PHILOSOPHY & PROCESS My process is strongly dependent upon thorough research and an ever growing understanding of people and our brains. I use this information to develop a concept that will drive experiences, always considering people. I believe that through thoroughly understanding a problem, need or desire, is the only path to designing an effective solution. By thoroughly understanding design principals, technology, fabrication, and design history, we are able to develop our understanding of needs, problems or desires and create the best space. Continuing educate myself and others throughout this process is the key to our industry continuing to create space that goes beyond just solving problems.

REAR APPROACH | RSA

M Y PA RT Using 3DS Max I presented full booth renderings that had been edited through photoshop to include lighting elements. Some components I built in sketch-up.

Final construction documents (sent to our engineers and fabrication) team were built in ACAD. During this project I collaborated with a small group of designers, and had the opportunity to face large budget restraints, vendor communication, and prepare client presentations.


05 IBM at RSA SECURITY EXPERIENCE DESIGN At the RSA security event, we were tasked with designing a space with a full understanding of IBM’s new brand guidelines and assets, while also high lighting new IBM Security features through a concept of connectivity. Their new branding approach included a metaphor centered around “the aurora”, or northern lights. In order to highlight this metaphor and connection, we determined a concept of layering. Experientially this meant guiding users from one experience to the next in a clear route. The physical representation was most strongly enforced through mesh panels that were back lit, and motorized. Each panel was a specific pantone swatch pulled from IBM’s “aurora”, and motorized to move as the lights may truly move throughout the northern sky.

INTERACTIVE DEMO STATIONS

CONNECTION WALL

PROCESS We initially presented two concepts to our client, each revolving around their concept of connection, their new interactive demos (the security pillars), and their request for a net-new connection wall. After determining that the physical representation of the aurora would be the primary design element, we went on to clad our existing bench counters with black acrylic and designed new edge lit acrylic to act as dividers between each demo station. The connection wall doubled as a large closet that the client would require in order to store the power systems to operate the many demos. We also included a theater area for presentations, and a connection bar where attendees could have longer chats with product specialists about their needs.

M Y PA RT As a tribute to the IBM 8 bar, there are a total of 8 light bars that act as the primary light source for this booth. They were designed to fit

within the 16’ H cantelievered metal frame, with interior illuminated panels aiding in keeping the entire space illuminated.

The frame also helped in defining the space and provided IBM with simple, clean IBM branding space.

The lighting in this design was essential, as a poorly illuminated or dark space would’ve been counter active to the openness we hoped to achieve.


09 IBM at SHOPTALK EXPERIENCE DESIGN For this trade show we were to highlight 3 interactive demos that pertained to different retail experiences that IBM technologies and software could aid costumers with. Each demo included certain props that we decided to keep all white, in support of an open concept. The physical demo station, which included a keyboard and large monitor, was also white in coordination with it’s props. We brought in IBM’s gradient to add the pops of color and to help to identify IBM from a distance. This was applied to glass panels, so that a level of transparency remained in order to continually support an open space.

11 NEXT COMPETITION CORPORATE INTERIOR The Steelcase next competition asks students to design the future of the office space. This year the office space was that of an architecture firm in LA. They asked that cross generational mentoring, wellness, productivity and retention of millenials be considered when designing the space. Focusing on these goals along with the culture of LA I was able to generate a concept of Neighborhoods. LA achieves a sense of belonging & fulfillment within its residents by celebrating different cultures, history and personalities. Rather than creating a uniform atmosphere throughout the space, I want to bring that celebration of uniqueness, culture and personality within, using formal elements inspired by the LA freeway system.

PROCESS After analyzing the program and client goals, they were categorized into three categories. Engage: spaces where people would not only interact with each other but with their tools and environment. Collab: Spaces that are dedicated to collaboration both public and private. Create: the spaces where the firm can physically create or ideate, primarily individually. On the first level three neighborhoods were created, each had adjacencies to private spaces, conference rooms and open collaboration spaces. Each maintains a unique characteristic representative of the pride associated with LA suburbs. They are also double height, giving the second level collab spaces unique views. Steelcase buoys and standing height tables are placed along circulation, encouraging employees to casually engage throughout the day.

NEXT CORPORATE INTERIOR In order to fit the programmatic requirements a mezzanine was added to most of the space. The second level housed a large training room and a work lounge for remote workers or casual meetings. The second level became a formal representation of LA culture and neighborhoods through it’s connectivity and sinuous curves.

The large stadium connects the cafe and the training room on the second level. On the east side of the space the material library’s ceiling mirrors the stair and extends upward giving employees on the second level a unique perspective into the library and those using the room a dynamic overhead plane. FURNITURE DESIGN Fidget: accommodating both creation and movement: the bottom of the l. wob[bowl] seat is spherical and includes a base piece that can either elevate the seat or serve as a low table that can be used as a work surface. Inspire: this piece is centered around the concept of meditation where nature, imperfection are honored. The organic form of the seat in addition to a pure color works with the naturalness of the wood to promote clarity & peacefulness. In addition this provides opportunities for a variety of seating positions for ultimate focus & comfort.

DETAILS

(L) WOB. BOWL. FURNITURE DESIGN This piece was designed as a response to people’s desire to fidget as they sit. Inspired by meditative positions, the form was built in rhino, then sliced at every 3/4” and CNC’d out of MDF. In order to index the pieces there are a series of holes and dowels that are glued together. The MDF is coated with a gallon of automotive primer and coated with a white automotive gloss finish. The base is a cnc’d semi-sphere made of birch wood, with a walnut stain. This was in order to contrast the bright white finish of the seat.

The challenge was to design a relaxing space within our campus. We took a master planing approach, as the transitions between class and high school/college or college/ adulthood are often times the most stressful. By doing this we were able to create a series of experiences that encompass what it’s like to be apart of the KSU family, while providing respite for all visitors, students and faculty. Though we incorporated benching and a gentle stream along each path throughout the campus, we focused on 4 main areas as specific restorative areas. 1. Bosco plaza acts as the entrance and as it is high in transition it is left open in circulation. An overhead sun shading plane is incorporated along with an orb creating a ripple effect in the center fountain that is then carried throughout campus. 2. The mounds, a get away for collaboration or individual work/relaxation. They are occupied and provide a variety of seating, surfaces and enclosure. 3. The quad. Another major transition point, natural seating elements were included to encourage students and staff to slow down and engage. Lastly, Anderson lawn was readjusted as it provides for large gatherings or performances, we turned the space into a unique amphitheater that when not in use formally can be informally used to hang out with your KSU family.

25 BUBBLE MACHINE COMMUNITY OUTREACH The bubble machine was designed for “Wonder Workshop” a facility that works toward educating children through play. This experience had us dealing with a real timeline, a real budget and real client requests. The goal was that this machine would be able to enclose a child in a bubble. Using a CNC to put a ripple pattern into the base, and a thermo-former to create a removable moat for the “extra strength” bubble solution we were able to create this. After digitally modeling the machine in Rhino, and CNCing the pieces we fabricated the machine using the resources provided in our shop. We created a pull system attached to a hula hoop that when pulled downwards builds a bubble up and around one’s body. The base was painted with the companies logo and with vibrant colors as to further engage the users. The machine was installed in May 2016 and has been functioning since.


27 STUDY ABROAD SKETCHING This summer I had the opportunity to study abroad in Florence Italy through the school of Lorenzo Di Medici. There I took a graphic design and sketchbook class where we traveled to sketch views of Florence. In my spare time and on weekends I traveled as much as possible and photographed every sight I could.

This project will explore how water and architecture can impact human happiness, connections, and wellness. I propose that through renovating an iconic community space as an aquatic center a community can begin to heal, grow, and promote happiness in an urban environment.

research “blue minds” Blue mind is a concept developed by Wallace J. Nichols. Nichols conducts experiments to interpret the connections between neuroscience, happiness, and water. His data is a culmination of self reported experiences: how people feel around water and the effects they notice, studies of cognitive effects of water and nature with a deeper analysis of human responses to the color blue along with aquatics, and a look neuroscience, microbiology, microchemistry and human’s cognitive responses/ connections to water. His findings have enforced the concept that as humans we desire a connection to water and that by providing this connection we can begin to provide a source of relaxation, happiness, and mindfulness. Nichols published a book titled: “Blue Mind: The Surprising Science That Shows How Being Near, In, On, or Under Water Can Make You Happier, Healthier, More Connected, and Better at What You Do” in 2014 and has largely influenced the direction and research of this hypothesis.

The design of the building was inspired by Victor Gruen, who had designed many malls before this. He had big hopes of creating cultural and inviting spaces where communities could come together. His idea was to then make large shopping centers with dining experiences where communities could spend their days together.

Currently four buildings remain, all of which used to be anchor stores thus they have pronounced entries and connections to an interior courtyard. Adjacencies to major roads, residential areas, dining, and retail spaces are noted. These should influence programmatic adjacencies.

Considering we experience joy from both being active and relaxing, I began to think about the unpredictability of aquatic interactions. What if instead of seemingly random reaction, this “splash back� sensation was defined. If we could apply a regulatory system or a predictable elemnt to a splash, drop or wave, comfort would feel more natural. The parti above was developed while exploring the combination of defined regulating lines and the flow of a splash and drops of water.

The primary goal of this project was to define a series of spaces that would EXPERIENCE 9 help to improve holistic wellness, while EXPERIENCE 9 EXPERIENCE 8 accommodating EXPERIENCE 8 for a variety of users (both culturally and comfort with water). After defining the 10 step process, and detailing the experiences I began to look at how those experiences between introduction, relaxation & adventure would relate to each other. Here I began to understand the supplemental requirements of the spaces. For example, some of the zones would require some sort of supervision or cue space, or day light. parti + plan On the spectrum of entertainment there seem to be two ends, thrill seekers & those desiring to relax. In conjunction with this, it must be noted that a majority of the US is uncomfortable swimming, or nonconfident in their skill. My solution was to provide a series of ten experiences for each comfort level and in three categories. There is an introductory experience for thrill seekers and introductory experiences for those wishing to relax. These two series of events line the exterior sides of the building, while the center of the space remains the hub for those simply looking to slowly acquaint themselves to water.

Throughout this wide array of experiences, each remains united through a winding corridor, acting as a path of exposure to each increasingly more engaging element. The purpose of this exposure is to provide the first step of gaining comfort with a new experience through visual cues. By normalizing these experiences, it is hoped that one will become more comfortable and eventually willing to engage additional senses. However, understanding that a large portion, 40% of guests, will also be comfortable with a certain degree of exposure, I’ve included two direct corridors that allow for direct and seamless transitions between the series of experiences.

INVOLVEMENT IAPD Open House 2016 Leader Directed and organized a group of 27 students as well as a series of 3 spaces to display projects from over 100 students. I coordinated the use of technologies and finances, and peers/professors.

Gamma Phi Beta Sorority Homecoming Float Chair: Organizing the creation of a mobile designed environment with over 200 members as well as designing the environment & directing construction of primary elements. (2 years)

AIAS Community Outreach Designed and constructed a large scale “bubble machine”, in which a child can create a bubble around themselves for “Wonder Workshop”.

IAPD Annual Awards Designed and helped fabricate personal awards for 30 members as well as coordination of the event. (4 years)
