AUTOMOTIVE

GENESIS G90 enesis, the car name, is one that you probably (and rightfully) associate with Hyundai. Now it’s a stand-alone premium auto brand, an ambitious new brand that plans to redefine and enhance the meaning of “Premium” for Canadian auto buyers.

As a pampered Genesis buyer you enjoy conciergestyle service both during and after your luxury vehicle purchase, it’s called a “human-centered purchase and ownership” experience. A test drive can be arranged at your home or office. As a Genesis owner, the vehicle is picked up and you’re left a courtesy vehicle, when servicing is required. An all-inclusive purchase price, plus an all-inclusive warranty (5 years/100,000 km including scheduled maintenance) complete the new-age Genesis experience. The G90 is the big, flagship Genesis sedan. A long hood, a long wheelbase and extra wide rear doors give it a posh limo-look and inside there’s a roomy, passenger experience to match. This car is all about style, comfort and luxury auto refinements, in every seating position. While Genesis may not have the instant premium name recognition advantage that its competitors enjoy, it’s determined to earn it. Under that long, sleek hood, the G90 is powered by either a twin-turbo 3.3-litre V6 that can produce 365 horsepower or a 5.0-litre V8 GDI engine that can produce 420 horsepower. Both

engines are mated to eight-speed automatic transmissions with multiple drive modes, paddle shifters on the steering wheel and all-wheel-drive is standard equipment. Step on the gas… this car can really move. An 800 km plus round trip to the Okanagan Valley region of BC, with three passengers onboard, was an opportune test of my G90. The steep, seemingly endless climb from Hope to the Coquihalla Hwy summit is a renowned engine workout (and wrecker). Not a problem for G90, even though it had the smaller V6 engine. We swiftly, glided past trucks and slower vehicles struggling with the assent.

The Genesis brand, which currently also includes a less expensive G80 model, is expected to grow to six models by 2021.

TYPICAL G90 WALK-BY ENCOUNTER “Wow, what kind of car is that?” A: It’s the new Genesis G90. “So it’s a Hyundai?” A: No, it’s a Genesis, an all-new premium auto brand and G90 is the top model. “So, it’s made by Hyundai?” A: No, it’s made by Genesis… which is owned by Hyundai.

BIG CAR - BIG SPEAKERS BIG SOUND: Yes, of course, it has Napa leather, real wood and clever accent lighting, but those massive aluminum alloy Lexicon door speaker grilles were a work of art, in an awesome sound system.

Steering wheel feel is on the light and mushy side in standard mode, but switching to the sport (or individual) mode stiffened and dramatically improved matters. All aboard seemed to be very impressed at how incredibly quiet the G90 was at highway cruising speeds and the suspension was sumptuously compliant. Powerful, smooth and quiet… G90 passed the long road trip test with top marks. 8 LUXURY LISTED ■ OCTOBER 2017

TECHNOLOGY

5 Smart TECHNOLOGY UPGRADES

TO MAKE THE BATHROOM THE BRAINIEST ROOM IN THE HOUSE

S

mart technology has found a place in virtually every room in the home, even the one where we take care of our most low-tech needs. In fact, thanks to innovations like sensoroperated, self-cleaning toilets, moisture-sensing ventilation fans and digital shower controls, it's possible to turn an ordinary bathroom into the brainiest room in the house. If you're ready to upgrade your bathroom with the latest smart technology, here are five elements to put at the top of your must-have list:

1 / SMARTER SHOWER From showerheads with light and sound, to digital temperature and water pressure controls that you can set from your smartphone, an array of high-tech features is available to elevate the simple act of getting clean to the level of a luxurious, high-tech experience. You can find something for every preference. Love to shower at night? Install a showerhead that features its own lighting. Dislike fiddling with the controls every morning to get just the right temperature? Opt for digital temperature controls that allow for multiple pre-settings for individual users. Focused on conservation? Try a showerhead that senses what you're doing - washing your hair, shaving your legs - and automatically adjusts the water flow accordingly. 10 LUXURY LISTED â– OCTOBER 2017

TOP LEFT: Neorest 550H Dual Flush Toilet. TOP RIGHT: Robern medicine cabinet. BOTTOM: Keen Home Smart Vent.

2 / INTELLIGENT TOILET A toilet that cleans itself is a dream come true for many people, but TOTO boosts the intelligence of its NEOREST AC wall-mount toilet even higher. The intelligent toilet features a WASHLET personal cleansing system that uses warm, aerated water for comfort, a warm air dryer and a heated seat. An automatic opening and closing function and auto-flush ensure you never have to touch the toilet. The toilet keeps itself (and the environment in your bathroom) clean with a flushing system that uses an environmentally friendly combination of gravity and high-speed water jets to spin away waste, while an in-bowl catalytic deodorizer helps keep the air fresh. The bowl itself is glazed with titanium dioxide and zirconium, which when activated by the toilet's integrated UV light, creates molecular reactions that help keep the bowl free from visible and invisible waste. Not only will you not need harsh detergents to clean the toilet, it's is also WaterSense labelled, and uses just 1.28 gallons per flush (gpf) for solid waste and 0.9 gpf for liquid. Visit www.totousa.com to learn more.

3 / VERSATILE VENTILATION Bathroom ventilation fans serve practical and cosmetic purposes. Ventilation removes moisture and humidity that could promote the growth of mold and mildew, and can help exhaust unpleasant odors. Of course, not everyone puts ventilation to its optimum use, and that's where a new style of bathroom fan comes in.

Ventilation fans that sense humidity - such as after someone has taken a long, hot shower - turn on automatically to help remove excess moisture from the room. Some fans can communicate wirelessly with wall switches or with an app that allows you to control the fan from your smartphone.

4 / MULTI-TASKING MIRROR Mirrors and medicine cabinets aren't just for reflection anymore. Now you can kit out your smart bathroom with mirrors that feature built-in TVs and can communicate with your home's security cameras, and medicine cabinets with defogging features that can let you get to your post-shower shave faster. Refrigerated medicine cabinets are perfect for preserving delicate drugs and cosmetics, and you can find both mirrors and medicine cabinets with built-in USB ports for charging your devices.

11 LUXURY LISTED ■ OCTOBER 2017

5 / ADVANCED ACCESSORIES Of course accessories can be additions that put any bathroom over the top, and you never have to settle for ordinary accessories in your smarter bathroom. Enhance the usability and convenience of your bathroom with items like: • A small robot that mops floor tiles automatically. • A Bluetooth-enabled toothbrush that communicates with your smartphone to monitor how well you've brushed. • A smart scale that helps you track your weight and health progress. • Touch-free soap dispensers. • A towel rack that uses hot air and ultraviolet light to dry towels and keep them fresh longer. By upgrading to tech-savvy versions of everyday bathroom elements like toilets, faucets and showers, it's possible to make your bathroom not only one of the mostused rooms in the house, but the smartest as well. MANAGING YOUR

MONEY M

ost Canadians know they don’t have to pay capital gains tax on the sale of their primary residence and, until recently, you didn’t even have to mention a sale on your tax return. But while the capitals gains on your home can still be exempted from tax, there are new reporting requirements that, if not followed properly, could cause you some major tax-related headaches. Last October, the Canadian government announced new measures requiring everyone to report the sale of their home on their tax return. If the sale is not reported, you could be re-assessed and the new rules permit the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) to review property sales beyond the standard reassessment period. You may even be subject to a penalty in the future. CRA has stated that it is unlikely a penalty will be issued when the sale occurred in 2016, given that the reporting requirement is brand new, but it may not be so lenient going forward. The new rule is part of the government’s attempt to rein in potential abuses of the

principal residence exemption (PRE), such as non-Canadian residents claiming the exemption and others claiming it on a second property in the same year. Usually, 50% of a capital gain on an asset must be reported as taxable income. But the PRE allows Canadian residents to be exempt from paying tax on capital gains on their principal residence. Only one property can be designated per year as a principal residence, therefore gains may be taxable on the sale of a second property, like a cottage.

still to be used with additional details to be provided on Schedule 3.

With the new rule, you will have to fill out the Schedule 3 of the T1 tax return to report the sale of the property where you designate the property as your principal residence for all the years it was owned. Information required on Schedule 3 includes the date the property was acquired, the address of the property, and the proceeds received. If you are designating a property as a principal residence for only some of the years it was owned, e.g. when a cottage will be designated for one or more of those years, form T2091 is

As with every other aspect of your financial life, it pays to get help from your professional advisor before you file your next tax return.

12 LUXURY LISTED ■ OCTOBER 2017

Though the change has been public since October, it hasn’t been widely publicized. The bottom line is this: if you sell your home in the 2016 tax year or later, complete Schedule 3 at tax time to claim the PRE and to avoid any potential penalties for late filing. Most individuals previously eligible to claim the PRE will continue to remain eligible, but the CRA will now have a record of that claim.

DEMAND FOR

I

ELECTRIC CARS

have been involved in the auto industry for over 25 years and witnessed many advancements over this time, including the relatively recent development of vehicles that run on electricity.

There are two types of electric vehicles. One is a plug in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) that combines an electric motor with a combustion engine. The other option is a battery electric vehicle (BEV), which is solely powered by electricity (making it incredibly quiet). Both have been around for about eight years in Canada. I just bought my first full electric vehicle this past July.

I have been following the alternative energy market for many years and have always wondered which would emerge as the mass produced “fuel” of choice, between bio-diesel, hydrogen, ethanol (which is corn based), and electricity. I now believe we will see a tremendous shift (especially in Ontario) towards PHEVs and BEVs. There are three main changes that have occurred primarily within the past 12 months that I think will trigger a great increase in the demand, especially for BEVs: improved battery technology, faster charging, and provincial involvement.

14 LUXURY LISTED ■ OCTOBER 2017

BATTERY TECHNOLOGY Until recently most BEVs could travel less than 200 km on a single charge, with Tesla being the main (though much pricier) exception to this rule. The variety of BEV options has increased greatly of late with one car (Chevrolet Bolt) that can travel twice as far as most of its competitors - at a price under $50K. The all new 2018 Nissan Leaf was recently unveiled and will have a reported range of 241kms per charge. They have announced a more powerful version to be released in about a year with even greater range and I expect other manufacturers to not be far behind, including the much-anticipated (and more affordable) Tesla Model 3.

LEFT: 2018 Nissan Leaf. ABOVE: 2018 Tesla Model BOTTOM LEFT: Charging the BMW X5 xDrive40e. BOTTOM RIGHT: 2017 Chevrolet Bolt EV Interior.

3.

The big change with charging technology is the installation of level 3 rapid chargers, which can charge an empty battery to between 80% and 100% capacity in about 30 to 45 minutes. While this technology has existed for some time, they are only recently being installed for public use in many locations across Canada. These level 3 chargers typically only work on BEVs and not on PHEVs. This now makes it possible to do a road trip by simply using one of several apps available to plan your route around available level 3 chargers.

PROVINCIAL INCENTIVES AND INFRASTRUCTURE CHARGING TIME Most PHEVs and BEVs have only had two options for charging until fairly recently: level 1 and level 2. A level 1 charge can be done with any regular 120V outlet (regular wall outlet) and will take up to approximately 24 hours. It is slow but at least you can charge your car just about anywhere. A level 2 charger is typically installed by many owners at their home and requires a special charger that runs off a 240V outlet (like a dryer outlet) and would take up to eight hours for a full charge.

This year, the Ontario government implemented major changes in their commitment to moving towards less reliance on fossil fuels. The Ontario Government has revised the Electric Vehicle Incentive Program (EVIP) so that an electric vehicle (PHEV or BEV) with a battery larger than 16 kW that can seat five or more passengers is eligible for a rebate of $14,000 (including tax). This is a significant increase from the previous rebate of $8500 and is the largest available in Canada. This rebate is often applied right at the dealership and is applicable even on leases.

15 LUXURY LISTED â– OCTOBER 2017

Rebates are also available on the purchase of a level 2 charger under the Electric Vehicle Charging Incentive Program (EVCIP): 50% of the purchase price of the charger up to $500 as well as up to $500 for 50% of the installation costs. Through the Electric Vehicle Chargers Ontario (EVCO) program, the government is partnering with business like IKEA and will add approximately five hundred level 2 and 3 chargers in Ontario. This will make it much easier to take your BEV on longer drives and simply plan your trips around known charging stations, grab a bite, or do some work while you 'fill up' and continue on your way. While many of the above policies and changes are just starting to influence consumer choices, I believe we will be seeing many more electric cars in the coming years ahead, including my neighbors as I (silently) drive by them.

BOOK REVIEW

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER

I GIVE A

I

F*CK

ABOUT THIS BOOK

’ve read a lot of self-help books in my time. A LOT! But there is no book that has helped me to feel better about myself and life as The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck: The Counterintuitive Approach to Living a Good Life. Yes, the book is filled with the f-word but I highly recommend this book to anyone who has ever felt insecure, anxious, hopeless, victimized, entitled, annoyed by life’s trivialities, felt right and everyone else was wrong, or felt scared of... anything at all. It’s also for those who feel that anything that goes wrong is someone else’s fault. I think that covers all of us. The author, Mark Manson, is not a worldrenowned psychoanalyst. He’s a successful blogger but his writing is backed by some pretty extensive research. Thank God there’s a book that finally says stop looking in the mirror and telling yourself you’re happy because if you’re doing that, chances are, you are not happy and it’s totally okay to have negative feelings. Social media, by the way, is a major culprit by making us believe that we have to be the best all the time and to be

having the best time. This constant search for happiness and perfection is making us all unhappy so stop trying. Sometimes life sucks. The negative emotions we feel are a call to action - change what needs to be changed. Start caring about what’s truly important and it isn’t the person who cut you off in traffic. What eventually makes us happy is surmounting the associated negative experiences. If you want the perfect body, you’ve got to accept the pain that comes with training for hours a day almost every day. Want the perfect relationship, the one where you’re old, still holding hands and having sex? You have to go through some painful moments, stick it out when it might feel easier to run for the hills, have painful and vulnerable conversations, stay faithful no matter what. Want to be rich? You’ll have to work harder and sacrifice free time, get your finances in order, do a budget, take risks - you get the drift - all those painful and mundane things that a lot of us avoid doing. Manson does not tell you to stop caring about everything entirely. He shows you how to discover what you value and to commit to it. 16 LUXURY LISTED ■ OCTOBER 2017

Manson tells you in no uncertain terms to face some uncomfortable facts about yourself: most of us are not special and extraordinary and the quicker we accept it, the better. The problems you face actually make you happy when you solve them. Most of the time you’re wrong and you’ll never grow if you keep thinking you’re right. Manson says we’ve been asking the wrong question the whole time. It’s not what do you enjoy but what pain do you want to sustain? This is the path to happiness. I could go on and on so I’ll just say you’ve got to read this book. You’ve just got to. It may be the one that saves you from yourself, and gets you to the place where you need to go. But please, don’t ask to borrow my copy. It stays by my bedside.

Custom drawer pulls and handles make a powerful statement in kitchen design. While seemingly small, these pieces unite all elements in the room's aesthetic. Handles wrapped in leather bring both textural and visual appeal, while hand-carved wooden pulls cater to rustic elements when paired with exposed brick or mineral gray countertops.

BEER PAIRINGS 02 22 LUXURY LUXURYLISTED LISTED■ ■SEPTEMBER OCTOBER 2017 2017

LEARN THE BASICS

PICK THE PERFECT GLASS

Many of beer's flavours come from malted cereal grains - primarily barley - that contribute to its sweetness, colour, and richness. The flavours range from bread-y and biscuit-y to a roasted or chocolate taste. All styles fall into one of two families, ales and lagers. Lagers are fermented for a longer time at cooler temperatures, resulting in a crisp beer with a lighter body. Pilsners are a great example of a popular lager style, and are clean and refreshing showcasing light grains with a balance of spicy hops on the finish. Ales tend to have more body and greater flavour complexity, which lends itself nicely to styles that emphasize bitterness or rich malt flavours. Stouts are a great example of a darker ale, with roasted barley providing colour and a coffee-like flavour.

Remember that cool-looking glassware is more than an aesthetic consideration - the size, shape, and stem all work together to affect the drink's taste, carbonation, amount of head (foam), hop oils, and aroma. Choose a mug or stein for stronger ales and lagers, a classic pint glass for lighter beers and blondes, a flute or tulip glass for fruity beers, and a Weizen glass for wheat beers.

DRINK WITH YOUR EYES

ABOVE:

Colour is great way to find out what malt flavours you can expect and how strong the beer will taste. Choose a lighter beer like a blonde for a refreshing taste and go darker for increasingly richer flavours. Make sure not to confuse darkness with bitterness there's no way to determine how hoppy a beer is based off its colour. 23 LUXURY LISTED â– OCTOBER 2017

PAIR THIS WITH THAT Lagers are perfect for light, fresh dishes or anything involving bread, wheat beers and fruit beers are great for vegetarian dishes and salads, and pale ales are exactly what your turkey needs. For desserts and winter comfort foods, choose a sweeter beer like Granville Island's Lions Winter Ale. With complex layers of vanilla, cocoa, and caramel, this brew gives you plenty to get warm and cozy with and is nicely balanced so the sweeter flavours don't overwhelm. www.newscanada.com

STYLE + FASHION

Welcome WELLGROOMED SELF B AC K

TO YOUR

ince the kids have returned to school, it’s a good time for us to return to the basics. Specifically, including grooming, finding a proper barber and a place us gents can call our own. One may ask, “what’s wrong with a hip, cool and unisex salon?” Well, if I’m being honest, nothing, but it’s nowhere as “right” as a traditional men’s barbershop. I’m talking about a men’s sanctuary, a place to check-out, hang-out, clean up, have conversations and be surrounded by like minded guys doing what us guys do, without compromise or apologies. For far too long, we have lost that sense of exclusivity, we left our safe havens, our no nonsense, no chatter, no BS barbershops for spalike chemical and over decorated boutique salons. We were forced to share territory with our lady friends in environments that were well, less than manly. We lost that place to call our own. Thankfully, as with most things, we’re well on our way to full circle in a trends lifecycle. Men’s grooming shops, traditional barber shops and men’s social clubs have been popping up all over the place. Why is this a good thing? Obvious facts aside, this return to “cool” helps us maintain or improve our appearance, and encourages us to clean up and stay sharp, which goes far in building confidence, social status

and personal presentation. The beauty of this resurgence, is we get to do so in our new favourite hangout, our own little secret, a place we can call our own where we can meet up for a coffee, beer, connect with neighbours or even check the game highlights. It’s not a bar or nightclub… it’s local, it’s part of our community and it’s a place to drop in, bring our boys, form friendships and tell lies. These new shops are not exactly a throwback from the Fifties where you’d be betting the ponies, checking out a Playboy magazine and eating meatball sandwiches. Shops have evolved, these new environments are typically draped in all things "guy", from the mounted moose head or deer antlers to the retro photos from back in the day…with some fine points of difference. Add in premium grooming products from talcs, lotions, beard oils and razors, to fine lifestyle accessories like socks, ties, cuff links, and in some cases cigars and smoking accessories. If the shop is “all things guy,” you could see a line of well curated camping supplies, cool office pieces and even food & beverage products like sauces, marinades, carving knives and scotch tumblers. It’s truly a thing of beauty. Now these are not exclusively men’s clubs. Women are not banned and are welcome to visit, but to be honest not many feel the desire to be part of this “guy thing” and that’s perfectly fine, but better yet, they crave a version of the same just for them. 24 LUXURY LISTED ■ OCTOBER 2017

As we step back into routine, you might consider adding a regular visit to your local shop, if you’ve not found your new second home, I suggest you find one, take back the barbershop, stay sharp and keep this tradition alive. We recommend you check out a few local shops, try out different barbers and find that just right addition to your routine. You’ll be happy you did. Good luck gents, stand tall, stay sharp and be a man. MARITIME SEAFOOD CHOWDER

F

or most of us, the transition from summer to fall can be tough. Long, sunny days and trips to the beach or pool are quickly replaced by cold, dark nights spent trying to warm up. As temperatures drop, we reach for comforting heartier dishes and recipes featuring in-season produce. To make the transition a little easier, try this classic velvety chowder that celebrates cool autumn nights. It’s made with Canadian milk, which is free of antibiotic residues or artificial bovine growth hormone, so you can feel good about serving this meal to your family.

Ingredients 1 tbsp butter 2 stalks celery, chopped 1 onion, chopped 1 bay leaf 1 tsp dried dill or dried thyme 2 large Yukon Gold potatoes, peeled and diced 2 cups water or fish stock 1/3 cup all-purpose flour 3 cups milk 2 cups chopped raw skinless fish fillets or cooked seafood (shrimp, lobster, scallops, crab, clams, oysters) or a combination 2 tbsp freshly squeezed lemon juice Whole grain crackers, crumbled 1/2 tsp salt 1/4 tsp pepper

0:10 Prep • 0:20 - 0:25 Cook • 4-6 Servings

METHOD Step One In a large pot, melt butter over medium heat. Sauté celery, onion, bay leaf, dill, salt and pepper for about five minutes or until onions start to brown. Stir in potatoes; sauté for two minutes.

Step Two Increase heat to medium-high; stir in water and bring to a boil. Cover, reduce heat to medium and boil for about five minutes or until potatoes are almost tender.

Step Three Whisk flour into milk and stir into pot; bring to a simmer, stirring often.

Step Four Stir in fish or seafood; simmer, stirring often for five minutes or until fish is opaque and flakes easily with a fork or seafood is hot. Discard bay leaf. Stir in lemon juice and season to taste with salt and pepper.

Step Five Ladle into bowls and top each serving with crumbled crackers. www.newscanada.com

NYFW

20I7

IN A GLIMPSE

ashion is a constant life cycle, it lives, it dies and sometimes it even resurrects. When it does, like at New York Fashion Week, it's beautifully astonishing. NYFW 2017 brought fashion decades back into vibrant colour clashing garments. Baby boomers were reminded of the simpler times with hues of blue mixed with yellow, while millennials were ready to embrace the trend. TOP: Models walk runway for the Noon by Noor. Designers like Delpozo and Sies Marjan redefined the forties all the way through to the seventies with zig-zags, flowers and shocking colour combinations. Rihanna's line, Fenty x Puma, showcased street wear that's chic and nostalgic to the 90's. As we predicted in our last issue, fishnets are still the new leggings. Designers such as Rihanna, had models walk down the catwalk showing just how edgy and dashing they can look. Fashion has taken many steps forward, however its trend this autumn is definitely all about comfort. Many designers were pictured in a comfortable duo. Victoria Beckham was photographed after her show in New York City, in blue jeans, a white tee, and to add a pop of colour, purple pumps. Ralph Lauren's ready to wear collection 2017/18 had many chic and adequate combinations.

Pointed toe boots have proven worthy of staying in our closets one more season. They were seen a plethora of times in September, as Fashion Week's around the world showcased the versatility of them for every outfit. Now that the weather is cooling down, we can finally enjoy our lattes in colour popping scarves and of course, stylish boots.

DRINK OF THE MONTH

Autumn

SANGRIA Recipe supplied by Noble Bistro

N

ow that summer is over and the cooler weather is with us, why not try this Autumninspired Sangria recipe that is worthy of a new tradition at your Thanksgiving table. This sangria is the drink to make this fall. It combines red wine, brandy, cinnamon, apple cider, citrus, and of course - sweet honeycrisp apples! We highly suggest doubling the recipe because everyone will want more than one glass.

Ingredients

Directions

3 cinnamon sticks (plus more for garnish)

Place the cinnamon sticks, apples, and orange slices in a large pitcher. Add wine, apple cider, brandy, orange juice, and lemon juice. Allow to sit in the refrigerator for 6-24 hours. Taste; if you'd like it to be sweeter, add 1-2 tablespoons granulated sugar, honey, or agave.

2 honeycrisp apples, chopped 1 orange, thinly sliced 1 (750 ml) bottle red wine 1 and 3/4 cups homemade apple cider or store-bought 1/2 cup brandy 1/4 cup orange juice (or juice from 2 medium oranges) juice from 1 lemon club soda, to taste

If you'd like a cinnamon-sugar rim (highly recommended), simply moisten the rim of your glasses with water, turn the glass upside down and dip it into a mix of cinnamon and sugar. Pour in the sangria with fruit and add a splash of club soda (this unsweetened fizz is wonderful with the sangria!). Garnish with a cinnamon stick, if desired. Cheers!
