First of all a big thank you to all our customers! 2017 was a record breaking year for us in terms of the numbers of you that we welcomed to our ever increasing number of events. We were able to not only open our main doors here in the theatre, but we’ve been upping the stakes in our “Satellite Stages” programme where we have been visiting local community centres, village halls and institutes, bringing you professional, high class performances right on your doorsteps. It’s worthwhile noting that audience spending makes a significant impact to our local economy. By attracting people into our area where they might eat out, spend money on transport and shop locally, we are helping to sustain jobs, generate additional economic activity and act as a positive force not just for social regeneration but for economic regeneration too! The majority of our suppliers are local, and we’re proud to be supporting our local high quality producers. Many of you have been commenting on the lamentable state of our fly tower cladding. We have been working with Powys County Council towards a solution, and I’m very pleased to say that we now have an agreement to get it fixed! This work should take place early this year and although it is largely cosmetic, we’re delighted that some money has been made available to make us look presentable again. Other moves that we hope to instigate in 2018 include the launch of a membership scheme for our loyal customers. It is with sadness that we announce the retirement of our Technical Manager Peter Whitehead who has been here for 25 years and 20 in his current role. We would like to wish him a long and happy retirement. We all look forward to seeing you again in 2018.

Filled with breath-taking arias including Tatyana’s great letter scene, a tour de force of the soprano repertoire, the poignant tale contrasts the simplicity of country life with the sophisticated excesses of Russia’s pre-revolutionary court and tells of the fated love between the innocent Tatyana and the world-weary cynic Onegin. A fabulous cast includes rising new stars and internationally recognised performers. Woman of Flowers by/gan SIÔN EIRIAN | after/gan ddilyn SAUNDERS LEWIS

Blodeuwedd isn’t like other women. Conjured from wild flowers by the wizard Gwydion to be the perfect wife for the warrior prince Llew, nature’s wild waves surge in her blood and when the dark desires woven into her nature are awakened the consequences are bloody for all around her. Theatr Pena return with the Company’s first co-production with Taliesin Arts Centre, a dynamic and visually rich production of a very ancient tale of betrayal and retribution. Woman of Flowers is a strikingly poetic reimagining of the Mabinogi myth of Blodeuwedd by award-winning Welsh writer Siôn Eirian in which he skilfully combines Saunders Lewis’s Welsh language verse drama of the same name with original material to create a captivating dark fantasy. Un o straeon y Mabinogi yw Blodeuwedd sydd wedi cael ei drawsnewid gan Sian Eirian.

INTO THE ARK DANE LLOYD & TAYLOR JONES

After starting out busking in Cardiff, Into The Ark duo Dane Lloyd and Taylor Jones, decided to build their reputation by hitting the road in the time-honoured tradition. They acquired an old van and toured the UK doing whatever gigs they could land, regardless of the town or the venue. Two years and over 200 shows later, their approach has been vindicated as they’ve developed into a live band that are able to rise to any occasion. Following a summer of touring across UK and Europe which included Latitude Festival and The Great Escape, plus an invite from their friend and mentor Sir Tom Jones to support him on his UK tour, Into The Ark have cemented themselves as one of the fast-rising acts to watch. This year they will embark upon their debut US tour as guests of Sir Tom Jones in May / June 2018. The duo have consistently demonstrated their ability to win over new fans following other impressive support slots with Paolo Nutini, Olly Murs, Model Aeroplanes and Gabrielle Aplin. “A TALE OF FRIENDSHIP, LOVE AND SACRIFICE SET AGAINST THE BACKDROP OF A WORLD IN FLAMES...” WRITTEN BY OWEN THOMAS DIRECTED BY PETER DORAN

BASED ON AN IDEA BY IFAN HUW DAFYDD

From Owen Thomas, writer of the award winning ‘Grav’, comes a brand-new play written to commemorate the centenary of the end of World War I. Inspired by a true story. It is July 1916, and as the Battle of the Somme rages, Mametz Wood echoes to the sounds of war as the 38th Welsh Division face the ferocity of the German army... Dan and Billy, two young soldiers, forge a friendship in the heat of the build-up to the infamous battle. When Billy is killed in Mametz Wood, he leaves behind a devastated friend and, back home, a heart-broken and pregnant wife. Altered by his experiences on the Western Front, Dan returns home to step into his friend’s shoes, ultimately marrying Billy’s widow and raising their baby son as his own. Fifty years later, in a clearing in the wood, Dan has returned to lay a ghost to rest. The production will be directed by our Award Winning Artistic Director, Peter Doran (Best Director, Wales Theatre Awards 2017). Mae’n Orffennaf 1916, ac wrth i Frwydr Somme gynddeiriogi, mae Coedwig Mametz Wood yn adleisio synau’r rhyfel wrth i’r 38fed Adran Gymreig wynebu ffyrnigrwydd y fyddin Almaeneg... Gordon, THE BIG SICK tells the story of Pakistan-born aspiring comedian Kumail (Nanjiani), who connects with grad student Emily (Kazan) after one of his standup sets. However, what they thought would be just a one-night stand blossoms into the real thing, which complicates the life that is expected of Kumail by his traditional Muslim parents. When Emily is beset with a mystery illness, it forces Kumail to navigate the medical crisis with her parents, Beth and Terry (Holly Hunter and Ray Romano) who he’s never met, while dealing with the emotional tug-ofwar between his family and his heart. 2h | Comedy / Drama / Romance (2017)

BETH PRIOR

2016 saw Beth raise over £7k in a month to produce her debut studio album, record it, market it AND tour it across the UK with her 7-piece Collective and although she appears laid bare for this event and with just a guitar, she is no less spirited. “Beth Prior is a law unto herself. Her songs are carefully structured, and she has clearly studied songwriting a great deal. But she disguises the meticulous construction so well behind her rough and tumble indie aesthetic and stage presence that is never pretentious or boring. She is both impulsive enough to carry a show in a dingy Cellar, and melodic enough to fill venues ten times the size. This is the paradox with Prior’s music, and it makes her all the more captivating as an artist.” Oxford Culture Review 2016 Tickets £2.50 | Couples £4 | Groups of 4 £6 | Groups of 10 £10 | #HafrenBethPrior

NEWTOWN MUSICAL THEATRE COMPANY PRESENTS

THE PRODUCERS A NEW MEL BRooKS MUSICAL Book by MEL BROOKS and THOMAS MEEHAN

Lyrics by MEL BROOKS

Original direction and choreography by Susan Stroman Newtown Musical Theatre Company is delighted to present Mel Brooks’ award-winning smash hit ‘The Producers.’ In 1959, Broadway’s worst producer Max Bialystock schemes with neurotic accountant Leo Bloom to make millions by putting on a play that is guaranteed to flop. Written by a not-so secret fan of the Third Reich, staged by the most overthe-top director in history, and financed by a gaggle of raunchy little old ladies, Bialystock and Bloom’s ‘Springtime for Hitler’ seems sure “to close on page four” - what could possibly go right? With some adult humour, this zany, hilarious musical farce will bring tears (of laughter) to your eyes as it pokes fun at just about everything and everyone! Cyflwynir Newtown Musical Theatr sioe newydd ‘The Producers’.

HYWEL PHILLIPS

TIM EDMUNDS

Early December – End February 2018

Early March - Mid May 2018

www.northbearfilms.com Hywel was born in 1968 and raised in Swansea with the beautiful landscapes of the Gower peninsula on one side and the Tawe and Neath valleys on the other. He and his wife moved back to Wales in 2014, settling in Welshpool, and opened the flood gates of landscape photographic inspiration. Camping on top of mountains, checking the weather forecasts for snow and sunshine, tromping around exploring mid-Wales with a camera in hand, he discovered there’s a whole gallery of fleeting moments of beautiful light and abstract forms out there just waiting to be captured. Few travelling landscape photographers discover them, rushing for the easier charms of Pen-Y-Fan or Snowdon. But in mid-Wales one is often the only person on a whole mountain - so if you want to share those magic moments when the clouds part and the light is just perfect, Hywel may have been the only person in the whole world to even have been there to see them, let alone photograph them. 36

I am a local lad and attended Llanidloes High School during the 1960s. I became ill in 2014 with a neurological disorder called Dystonia which is basically a condition where the brain sends incorrect signals to certain muscles or muscle groups causing them to pull and cramp. Having little or no ability to remember caused me a great deal of distress, fear and anger. For some reason visual art was the only thing that seemed to get through, Diane my wife noticed this and on my better days would trundle me off to various galleries in the area. I said to myself ‘write it down, draw it, record it and do maths to see if it’s all wrong, well the maths lasted a week but I could now understand that I was not going senile. These books are now my Aide Memoir and reading and re-reading them has given me a new normalcy for myself. The artwork that you see here is the work I have done as an aside to the Black Books. It’s taken four years to do. Yes, it’s my memory and my story. My Memoir. Book online at thehafren.co.uk

Ychwanegwch £1 at y cyfanswm (os yw’n llai na £65.00) ac os ydych yn dymuno i’ch tocynnau gael eu postio atoch.

CYFRADDAU I GRWPIAU Mae’r rhain ar gael i grwpiau o 10 neu fwy ar gyfer y mwyafrif o berfformiadau. Bydd un tocyn ar gael am ddim gyda phob 10 tocyn sy’n cael eu harchebu. Gofynnwch yn y swyddfa docynnau p’un a yw cyfraddau i grwpiau yn gymwys ar gyfer y perfformiad yr ydych yn dymuno ei weld. Ar gyfer grwpiau o fwy na 25, ffoniwch Del Thomas, Rheolwr Marchnata, ar 01686 614556 er mwyn trafod mwy o ddisgownt.

AD-DALIADAU A CHYFNEWIDIADAU Mae Hafren yn gwerthfawrogi ymrwymiad cwsmeriaid i’r theatr trwy archebu’n gynnar ar gyfer achlysuron ac yn cydnabod y gall newidiadau ddigwydd o ran cynlluniau. Mewn achos o’r fath, os bydd tocynnau’n cael eu dychwelyd i’r swyddfa docynnau, gwnawn bob ymdrech i’w hail-werthu i gwsmeriaid eraill. Ni ellir sicrhau hyn gan y bydd tocynnau’r theatr yn cael eu gwerthu’n gyntaf. Os bydd y theatr yn llwyddo i ail-werthu’r tocynnau, bydd y swyddfa docynnau’n trefnu credyd i chi am werth y tocynnau, i chi ei ddefnyddio wrth archebu unrhyw docynnau yn y dyfodol. Bydd y trefniant hwn yn gymwys ar gyfer y prynwr gwreiddiol y tocynnau. Yn anffodus, yn unol â mwyafrif o theatrau proffesiynol eraill, nid yw’n bosibl gwneud ad-daliadau ariannol am docynnau sydd wedi’u prynu eisoes.

CYFLEUSTERAU I’R ANABL Mae dau le parcio wedi’u neilltuo ger drysau ffrynt y theatr ar gyfer y rhai sy’n berchen ar Fathodynnau Glas. Dylai unigolion sy’n defnyddio cadair olwyn ddefnyddio prif fynedfa Coleg Powys er mwyn manteisio ar y drysau awtomatig. Mae’r mynediad i’r Swyddfa Docynnau, Bar yr Oriel, a’r Awditoriwm yn wastad. Mae lle i 6 cadair olwyn ar gael o flaen y prif seddau, a dylid trefnu lle ymlaen llaw ar gyfer hyn. Mae arwydd llachar yn dynodi’r toiledau, ac mae mynedfa i gadair olwyn a thoiled pwrpasol ar gael. Mae yna system cylchwifrau (loop system) i gwsmeriaid sydd â nam ar y clyw a gall y rhai sydd am ddefnyddio’r system honno droi pob teclyn clyw i ‘T’. Gellir gofyn hefyd am glustffonau. Gallwch wneud cais i dderbyn gwybodaeth am achlysuron y theatr mewn print bras.

LLUNIAETH Bydd bar y theatr ar agor awr cyn cychwyn pob perfformiad, a hefyd yn ystod yr egwyl ac ar ôl pob perfformiad. Er mwyn manteisio ar yr egwyl, awgrymwn eich bod yn archebu eich diodydd ymlaen llaw, gan y gall y bar fod yn brysur dros ben yn ystod yr egwyl. Mae siop goffi’r theatr a’r bwth hufen iâ hefyd ar agor yn ystod perfformiadau’r hwyr. LLOGI’R THEATR Mae awditoriwm y theatr a chyfleusterau eraill ar gael ar gyfer cynadleddau, cyfarfodydd busnes ac achlysuron arbennig. Bydd lle i 500 yn y brif awditoriwm gyda chyfleusterau llwyfannu cyflawn a goleuadau, a chyfres o ystafelloedd llai at ddefnydd ategol neu achlysuron llai. Bydd gwasanaeth technegol proffesiynol ar gael ar y safle er mwyn sicrhau’r gwasanaeth gorau posibl o ran sain, goleuadau a chyflwyniad eich achlysur. Mae’r arlwyaeth yn apelio at ofynion unrhyw un, ac mae’r theatr yn cynnig amgylchedd trefnus a phroffesiynol, hyblyg o ran lleoli niferoedd o 10 a mwy. Cysylltwch â Melanie Pettit ar 01686 614232. HYNT Mae Hynt yn gynllun mynediad cenedlaethol newydd sy’n gweithio gyda theatrau a chanolfannau celfyddydau yng Nghymru i sicrhau bod cynnig cyson ar gael i ymwelwyr â nam neu ofynion mynediad penodol ac i’w Gofalwyr a’u Cynorthwywyr Personol. Bydd y wefan yn nodi popeth fydd angen i chi ei wybod am Hynt; ar gyfer pwy mae Hynt, beth mae’n ei ddarparu, a sut i ddod yn aelod. Os oes angen cefnogaeth neu gymorth arnoch i fynychu perfformiad mewn theatr neu ganolfan gelf, yna efallai y byddwch yn gymwys i ymuno â Hynt. PERFFORMIADAU HAMDDENOL Bydd perfformiadau hamddenol ar agor i bawb, ond bydd awyrgylch y theatr wedi ei addasu yn arbennig ar gyfer teuluoedd sydd â phlant gydag Awtistiaeth, unigolion gyda chyflwr synhwraidd a chyfathrebol yn ogystal a’r rheina sydd efo anawsterau dysgu. Yn wir gall unrhyw un fanteisio ar awyrgylch mwy hamddenol y theatr yn ystod y cyfnodau hyn.
