According to Marketing Director Helen Gray, of the estimated 109,000 real estate firms in the United States real estate industry only .001 percent have an annual sales volume that exceeds one billion dollars. The Group does so, demonstrating a degree of productivity virtually unheard of among real estate companies of its size. And a number of recent reports have placed the company among “the big dogs” yet again. HOME BREWING Fort Collins’ favorite cottage industry.

Colorado is increasingly recognized for its craft beer culture. Fort Collins in particular has been lovingly referred to by locals as “the Napa Valley of beer.” The town’s micro-breweries span the ranks from nationally-respected New Belgium to smaller establishments like Horse & Dragon or Pateros Creek. But recent years have brought a new trend among beer lovers: home brewing. Several Group Partners and clients are active participants in this exciting new community of craft beer culture. We had the chance to talk to them about their passion.

When did you start homebrewing? I first brewed many years ago, when my kids were little and we lived in Portland. But kids and life and time allotments didn’t allow it after a while, so I stopped. I just restarted about 2 years ago. What was your inspiration? Love of beer first of all. Second, at that time, Portland was kind of the craft-brewing Mecca in the US. There were a lot of craft brewers in that town so there was a heightened awareness. Fort Collins has become that same thing and it just got to that point where it was like, I have time for this now, I need to get back into it. How did you get started? Back then I was in a different career—I was a chef, so I was pretty in tune with food and restaurants, but even then there were craft brew stores. I got some home brewing books, took trips to the library and I just started messing around. Figuring out what equipment was needed, building up the equipment I needed. It’s pretty hard to mix those ingredients together and not get beer. Whether it’s any good or not, that’s a different story.

Home Brewing | COMMUNITY FOCUS Ken Vetter grows his own hops on his Fort Collins property then harvests, dries, weighs and freezes his hops for future home brewing.

What were some unexpected things you learned about the process? Don’t overdo it. Keep the beer real simple. Don’t become too creative with it, because it kind of ruins the foundation of the beer if you start adding too many things. Simplicity is elegance. Final Thoughts? Home brewing is a good excuse to gather with friends. You can drink a few beers while you’re doing it, and it’s a good reason to gather. It’s a very social process.

When did you start homebrewing? I tried my first couple of batches of homebrew around 1988 or 1989. I was less than impressed with my results, though, so I set it aside for a couple of years. Then in early 1992 I started brewing with 4 other guys I worked with at NCR Microelectronics here in town. We had good results at the outset it seemed, so it pretty much stuck at that point in time. What was your inspiration? I wouldn’t say I had one back then. When I started on my own, it was a curiosity, and then when I started “for real” with my friends from work, it was a great reason to hang out and enjoy drinking beer. Can you talk about the home brewing community in Fort Collins? For as long as I’ve been doing this there has been a large community of homebrewers here in town. There was a homebrew club here back in the early 90s, and there used to be a place at Thunderbird Plaza where people could go to “homebrew” on their equipment, and then come back to bottle a couple of weeks later. One of my managers at work took his direct reports there for a “team building exercise” back in 1995 or 1996. I know a lot of people here in Fort Collins that are homebrewers today. I’ve never been involved with the homebrew clubs but I know today the Liquid Poets are perhaps the largest one here in town. What made you decide to try and open your own brewery? There’s a fun topic! I took about 10 years off from homebrewing between 2002 and 2012. There was so much good beer to drink here in town with our local breweries, and I started a new hobby—woodworking. Then in mid-2012, I happened to see a Facebook post by a guy I went to college with in Memphis, TN from 1977-1981. He had just built this slick new all-electric brewing setup that piqued my interest. I did some Googling and found a website on electric brewing that looked an awful lot like what I saw on Facebook. So I checked with my old college friend, verified that was it, and back to homebrewing I went. Before I even had the system built and up and running my wife Cathy said to me one day, why don’t we open a brewery? So here we are today, trying to do just that. Final thoughts My experience with homebrewing as a hobby has been that it’s a great way to hang out with friends and neighbors. And now that I’m trying to “go pro” with the hobby, I’ve re-learned what I’ve always known—the local microbrewery community is made up of a great bunch of people! My wife and I will count ourselves proud if we are lucky enough to be able to join that community.
