Big-time books

BOOKS

This issue we have three titles to look out for that are brimming with imagination and creativity. moments into a sweet, clever, and poignant story, with each lesson building off the previous information and skills presented. Published by Ten Speed Press on 5 July.

Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow Gabrielle Zevin Two kids meet in a hospital gaming room in 1987 and their love of video games becomes a shared world -- of joy, escape and fierce competition.

The Comic Book Lesson Mark Crilley Perhaps the one distraction for younger readers when it comes to tutorials is the fact that many of them are just a little… well, boring. Thus, to present the subject matter in a way that guides someone through a story, as well as building practice, knowledge and confidence, is to be applauded. That’s what illustrator and graphic novelist Mark Crilley has done across two books now – the hugely successful The Drawing Lesson; and now this follow-up, The Comic Book Lesson. The book follows the story of Emily, an enthusiastic young comics fan and aspiring creator who has a story she needs to tell. A series of friends help her blend these teaching

When, eight years later, the pair spot each other in a crowded train station, they are catapulted back to that moment. The spark is immediate, and together they get to work on what they love - making games to delight, challenge and immerse players, as well as finding an intimacy in digital worlds that eludes them in their real lives. Their collaborations make them superstars.

This is the story of the perfect worlds Sadie and Sam build, the imperfect world they live in, and of everything that comes after success: money, fame, publicity, tragedy. Published by Penguin Books on 14 July.

The House of Fortune by Jessie Burton The sequel to Jessie Burton’s million-copy bestseller The Miniaturist. In the golden city of Amsterdam, in 1705, Thea Brandt is turning 18, and she is ready to welcome adulthood with open arms. At the city’s theatre, Walter, the love of her life, awaits her, but at home in the house on the Herengracht, all is not well – her father Otto and Aunt Nella argue endlessly, and the Brandt family are selling their furniture in order to eat. On Thea’s birthday, also the day that her mother Marin died, the secrets from the past begin to overwhelm the present, and so unravels The House of Fortune - a glorious, sweeping story of fate and ambition, secrets and dreams, and one young woman’s determination to rule her own destiny. Published by Picador on 7 July.

First classs c r e at i o n Across the country, postbox toppers have become a growing trend. We tracked down Joni van Olst who has been behind beautiful creations in our own village and asked her a few questions: How did you learn to knit? I was first taught to crochet by my Dutch grandmother when I was 5 and then basic knitting by my mother soon after. Both took a back seat when I got into sewing in my early teens, but I've always knitted and crocheted odd bits. I often make up my own patterns but frustratingly forget to write down what I'm doing, so replicating them becomes a challenge! What gave you the idea to do postbox toppers? Last year Roshini, the postmistress on station parade, asked if anyone would make a Christmas topper and I thought it would be fun, so I volunteered. I did a trial run making one for Remembrance Day and so it began.

FEATURE ARTICLE

Which has been your favourite? I love them all, but Remembrance Day stands out because it had poppies from my Dad's funeral wreath (he was a Beaufigther pilot in WWII); the donkey in the nativity scene stole my heart; the Valentine roses were a joy to make, as were the spring daffodils and clearly someone loved the Easter bunny and eggs, as many got nicked. What benefits are there to knitting? Besides the joy of creating pretty things, I have arthritis and it really helps to keep the joints moving. Have you got more ideas for the future? Following the Jubilee topper, which the ladies from the Glad Rags group have also contributed to, I will then be moving house so will focus on getting settled, but I reckon some pumpkins might appear in October - unless something else takes my fancy before then!

Thank you Joni - your toppers have brought a lot of joy to folks in Horsley - and we all look forward to future projects! To advertise email sales@thehorsleydirectory.co.uk or call 01483 338 288

Allot to be said...

GARDENING

Nowadays, as well as the practical benefit of growing our own crops, there are also a number of additional benefits for having an allotment you can lovingly call your own:

Self-sufficiency - Growing our own food cuts down on the carbon footprint of bringing it to our tables through the retail and consumer sector. Green spaces - The demand for green spaces amongst the hustle and bustle of urban life means that as an eco trend, these patches of land are really doing their bit.

Workout - Just 30 minutes of gardening on your allotment can burn around 150 calories.

Inner health - Spending time out under the sun will improve your body’s vitamin D levels, warding off illnesses and boosting serotonin levels.

Wildlife - Allotments are essential habitats for wildlife. By cultivating an allotment, you are helping to keep the local biodiversity level stable. Just one square metre of land can support hundreds of species. Social life - And of course, allotments are a hive of chat, gossip and good conversation, where simple greetings or elongated conversations are in plentiful supply… all depending on your mood, of course. Applying for an allotment Simply head to your local council website and you’ll find a section for allotments and how to apply for one.

Rising price of food - While carrots, lettuces, onions and beans aren’t particularly expensive, the idea of feeding ourselves for free is one that appeals to a very primal part of who we are.

Friends of Horsley Station

FEATURE ARTICLE

Horsley Information Hub in station waiting room

Horsley Cycles Garden. Pictured from right to left are Horsley Cycles owner John Tindall, FoHSY and West Horsley Parish Councillor Mel Beynon, FoHSY Olaf Karlsen, Fiona Richardson of Fiona Richardson Designs (who kindly masterminded, cleared and planted the garden all free of charge), FoHSY Co Lead Stephen Groom and of course Horsley Station Master Richard Bunce and George.

Stephen Groom, Co-Lead of Friends of Horsley Station and EHPC Railway Task Group, shares the work of this small group. “Horsley and Ockham and Ripley” station first opened for business on 2 February 1885. Then after a relatively sleepy 135 years, quite independently, a station master in a million called Richard (and his dog George) arrived courtesy of South Western Railway (SWR) and the Friends of Horsley Station (FoHSY) was formed by East Horsley Parish Council (EHPC). By a happy coincidence, both had a passion for upgrading the experience of using Horsley Station and integrating this key transport hub into the community it served. The FoHSY quickly acquired members from its two key communities, East and West Horsley. The group also joined the SWR station adoption programme which makes expertise and funds available from SWR Community Rail for station enhancement schemes. Richard set to work transforming Horsley Station’s spaces, introducing station history

displays, book and jigsaw lending schemes and colourful window boxes to name but a few. He welcomes all travellers with a smiling face and always has time for a friendly word. Alongside its long-term plans like the campaigns for step free access for London bound customers and upgraded and fully accessible toilets, FoHSY’s successes include numerous new planters, bird boxes (from which 10 blue tits have recently hatched) and re-wilded platform borders. Two recent projects that have been very much FoHSY/Richard and George team efforts. In the main waiting room an information display cabinet forms part of a new Horsley Information Hub operated in conjunction with the kind help of Horsley Countryside Preservation Society. On the station apron a newly created “Horsley Cycles Garden” has added a bank of colour and welcoming cheer which has been very well received.

BAKING

A summer pudding At Grace and Flavour, the Horsleys community garden, some wonderful berries are in season. Here’s a recipe that makes the most of their glorious flavours and colours.

Ingredients

1

Rinse the fruits and place in a pan with the sugar. Cook over a medium heat for just a few minutes until the sugar has dissolved and the juices begin to run (be careful not to overcook) then remove the pan from the heat and stir in the cordial. Set aside to cool.

2

Trim one slice of bread to fit the base of a lightly buttered 1 litre pudding basin and then cut other slices to line the sides, overlapping the slices and sealing well by pressing the edges together.

3

Put one cup of the fruit and juice mixture aside and then spoon the remainder into the bread lined pudding basin. Cut a final circle of bread to cover the top. Find a small plate or saucer that fits neatly inside the bowl then weigh down with a heavy object on top (tins of beans are good for this) and leave in the fridge overnight.

4

When ready to serve, use a knife to loosen the edge of the pudding, and turn out onto a plate, then cover with the reserved fruit and juice. Serve with cream.

(serves 6)

• 800g mixed summer fruit (raspberries, strawberries, red and blackcurrants work best)

• 4 tablespoons caster sugar

• 3 tablespoons elderflower cordial

• Half a loaf of white bread, slightly stale, crusts removed

At Grace and Flavour members meet year round on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday mornings. Being part of a garden team means there is no problem with jobs getting done when you go on holiday: many hands make light work! It’s not just gardening either, there’s always tea and cake – and several times a year members join together for shared lunches, often sharing recipes.

ST MARTIN’S CHURCH EAST HORSLEY KT24 6RL

PART OF THE HORSLEY, OCKHAM & DOWNSIDE GROUP MINISTRY

From the Rector Life is certainly getting back to normal following the past two years of disruption. St Martin’s as well as other local churches are beginning to see the numbers in church we were used to pre-pandemic. Many of the initiatives we got off the ground pre-COVID are back including East Horsley Care. If you need transport for medical appointments, I do hope you will make use of the excellent transport service now available (details over the page). Likewise, we need volunteers to join our team of drivers. If you have a little time to spare, please do contact our Horsley Care team for more information. A few week’s ago we launched a weekly coffee morning which takes place in the church on Thursdays from 10.00am to 12.00pm. This is a great way to connect with local friends and make new ones. Do come along. We are very excited to be hosting a special evening with worship leader and songwriter Graham Kendrick in September, a big quiz night in the village hall in October and the return of Tenors Un Limited in December. The best way to find out more about these events and plenty more is to join our mailing list. It is easy to do that by visiting our website www.easthorsleychurch.or.uk and signing up. Wishing you a blessed summer and hope to see you soon.

With every blessing

Summer breaks

TRAVEL

that won’t break the bank Shutterstock

Revealing some of Europe’s cheapest cities to visit over summer and autumn.

1. Wroclaw, Poland Average daily spend per visitor: £20 Situated on the Oder River and its four tributaries, Wroclaw is renowned for its bridges, with over 100 spanning the water. There were three times this number before World War II, although the city would now like to think its fame is now in other areas, such as its picturesque Market Square and traditional music venues. Travel tip: Look out for the gnomes, a signal of protest against human rights censorship.

2. Timisoara, Romania Average daily spend per visitor: £36 Timisoara, the 2021 European Capital City of Culture, is a small city with a big reputation. It’s compact, which means travelling around is easy for families, and at every turn there is history, culture and tourist appeal. Known as Little Vienna and the City of Flowers, it has a charm and prettiness perhaps many wouldn’t associate with Romania, a large number of monuments and statues, and over 40 parks and green spaces.

Travel tip: Forget rail travel in this part of the Czech Republic, most people will get around by bus.

4. Varna, Bulgaria Average daily spend per visitor: £45 Varna is a port city and seaside resort on Bulgaria’s Black Sea. In the past, it was perhaps most renowned for its famous ‘Gold of Varna’, 6,000-year-old Thracian jewellery discovered in a necropolis, and displayed inside the Archaeological Museum. However, modern Varna features a bar-lined waterfront promenade, wonderful restaurants and beach vibes.

Travel tip: The anti-communist revolution began here in 1989, which is clear to see from the modern architecture.

Travel tip: At an average beer price of £1.20/ pint, remember to pack some paracetamol!

3. Cesky Krumlov

Average daily spend per visitor: £55

Average daily spend per visitor: £42 Perhaps the best thing about Cesky Krumlov is that it won’t swamp you with either its energy or size. It’s an incredibly pretty city, with an historic old town and some wonderful winding, cobbled streets. The picturesque setting of a horseshoe bend river with a huge ‘Disney style’ castle is what Cesky Krumlov is famous for; while the social aspect is predictably strong, with taverns serving up traditional Czech pilsner.

5. Maribor, Slovenia Wine lovers should make Maribor a must-see destination. With over four centuries of expert wine making, the Slovenian city attracts people from all around with the promise of elegant grapes and wonderful aromas, all backed with cafes, restaurants and wonderful architecture, with mountain trails and ski slopes peeling off in the distance. Travel tip: Rather than rely on supermarkets, you can pick up some locally produced wine directly from the wine producer or vineyard.

Dog Days

PETS

The four-step guide to ensuring your canine pal can travel abroad when you do.

1. Visit your vet at least one month before travelling to ensure that your dog is microchipped and has a valid rabies vaccination. You will also need to obtain an Animal Health Certificate – this can only be issued by an official veterinarian, so find a practice and book your appointment in advance. The certificate is valid for 10 days before entry must be made to EU or Northern Ireland, and expires in four months, by which time you must have returned Great Britain. 2. Before you leave, ensure you update your holiday details on your pet’s microchip record, and check to see if your pet insurance covers you for your trip. If it doesn’t, take out additional insurance in exactly the same way you would for family members. 3. When travelling, pack all your doggy essentials, but remember you are not allowed

to take pet food with you. On the trip, your animal will usually be on the plane with you – in-cabin, as accompanied baggage, or as cargo – and will be charged according to the airline’s procedure. 4. And remember, while most people fret about getting their dogs overseas, this is really only the start of it, and it’s important to ensure they are catered for when there. That means limiting long journeys whilst on holiday, ensuring plenty of shade from hot weather, and being in a location where your animal can relax, preferably away from loud noises.
