REUPHOLSTERIN the right way
ith things not being made like they used to, and people wanting to avoid the need for landfills; reupholstering furniture has become a more popular option. For this frugal decision, there’s a bonus: you end up with a truly unique piece that is exactly your style and of a fantastic quality. Of course, when investing in anything, you should do your due diligence to ensure you’re on the right path. So we’re going to share three professional tips for reupholstering your furniture the right way.
Start with good quality Reupholstering is not an inexpensive option, but it’s worth the investment if your furniture is of good quality. A great way to find out is to have a seat – If it feels good and the springs aren’t sagging or squeaking, then you’re off to a great start. Keep in mind – the springs, foam, and joints can always be repaired, but know that if your piece needs a lot of repairs, the cost will go up. It’s always a great idea to invest in a quality piece, because at some point, it might make more sense to purchase a new custom piece of higher quality.

Get the right fabric One of the best parts about reupholstering an existing piece is that you get to select any fabric your heart desires, but it’s important to work with a professional to ensure you’re getting the right fabric. It’s not just about selecting the right colour - durability is a key factor as well.
Most people think that we start by selecting a pretty fabric at Switch Studio, since we're so design focused. But we actually start by asking a lot of questions about how you live in the space. Reupholstering is an investment, so we want to be sure that your investment lasts for many years to come. After we determine your durability needs, we work with you to select the most perfect-looking fabric for your space. NG Make it your own There are many things we can do at Switch Studio to make a piece uniquely yours, so we really like to ensure we know what our clients are after. We can change the look of a piece by adding, subtracting or tweaking any of the following – Fabric combinations, skirts, cushions, nail heads, piping, arms, legs and more. There really are so many different ways to customize. Another special thing we often do for people with kids and pets is make a blanket for the seat in the same fabric – This is a great way to protect the seat from claws and kid spills, while still looking great as it blends in with the piece. It’s paying attention to the details that really help make a piece special and uniquely yours.

very year, when the leaves change colour, the air gets colder and the layers get heavier, I crave a specific warm dessert that signifies all the cozy feelings this changing season brings. Unfortunately, in usual hibernation-fashion, cozy usually means carb-y. This crisp truly showcases the sweet, warm flavours fall has to offer, but without all the usual guilt. I use an assortment of apples to achieve an array of flavours and textures, and a mixture of oats and nuts to achieve a healthier crisp.
Directions Step ONE: Preheat the oven to 375°F. Step TWO: FOR THE APPLES: Peel the apples and using a paring knife, slice the apples right off the core in thin uneven pieces. (I am not a fan of coring the apples and then slicing them into wedges on a cutting board. I find the apples do not cook as well. I prefer thin slicing them right off the core and leaving the core behind.) Step THREE: In a large mixing bowl, toss the apples with the lemon juice. Sprinkle with the cornstarch or arrowroot, sugar, cinnamon and salt, toss. Place apple mixture in a medium size shallow baking dish, about 2-quart (smaller than a lasagna dish), about 10” x 8-9” x 8”, or even smaller. Step FOUR: FOR THE CRISP TOPPING: In a medium size mixing bowl, mix together the oats,
almond flour, toasted pecans, sugar, cinnamon and salt. Using your fingers, mix in the butter or coconut oil, massaging it into the dry mixture. Scatter this mixture on top of the apples in the baking dish. Step FIVE: Bake for 60-75 mins or until the apples are bubbling and the topping is golden. Step SIX: Serve warm in individual bowls, dolloped with Greek yogurt, sprinkled with cinnamon and a drizzle of honey.
Ingredients For the Apples 5 Apples* 1 tbsp Lemon Juice 1 1/2 tbsp Cornstarch or Arrowroot Powder 1 1/2 tbsp Coconut Sugar or Cane Sugar 1 tsp Ground Cinnamon Pinch of Sea Salt For the Crisp Topping 1 cup/100g Rolled Oats (I like large flake or old fashioned) 1/2 cup/45g Almond Flour 1/2 cup/60g chopped Pecans, toasted** 1/4 cup/40g Coconut Sugar or Cane Sugar 1/2 tsp Cinnamon 1/4 tsp Sea Salt
* I use 2 Granny Smith, 1 Honey Crisp, 1 Pink Lady and 1 Spartan. Be sure to use 2 Granny Smith and do not use Macintosh. ** I place the whole pecans in a zip lock bag and smash them with the back of a fry pan, then place them in a dry fry pan and cook them on low heat until they are fragrant and toasted. This takes about 10 mins.
