Funding for Sports at CT

For us to go to Legacy stadium to watch our football and soccer teams play under the lights, or to the softball field to watch our softball players dominate the diamond, teams have to put in a lot of work behind the scenes to raise money and do what they do. Fundraising is a very important part for sports program, it’s what takes care of our athletes. There’s multiple methods of effective ways to raise big amounts of money in a certain time period. Our football, soccer, and softball programs all did SnapRaise for their fundraiser this year. SnapRaise is a website where every member of the team sends out emails to family, friends, and supporters asking for kind donations to the program. On top of that, our football team sold Cougar Cards like they’ve done in the past. Cougar Cards are cards that get you great deals and discounts at some of our favorite food places around Aurora. Team Captain Max Gonzales goes into detail about the football team’s cougar cards. “We had to sell 10 cards each, $30 for each card, and there was 120 players trying to sell cards,” Max explained. With all the money our sports program raise, it covers all kinds of things. It can cover things from the uniforms to the equipment, and even transportation. For example, our soccer teams money covers its equipment and other luxuries. “Our fundraiser covered for us and our new jerseys, equipment, balls, nets, and buses,” senior soccer player Sepand Habibi stated. But to get all of these luxuries, the team had to meet their goal . The team had incentives if they met their goal such as rewards. “Our reward if we met our goal is we got school/ team clothing based on the amount of money we raised individually. Whoever sold the most got headphones,” Sepand said. Coaches will do this to make sure the team participates in the fundraiser, helping the program raise money to benefit them. Along with rewards can come consequences within fundraising. The obvious consequence would be the lack of resources and luxuries within the program, but for our football team, there’s more. Our football team has the consequence of running, a well known term among athletes in CT, and especially in the football program. Running conditions our athletes into the best shape possible and in some cases, it’s the first form of discipline for coaches to enforce. Individuals who didn’t meet their individual goal that was contributing to the program’s goal had to run individually. “Those who didn’t meet the goal had to run trails until they reached the goal,” explained Max. Running is a way to motivate athletes to participate in the fundraising so they can avoid it. Ultimately, Fundraising plays a huge part for our sports programs here at CT. It helps have the best equipment possible for our athletes, transportation, new jerseys to wear, and plenty of other necessities and luxuries.
