On December 10th, City of Toronto Fitness Instructor, Maria Jones, held her Annual Aeroabathon at Parkdale’s Masaryk Cowan Community Centre. The event, which also collects Toys and Food for families through Dovercourt Boys & Girls Club, pays homage to Maria’s Daughter, Holly Jones, who was killed in 2003. The annual neighbourhood get together reflects on Holly’s memory, the importance of good health and serves as a way for the family to give back to the community.

Use Gamification Tools and Compete With Friends Use new “fitness gaming” tools as an incentive to make you want to do more work. These systems use monitoring devices to track effort, calories and heart rate. When using MyZone for example, data is uploaded to your phone, the gym’s system and Trainer. MyZone users can compete in challenges with others, simply follow their own progress or use their data to change their workout programs. Their efforts are recognized and rewarded over time, keeping users on track and more interested in their fitness.

MAKING

Get Off The Treadmill Yes, it’s easy to get bored doing the same thing every day, so change it up! If the thought of just doing the Elliptical machine or treadmill for 30 minutes makes you cringe, don’t do it. Grab some kettlebells, bands, a foam roller or TRX and spend your time learning something new.

THE GYM

MORE FUN

Determine What Stops You

Do you ever feel like you should go to the gym but just can’t get yourself motivated? Have you come to the decision that you are not a “gym person?” Sometimes it just comes down to making the gym feel like a more interesting and entertaining place, where you can find things to do that leave you energized, happy and refreshed. Here are some ideas to help you look forward to your workout. Make It Quick Start with understanding the fact that effective exercise is based on quality and not quantity. Short intense workouts can supersede long workouts in building strength and endurance. Just make sure you have a plan and that it contains both strength and cardio moves. If you are moving quickly from one exercise to the next, you won’t have time to think about being bored. On low energy days, it may be okay to do something simple like cardio and even watch your favourite show, just make sure that is not your daily practice.

Many people have little gym experience or have had a dissatisfactory experience around fitness. They may have faced intimidation in a High School Phys-ed class or have never been able to participate in a sport. Not everyone can make a varsity team, but everyone can be fit. If you feel like you need to be in shape, be athletic or be confident before attending a gym, rethink this. A few hours spent learning new workout techniques can change how you feel and reduce your reluctance to workout. Just take the first step and get going. Participate in a Challenge Many gyms offer fitness or weight loss challenges. Look for weekly workshops, group fitness classes, seminars and incentives. Snap Fitness is offering both a 90 Day Fitness Challenge (starting soon) and a Weight Loss Challenge (starting in February). The 90 Day Challenge provides a way to track results, work with a group of people towards common fitness goals, get help and not be alone. Weekly workshops will include topics such as grocery shopping for healthier food, foam rolling, using kettlebells, using battle ropes and using restorative fitness practices. torontohighpark@snapfitness.com

PROFILE

WITH PEGGY NASH WHO ARE YOU?

TELL US ABOUT YOUR FAMILY AND PETS:

NAME: Peggy Nash

At one time we had a rabbit, three cats, a dog and a toad. Sadly right now we have none, but sometimes we doggy-sit our son’s boxer.

BIRTHPLACE: Toronto WHERE DO YOU LIVE: High Park CAREER: Labour Negotiator, Community & Political Activist, Former Member of Parliament & Educator

WHAT WOULD YOU DEEM YOUR GREATEST ACHIEVEMENTS? My greatest achievements are raising three sons, developing women’s leadership programs for the labour movement and representing my community in Parliament

WHAT GIVES YOU THE GREATEST JOY OR SATISFACTION? My family. We now have two grandchildren and they are a real delight. My three-year-old grandson taught me some jumps on the trampoline. It’s awesome!

• COMMUNITYCAPTURED.CA

WHAT DOES THE WORD COMMUNITY MEAN TO YOU? Community means that we are greater than the sum of individuals. Together we create a better society.

WHAT IS ONE THING THAT VERY FEW PEOPLE WOULD KNOW ABOUT YOU? I love blueberries. I like to eat them fresh in the summer and frozen in the winter. I just love them!

WHAT MAKES YOU LAUGH? The Capybara in High Park. They are adorable giant rodents.

WHAT IS THE BEST ADVICE YOU’VE BEEN GIVEN AND BY WHOM? My parents taught me to be honest, to stand up for what’s right and to always be able to financially support myself. It was some pretty solid advice.

IF YOU COULD POSSESS ONE SUPER-HUMAN POWER, WHAT WOULD IT BE AND WHY? So many people live in economic desperation, right in our own city, but also certainly in many other countries. This represents a failure of governance. If there was a super power to suddenly help people economically, I’d choose that. Imagine the joy and good karma!

WHO INSPIRES YOU AND WHY? What inspires me are regular people without much power, who, when faced with a crisis they didn’t expect, show exceptional courage. We see this with people who selflessly save others in a crisis. However, we also see it with people who go on strike, at great personal cost, to stand up for their rights. We see this with low-income single parents who make exceptional efforts to help their kids get a better life. There’s a lot of quietly inspiring people who are just struggling to get by.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE VACATION SPOT? This past summer my husband and I visited Newfoundland and Labrador. We explored national parks and historic sites. It is a beautiful province with an exciting history.

IF THE WHOLE COMMUNITY WERE LISTENING, WHAT WOULD YOU SAY TO THEM? Let’s work to make our city affordable. We need co-op housing, rental housing and affordable home ownership, that can keep families in the core of the city. We need affordable and efficient public transit. If we value diversity and a cohesive society, we need to pay the taxes that help build the kind of city we all need to succeed.

WHAT IS YOUR ALL TIME FAVOURITE MOVIE AND WHY? Tough question; I have a few. I guess Casablanca always stands out for me. It’s a great love story caught up in the web of international politics and intrigue. It was shot on a Hollywood set, but it is how most Westerners think of Morocco. It is both comically cynical and intensely hopeful at the same time. Bogart’s character, Rick is just a joy.

JOYOUS CHRISTMAS

PROGRAMS

@ COPERNICUS LODGE Recent events at Copernicus Lodge certainly brought joy to many seniors. Be a Santa to a Senior program provides gifts to more than 1,000 seniors throughout the GTA. All of the 228 long-term care residents at Copernicus Lodge received a Christmas gift this year, which was made possible by this wonderful initiative and all of the very generous corporate sponsors. In December, the students and teachers of Bishop Marrocco/Thomas Merton Catholic School came to Copernicus Lodge to share a little Christmas cheer with residents through music and caroling.
