BOOK REVIEW

THE BEST KIND OF

PEOPLE I LOVED this book. “The Best Kind of People" by Zoe Whittal was so good that I seriously considered pulling an all-nighter just so I didn't have to put it down. But with the clock nearing 2am, and a toddler in the next room who could wake up at any moment, the idea of a good night's rest eventually won me over.

George, the husband and father and beloved teacher, maintains his innocence when arrested for sexual misconduct against female students. The reader is taken into the thoughts of Joan, the wife; Andrew, the son; and Sadie, the daughter, who are struggling to decide what to believe. They also have to somehow continue with their everyday lives in this midst of this tragedy and function in a town divided while waiting for George's trial. Sexual assault cases are complex and emotional, yet Whittal writes about this charged topic in a way that isn't offensive and that looks into an angle that I'd never considered-the accused's family. They have to continue their lives during the months before the trial while facing judgement from the town and grappling with the implications of this event. Whittal satisfies some of our 8 LUXURY LISTED â– NOVEMBER 2017

curiosity about George and the sexual assault charges, but doesn't let the details overshadow the point of this book, which is to allow Sadie, Joan and Andrew to tell their stories. The topic of this book is heavy, but very in touch with the conversations going on today about sexual assault. How much do we really know about our loved ones? What are we each capable of? How do we protect those we love? How do we continue with our lives after our family is affected by a criminal event? So be prepared that this book deals with a lot of deep questions, but they are 100% worth delving into through this storyline. "The Best Kind of People" is heartbreaking, explorative, and shocking.

MARISSA KANARIS is bookobsessed, theologically-minded, food-driven, and latte-addicted as she navigates this life of home, work, marriage and motherhood. pagesforbreakfast.wordpress.com

The CHRISTMAS CAPITAL

Rovaniemi, OF THE WORLD

FINLAND

10 LUXURY LISTED â– NOVEMBER 2017

C

hristmas! It’s the most wonderful time of the year. It’s also the most celebrated holiday across our planet and a time for many families to plan a big trip. For some, the call for white, sandy beaches can be deafening but for me, Christmas wouldn’t be Christmas without snow and there’s one festive place that has it in abundance - Rovaniemi, Finland, the Christmas capital of the world. Bordering on the Arctic, Rovaniemi is the capital of Lapland located in northern Finland. Almost totally destroyed during World War II, today it’s a modern city known for being the “official” home town of Santa Claus, it’s most famous resident who can be visited every day in Santa Claus Village right on the Arctic Circle, an attraction that draws more than 300,000 annual visitors from around the world.

SANTA CLAUS VILLAGE Santa Claus’ original home lies in the mysterious Korvatunturi (“Ear Fell”) in Finnish Lapland. Since the exact location is a secret only known to a chosen few, he decided to establish an office in Rovaniemi in 1985. Rovaniemi received the status of the Official Hometown of Santa Claus in 2010. Santa Claus Village is Lapland’s best-known attraction and a resort in its own right. It is home to approximately 50 draws in the form of activity companies, shops, restaurants and cafés. Husky and reindeer rides, snowmobile tours, design items and souvenirs, ice and snow constructions, an igloo hotel and holiday village accommodation can be found there.

SANTA'S FLYING TROOPS THE REINDEER Reindeer play a special role in Santa Claus’ life, and meeting them certainly makes an impression on everyone. Getting to know reindeer is easy in Rovaniemi, as many reindeer tours and farm visits are available. Kindly notice: flying reindeer are reserved for Santa only, as they require expert driving skills that take centuries to master. NORTHERN LIGHTS Also known as Aurora Borealis, the Northern Lights are visible on around 150 nights a year in Finnish Lapland. Catching the magical phenomenon requires clear and dark skies and a viewing spot not 11 LUXURY LISTED ■ NOVEMBER 2017

affected by light pollution, like street lights and neon signs. In Rovaniemi, you don’t have to walk far from the city centre to find a good spot, and really strong Auroras can be seen even with interference from artificial light. For a more thorough Aurora experience, I recommend joining one of the numerous Northern Lights tours in Rovaniemi. Aurora hunts are available on snowmobiles, husky sleds, snowshoes, and in reindeer sleighs, just to name a few. Expert guides maximize your chances of seeing the Auroras by taking you to special viewing spots while explaining the science and myths behind the phenomenon. ▷

TECHNOLOGY TRAVEL

“The probability for a Northern Lights show at the Arctic Glass Igloos is almost optimal.”

ARCTIC SNOWHOTEL & GLASS IGLOOS The Arctic SnowHotel in Rovaniemi is an entire world of snow and an experience destination that provides an exotic possibility to spend the night sheltered by snow. The SnowHotel is surrounded by picturesque and placid Lappish nature and visitors have good opportunity to experience Arctic specialities, including the Ice Restaurant as well as the surrounding fields of snow. The “Northern Lights friendly” glass igloos are located just next to the Arctic SnowHotel on the Arctic Circle, far enough from the city lights of Rovaniemi, and offer “all-sky vision” in complete comfort. Although there is no way to guarantee an Aurora sighting - since a clear sky, geomagnetic activity and a dash of luck are needed - the probability for a great Northern Lights show at the Arctic Glass Igloos is almost optimal. For those keen to experience the true magic of Christmas, follow Santa’s sleigh bells and visit Rovaniemi, Finland, the official hometown of Santa Claus, and the most festive city on earth. 'Fire Fox' According to Sámi folklore, the Auroras are caused by a fox running over the fells of Lapland, whipping up snow with its tail and sending sparks up the northern sky. The sparks form a colourful arc of fire that lights up the dark landscape. The Finnish name for the Northern Lights, “revontulet”, meaning “fox fire”, derives from this myth.

esign has changed as Canada has changed. We dress casually, we live casually; our buzzwords are ease and comfort.

As we have grown up, we have outgrown the notion of the truly classic room, the untouchable tableau, and the frosty formal. Instead, we concentrate on combining things that are unique and personal, knowing great rooms are a mixing bowl of the unexpected, the matched and the madcap.

Victorian can be fabulous if tidied up and sat beside an abstract canvas; let’s think of the generations holding hands and chatting when we start our design journey; all friends together. Now keep the room fluid and open, with strong functional floor plans, an unexpected ‘hello moment’ and the lasting bone structure of truthful, clear, visually concise furniture and remember, when something is real, it’s really good, period! So mix well and serve. New market trends show us that a little old is new again, whether it’s retro, reclaimed, recycled or re-inspired. At Kennedy Galleries, we are fortunate to have had the opportunity to curate an extensive collection of European and Canadian antiques.

“A little provenance goes a long way in filling the gap between the over-decorated and underdeveloped.” When a traveled item lands squarely into the design conversation we are the richer for it. It’s history, baby! “Archive, archive, archive!” is the season’s new battle cry. Bold geometry in all textile expressions drags pattern back into the spotlight, pushing colour forward and making contrast centre stage in any room. The artisans at Taylor King bring an onpoint presentation to this new vibe, targeting the strong design leads of nature inspiration and Japanese in their explosive new textile collection. Rediscovered velvets, brights, and Embroidery roar back to prominence as fabric takes a page from history’s look book and old designs are tweaked, palettes re-colourized and techniques reapplied in unexpected ways. ▷ 15 03 LUXURY LUXURY LISTED LISTED ■■ SEPTEMBER NOVEMBER 2017 2017

TRADITION WITH A TWIST

marks Hancock & Moore’s Soul chair as a luxury retro winner. Top construction, precision ergonomics and attention to detail are the hallmarks of this industry leader in fine furniture. Styled right, we love the texture of hand-applied metallic against the shadowed “hand” of the leather, the polish of a classic floor lamp juxtaposed against bright abstract, and add to that a very fine sketching of nail head to pop the details of the frame and we have a chair worthy of any room - A novel idea.

Emphasising a shapely chair or dramatizing a traditional tuxedo sofa, balance and scale is key to the success of pattern placement. Big, bold and beautiful can be at home on any piece if we follow the rules or know how to break them. The Ginori chair is a perfect example of understated wow as antelope rests easily on the outside frame, showing off the curvy back and demanding attention without throwing a design tantrum; manners, please. TRADITION WITH A TWIST In this vignette, venerable is made vital with seductive new framing styles cleaned up and curved up. The ancient allure of blue and white, the hint of oriental flavour, and the sportswear sensibility of easy care fibres translates to a talented mix of mod and marvelous as retro-inspired pieces mingle in easy conversation with graphic case goods and humble seagrass - now that’s a party! WITH

JACOB

LAUKAITAS

J

acob Laukaitis is no ordinary traveller. This 23-year old from Lithuania has spent the last four years travelling to various parts of the world, hiking and exploring while making a living to support his way of life. This entrepreneur who recently released the ebook “29 Ways to Quit and Become a Digital Nomad” has developed quite the following around the world with his real-time travel updates through Facebook, Instagram and YouTube. We reached out to Jacob to find out more about our favourite “Digital Nomad.” RIGHT:

Wanaka, New Zealand.

18 LUXURY LISTED ■ NOVEMBER 2017

HOW MANY COUNTRIES HAVE YOU TRAVELLED TO SO FAR? Last time I counted it was 54, but now I'm getting closer to 60 I guess. Though I don't think the quantity matters in this case - it's all about the quality. WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST INSPIRATION FOR TRAVELLING THE WORLD? When I was 19 years-old, I was invited to attend this really cool conference co-organized by the Malaysian government, where they invited 500 young entrepreneurs from all around the world to come to Malaysia for a week and work with one another on various non-profit projects. That trip was my very first time in Asia and I finally realized how big the world was and how little I knew about the different countries, religions, cuisines, ways of life and everything else. When I got back to Europe I couldn't stop thinking about how wonderful it'd be to travel the world 12 months a year and a few weeks later I booked my flight ticket to Bangkok and never stopped traveling every since. That was exactly 4 years ago. (P.S. If you need more information about how I started traveling the world, I just made a video talking about the whole story. WHAT WAS YOUR FAVOURITE LOCATION TO TRAVEL TO AND WHY? I would say my favorite countries in Asia are Japan, Taiwan and Indonesia. They all have incredible nature, distinct cultures and histories and the people there are absolutely amazing. Speaking of specific places, it's absolutely impossible to choose, but most of them would have to do with mountains and nature. HOW DO YOU DECIDE WHICH COUNTRIES TO TRAVEL TO AND HOW LONG YOU WANT TO STAY FOR? It's generally really spontaneous. I love spending my time at hostels, because I get to meet tons of interesting people with unique ways of life. It's quite easy for me to make new friends, so I keep meeting new people and obviously a lot of the times we talk about traveling. So someone would tell me "I just went to this place and it was the best thing ever" and then I'd think "Wow, that's just a few hours flight away from here, maybe I should go there". Then I go there and someone recommends me some other fascinating places and then I keep going there too. These days I have a huge list of adventures I want to go on, so I can't help thinking it'd be great to have more than 24 hours per day so that I could experience all those things before I'm 99 years old. â–ˇ 19 LUXURY LISTED â– NOVEMBER 2017

Q +A

WHAT IS ONE THING THAT YOU BRING WITH YOU ON EVERY TRIP, THAT YOU COULDN'T LIVE WITHOUT? I would say it's definitely my laptop. And the reason is that I work remotely while I travel, so if I have my computer with me, I never lose my income and thus I can afford to travel 12 months a year. Moreover, if I can make money by working on my laptop, I can buy all the other necessities everywhere I go.

WHAT IS THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE YOU'VE RUN INTO WHEN TRAVELLING?

DO YOU KEEP IN TOUCH WITH THE PEOPLE THAT YOU BECOME FRIENDS WITH ON YOUR TRIP?

WERE YOU HESITANT TO CONTINUE TRAVELLING AFTER YOUR CRASH IN THAILAND?

A lot of people talk about feeling lonely when they're traveling alone. I don't really feel that when I'm traveling very actively, because then I'm doing something new every single day and I never get bored. However, those times when I'm a little exhausted and I rent an AirBnb apartment for a month in some place I really enjoy, sometimes loneliness kicks in. I once again generally make quite a few local friends, but it's not that easy to develop this really deep bond between you and the people you meet while traveling, since you need a lot more time for that. So I'd say loneliness is probably the biggest challenge for solo travellers, though you definitely don't feel lonely as often as most people think.

Yes, yes, as much as I can. One of the coolest things is to meet those people in other places around the world and travel together.

Haha! Absolutely not! The very first day I was let out of the hospital, I hopped on my scooter and went to the beach with my friends, drinking coconuts and laughing our hearts out (everyone made jokes I looked like a panda and I didn't mind at all). And the reason for that is that this accident could have happened anywhere and there was absolutely nothing I could have done to prevent it. It's like if you are walking on the pavement and a car crashes into you. It's obviously really unfortunate, but it doesn't mean you should stop walking on pavements. If anything, that experience made me love traveling even more, because I once again realized how short our lives are and I want to do as much as I can before I die.

HOW MANY LANGUAGES HAVE YOU LEARNED FROM TRAVELLING? I can speak Lithuanian, English, Russian, Mandarin Chinese (I'm definitely not fluent, but very much conversational) and a little bit of Bahasa Indonesia (I'm definitely not conversational, but when I travel around Indonesia alone, I never use English, so it's good enough for me). This winter I want to spend a few months around Spain, so I'll try to pick up Spanish as it'll be really useful for me next year when I go to South America for a year or more.

WHAT IS SOME ADVICE YOU'D GIVE TO SOMEONE WHO IS LOOKING TO TRAVEL TO A COMPLETELY DIFFERENT COUNTRY WITH A WHOLE NEW CULTURE? Do not judge anything you see and be as open-minded as you possibly can. A lot of people, especially from the Western countries, look down on the so-called "third world" countries, because they're a bit dirtier or not as developed as their own countries. And they totally miss the point. The reason to travel is to understand why different people evolved in different ways and why they do things the way they do them. There will always be upsides and downsides anywhere you go, but if you keep an open mind, you will enjoy most places you go to.

AFTER YOUR RECOVERY, HAS YOUR CHANGED OUTLOOK ON LIFE CONTINUED TO REMIND YOU TO LIVE EVERYDAY AS IF IT'S YOUR LAST? Absolutely! I've always lived my life that way, but now I took it to another level I guess. Life's short, why wast a second, hey? :)

TOP LEFT: Iran. TOP RIGHT: Dubai, United Arab Emirates. ABOVE LEFT: ABOVE RIGHT: Erawan Waterfall in Bangkok, Thailand.

20 LUXURY LISTED â– NOVEMBER 2017

Mount Ruapehu, New Zealand.

“Life's too short. Why waste a second?”

TOP: Kathmandu, Nepal. BELOW: Hobbiton, New Zealand. BOTTOM: Mount Everest.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE PART ABOUT BEING ABLE TO SHARE YOUR EXPERIENCES THROUGH VIDEOS ON YOUTUBE AND OTHER SOCIAL MEDIA PLATFORMS? The fact that I can inspire people to travel the world. I truly believe that if everyone traveled (at least a bit), the world would be a much more beautiful place with less racism, sexism and resentment towards one another. That is why I made it my life's mission to inspire millions of people to travel the world and I'll do all I can to make it happen. WHAT WOULD YOU SAY IS THE BEST PART OF WORKING REMOTELY AS A DIGITAL NOMAD? The fact that you can go anywhere, anytime, for as long as you wish. WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO CREATE YOUR FIRST COMPANY, CHAMELEON JOHN, AT THE AGE OF 15? ChameleonJohn was not my first company. It was probably my 6th or 7th and I established it at the age of 19. What inspired me to create my first companies at the age of 15 was the fact that I hated not being financially independent from my parents and I wanted to fully control my own life so that I could do whatever I wanted and go wherever I wanted.

21 LUXURY LISTED ■ NOVEMBER 2017

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO WRITE YOUR EBOOK, "29 PROVEN WAY TO QUIT THE 9 TO 5 AND BECOME A DIGITAL NOMAD"? The book is now called "29 Proven Ways to Quit The 9 to 5 And Become a Digital Nomad?" (though it's the same thing, just 10 more ways). I wanted to write that book because I received literally thousands of messages from people all around the world asking me how I was able to afford to travel all the time. And I thought the best way for me to inspire and empower other people to follow suit would be to simply write a short e-book that anyone could download for free and find 29 ways to make money remotely while traveling the world. The feedback has been incredibly positive and I'm looking for ways to get it into the hands of even more people now. WHERE IS THE NEXT PLACE YOU PLAN TO EXPLORE? I'm currently touring the Middle East, then I want to spend some time traveling around Europe (I find it relatively boring compared to Asia, but there are definitely quite a few interesting places to explore) and then I want to spend a year or a year and a half traveling all around South America, since I've never been there before. Can't wait to see what it's like!

ntil recently, passing down an inheritance was something to be expected. Parents would save enough money so their kids would receive some sort of windfall that they could then put toward their own retirements. But several studies over the last few years have shown that some boomers plan to spend what they have instead of passing it on. While Canadian data on this subject is sparse, a recent Australian study* found that one-fifth of baby boomers plan on dipping into their kids’ inheritance to take trips. A 2016 U.K. study** found that one-sixth of people between 50 and 70 plan to spend all of their money before they die, while a 2014 report*** indicated that 66% of people between 50 and 65 would rather spend their money than pass it on to their children. Christine Van Cauwenberghe, VicePresident, Tax & Estate Planning at Investors Group says that, in her experience, most boomers still want to pass down something

to their children but many will likely end up spending a much larger chunk of their savings in retirement than their parents would have. “When boomers do a financial plan, it might become clear that they’ll need the majority of their assets to support themselves, especially as they age and the need for costly medical care escalates.

People may need to use the money they’ve saved, but still want to leave something to their children. Insurance is one way to do both.” If boomers buy life insurance, and if they continue making payments throughout their life, their children will receive the policy benefits upon the parents’ death. The parents can then spend more of their money during their lifetime. Another option is for boomers to hang on to their house until they die or until they have

to move into an assisted living facility. The children can then sell the home and take the proceeds as an inheritance. This option can become difficult when the boomer parents have their retirement money tied up in their house -- meaning they’ll have to sell to access those funds. Whether to spend what they have now or pass some of it down is a decision that should be made through frank discussions between boomer parents and their kids. “Everyone should know what’s happening,” says Van Cauwenberghe. “Explain your motivations and be sure your true legacy is not just about money, but support for everyone’s plans for the future.” Your professional advisor can help you make the financial and legacy decisions that are best for you. n industry first and still on top! Lexus introduced Canadians to the very first luxury cross-utility vehicle, its RX 300, back in 1998. Almost twenty years later, its styling, power, and performance have all evolved and improved and the fourth-generation RX is still the most popular premium mid-sized utility. New angular styling lines and an aggressive front design gave my test RX 450h F Sport a daring, bad-ass outer appearance. In contrast, a plush, luxurious interior, outstanding safety features, 24 LUXURY LISTED ■ NOVEMBER 2017

and light-green power plant more accurately reflect the softer, more-caring true personality of this RX. If “the vehicle that has everything” exists, then Lexus RX 450h is surely a candidate. It has sharp styling yet is highly functional, offers excellent power yet is fuel-efficient and offers a super comfortable ride on-road yet is surprisingly capable off-road. On top of all that, and like all Lexus vehicles, the RX has a stellar reputation for being outstandingly reliable.

Yes, that little “h” in its name indicates that RX 450h is a hybrid. Gas power comes from a 3.5L V6 (Atkinson cycle) engine and when assisted by a pair of (front and rear) electric motors the RX 450h can provide a grand total of 308 horsepower and 247 lb.-ft. of torque. Behind the wheel, that translates to impressive off-line acceleration and a quick, effortless pass around that slow-moving truck on the highway. An EV mode also allows noiseless pure electric operation for short distances (parking garage use etc.). The first thing that will probably grab your attention, when you slide behind the wheel of an RX 450h, is a huge centre dash multimedia screen. The 12.3-inch display can be split to show two vehicle systems (such as navigation & audio) at the same time. Other delightful features in my test RX 450h were its massive panorama glass roof, a driver head-up display, an electrically heated front windshield, auto dimming side mirrors, a wireless cell phone charger shelf, power folding rear seatbacks and a power tailgate that can be remotely operated by a wave motion over the rear Lexus badge.

Drive gets to all four wheels via a continuously variable transmission and an Active Torque All Wheel Drive, which evenly distributes torque between the front and rear axles. Official combined (city/highway) fuel consumption is just 8.0L/100km city/highway, which is exceptionally good in this market segment. The Lexus hybrid system is also impressively smooth, quiet and slick in the way it transitions from electric to gas engine propulsion or uses a combination of both.

The new Lexus RX 450h provides rear passengers with some extra leg room compared to previous generations. It’s structurally stronger and has a lower centre of gravity, which gives it a more agile driving feel. And in case you didn’t know, it’s also made in Canada. Base Price: $70,250.00 Price as Tested: $79,121.25 YIN A delightful blend of sophistication, comfort and functionality, the Eco-friendly Lexus RX 450h is an outstanding all season luxury vehicle. Stuffed

ACORN SQUASH

TIP

WITH MUSHROOM, A P P L E A N D WA L N U T hese savoury stuffed squash are an easy accompaniment to a festive meal or casual weeknight dinner. The meaty mushrooms add beautiful texture to the stuffing, while the apples add a layer of tartness and bite.

Ingredients 4 small-medium sized acorn squash, seeded, cut in half lengthwise Salt and pepper 2 tbsp (30 mL) olive oil 8 oz (227 g) fresh mixed mushrooms (portabella, shiitake, oyster), coarsely chopped 2 celery stalks, thinly diced 2 Ontario apples, peeled and finely diced 3 tbsp (45 mL) butter 1 tbsp (15 mL) fresh sage leaves, finely chopped 1 cup (250 mL) vegetable stock 1/2 cup (125 mL) walnuts, roughly chopped 1 small loaf of day-old sourdough or French bread, cut into ¼ inch cubes (approximately 5 cups)

0:10 Prep • 0:45 Cook • 8 Servings

METHOD

Use Ontario Idared, Golden Delicious, Honeycrisp, or Empire apples.

Step One Preheat oven to 350°F/175°C.

Step Two Cut acorn squash in half lengthwise. Remove the seeds. Season the inside with salt and pepper. Place cut side down on a baking sheet lined with parchment. Bake about 30 minutes or until soft.

Step Three Meanwhile, in a large sauce pan heat olive oil. Add mushrooms and sauté for 3-4 minutes. Add celery and continue to sauté for 5 minutes. Lower heat and add apples. Continue to cook until apples become tender, about 5 minutes. To the pan add butter, sage, and vegetable stock. Heat just until butter is melted. Remove from heat and allow to cool.

Step Four Place chopped walnuts and diced bread in a large bowl. Pour warm vegetable stock mixture over bread. Using your hands toss the bread until it is well coated and most of stock is absorbed.

Step Five Remove squash from oven and turn it cut side up. Divide the stuffing among each squash half; spoon the stuffing into the cavity of each squash until filled. Return to 350°F/175°C oven and bake until stuffing is golden brown, approximately 15-20 minutes.

Step Six Serve hot alongside a festive ham or weeknight roast chicken. www.newscanada.com

Winter

TIRES

MAY SAVE YOU MORE THAN JUST MONEY THIS WINTER! ith winter just around the corner, the most important thing you can do is to equip your vehicle with winter tires.

INSURANCE COMPANIES NOW OFFER DISCOUNTS FOR WINTER TIRES In Ontario, as of January 1st, 2016 all insurance companies must offer a discount to policyholders that use winter tires. The discount can vary between companies as to how it is applied and ranges typically from 3% to 5% per year. I am with TD Meloche Monnex and they require my winter tires to be on my vehicle between December 1st and March 30th to receive a discount. I have been using winter tires for over 15 years, so this discount is just a bonus now. The real value, however, is the unbelievable difference in handling and braking that winter tires provide.

DO I NEED WINTER TIRES WHEN I HAVE ALL-SEASON TIRES? Yes. All vehicles will absolutely benefit from winter tires even when compared to brand new all-season tires. And no, it does not matter if you drive an all-wheel drive or fourwheel drive vehicle! In an attempt to perform in all weather conditions, all-season tires use a rubber compound and tread pattern that ends up being a compromise in all seasons vs. ideal in any particular season - especially winter. In reality, they perform poorly in colder temperatures and in snow or icy conditions. If you live in Florida, they work just fine all year round. In colder climates like Canada, they really are just a three season tire. WHY WINTER TIRES WORK BETTER Tire manufacturers are spending a lot of time and money on research and development surrounding winter tires, which has resulted in amazing advancements 30 LUXURY LISTED â– NOVEMBER 2017

over the past number of years. Winter tires used to focus largely on aggressive deep tread which resulted in a noisy drive. With advancements in technology, winter tires handle better, last longer, and are much quieter than before. There are a few factors, in addition to tread pattern, that contributes to winter tires outperforming all-season tires. Once the temperature drops below 7 °C, the rubber compound used in allseason tires becomes very hard (like a hockey puck) and thus performs poorly in cold,

slippery conditions. Winter tires utilize a softer compound that is more flexible and is thus able to grip the road, snow, or ice better for both handling and stopping. However, it is not just the rubber that is important. There are thousands of hairline tiny cuts on the tread in winter tires called sipes that help grip to snow and ice by displacing water. The other big development is the use of silica that is added to the rubber compound. Silica is similar to sand and allows for the tread to grip better. Not all winter tires are created equal. You will notice that certain premium brands of winter tires are more expensive than other brands. I would say you get what you pay for often in life, and winter tires are no exception. The premium brands spend more money typically on research and development and the studies that I have read indicate improved handling and stopping capabilities with the premium brands. Winter tires will have a mountain snowflake symbol on the tire indicating it has met the Rubber Association of Canada's severe snow performance requirements. ALL-WEATHER TIRES VS. WINTER TIRES There is a relatively new category of tire with only a couple of companies making them, called all-weather tires. They are a true mix of all-season and winter tires. They have the mountain snowflake symbol on them, which all-season tires do not. All-weather tires can be left on year-round vs. winter tires that need to be removed in the Spring once the temperature gets above 7 °C consistently. This is due to the fact that the tread on an all-weather tire does not become as soft in the summer, which helps avoid excessive tread wear that happens on winter tires if driven in warm summer months. An all-weather tire may be a good option for someone who lives in a city with good snow clearing and does not make trips into ski country often. The performance is not quite as good on the snow and ice when compared to a premium brand winter tire; however, it is certainly far superior to an all-season tire. If you primarily drive in the city and storage is an issue, then an all-weather tire may be a decent option for you. Keep in mind that not all insurance companies may provide a discount for all-weather tires.

NUMBERS (AND VIDEOS) DON'T LIE I hear from many people that they have driven their whole life without any accidents using all-season tires and that you just need to be careful when driving in winter. Or, that they have four-wheel drive and don't need winter tires. Sure, driving carefully in certain weather conditions is a must. However, the numbers don't lie when it comes to improved stopping and handling with winter tires vs. all-season tires. Consumer Reports did an independent test using a front wheel drive Toyota Camry with winter tires and an all wheel drive Honda CR-V with all-season tires. They tested the vehicles at 100 km/h and it took the Camry 298 feet to stop vs. 668 feet for the CR-V to stop. That means the Camry stopped 370 feet before the CR-V did... that's more than the length of a football field! Winter tires stop you faster, at all speeds, period! There are many videos on YouTube that show how much better winter tires perform in stopping and handling tests. I suggest you take a look at a few as it is amazing to see just how much better they perform. The numbers are so compelling that in Quebec it has been mandatory for all cars to have winter tires since 2014. 31 LUXURY LISTED â– NOVEMBER 2017

While you may dread the thought of winter just around the corner, if you equip your vehicle with winter tires then at least you are preparing yourself for the fluffy white stuff that will soon be flying. I can only hope that 100% of Ontario drivers start using winter tires, either through Provincial legislation or through the realization that our roads would much safer if we all had that snowflake symbol on the only thing that connects us to the road.
