BOOK RECOMMENDATIONS
Friends of Horsley Library Friends of Horsley Library (FoHL) recommend a few of their favourite reads to start 2021
Meet Me at the Museum by Ann Youngson When the curator of a Danish museum responds to a query about ancient exhibits, he doesn’t expect a reply. When Tina first wrote it, nor did she … This is a thoughtful and revealing novel of selfdiscovery and second chances. Anne Youngson illuminates the everyday in this poignant tale of love, life and the unexpected surprises that come our way.
Overstory by Richard Powers Whilst teaching at Stanford University and encountering giant redwood trees for the first time, Powers was driven to write this work. This novel gives voice to nine Americans whose unique life experiences with trees unite them in addressing the destruction of forests. The Overstory is an embracing and ardent work of activism that is also a dazzling anthem to the natural world.
The Beekeeper of Aleppo by Christy Lefteri Beautifully written, The Beekeeper of Aleppo gives names and faces to the glimpses we’ve had of the people that became Syrian refugees. An enduring love story of a mother consumed by loss and her husband who insists on their survival as they undertake the Syrian refugee trail to Europe. Hard hitting and captivating.
Cutting for Stone by Abraham Verghese An embracing and emotionally engaging first novel - an unfolding family tale of love and redemption, exile and home across five decades in India, Ethiopia and America. A revealing story that both challenges and sheds light on the real world.
The Number Devil by Hans Magnus Enzensberger A book for children and young adults, with appeal for older adults too. The book follows a young boy named Robert, who hates maths, but through a series of dreams discovers the
amazing world of numbers. Combines an engaging look at maths with simplicity and would make a good gift! FoHL was set up many years ago when rumours were rife around the village that Surrey were considering closing our library. Activities were planned that included talks given by local published authors, Christmas quizzes, story reading for young children etc. The group remains active, the threat to our library continues and Covid-19 has not helped. Currently the Friends group have some thirty members, and more are very welcome to join. One of the most positive things we can do as a group is to make sure all our friends and neighbours appreciate that we do have a wonderful resource on our doorstep. As the old adage goes “If you don’t use it you may lose it” - and we are sure nobody wants this. Please contact Chair of FoHL Rhys Beynon: rbeynon1@ btinternet.com if you want further information, or if you can help us (FoHL) in any way. Full details of all services available under current conditions are at the website www.surreycc.gov.uk/ libraries

HORSLEY FARMING
Counting Sheep Throughout lockdown many of us have enjoyed having more time to walk around the fields that surround our village. Pam Martin shares her farming journey through the year with the Horsley flock. We’ve had sheep grazing around the Horsleys for the last 15 years, every year has been different and 2020 certainly has been no exception. Since March we’ve enjoyed meeting lots more people out walking in the countryside and taking an interest in our flock. The new year is already underway for us by January. If rams are put in on bonfire night the ewes will start lambing on April Fool’s Day, with lots of sets of twins, warm sunny days and fresh spring grass to encourage milk production. Each lamb is checked within 24 hours of birth to make sure it has had a good drink from it’s mum and marked with temporary spray for identification. A few triplets always need a bit of extra tlc with some being hand-reared. Throughout the year you may catch sight of coloured dots on the backs of sheep, these help us keep track of preventative measures against sheep diseases - much like your pets. As temperatures rise and blowfly numbers increase it’s time for shearing. Each fleece is tightly rolled
and packed in a large wool sack for transport to a British Wool depot and is subsequently sold around the world. Characteristics of the wool varies with breed, determining whether it’s used for insulation, carpets or clothing and hence it’s value. In recent years the payment we received (around 60p/kg) covered the cost of shearing, but no longer; sales of last year’s crop were severely disrupted, and we expect far less for the wool we sent away this autumn. Lambs are weaned when about 12 weeks old and are given priority for the better grazing as grass growth slows. The ewes rest before breeding again. During winter lambs move to turnip fields to keep them growing before being sold in spring. Further disruption seems likely in 2021 due to whatever the consequences of Brexit may be; about a third of the sheep meat produced in UK is exported to Europe - this sector of agricultural production is especially vulnerable. Sheep are checked every day to make sure they are all well, not stuck in brambles or fences, haven’t been attacked by dogs, or got into any other trouble – such as being stuck on their backs. From a distance these may seem dead, with all four feet in the air and perfectly still. They cannot survive indefinitely like this, but if spotted soon enough they will quickly run off when rolled over. We have many folks to thank for letting us know when they’ve seen an animal in such a predicament. We always appreciate the helpful calls we receive from those who take an interest in the welfare of our animals and who, like us, enjoy seeing them grazing peacefully in the surrounding countryside.

HORSLEY STATION
station, have a chat to me (safely of course) and take some reading material away (returned books have a time in quarantine). My early career was varied. I came out of college and went to work for sea king helicopters on the electrical side of things - and in the automotive industry including Mercedes, Jaguar and a time with British and European formula 3 motor racing, one of our drivers was a young lad called Takuma Sato who went on and competed in formula 1, to be part of his early career made me immensely proud. My final job in the industry was with Aston Martin, the toys were great but the stress was unreal, so I had a career change and set myself up with a burger van which I ran on a trading estate and at festivals and football events.
Stationed at Horsley Richard Bunce, customer ambassador at Horsley Station with a heart for community, shares his passion for the role and his background. Here at Horsley Station I do everything as I’m the only person assigned to the station unless I have leave! When I started I felt the station needed quite a lot of love and attention, and I’ve spent quite a bit of time giving this some thought. I set up the ‘borrow a book’ before lockdown, then during the first lockdown when libraries were closed people would use their permitted exercise time to walk up to the
During this time I was taken suddenly ill and it was touch and go whether I’d make it. It took a full five months to recover - and then I took a bit of extra time off. In time I was getting bored and saw an advert for South West Trains and so I became a commercial guard. In this job I was asked to deliver training to new recruits which I found very rewarding and it became my full time role. I delivered many courses including corporate welcome, disability awareness and conflict awareness. I have now moved into the role of ‘Customer Ambassador’. As well as looking after customers, it’s a role that allows me to add other little touches around the station. I love getting the community involved - and thinking of things that benefit locals and users of the station. I have a rescue dog, George, and I’m up early just after 4am to give him a good walk before I go to work. If it’s a day off we’ll go and find a desolate beach. I love it when Horsley folks call by the station to say hi with their dog - and there’s always a bowl of water on offer. I have all the time in the world for anyone that requires it.

RECIPE
Winter Warmer
We often need a good dish that’s easy to share with family - or deliver to someone who needs some help. There’s nothing like a one-pot meal slowly bubbling on the stove or in the slow cooker - both for satisfaction of getting the prep done early and the lack of washing up at the end! Here’s a recipe that makes a good offering:
Ingredients
Bean and Sausage Stew 1
Brown the sausages in a frying pan on high heat for a few minutes each side - transfer to the slow cooker
2
Soften the onions and celery in the frying pan on a low heat for five minutes, adding the garlic for the last minute - transfer to the slow cooker.
3
Add all of the other ingredients to the slow cooker and gently stir.
• 1 celery stalk diced
4
Cover and cook on low for 6-8 hours.
• 2 cloves garlic, finely chopped
•
This recipe can also be made in a heavy based pan on a hob - reduce the cooking time to 2-3 hours.
• 8 large sausages or 12 chipolatas • 2x 400g cans beans (any combination of cannellini, borlotti, chickpeas, red kidney or butter beans works well) • 1 x 400g cans chopped tomatoes • 1 tablespoon tomato puree • 1 large onion, diced
• ½ teaspoon cinnamon • 1 teaspoon allspice • 1 bayleaf • 1 small cup of stock • salt and pepper
If you’d like to make it vegetarian, miss out step 1, substitute the chipolatas with a large squash peeled and cubed and add to the pot with the other ingredients in step 3.
Throughout 2020 food banks across the UK faced unprecedented demand and Marcus Rashford began a high-profile campaign to make sure underprivileged schoolchildren are able to have access to free food over the holidays. Food Facts:
Onions
The heaviest onion ever grown was 8.5 kg and was weighed at the Harrogate Autumn Flower Show in 2014. It is estimated humans have been growing and eating onions for at least 7,000 years. China produces over 25% of the world’s onion supply. Eating fresh parsley will help take away the taste and smell of onion (and garlic) on your breath. Onions are eaten and grown in more countries than any other vegetable, with at least 175 countries producing an onion crop. And unlike wheat (the largest global crop by area harvested), the onion is a staple of every major cuisine. The sulphuric acid in onions is what causes you to cry. However, several things reduce the release of the acid: if you cut the root end last; if the onion is cold; or you cut it while holding the onion under cold running water. Wearing contact lenses also protects your eyes from the acid.

ST MARTIN’S CHURCH EAST HORSLEY KT24 6RL
PART OF THE HORSLEY, OCKHAM & DOWNSIDE GROUP MINISTRY
The Friends of St Martin’s St. Martin’s Church has been at the heart of village life in East Horsley for nearly one thousand years. This beautiful church has a number of interesting internal features, including the tomb of Thomas Cornwallis and his wife. He was a member of the court of Queen Elizabeth I. Major rebuilding work was undertaken in the 1860’s under the guidance of Lord Lovelace (of local bridges fame). The wall around the church incorporates many examples of the unique Lovelace style, including the use of flint and locally produced terracotta tiles. He also built a Mausoleum in the northeast corner of the churchyard, which is the final resting place of himself and his second wife. The Friends of St. Martin’s was established to assist financially in the care and maintenance of this historic building and the preservation of its contents. Recent improvements to which the Friends have contributed, include a complete upgrade to the lighting both inside and out and the re-ordering of the chancel area. If you would like to help in this work and also enjoy outings and other events, please consider joining the Friends. Membership is open to all, whether or not you are a churchgoer and you will have the satisfaction of helping to secure the future of our village church. The annual subscription is £20.00 per annum for individuals and £50.00 for businesses and other organisations. You may of course give more by way of a donation, if you wish. Please fill in the form opposite and send it to the Parish Office. Please join now. We would welcome your support. Peer Support Groups It is a normal human response to feel stressed when faced with tough times. It is also quite normal to have bouts of low mood from time to time. Life throws at us all sorts of experiences that challenge our emotions. Struggles with finance, relationships, employment, bereavement and now COVID, all take their toll and sometimes it can all be overwhelming. One thing that helps us get through such struggles is being able to talk about them… though that can be so difficult when we fear opening up to others in case we are thought of as being weak or a failure in not being able to cope. PeerTalk is a national charity supporting people living with depression, anxiety and emotional distress through a network of peer support groups facilitated by volunteers. Locally, PeerTalk runs a support group in Guildford, which meets in person every Wednesday evening, 7.30–9pm at The Spike Community Centre, Warrren Street. Support groups, such as ours, are protected under the current Government COVID guidelines and are permitted to meet, face-to-face, in COVIDsecure premises. Our meetings are currently open and we’re observing measures to make the space as safe as possible for all who attend. It’s a safe space, much appreciated by those who come along. PeerTalk groups are free to attend, with no referral needed. People who come along can, if they want, share their thoughts and feelings in a non-clinical, non-judgmental, friendly space and also share their own coping strategies with others going through similar tough times. Those with lived experience of depression and anxiety are best placed to support others facing the same struggles.
The support groups are facilitated by trained volunteers. These volunteer facilitators do not offer counsel or guidance or try to ‘fix’ people as their role is to listen and manage the group’s participation and timing. And most importantly, they welcome people to the group. Here are some quotes from those who have attended PeerTalk groups: ‘My experience with the group has been great because I sit with great people in the same situation as me, with this group I have felt really good’. ‘It has given me somewhere to express feelings that otherwise I have no outlet for. I feel better for attending’. ‘It has helped me to realise that I am not the only person living with depression and that there is a group, where people can help and support each other, to me that means a lot’. ‘It has given me more confidence in myself and the chance to talk has made me see that other people struggle too and everyone’s experiences and grasp on life are different, yet we can all help each other’. A quote from a PeerTalk Facilitator: ‘There was excellent input and support from all attendees, including the three newcomers. There were no embarrassing silences, the time went very quickly. There was a great deal of empathy shown towards our newcomers who were warmly welcomed by the others and affirmed for coming along to our meeting’. MENTAL HEALTH
Mind Matters Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) England is calling on hundreds of thousands of people it has trained in mental health skills and awareness to join the national effort to tackle the invisible impact of the coronavirus. The organisation has a mission to train 1 in 10 in the UK in Mental Health First Aid and many towns and organisations across the UK are pledging to take up this accredited course. With the Covid-19 virus heightening stress, anxiety and social isolation Mental Health First Aiders and Champions are being asked to use their skills to support those struggling with their mental health by signposting them to the appropriate support, both in and outside of the workplace. As the current health crisis sees more people working from home than ever before, MHFA England, a social enterprise which offers expertise in workplace mental health, will focus its campaign activities on providing guidance designed to support employees
feeling the impact of the coronavirus. Simon Blake OBE, Chief Executive of Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) England advises “In the current climate, and as more organisations move to online working, human connections are more important than ever. Nurturing them virtually will be key to supporting the nation’s mental health and wellbeing as we come together to tackle the impact of coronavirus.” The focus is on ‘keeping mentally healthy whilst working from home’ and will encourage employees to stay connected wherever they are working. Duncan Stephenson, Deputy Chief Executive, Royal Society for Public Health (RSPH) noted that “This is an unprecedented period of anxiety for many people in the UK and the population’s mental health is paramount at this time. We fully applaud the work of Mental Health First Aid England’s network to help people through it and signpost to mental health supports.” Would you like to become a Mental Health First Aider, in relation to your role at work or within our community? The course gives an in-depth understanding of mental health and the factors that can affect wellbeing along with some practical skills to spot the triggers and signs of mental health issues. It aims to give each participant confidence and knowledge to step in and support someone in need. If you would be interested in attending a Mental Health First Aid course in Horsley in 2021 and qualifying as a local Mental Health First Aider then please email Judy Young: iamjudyyoung@gmail.com

PETS
Dog Dieting Your dog isn’t starting the month worried about zipping up their jeans. But if a check on their waistline shows that they are carrying a few extra pounds, it’s time for to you to address the problem for the sake of their health. Studies have shown that overweight dogs don’t live as long and are more prone to illnesses that spoil their quality of life. All those little extra treats you’ve been giving them could mean there’s a genuine risk of killing your pet with kindness. There’s no BMI chart for dogs, so you need to look at body shape and assess body fat. Viewed from above, does your dog have a waist where their body tapers after the ribcage? Can you feel your dog’s ribs or do they have a potbelly? Increasing exercise will not be enough on its own, so you should plan a trip to the vet. Not only will they assess how overweight they are, they’ll check if any medical conditions are causing the extra pounds or will prevent weight loss. Furthermore the vet can provide a special calorie-controlled food. Keep a note of everything – including table scraps and treats – that your dog eats for a few days. A dog that does not seem to eat much dog food probably still has an appetite for sausages and biscuits! If you’ve reached the stage that your pet actually looks plump, it’s going to take quite a while to reach their target weight, so stick with it.

Behind the scenes of the
DEBRA East Horsley Window
Sarah Malone, Manager of the DEBRA Shop East Horsley, shares some of her creative inspiration for wonderful window displays: “Usually an idea pops into my head in the middle of the night and a display grows from there. I don’t actually have any creative background (in fact, if I am honest, I was thrown out of art classes at school for painting my friend in a lesson), but I do have a great imagination and an inventive mind. Our best display to date started off as an idea to knit a Christmas tree and over time this escalated to the whole window display. Every volunteer who could knit was persuaded to take part, the results were amazing. My other favourite window display is our Remembrance window. One evening I decided to knit a poppy, which then grew into the idea of making a dress. With the help of wonderful volunteers and hundreds of poppies later, our beautiful poppy dress was created. The reaction from the Horsley community was overwhelming and meant a lot to us. My thoughts then went to how to make it bigger and better for the following year, so the tunic was created. You will have to wait and see what we are going to come up with for next year. This year’s Christmas display was one that started with a little idea and again escalated into something much bigger. I must say the last lockdown helped as it gave me the time to create and hide from the jobs my husband wanted me to do. At times displays evolve from donations that come
in; sometimes an item is delicate, too big for the shop floor, or so amazing it needs to be put into the window. Others are pre-planned and some are spontaneous creations by the volunteers. Our volunteers, they are awe inspiring people who give up their time freely to come and help in-store. We are all from different backgrounds but together we are a team, and this is what makes the shop work. We have fun, support each other and everyone has a role to play. It has been an extremely difficult time for us recently, but yet again we have all pulled together. We always have spaces for new members to join our volunteer team so if anyone is interested, please do pop in for a chat or visit www.debra.org.uk/volunteer. Finally, I must say a massive thank you to all our donors and customers who continually support us, without you all we wouldn’t be able to raise the much needed funds to support the EB Community. Your support of our shop allows DEBRA to fund community support for those living with the painful genetic skin blistering condition EB, as well as specialist healthcare and vital research into treatments and a cure. Find out more about DEBRA at www. debra.org.uk”

LIFESTYLE
Founded in 2014, Veganuary is an initiative that encourages people across the world to try veganism in January. Here, we look at the reasons to take part and how to go a month – or more – without meat and dairy. Veganism has ballooned in recent years, with a record 400,000 people signing up to the Veganuary movement in 2020. Documentaries like ‘What the Health’, ‘Cowspiracy’ and David Attenborough’s ‘A Life on Our Planet’ have helped drive the trend, all of which shed light on the benefits of a vegan diet for our health and for the planet.
What is veganism and why should you try it? A vegan diet is one that excludes all animal products, including meat, dairy, eggs and even honey in favour of plants and plant-based products. In short, a vegan lifestyle is one that tries, as much as possible, to exist without harming animals. The benefits of adopting a more plant-based diet are numerous. David Attenborough said himself that our planet simply cannot sustain seven billion meat eaters, and scientists have claimed that eating large amounts of meat and dairy is linked to several health conditions too. When done correctly, it’s possible to get all the nutrients you need from a totally plantbased diet. It can also help you lose weight and introduce you to more fruits, vegetables, seeds and grains that you wouldn’t normally incorporate into your weekly shop. Veganism may not be for everyone, but even just trying it for a month will reduce your carbon footprint and may encourage you to eat less meat and dairy in the future.
The big question: how? Supermarkets, cafes and restaurants have been filling their shelves and kitchens with tasty meat and dairy substitutes over the last couple of years, meaning finding something you like is easier than ever. Book shops and the internet are packed full of tasty recipes, and if you sign up to Veganuary you’ll receive weekly tips and recipes to keep you on track. Seitan, Quorn and tofu are fantastic substitutes for meat and can be used to create plant-based versions of your favourite dishes. They’re all easy to cook, packed with healthy plant proteins and have a very convincing meat-like texture. Supermarkets are now filled with a huge array of plant-based milks, including soy, oat, almond and coconut, and a huge variety of vegan cheeses too. Although they won’t taste exactly like the real deal, they’re close enough – and delicious in their own right! Eating out is also easier than ever, with more and more restaurants adding vegan options to their menus every year.
What about your health? Contrary to popular belief, you can get all the nutrients your body needs from eating a varied and balanced vegan diet. The only vitamin that’s difficult to find is Vitamin B-12, but thankfully many cereals, soy milks – and even Marmite – are fortified with this essential vitamin. Visit uk.veganuary.com to sign up today.

New Year’s Resolutions There is no better time for setting new goals or priorities than the fresh start a New Year offers. Here, some people from around Horsley share their New Year’s Resolutions:
My resolution for BWB in 2021 is to acquire a waterproof and welcoming Shed so that we have a fixed venue to safely meet and greet our knitters, receive stocks from them, sort and allocate these stocks and distribute to local charities. Ingrid from Blankets without Borders
My resolution for 2021 is to enjoy and encourage every chance for laughter. Fun and happiness is infectious and after the anxieties of 2020, it’s definitely time to spread smiles, wherever possible. Victoria - local tutor of French, Latin and Spanish
Our resolution is to endeavour to reach out to more residents in West Horsley to offer our help and assistance, return our clubs to the bubbling hubs of chatter and friendship we have missed anEd to rebuild our network of wonderful volunteers after a disjointed 2020. Amanda de Haast, Chairman, West Horsley Wheel of Care
“It’s my New Years resolution to have a que at the ticket office most mornings and no spaces in the car park”. Richard Bunce, Customer Ambassador at Horsley Station
To protect and enhance the character of East Horsley and the wellbeing of our residents. A key objective for 2021 is to try and mitigate the impacts on the village of the extensive housing developments expected around our area due to the GBC Local Plan. Robert Taylor, Chairman, East Horsley Parish Council.
Remember the benefits of a slower life and spend more time with people we love. Jenny Copp, member of Horsley Rocks community choir
The Horsleys Community Fund resolves that in 2021 our neighbours and our environment are treated with kindness and respect. The intention of the Steering Panel is to utilise Easy Fundraising for as many personal purchases as possible to provide funds to support our local community. Clare Mathias, Chair, The Horsleys Community Fund.
“To enjoy more family time and learn to make the most of every day......” Simon Collins, planning and design service for extensions, alterations and new build residential projects
“To have a more positive attitude - to find a positive in everything, no matter what it is.” Ian CT Cars
