Promoting Business in the Swan Hill Region

Why we should ‘Shop Local’ In today’s fast moving world ‘Shopping Local’ is as important as it has ever been. With access to improved transport services the temptation to jump in the car and drive to a larger centre to purchase items is very tempting. Likewise, the lure of internet shopping can also encourage us to look elsewhere for shopping options. However, there are some outstanding reasons why shopping locally should be a priority for local consumers. Firstly is the obvious benefit to the local economy by consumers spending the money at locally-owned businesses.

This means that that the money you spend stays in the community, the business owner is likely to spend their profits locally spreading the money you have spent around even more, local people are employed which means their wages are re-invested into the community and as local businesses grow, they employ more staff and invest more in their business, benefiting the local economy even more. Significantly, if you ask local charities, organisations and sporting clubs who their biggest sponsors are you will find that more often than not it is local businesses who support them and their endeavors the most. Local businesses are owned by

people who live in this community, are less likely to leave, and are more invested in the community’s welfare and future. Local businesses are run by local people who often know their customers personally. This means that personalised service and achieving customer satisfaction is a high priority for local-owner business people. This booklet has an array of local businesses and I urge customers to take advantage of the services and products that are on offer within our own community. PETER WALSH MLA

Look again at what Swan Hill has to offer We all know that shopping at local businesses is important for the local economy and supporting our community, but what are the benefits to you when shopping locally? Shopping in your local community can be a rewarding experience in more ways than one. Not only are you contributing to the growth of local business, but you’re getting a friendly experience and getting to know the people who bring you such a great range of products.

Our shopkeepers take great pride in carefully selecting the products they know you want. They know what the popular items are, where the demand is and the best products on the market so you can be sure you are getting bang for your buck... how can you be sure that expensive leather jacket you’re eying off online was really made in Italy? The Swan Hill CBD is filled with a range of independent businesses and well-known franchises which means we are getting a great mix of products new to the market,

along with the stuff we know and love. With Christmas fast approaching, I couldn’t imagine looking any further for gift ideas. Shopping locally is good for you. It’s better for your time and better for your dollar. Next time you’re rushing down the street to grab the usual couple of items, stop and look again. Take some time and make a morning of it, check out what’s on offer, sit down and have a coffee to recharge and keep going - there’s plenty out there! ANDREW BROAD MP

Buying local is supporting locals Our diverse range of retail outlets, quality restaurants and cafes, local supply businesses and markets, ensure our region continues to be an inviting destination to live, work, shop, invest and visit. Through its visits to local businesses throughout the region earlier this year, Council’s Economic Development Unit reported that our business owners buy locally wherever they can. These same businesses, however, also rely on us locals for their sales. By buying locally, not only are we supporting businesses within our own community, but the ability of these businesses to continue to buy locally, stimulating and

6 | Swan Hill Region First

growing our economy. As a Council we recognise the crucial role of businesses in the success of our community - after all, the local economy is the backbone of our region. Economic growth is one of the key strategic outlines in the Council Plan, while Council’s five-year Economic Development Strategy sets the direction to build upon our local economy and our region. On the ground we have also seen the revitalisation of the central business districts in Swan Hill and Robinvale. These projects are another step in maintaining and helping our local businesses to develop.

In particular, the completion of Stages 1 and 2 of the Swan Hill CBD upgrades has improved the visual appeal of the city, enhancing its retail centre and resulting in a unique streetscape. Council is now looking forward to the completion of Stage 3, which will see a further revitalisation of Swan Hill’s shopping centre. This latest stage will also have a flow-on effect, encouraging and inviting our community and visitors to shop, and therefore invest, locally. Cr Les McPhee Mayor Swan Hill Rural City Council

Welcome to Swan Hill Region First I take great pleasure in welcoming you to this very special ‘Guardian ‘produced local magazine, Swan Hill Region First. This ‘totally local’ high quality magazine production profiles industrious, innovative Swan Hill Region businesses who are leaders in their respective fields and the lifeblood of our local economy. These businesses take pride in their localism and their relationships with their local customers. The businesses profiled have a wealth of knowledge and expertise in their respective fields. The Swan Hill Region ‘Retail sector’ has and will continue to provide locals with an abundance of product and service offerings which match those in larger regional centres. Our region businesses’ greatest advantage is their local proximity. This key

attribute is complimented by our local retailers specialised market knowledge and high quality after sales service attributes. The Swan Hill CBD is looking absolutely stunning after its extensive re-development. Arguably, the city’s retailers and consumers now trade in a precinct unmatched by any other regional centre. This special ‘Swan Hill Region First’ magazine is endorsed by the Swan Hill Inc. Retail Committee. This initiative supports Swan Hill Inc. Retail’s long term promotional plan to support local businesses by encouraging local consumers to ‘think local first’ when making their spending decisions. Terry Jennings, Chairman, Swan Hill Inc. Retail Committee.

La Mangia Cafe | 179 Campbell Street | Swan Hill | 5033 2475 Breakfast | Lunch | Morning and Afternoon Teas

About La Mangia Cafe La Mangia Cafe/Sonre Farm is a family owned and operated business. Ben & Ros Mangiameli and family run the Italian style Cafe located at 179 Campbell Street, Swan Hill. It is new, stylish and spacious. For all your hunger needs, stocking a range of gourmet foods, Pastas, Foccacias, Wraps and Sandwiches or your thirst needs with a range of different coffees, hot chocolates, or iced cold drinks. We also have a liquor licence so a cold beverage to end your day would comfort your cravings. We also stock a range of our freshly made products from Sonre farm (Olive Oil, Dressings, Jams and more...). With the spacious and relaxed atmosphere we wish to create a modern vibe within the town of Swan Hill and a different alternative when down the street.

State-of-the-art winemaking Andrew Peace Wines is one of Australia’s fastest growing family owned and operated wineries. Situated on the banks of the mighty Murray River in north-west Victoria, Andrew Peace Wines (APW) is in one of Australia’s premier fruit growing regions. Andrew Peace Wines has developed into a state-ofthe-art winemaking and viticultural enterprise from its origin as a small family owned vineyard in 1980. Ranking in the top 1.5% of Australian wineries by intake, APW has transformed itself into world class

modern winery facility with a 35 million litre capacity in 2011 from a humble 2.3 million litre vintage back in 1995. Currently 95% of our wines are exported, with a strong market foothold in the UK, USA, Canada, China and SE Asia, Germany and Sweden. This growth has seen an expansion of our high-tech facilities, and the creation of a highly decorated, experienced and dedicated management team. The team consists of winemakers, technical and grower service

officers, viticulturist/ vineyard managers and highly experienced export, financial, distribution and marketing staff. APW takes advantage of the region’s Mediterranean climate to produce high quality grapes that reflect the varietal character of the classic red and white styles. The vineyard practices at APW aims to provide the best possible fruit from mature and well nurtured vines. These vines are ‘low yield’ to ensure the highest quality fruit and retain the ultimate integrity of varietal character.

Promoting Business in the Swan Hill Region

Industrial, Trades, Professional and Services Surrounded by vast agricultural and horticultural land, Swan Hill is a source of equipment, machinery and services for a wide range of tradespeople, professionals and businesses.

Much of Swan Hill and its surrounds are built upon the trade and craftsmanship of local small business, with builders, landscapers, designers, electricians and labourers just some of the many individuals who contribute to the makeup of the region’s economic profile. Skilled professionals provide insight, service and advice across all fields, from the law to accountancy, banking and real estate, with many shopfronts conducting local, knowledgeable service from its central business district. Industry is the backbone of the Swan Hill district, with agriculture, livestock exchange, the exporting

of much local produce and tourism all adding to the colour and life of this unique corner of Victoria. The region’s fertile soil produces wheat, stone fruit, nuts and a diverse range of wines. Buyers from across Australia and internationally create strong demand for the products that are grown and sewn by local producers. Part of the Goulburn Murray Irrigation District – dubbed “Victoria’s Food Bowl” – the Swan Hill district is fed by the beautiful mighty Murray, and investment in that vital source has retained much of the industry that makes the area plentiful. The Murray is a further draw-card for tourists looking for a tranquil spot to enjoy a good meal and a glass of wine beside its waters, and Swan Hill is a regular stop on visitors’ journeys through the Mallee region. Promoting Business in the Swan Hill Region

Think local The ITPS committee welcomes the first edition of Swan Hill Region First, which promotes the businesses operating in the Swan Hill Region. This Initiative is what Swan Hill Incorporated is all about, promoting and developing our beautiful region and creating awareness of what we as locals can offer not only each other, but also offer people from out of town. The ITPS committee comes together once every month to work voluntarily on projects which benefit businesses in Swan Hill. Over the last few years the committee has been working with local organisations on projects such as the “Set your heart on a career in accounting” project which has seen over 90 local secondary school students participate in work experience which helps to raise awareness of local finance and accounting jobs and the opportunities to work and study in Swan Hill. Another initiative Swan Hill Incorporated participates in is the Regional Victoria Living Expo in Melbourne. This expo is held to entice visitors to take a tree change and move to regional Victoria. This year the organisation invited families to come and visit Swan Hill for a weekend and to show what Swan Hill has to

offer and promote our town as a great place to live and work.

In the coming year the ITPS committee will focus on promoting and marketing local business while supporting local projects and initiatives. Currently the committee is working with Swan Hill Rural City Council to establish bus shelters in Swan Hill, with the intent to have the shelters developed and manufactured locally. Another great initiative will be the development of a magazine to promote Swan Hill business and industry success stories, which will feature local businesses, industries and people and can be used to promote Swan Hill as a great place to Live, Work, Shop and Visit. To continue our work, the ITPS Committee is always looking for new initiatives and welcomes any suggestions. We invite you to contact us through the Swan Hill Region Information Centre, if you would like to be involved.

Specialising in: • Full hearing assessments • Free hearing services for all Pensioners and Veterans • Report to your GP or Specialist • Provision and servicing of all makes and models of hearing aids • Hearing Aid selection, fitting and hearing rehabilitation programs • Tinnitus management and counselling • Alternate listening devices including amplified phones and TV headphones also available

Hearing health is something we all take for granted. It usually takes a loved one to point out we are missing parts of the conversation before we accept that we may need our hearing checked. For those concerned about their hearing health, or the hearing health of a loved one, free hearing tests are offered to pensioners and veterans at Acoustic Health – Swan Hill’s only locally owned and operated hearing clinic. Owner Merryn Transton of Acoustic Health has been providing hearing services to residents in Swan Hill in a caring manner as owner since November of 2012. Merryn started working in the hearing industry in 2002 as a receptionist, where she discovered that helping the hard of hearing was extremely rewarding and satisfying. This drove Merryn to complete her Audiometry certificate in 2005 and began practising as a hearing specialist in the Echuca and Swan Hill areas. Merryn now owns and runs her own clinic at Acoustic Health in Swan Hill. Merryn, Nathan and their three young children have been part of the Swan Hill community for 18 months. Merryn enjoys all aspects of running her own business and gets much satisfaction in helping members of the community

actively participate in life again. “I enjoy helping people hear better and achieve better hearing in situations they thought were no longer possible. I love the challenge of being presented with a problem” says Merryn. Acoustic Health are proud to be independently owned and operated meaning that nonbiased hearing services and recommendations are guaranteed. Eligible pensioners and veterans can take advantage of free hearing services at Acoustic Health including free hearing tests and hearing aids. Merryn advises that “Gone are the days when hearing aids were big clunky devices that sit around your neck and whistle. These days hearing aids are wireless and so discreet that some are actually invisible.” Assistive listening devices also help users connect to mobile phones, televisions and audio devices through streaming sound via remote controls directly into the hearing aids themselves.

For anyone interested in a free hearing test or trial at Acoustic Health they are recommended to drop by at 46 McCallum Street or call Merryn and her team for an appointment on 5032 4646.

tunity when taking a drive, walking by the river, or following one of the many nature trails for bird-watching that make up this ecologically diverse region.

With a pioneer history now carefully preserved, the town is today a bustling modern hub with a number of small townships in its surrounds making up the fascinating Swan Hill district.

Accommodation is available to suit a variety of needs and wants, from the luxury of Murray Downs resort, to a host of motels, to camping, caravan and cabin alternatives in scenic locations.

If you are looking for a bit more action, play golf till your heart’s content at the acclaimed Murray Downs course, which is one of the top regional courses in Australia.

A thriving theatrical and artistic culture complements the active sporting community, where there is always a game, a show or an exhibition to attract your attention and keep you entertained. From the moment you enter the town, the wide tree-lined streets and easy access to the beautiful Murray River help you relax and unwind with a picnic, a riverboat tour or a fine meal. A stunning variety of natural attractions in this unique part of Australia include inland lakes, both salt water and fresh, red gum forests, rambling vineyards and vistas of the iconic scrubland characteristic to the Mallee plains. The Heart of the Murray The recent upgrades and refurbishments to the Pioneer Settlement have allowed our iconic tourist attraction to shine, as visitors step back in time and learn more about the rich river culture and the significant importance of the river during the years of trading via paddle steamers. The Pioneer Settlement is a great place to take friends or relatives that come to visit, as a local rate payer your entry is free which makes for an affordable afternoon out. Kids can take a ride on the horse and cart, enjoy some old fashioned lollies, make rope and churn butter. Our region has many unique visitor experiences as well, for something a bit different try travelling across the Speewa punt, one of only two River crossing of its kind from Albury to Mildura. On the way back cruise through the vineyards and orchards that surround the river and the Tooleybuc area. You can also call in and visit the Pheasant farm to top off your day of exploring our less mainstream visitor attractions.

The Catalina aircraft Museum in Lake Boga is worth a visit and is full of information about the Catalina’s stationed at Lake Boga during WW11. Maybe you could play a round of golf at one of Australia’s leading resort courses Murray Downs Golf & Country Club. Fishing, kayaking and cycling are all very popular activities to undertake in Swan Hill with the Murray River providing a stunning backdrop for all of these activities. Pick up a copy of the local walking tracks guide from the information centre to find great tracks and hidden local secrets. Many of Swan Hill cafes and restaurants proudly showcase our delicious local produce from home grown olives to our famous stone fruit which makes its way all around Australia every summer and even gets used to make gelato locally, perfect on a summer’s day. For more information on all the great things to see and do in the Swan Hill region please call in and visit the Swan Hill Region Information centre or go online to www.swanhillonline.com.au.
