turned our squares into blankets... and continue to sew squares into blankets for us.” Alongside the local community BWB has attracted some members from far and wide. A knitter living in Ireland sent squares knitted with wool that was 30 years’ – certainly a case of waste not, want not! One Polish Granny came to the UK to help her daughter, who is a carer, with childcare during

BIG THANKS to ALL our BWB knitters... you’ve been marvellous, absolutely marvellous during this pandemic and clearly show no signs of slowing down... You ROCK!
