FALL

FITNESS TIPS

As we get back into routine it is common to rethink fitness and wellness goals. This Fall get started with some tips that will help you achieve results faster. • Set a big goal along with several smaller goals. The smaller goals should be something you can realistically achieve and that added up will help you reach your longer term or big goal. For example, a goal like “attend 30 minute Circuit class on Wednesday” is a smaller commitment. Going every Wednesday will result in consistency and will help you see results. Setting aside 30 minutes is something most people can do.

• Support your body with a high quality daily vitamin. Make sure that the Vitamin you are using can be “absorbed” by your body. Most grocery store brands are only 5% “absorbable” (meaning the body has a hard time using them); however, there are brands that are 95% absorbable. Spend wisely and get one that works. • Grab a workout buddy and split the cost of a Personal Training session. You will have more fun and feel more motivated and can even catch up with each other during the session.

• If weight loss is a goal keep track of what you eat using a simple food journal. Use a note book or an online version. Then take the log to a Coach for help making changes to your nutrition plan.

• Do something around the house or yard that requires physical activity once a week. You will feel happy finishing a project and will get a bit of exercise in at the same time.

• Make a set of pre-planned workout cards to follow when you exercise.

CENTRE

THE PAST, PRESENT, & FUTURE Written by: Karyn Klaire Koski

L

ike the namesake of Roncesvalles Avenue, the street named Sorauren pays homage to historical Spanish battles fought during the Napoleonic Wars. Such commemorations were dedicated by Colonel Walter O’Hara who fought these wars for the British Army. Irish-born O’Hara immigrated to Ontario’s York because he was gifted land in exchange for his service. In his later years he developed or sold off most of these lands and in doing so, named many streets to honour his origins and family members. Fifty years later, farmlands near present day Sorauren Park were acquired for industry to benefit from nearby cross-country rail line service. A cartage rail or spur originally ran down the middle of Wabash Avenue to transport flax seed to a grain silo. Both silo and rail spur are now just a memory, their absence explains why Wabash Avenue is exceptionally wide. At the turn of the century, Dominion Bridge Steel Company opened up at the corner of Sorauren and Wabash and operated until the Toronto Transit Commission purchased the property in 1947. The site served as a bus park and mechanical repair garage until the 1980s, when a new TTC service garage was acquired elsewhere. When word spread that the grounds were slated to become a garage for municipal garbage trucks – the community rallied to thwart those intentions and fought to establish a much needed neighbourhood park instead. First the TTC garages were torn down. To create the parklands, it was decided that earth was to be built up over the old concrete pad of the transit garage rather than removing the concrete. This budgetary option affects drainage today, but provides open fields for team sports and tennis courts. Sorauren Park opened in 1995 because of an army of dedicated volunteers, City of Toronto advocates and very supportive residents. A major $1-million environmental clean-up in 2004 removed contaminated soil and asbestos from buildings along Wabash Avenue in anticipation of expanding the park to include a community centre and field house. The Wabash Building Society was officially formed in 2006, spearheaded by the Roncesvalles-Macdonell Residents’ Association. The group succeeded in obtaining a City commissioned feasibility study that proved that the old flax mill building could be converted into a community centre. That year, the Wabash Building Society and the City of Toronto accepted a prestigious Brownie Award from the Canadian Urban Institute.

PROFILE

WITH JOËL CAMPBELL WHO ARE YOU?

TELL US A FUN FACT ABOUT YOURSELF:

NAME: Joël Campbell

Being new to the neighbourhood in 2012 and running my own construction company, I was looking for a way to meet new people and potential clients. We considered getting a dog at first, but then I fell into a volunteering role at Sorauren Park to fill in as a coordinator of the Adopt-a-Tree program. Blast forward about four years and I am now very involved and invested in our great little park. As it turns out, getting a dog would have been a lot less work, but I love it and I feed off it. We’re a group of trailblazers at Sorauren Park and I’m honoured to be a part of all the great things we have going on right now.

BIRTHPLACE: Oshawa NICKNAME: Jojo WHERE DO YOU LIVE: Roncesvalles CAREER: Owner of TrueNorth Construction & Laneway Custom Builders.

WHAT WOULD YOU DEEM YOUR GREATEST ACHIEVEMENT? My family.

TELL US ABOUT YOUR FAMILY AND PETS: Most recently, we have a pet caterpillar, which is currently hanging as a chrysalis, that we are all eagerly awaiting to emerge as a butterfly.

10

• COMMUNITYCAPTURED.CA

WHAT DOES THE WORD COMMUNITY MEAN TO YOU? It refers to a group of people with something in common. Whether it’s Market Mondays at Sorauren Park, Baby Time at the High Park Library, or going for a swim down at Sunnyside Pool, we all have a stake in this neighbourhood and the more we give, the more we all will benefit.

WHAT BRINGS YOU THE GREATEST JOY OR SATISFACTION? Spending time with my daughters, Lola and Judith.

WHAT IS THE BEST ADVICE YOU’VE BEEN GIVEN AND BY WHOM? When we were kids, my dad always told my sister and I to “take care of each other.” I think that concept has permeated into many other parts of my life. I really enjoy helping people and making them feel welcome. My dad, Lane Campbell, passed away in 2011 from cancer. We have a bench in the Sorauren Park dedicated to him, where this quote is engraved and is a constant reminder to me and my family to take care of the people we love.

IF YOU COULD POSSESS ONE SUPER-HUMAN POWER, WHAT WOULD IT BE AND WHY? It would be to pinpoint accuracy, because in my line of work, it is of the utmost importance to be accurate!

WHAT IS ONE THING THAT VERY FEW PEOPLE WOULD KNOW ABOUT YOU? Nobody ever knows how to do the 2 dots on the ë in my name. It’s called a tréma. On a smartphone, you long touch the e and select it. On a keyboard, you hold down alt and press 1,3,7.

WHO OR WHAT INSPIRES YOU AND WHY? I’m inspired by kids and all the fun, whacky, and inquisitive things they say.

IF THE WHOLE COMMUNITY WERE LISTENING, WHAT WOULD YOU SAY TO THEM? Come out and volunteer at the park! It’s a lot of fun. There’s many ways you can participate and it’s a great way to meet your neighbours. PS: If you need a new garage built, I’m your guy!

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE MOVIE OF ALL TIME AND WHY? This is such a hard question to answer! But one movie that we definitely need to show for our Sorauren Park Movie Nights is The Goonies. Who doesn’t love that movie? “Hey you guuuuys!”

WHAT MAKES YOU LAUGH? Seinfeld.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE VACATION SPOT? The family cottage up at Lake of Bays.

BRACHYCEPHALIC SYNDROME

Brachycephalic Syndrome is a group of conditions that can make breathing more difficult in short-nosed dogs. The most common breeds affected are Bulldogs, Pugs, Boston Terriers and Pekinese. The Syndrome develops when a disproportion arises between the bones and cartilage in the upper airways compared to the soft tissues. If too much soft tissue is present, it can get in the way of normal airflow from the nostrils or mouth into the trachea or windpipe. The most common components of the condition include stenotic nares (small pinched nostrils), elongated soft palate (overlong soft tissue behind the hard roof of the mouth), everted laryngeal saccules (little sacs in the back of the throat that come out of position and disrupt air flow) and a hypoplastic trachea (more narrow than typical windpipe). Some dogs may only have one or two of the components of the syndrome, where others unfortunately can have all four which can make their symptoms more severe. The abnormalities are present at birth but symptoms can appear early or later in life. Symptoms often become more progressive with time, as increased pressure associated with inhaling against an obstruction can cause further weakening and collapse of these structures. Some animals will become very distressed and unable to breathe if the symptoms are severe. If you have a brachycephalic breed you can take some important steps to prevent an emergency: ONE: Have your pet assessed for this syndrome by your veterinarian. When anesthesia is performed for a spay or a neuter procedure, this is a great opportunity to look at all of these structures and to assess the severity of the condition. There are also several precautions a veterinarian can take when anesthetizing a brachycephalic pet to prevent complications. TWO: Avoid excessive or strenuous exercise or stressful situations that cause rapid breathing as well as prolonged exposure to very warm conditions. THREE: Keep your pet at a healthy weight as obesity can worsen this condition and can make breathing even more difficult. 14

• COMMUNITYCAPTURED.CA

FOUR: Avoid using neck collars to prevent further pressure being put on the airways, and use a harness instead. FIVE: Monitor for any signs of difficulty breathing, an increase in the noisiness of breathing, a change in exercise intolerance, cyanosis (blue appearance of the gums due to lack of oxygen) and syncope (fainting). If your pet is experiencing any of these symptoms they need to be seen by a veterinarian. Brachycephalic syndrome can often be managed with medications, however if the symptoms become severe, corrective surgery can be performed. Surgery often makes a huge difference in the comfort and quality of life of an affected pet.

SMARTPHONE/POINT AND SHOOT/DIGITAL SLR. NO MATTER WHAT DEVICE YOU USE TO TAKE PHOTOS, WHAT LOOKS FINE ON THE DEVICE MAY LEAVE YOU DISAPPOINTED WHEN YOU WANT TO MAKE THAT SPECIAL IMAGE INTO AN ENLARGEMENT, A POSTER OR A SCREEN-SAVER. EACH MONTH, THIS COLUMN WILL AIM TO PROVIDE UNDERSTANDABLE, PRACTICAL, LARGELY NON-TECHNICAL ADVICE TO HELP YOU MAKE BETTER PHOTOS.

GO LOW. GO HIGH.

1

Taking photos while standing is natural, but opportunities for better photos may occur when you change elevation.

2

GO LOW Go Low is especially important to get down to the right level for children and pets, for example. Compare photo 1, taken from a standing height, with photo 2, taken while kneeling down to the subject’s eye level. In some settings, getting below the level of the action, such as when performers are on stage, may produce a powerful perspective, as in photo 3.

3 4

GO HIGH Go High should also be considered, as long as it is safe! Everyday opportunities include balconies (photo 4, with special permission from Koerner Hall), benches, grandstands, ladders, steps and staircases. But always remember that your safety is the priority. Some events provide unique elevations for accredited media (photo 5, Estonian Folkdance Festival from a broadcast tower).
