BUSINESS PROFILE

An Interview With Mortiboys Dental Spa What do you do? We are a hybrid clinic offering General Family Dental Care combined with Specialist Dental Services such as Orthodontics, Dental Implantology and Oral Surgery, Facial Aesthetics, Marc Mortiboys as well as Gum Disease management. We have always strived to offer a range of treatments for all budgets within the private sector and we were one of the first clinics in the UK to launch the amazing Dental Plan called Practice Plan which allows maintenance assessments and hygienist therapy to be funded on a monthly basis with members receiving dentistry at a 10% discounted rate. Refreshing in an era of increasing private dental and medical fees!

How did you get started, how long has your business been running? Twenty years ago we were putting in place the final touches for the launch of Mortiboys Dental Spa. From the life experiences of the pioneer and current Clinical Director, Marc Mortiboys, we had the vision to create a beautiful venue to provide unique and innovative, health-centred Dentistry and Whole-Body care in a caring, peaceful environment. In this time we have become indelibly branded within our local community as well as nationwide. Our location with good transport links and easy parking has allowed people to visit from far and wide. We are easy to spot as you walk or drive by, thanks to our blooming flower boxes which bring a floral glow to Forest Road.

time. Our bar has been constantly raised, with constant training and upgrading of technology. Two years ago we obtained an Intra-Oral 3D scanner to help our patients understand their teeth in more detail as well as avoid the gaggy impression materials and this year we are investing in a cone-beam CT scanner to help improve our diagnostic and treatment abilities, especially for the more complex treatments.

What do you most enjoy about your job? We love inspiring people to overcome their fears and concerns about dentistry and helping them receive life changing improvements in their smile, bite and oral Kim Mortiboys health. It gives us such joy, when our patients look forward to visiting us. We really enjoy reading how we positively impact people’s lives and the testimonials we get on Google and FaceBook are very reassuring feedback that we are touching lives in a special way.

What lies ahead for you this year? In May as part of our Twenty Year celebrations and re-launch, we will be hosting open days and evenings, inviting our local community to visit our facilities and meet our delightful, highly skilled team and to ask them questions to find out how we can help. We look forward to meeting you soon.

What are some of the challenges? It has been a challenging, yet exciting journey from an initial squat clinic. Some of you may remember the space being for a video shop and florist in the 1990s. We have dealt with the credit crunch and inspired so many people to keep their mouths health during such a difficult To advertise email sales@thehorsleydirectory.co.uk or call 01483 338 288

Despite much of our waste bearing the recycle symbol, most councils don’t have the facilities to process everything. You will correctly believe that items such as glass bottles, cardboard and plastic drinks bottles are processed. But toiletries bottles and aerosols? What about plastic food trays. And broken drinks glasses…admit it, you probably don’t really know. Paper: In your kerbside collection most paper will be collected and recycled. But this excludes shredded paper, tissues, photographs and gift wrap. Glass: Bottles and jars are widely recycled and the Household Waste Recycling Centre (HWRC) will usually take panes of glass or mirrors. But normal drinking glasses should just be carefully wrapped and placed in the household waste bin. Toiletries: Anything bottle-shaped including empty toiletries bottles and used aerosols – should be fine. Face-wipes, cotton pads and mixed products like plastic razors go into household waste. Plastic: Most councils can’t recycle ready meal/takeaway trays or yoghurt pots. There are a number of reasons for this, related both to the way these products are manufactured and the facilities councils have for recycling, but check with your own council. Tetrapak/drinks cups: containers used for orange juice, non-dairy milks and soup, together with plastic-lined cups provided in coffee shops, are not usually acceptable in a kerbside collection. Some councils do have facilities at recycling centres. Finally, remember that if you put nonrecyclables into the wrong bin, it could contaminate the whole lot meaning nothing is recycled. And that would be a waste.

BOOKS

To Read, Or Not To Read That is the question! From thrillers to gardening, there’s something to suit most readers this month... Alice Christina Henry If you enjoy twisted fairy tales, this book (and its sequel, Red Queen) needs to be on your reading list. The story begins with Alice, who’s been locked up in an asylum for a decade after encountering the Rabbit. She escapes with her neighbouring cellmate and they set off on a journey that sees them encountering various characters from the beloved children’s tale. This is definitely not a story for children however; it’s horrifying, gruesome and as dark as they come.

On The Up Alice O’ Keeffe Sylvia dreams of a better life, away from her council flat. A home with wisteria around the door, a garden and no noisy neighbours. Meanwhile, her financial situation and the challenges of parenthood are putting a strain on her relationship with her partner, Obe. While Sylvia is desperate to leave her estate behind, when it’s threatened she finds herself ready to defend it. A warm humorous book about family, community and modern life.

The Mercies Kiran Millwood Hargrave The tiny Norwegian community of Vardø is devastated when most of its men are killed at sea in one night. The women have to come together to survive. But this is the seventeenth century, and independent women are viewed with suspicion and distaste, particularly by new commissioner Absalom Cornet. Based on real events, The Mercies is a gripping, thought-provoking read.

Peaky Blinders: The Real Story Of Birmingham’s Most Notorious Gangs Carl Chinn If you love the TV series, you might enjoy reading about some of the real peaky blinders who lived, fought and evaded the law in Birmingham a century ago. Amongst them was the author’s own greatgrandfather. Unlike the show, the book doesn’t glamourise the men or the deeds. As Chinn states, the peaky blinders were often “unsavoury, unglamorous and

unworthy of respect”. Instead, the book provides a wellresearched, fascinating insight into historical gang violence.

How to Plant A Garden Matt James Itching to get back out in your garden now spring is here? Or perhaps you’re somewhat reluctantly determined to tackle the weeds? Either way, this book might help to inspire you. There’s advice on choosing the right plants for different situations and plenty of guidance on soil conditions, shady areas, plant combinations and more. It’s not a new release, so you might even be able to order a copy from your local library.

Three Hours Rosamund Lupton Masked gunmen attack a school in Somerset. They shoot the headmaster but make no demands. Who’s behind the attack; who’s safe; who’s the target? A heart-racingly tense thriller with characters you’ll be desperate to protect. Three Hours will keep you on the edge of your seat and reading ‘just one more page’ long into the night.

GARDENING

Community Garden Update Grace and Flavour is a local community vegetable garden situated next to Dene Place on Ripley Lane West Horsley. The garden is about an acre, we grow vegetables, herbs, fruit and cut flowers. Winter Report The main task over the winter has been clearing old crops before spreading manure and compost. We do not rotavate or dig. We try to cover as much ground as possible even spreading under plants such as Brussels sprouts. Although not as physical as digging the wheelbarrowing keeps everyone warm. Some work is also needed in the polytunnels looking after the salads which we grow inside over winter. The fruit bushes, the espaliered pears and apples are winter pruned, the autumn raspberries are cut down. We force some early rhubarb using old dustbins to cover a few of the rhubarb crowns. During the winter we have ordered seeds, onion sets and seed potatoes. In February we arrange with one of the local rangers (often Sheepleas) to cut bean and pea sticks. We grow about the equivalent of 60 metres of climbing beans, and 75 metres of peas, so a considerable number of sticks are needed.

First jobs for the new season ahead The new growing season begins indoors around the middle of February. In the polytunnel we sow into module trays, lots of spinach, salad crops, early cabbages, calabrese, radishes, kohl rabi, dill, coriander and pea

shoots. Slightly later in the month broad beans, peas, beetroot and cauliflowers are sown. We start virtually all our vegetable seeds inside and then plant out. The main exceptions being carrots and parsnips which are sown directly into the ground outside. We sow red Firenze onions, celeriac and peppers in a propagator indoors The sowing and planting outside will wait until March when the soil warms up. After the middle of the month we will plant onion sets and early potatoes. In addition some of the February sown crops will be planted out under fleece. During February and March we should be still cropping carrots, parsnips, leeks, kale, winter cabbages, Jerusalem artichokes, the last of the Brussels sprouts, salads and the first of the sprouting broccoli. Grace and Flavour working days are Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday mornings, a few members stay longer and work in the afternoons. We are always happy to welcome new members who will be able to buy vegetables at a discounted rate. Anyone from the community can come and buy vegetables from us. www.graceandflavour.org

An Interview With Ovens ‘N’ Stuff

Jim Garrard

How many times have we all looked at our oven, dish washer, fridge or shower and thought I must get around to cleaning that, but you never seem find the time or inclination to do it.

Jim of A New Dimension “Ovens ‘n’ Stuff” used to think the same, before realising that there was a gap in the market. This Godalming based company, founded at the start of the recession back in 2009, is seeing his business taking off in a big way.

What do you most enjoy about your job? “I really enjoy my work, and having the interaction with the clients, after a while they merge into becoming really good friends too. It’s also nice to see there families grow over time, I’ve had families who have had me for so long now, even their offspring are now having me in their homes to clean for them too. The best bit of course are the results from the cleaning, it gives me a nice feeling of satisfaction giving the client a near new looking clean appliance.” With over 20 years worth of cleaning experience behind him, Jim finds it hard to let his customers down, Jim said “If you want your appliance cleaned without having to pay the earth, call us, We just love doing the jobs you hate!.”

What do you do? “Some people do have their ovens cleaned, and some have a cleaner, but not all cleaners will do ovens, kitchen appliances and bathrooms. We visit our customers when it’s a convenient time to them, we set to with our cleaning system to remove all traces of dirt, grease and grime, to bring your appliances and bathroom areas back to a like new state. Your appliance will also be ready to use straight away with none of those nasty smells”.

What areas do you cover and how long does cleaning take? The company normally covers from southwest London, down to the West Sussex coastline, and will travel as far out as the East Sussex borders. We will also go the extra mile, and cover anywhere else in the country or the world by request, one of the few to offer this level of dedicated and personal service. General cleaning times for most appliances and bathroom areas is 1 to 3 hours depending on the size of the particular job, with our speciality, AGAs and ranges taking a little longer.

BAKING

Easter Cookies Simnel cake has become a traditional cake for Easter, although it was in the past associated with lent, and in particular the fourth Sunday when the traditional fast was suspended allowing for a day of celebration and great feasting as people journeyed home to their mother church – a day we now known as Mother’s Day.

Ingredients

Makes 4-5 pancakes depending on the size of your pan

• 225g plain flour • ½ teaspoon baking powder • ¼ teaspoon salt

1

Preheat oven to 150C

2

Sieve together the flour, baking powder mixed spice and salt. In a separate bowl, cream together butter and sugar until light and creamy. Add the almond essence. Gradually stir in the dry ingredients, then finally stir in the chocolate chips, raisins, mixed peel and chopped nuts.

3

Using a teaspoon measure walnut sized balls of the dough and arrange on ungreased baking trays 5cm apart. Flatten biscuits slightly using a fork.

4

Bake for 15 to 20 minutes until light golden brown. Remove from trays to cool on racks.

• 1 teaspoon mixed spice • 225g unsalted butter • 100 g caster sugar • ½ teaspoon almond essence • 50g white chocolate chips • 40g each raisins and mixed peel • 60g roughly chopped almonds

These cookies are inspired by simnel cake and can be enjoyed at any time! Recipe supplied by

ST MARTIN’S CHURCH EAST HORSLEY KT24 6RL

PART OF THE HORSLEY, OCKHAM & DOWNSIDE GROUP MINISTRY

From the Rector... One of my favourite George Michael songs is called ‘A Different Corner’. I have often reflected on the line ‘Turn a different corner and we never would have met’ for our lives are often incredibly affected by chance opportunities. I know this from my personal life and in my ministry. Many years ago, I was asked to join an interview panel for the appointment of the Rector of my old parish. That chance encounter led not only to a long and lasting friendship but also opened the door to my eventual ordination and the ripple effect of that brought me and my family to St Martin’s. I am sure many of us will recall chance opportunities which led us to meet our partners or create new opportunities. And so, it was too for Jesus’ early disciples. They too had ‘turned the corner’ and met a man who would transform their lives and the billions of Christians who followed. Turn a different corner and they would not have met the saviour of the world. At Easter we are reminded that Mary Magdalene took a chance and visited the tomb of Jesus, only to find that he was not there. Instead she met an angel who asked her why she was looking for the living amongst the dead. This Easter we have the chance to meet the risen Lord for ourselves. I hope you will join us for one of our Holy Week and Easter services. You never know who you might bump into! I wish you all a blessed Easter.

BUSINESS PROFILE

An Interview With Harmony Dance and Drama What do you do? I run Harmony Dance and Drama, a local dance school that runs a range of dance classes for children of all ages. We teach classical ballet, Alex Sears modern dance, tap dance, contemporary dance, musical theatre, street dance and drama. We also have adult tap and ballet. There are 69 different classes running from Monday to Saturday, so there really is something for everyone.

How did you get started, how long has your business been running? I moved from London to Ripley in 1999 and began teaching locally. A friend of mine was then opening a nursery school in the area and asked me if I wanted to use the venue to run some dance classes. The nursery opened in March 2001 and so I started teaching there. On the first day I had 6 students and 3 classes running. My classes grew, just a little at first, but then in the autumn there was a sudden influx of students. We have continued to grow over the years and in the last production there were well over 200 students performing. I have 4 fabulous teachers who work alongside me now –we are united in the same strong passion for dance.

they manage to do a step or dance that they struggled with, but persevered. I have some students that I have taught since they were very young that are now exceptionally accomplished and will go on to dance for their career, it is very special to have been a part of that journey.

What are some of the challenges? The challenges that I face are really only when it is show time. It is a mammoth task to try to organise everything as well as teach. In our last production there were 40 dance numbers, over 450 costumes and lots of scenery and set. It was quite tough to get it all done, but then the shows are also the major highlight in my job. The feeling of seeing everything come together after everyone has worked so hard. When the curtain goes up and you can see the joy on the students’ faces, then I know that it has been worth every moment.

I love working with children and young people, but above all I love dancing. I am very fortunate that through my work I am able to do something that I love and am completely dedicated to. Every day is different when you work with young people and I enjoy that. I am so proud of them when To advertise email sales@thehorsleydirectory.co.uk or call 01483 338 288

PETS

Keeping Your Dogs And Cats Healthy This Springtime The warmer temperatures and new growth of spring is a welcome time for all of us – time to emerge from hibernation, whether figuratively or literally, and enjoy the season to its fullest. Unfortunately, it’s also a time when your pet is at risk of ill health because of the sheer number of fleas, ticks, and other little visitors that appear. So how can you protect them this spring, and prevent any health-related issues?

Groom, groom, groom Dogs and cats shed much more in the springtime, so help nature along by gently grooming them on a regular basis. It’ll boost their circulation, encourage the shedding process and help to prevent fur balls.

Treat for fleas and ticks

Worm your pet Hookworms, tapeworms, and roundworms, are all prevalent in the springtime so you need to worm your pet regularly. Talk to your vet about the most suitable treatment, as different types of worm may need to be treated differently. It’s easy to miss the signs of potential ill health in your pet in the spring, as the main culprits are either minute in size or ingested before you realise it’s happened. So keep a watchful eye when you’re outdoors and you’ll be able to act quickly to stop any serious illnesses developing.

It’s easy for dogs and cats to become infested with fleas in the warmer weather, so treat them regularly for fleas and ticks – treatments are easy to administer and they protect your pet from unwanted visitors.
