Today, many homeowners are looking to creating a contemporary style kitchen with streamlined surfaces and well-honed finishes. Appliance garages are also a great way to store small, yet bulky, appliances like mixers, blenders and food processors. Tucked away, they remain accessible, yet out of sight. Be sure to finish interior cabinets by adding multiple electrical outlets prior to final cabinet installation.


Popular butler’s pantries are another great way to add storage, particularly when it extends out of the kitchen and into the hallway. This extra space is ideal for storing additional appliances, drinking glasses and bar stock. Consider tall pantry towers with shelves, pullout baskets and shallow drawers within your kitchen renovation plans.

Flipping through the pages of design and decor magazines is a great source of inspiration for many of us. The featured rooms are usually big and bright, with tons of natural light and an airy feel. Some of the appeal comes via wonderful architecture, high ceilings and large-scale windows. The rest comes from strategic planning and a sleek designers touch. We here at Fine Finishes Design Inc. are often asked to create a sense of more space in our clients’ homes. Here are some of our tried and true tricks and tips to making a home feel larger, brighter and more open. Probably the simplest shortcut to a bigger and brighter home is to de-clutter. Granted, this won’t actually get you more square footage, but you’ll be amazed at your newfound perceived sense of space. A great start is to remove items usually kept on your tabletops and countertops. Also, minimally adorned shelves will help to accentuate your home’s architecture, furniture and artwork. These flat surfaces seem to beg for more but if you want to achieve a visual sense of space, these de-cluttering tips work every time.


LIGHTER COLOURS CAN MAKE YOUR WALLS VISUALLY RECEDE, WHILE DEEPER COLOURS TEND TO COME FORWARD TO CREATE COZINESS.

Wall colour is another useful way to create the illusion of more overall space. To bring a sense of light and air to your home, choose a neutral colour palette of white, beige or light grey. Paint the room and all adjoining areas in the same hue to create continuity and blur the boundaries between different living areas. Another rule to follow is to keep contrast to minimum and have an overall monochromatic colour palette from the ground up for an overall cohesive and seamless look. Speaking of walls, have you taken stock of your windows yet? Another helpful tip to make your home look and feel larger is to maximize its natural light. Replace your heavy drapes with simple white sheers, which offer the benefit of privacy without impeding the flow of sunlight. If privacy is not an issue, omit the window coverings altogether for a modern, minimal look. A great tip from ‘Specialty House Manufacturing’ is to hang your window coverings as close to the ceiling as possible to give further visual allusion of larger windows. ▹

When you’re finally ready for furniture, choosing the right scale is key. A small home that’s outfitted with sleek, streamlined furniture will not only look more spacious, but will be more functional as well. Look for furniture that has clean lines, clear glass and reflective materials, which hold less visual weight than solid woods. As you arrange your furniture, steer clear of doorways, traffic patterns and sight lines to ensure you maintain that great sense of openness. The most beautiful homes aren’t necessarily the biggest ones. Square footage is just a number. The more important thing is how you use it. A Classic ITALIAN PASTA DISH FOR THE HOLIDAYS ENJOY

THE CLASSIC COMBINATION OF SPINACH AND RICOTTA IN THIS DELICATE RAVIOLI, filled with three types of organic cheese and real cream. To really allow the pasta to shine, it’s best served with a light sauce or, in this case, a simple sauté of juicy tomato and leafy greens. “Hold your block of Parmesan by the rind and use a vegetable peeler to shave the cheese into thin strips,” suggests Michelle Pennock, executive chef for the PC Test Kitchen.

WITH SAUTÉED GREENS Prep time: 10 mins | Cook time: 5 mins | Serves: 2

INGREDIENTS • 1 pkg (300 g) frozen PC Organics spinach and ricotta ravioli filled egg pasta • 3 tbsp (45 mL) olive oil • 2 cloves garlic, minced • 1 pkg (142 g) organic kale, chard, spinach salad mix • 1 Roma tomato, diced • 1/4 tsp (1 mL) black pepper • 2 tbsp (30 mL) chopped fresh Italian parsley • 1/4 cup (60 mL) shaved Parmesan cheese

DIRECTIONS STEP ONE: Bring 8 cups (2 L) lightly salted water to a boil in large saucepan. Gently add pasta; cook, stirring occasionally and reducing heat to maintain a gentle boil, until tender but firm; 3 to 4 minutes. Drain. STEP T WO: Meanwhile, heat oil in large nonstick skillet over medium heat; cook garlic, stirring, until fragrant, about 30 seconds. Add salad mix; cook, stirring, until wilted, about 1 minute. Add tomato and pepper; cook, stirring, until heated through, about 1 minute. STEP THREE: Add pasta and 1 tbsp parsley to skillet; toss to combine. Divide among serving plates. FOR YOUR BATHROOM Behind every great bathroom, is an even greater bathtub. The tub is the showpiece of the room, and for good reason. The room is named after this fabulous fixture, after all. As a designer, I am asked to assist design many bathrooms and I know the bathtub can make or break a bathroom design, so I encourage clients to give it the consideration it deserves - not to mention a little extra budget, if possible. When shopping for a new bathtub, style and comfort are equally important. In other words, great bathrooms can’t compromise on either. Some sleek, sculptural soaker tubs border on art, and come in a seemingly endless array of shapes, sizes, finishes and materials. Once you identify a look that you love, be sure to sit back (literally!) and give some thought to the tub’s shape and size, and how these suit your shape and size. Sit inside it, and get a good feel for the tub’s curves, height and interior angles. For this reason, I recommend buying a new bathtub in person, versus online.

Look for vanities boasting distinctive features, be it a unique washbasin, a splashy faucet or a striking base, to give your bathroom a fashionable yet functional edge.

Of course, function also plays an important role when selecting the right bathroom vanity. Is this an ensuite for two, a private bathroom or a powder room? Will you’ll be using this area for grooming or to apply makeup? Some other things to take into account include: door swing, traffic flow, plumbing, and location of other fixtures, like the toilet and tub. These will affect the vanity styles and specs best suited to you. When browsing bathtubs and vanities, shop with both in mind. Remember that the most impactful statements are made by unified styles. You don’t necessarily have to select matching fixtures, or even pieces from the same brand.
