A Victorian Christmas The Victorians started, or at least made popular, many of the Christmas traditions we practice today. Prince Albert, Queen Victoria’s husband, contributed to the shaping of how Christmas was celebrated by British Victorian families. Albert was born in Germany where evergreen trees were traditionally brought into the home at Christmas and decorated with candles, sweets, and fruit. In 1848, the royal family was pictured celebrating Christmas around a decorated evergreen tree and the fashion spread very quickly. At the beginning of the Victorian period, families gave and received presents to celebrate the New Year. However, as the importance of Christmas grew as a family celebration, the gift-giving was moved to Christmas. The Victorian Christmas dinner was very important to the Victorians. They looked upon Christmas as a time to focus on family relationships. Some families celebrated with roast goose or beef, but it was in Victorian times that roast turkey became the main part of the Christmas dinner. The tradition of roasting a turkey for Christmas continues today. We invite you to step back in time and attend the Thomasville, Georgia Victorian Christmas Festival set for Thursday, December 12th and Friday, December 13th, from 6:00 until 9:00 PM. Nightly features include carriage rides ($5.00 per person); train rides for children; performances in the Thomasville Municipal Auditorium; visits with St. Nick at The Ritz Amphitheater; marshmallow and chestnut toasting; plein air artists; street performers; and delicious food vendors of all types.
