HOME SHOW Written by: Leslie Styles
Home decorating buffs and renovators gathered at the Burlington Home Show in Mainway Arena September 15th – 17th, to seek information from home and lifestyle experts. Dozens and dozens of vendors were on hand with advice regarding renovation, landscape and decorating projects. Also featured were “Bird of Prey” demonstrations by the Raptor Conservancy. Between show times, Shauna Cowan introduced the ‘Harris Hawk’ from the southern USA, similar to the more familiar ‘Red Tail Hawk’ of Canada. Chad Cieslick, who recently completed a 1000 km walk for charity, sold ‘butterflies of hope’ with all proceeds donated to the Alzheimer’s Society. The Burlington Spring and Fall Home Shows provide great informative opportunities for vendors and home owners alike.

APPLEFEST Written by: Leslie Styles
Crowds gathered on September 17th to celebrate harvest at the Ireland House Museum’s annual Applefest. Numerous activities included main stage entertainment, pony rides, face painting and many vendors – something for the whole family. The past came to life with tours of the Georgian-styled home, built 1837, one of Burlington’s oldest. The city purchased and restored the property in 1985 from a descendant of the original family.

t is natural to pay attention to the subject(s) of your photo, but a distracting background can leave a less than desirable impression. Not all background distractions are avoidable, especially in fast-moving situations over which the photographer has no control, such as a Canada Day parade (photo 1). However, the photographer does have control when the subject is cooperative. Photo 2 shows a volunteer model who is unaware that she is standing in front of a pole. Asking the model to move to her right by two steps provides a less distracting background (photo 3). Some subjects cannot realistically be asked to move (photo 4). In these situations, the photographer may be able to change the background, as seen in photo 5, in which “going low” provides a less cluttered background.

For 3 days, the only women’s shelter in the Region, hosts Hope in High Heels – a men’s only walk in heels that shows how men and boys can be a part of the solution in ending violence against women. The event started in Burlington seven years ago and then grew to Oakville in 2011 and Milton last year! This year, approximately 150 men and boys walked in all three events. Halton Women’s Place hopes to raise $150,000 this year from all three events.
