Seedling Success - Top tips from a flower farmer

Let's start by saying that nothing is for sure, but given the right conditions seeds will grow. It’s very easy to get it wrong with watering, temperature and pests but it’s the cheapest way to fill a garden and will give you many blooms which are not commercially available in the garden centres. Seedling success is easy when you know how

I start most of my seeds indoors or in my greenhouse at home as they need to be checked on daily and watered regularly. Some can be sowed direct into the ground but I do find that by planting out sizeable plants that they are much more able to withstand pests and diseases and of course the weather.

Top 5 seed sowing tips

1 DONT SOW TOO EARLY

It’s very easy to get carried away and sow lots of seeds too early, especially if you have a greenhouse but even if they do grow well at first you will have nowhere to transplant them as it will be too cold outside.

2 COMPOST

Moisten your compost first to allow greater absorption of watering later on If you water onto a dry mix you will find that your seeds can easily get washed to the sides of the pot. Just a small sprinkling of water is enough, mix the compost thoroughly and then fill your pots

3. SOW THINLY

Don’t sow seedling too thickly as this will just lead to disease and the seeds will have too much competition to grow strongly. Better to sow as thinly as you can so the roots have plenty of room to grow This will also make pricking our easier as the roots will not be so much of a tangled mess

4. INSTRUCTIONS

Check your seed packets There are vital tips on there for each type of seed and the conditins they require fr germinatin.

5 CONDITIONS

If you can use a heated mat and cloche covers to keep in the moisture It’s amazing how much quicker they will germinate Remove each pot as it germinates and grow on in slightly cooler conditions.

Unlocking the Secrets of Seed Stratification - Top tips from a flower farmer

Have you ever wondered about the mysterious process that some seeds require before they can germinate successfully? Look no further than seed stratification

Seed stratification is a controlled process of simulating the conditions that seeds would experience in nature to break dormancy and begin germination. This technique recreates the natural environmental factors essential for seed viability, such as temperature fluctuations, moisture levels, and light exposure. By imitating these conditions, seed stratification helps to initiate the germination process, preparing the seeds for optimal growth once planted in soil.

Cold Stratification

This is used to improve the germination rates of certain seeds that require exposure to cold temperatures to break their dormancy. Seeds are typically placed in a refrigerator or cold room for a specific period, usually several weeks to several months.

Discover our online growing guides for more sowing hints & tips

This process helps simulate the natural winter conditions that these seeds would experience in their native habitats, triggering biochemical changes that prepare them for germination when planted in warmer conditions. The simplest and easiest way to cold stratify seeds into sow them into compost and leave outdoors over winter. In most of the UK this is a very reliable method to use.

Some seeds may need several periods of cold stratification and overwintering will usually do this as temperatures naturally fluctuate Otherwise placing them in and out of the fridge/ Freezer will also work For some seeds these fluctuating temperatures are essentail to brear their dormancy

Scarification

Seed scarification is a technique used to improve germination rates by physically breaking or weakening the seed coat, which may be hard or impermeable This process involves nicking, scratching, or lightly sanding the seed coat to create small openings or abrasions, allowing water to penetrate more easily

Bag seed starting

Sowing seeds in a bag with tissue is a simple and effective method to facilitate germination, especially for seeds that require a moist environment to sprout This technique involves placing seeds between layers of moist tissue inside a sealed plastic bag The tissue provides a consistent level of moisture to the seeds while also allowing air circulation The sealed environment helps maintain humidity, creating optimal conditions for germination
