Valerie started her jewelry business about 35 years ago using Antique French Ormolu Stampings which are brass and bronze embellishments, “mounts “,used during the Louis XVI period on furniture, clocks ,books, boxes, etc. she serendipitously discovered while on a interior design job in Paris. They were so boldly beautiful and detailed that she decided to repurpose them into earrings and pins.
She was up and running in a new career… weaning away from her New York Interior Design Company called “PLACELIFT”. Using the lightweight stampings she paired them with very lightweight metallic tread necklaces are still classic and great for travel. With a Buccellati solid gold look that sells between 20K - 40K, Valerie’s are mostly under $200. Magnetic clasps make them a breeze to fasten.
These have been marketed in exclusive boutiques such as Barneys, Bendels and Bergdorf’s and others in the USA. Now she prefers “give back” and shows at Fundraisers , Charities, and Private Shows mostly on the East Coast.
“styling women is the most pleasurable part of my business, so I prefer direct contact with my customers in order to empower & bring out the best of their potential” Her next phase was reaching out to foreign lands with adventure and sourcing in mind. In her own words she tells the stories: “While visiting a friend in Bangkok, I took a side trip to Bali. Not knowing anyone I arrived in the middle of the night and asked an airport taxi to take me to the nearest hotel,
whatever, on the beach. Exhausted, I crashed and woke up so disappointed to be in Kuta Beach ... the tourist center, and wondered ... is this all there is? Years ago I had cut out and saved an article in Architectural Digest about a fabulous Irish Interior Designer in Ubud, Bali named Linda Garland so I called an made an appointment for a visit to her small shop on her 100 acre bamboo Plantation. Jumped on my rented motorbike with a $1 “fill ‘er up” and winded my way 2 hours north in search of Ubud and Linda. Got pulled over by the local traffic police twice.. ”Bali license?” In a quandary and with a hope and a prayer I showed them my US drivers license and 5,000 rupiah’’ $5 US and drove off with no chase upon me. Yes… they had seen a blond turisto coming and ah, yes, the ways of the world . What a trip and pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. I opened a gate and walked through a red and black big bamboo path into a veritable Shangri-La. Jaw-dropping vistas of rice terraces, waterfalls, bamboo guest cottages and the master
sleep with the cacophony of the cricket, frog and geko symphony and awakening with the cocks crowing and the ducks honking was a new treat. house , which was where Julia Roberts stayed in the film. One could never dream this place up. I immediately booked the largest antique Javanese house down by the river for 6 weeks the following February-March. Thought my 2 boys would go nuts over this experience on their next Spring Break. Linda was divorced with 2 boys also and sympathized with a half price agreement. This was the beginning of a 20 year … 2 month a year… stint. Linda had visitors from all over the word like the Guinness’s, Sting, and Richard Branson ..to name a few. I settled into the rich culture … predominantly Hindu, got to know all the villages on my motorbike … each one specializing in a specific craft handed down from the ancestors. There were celebrations and cremations almost every week and indigenous dances every evening.. No TV to speak of except in a bar/restaurant. Met lots of expats, artists and writers. Every day was a different thrill… even riding in the warm afternoon rain, which turned the whole island the color of emeralds, was pleasurable. Going to
After trying out many craftsmen to execute my designs I found two families that worked in their homes that were very creative and understood my needs. We became very good friends. As I was out 24 hours from home , thought I may as well stop over in Hong Kong and go to the Jade market to find pieces and snuff bottles to bring to my Balinese next year to embellish:
Well, I could write a book about “Romancing the Stone in Africa” where I found dioptase in Namiba and traveled for three months with a friend sleeping in sleeping bags on top of a truck , bundu- bashing from Nairobi down to Cape town and up to Angola with a few near death experiences along the way. Yes, another life changer!
Istanbul & Morocco...my ttwo most exotic places. Eating and sleeping on the Sahara around a fire and being fed and serenaded by our Touareg (Nomadic peoples) guide was unforgettable. It was like sleeping in a planetarium or drifting out in the universe. Not a sound nor a breeze.. only peace. How transcending. It made me hope this is the way of our final resting place. Then awakening with the sun and seeing our camels laying next to us ..ready when we were… made me chuckle. Off to bargain with the nomads in the villages for parts with which to make pieces for my collection. Indigo blue clay stones and amber were my choices
Then there was India, Croatia. There were numerous adventures but it would take too long. So now I have all the goods in my Rowayton, CT workshop and all the pieces I have put together from my travels displayed in my Atelier . Why Jewelry: I’m fascinated with form and texture and love both natural and designed objects. I love jewelry that is both feminine and bold – and unique. I fall asleep dreaming of jewelry and possible combinations and designs. I have an obsession to create. When I’m not designing jewelry, I’m taking photos, cooking, gardening or crocheting.
Who are you designing for: My customer doesn’t belong to a demographic, but more of a psychographic. She wants to express her individuality with jewelry that makes her feel feminine or masculine by choosing pieces that are delicate or chunky, with the flexibility to wear them in different ways. She’s a bit rebellious and likes to add some bohemian irreverence to her style - and is not afraid of turning heads when she walks in a room.
What drives you as an artist: I usually create jewelry because there is something that I want that I canâ€™t find. Iâ€™m allergic to most metals in costume jewelry, so I love the idea of using organic, natural materials alone, or elevating them with gold, silver, semi-precious stones and diamonds to create something refined. I love the range of shapes and colors in Tahitian and South Sea pearls â€“ round, button, ringed, baroque; peacock, green, eggplant, blue, grey, champagne and silver and gold.

irst and foremost I do have to note that interviewing Suzy is an honor to say the least. From the very day I started GG Suzy has been so above and beyond supportive that it is actually difficult to find the words that could convey my gratitude. Since then suzy has become one of my closest, dearest friends, the type you know you will have for life. As I wrote this article I was reminded once again of what an incredibly brave, talented and gorgeous soul Suzy truly is. I hope you enjoy this interview and her words of wisdom as much as I have in writing them. -------For as long as she can remember, Susan McCabe, the incredibly talented and brilliant designer behind the vintage couture jewelry collection and brand Circa Suzy, has been infatuated with jewelry. Spending her early years scouring markets, antique fairs and auctions for unique vintage pieces with her mom is one of the most fond memories Suzy holds in her heart. Throughout Suzy’s early adult years she spent a significant amount of time traveling, amassing an impressive and huge collection of everything from serious vintage designer pieces to an extensive collection of beautiful one of a kind necklaces, bracelets, broaches and earrings. As Suzy continued to pursue her love of jewelry her collection grew and grew and grew. So much so that she decided to turn her beloved hobby into a business. As I sat down with Suzy to hear more about her brand and her courage to start something so unique from scratch, entirely
on her own, her genuine authenticity radiated throughout the room. Giving off an energy of childlike enthusiasm, Suzy’s passion and true love for taking pieces that were once so beautiful in their glory days and re-purposing them for a modern day look became crystal clear. But when it comes to these pieces it is not just jewelry to Suzy. Every piece tells a story, has a meaning, and will continue to have one or several more. Suzy’s appreciation for the history of every single piece that she works on and creates is humbling, and her honor of each pieces sentiment is admirable. Over the past few years Suzy has grown Circa Suzy into a multi-faceted brand. From what started as a collection of unique pieces in her multiple jewlery boxes has now blossomed into a multi-collection brand that is being recognized globally. From designers who flaunt her pieces during fashion week on the runways to boutiques, to movie stars and locals, Suzy has developed a loyal following for the niche market of vintage couture jewelry. Suzy continues to create new pieces every single day inspired by the revival of each piece and with the mission of making these pieces relevant to women today. With a deep appreciation for women and the unique style that we all have Suzy takes pride in her collections as well as her one on one custom work to design a specific design collection unique to each woman. Join me as I interview the beautiful, inside and out, Susan McCabe about where she derives her inspiration and for a peek into what is next for the magnificent brand of Circa Suzy.
LM: Suzy, we know a. bit about what inspired you from very early on in life. As you have embarked on this journey of building and growing Circa Suzy you have made tremendous moves in a very short time. Can you tell us a little bit about what the most cherished recent milestone in terms of recognition of your efforts and vision for you was? SM: Last month we were on the run way debuting CS at fashion week San Diego. Our runway models donned vintage slips from the 40’s and 50’s as a great back drop to our new line introduction. They rocked the runway..... LM: What inspires you? SM: Classic movies ... The silver screen. Old hollywood glamour LM: Do you design all over the world wherever you are or is there a specific room or studio you prefer? SM: I have two studios, one in Greenwich and one in La Jolla What was your most recent trunk show like? SM: We just had a fashion trunk show at Bellagio featuring our runway designs. It was a phenomenal success. We are currently working with turner classic movies( TCM ) aboard the classic film cruise which is mid November and we will be launched on their holiday gift web site. LM: Where can we purchase your designs? SM: You can view and purchase the majority of our collections on www.circasuzy.com. We most recently became available at the beautiful Tuckers Point in Bermuda just last month, where we were doing our photo shoot for GG coincidently enough, styled by Maryanne Infante and shot by Sacha Blackburne. It was incredible! Locally, you can find some of our pieces in person at the Katie Fong boutique in Greenwich. Designs are ongoing so not all pieces are online but we welcome personal consultations for viewing and designing. LM: Suzy, given that this issue is based around the dual meaning of pearls, jewelry and of wisdom, what are a few pearls of wisdom that you would recommend to all GG’s from one GG to another? Suzy’s pearls of wisdom... 1. Follow your passion no matter what stage of
life you are in. It will never seem like a job or work, if you truly love what you do. Passion is contagious!! It will spread to everyone around you. 2.Pay it forward... we all have something to learn and something to give. Be open to honest feedback and mentoring, learn from it, then pay it forward by teaching or sharing some of your talent with those that can use your help or direction. 3. Say thank you...no one does it alone... recognize and acknowledge who is helping you along the way. Little acts of sincere appreciation go a long way. Go for it. Go big or go home. Sure it is scary, but you will never grow if you do not take that chance that leap, put yourself out there. And if you get knocked down,” brush yourself off, and start all over again.” Be so proud of yourself that you tried and risked failing or even did fail because you learn from whatever the result is and then do it all over again. The “Kings & Queens of Late Night,” And Pink Elephants at The Lionheart Gallery The Lionheart Gallery in Pound Ridge, N.Y., features companion exhibits from Nov. 6 to Jan. 2 highlighting artists with a shared passion for topical subject matter that both render transfixing by enriching their themes with the depth and complexity of polyphonic music. “Recovering lawyer” and New York City artist Geoffrey Stein channels the mass appeal of late night comics who rule network and cable TV in collage portraits constructed with essential elements and imagery from the subjects’ lives. Connecticut artist Roxanne Faber Savage finds herself in the company of different celebrities as she travels into a heart of darkness to join the fight—through haunting images—for the survival of elephants still hunted and killed for their ivory tusks. If there’s a point of intersection between the two exhibits, it’s an unseen “elephant in the room”: While Savage avoids elephant imagery linked to the Republican Party, in 2015 Stein created a portrait of the most exaggerated manifestation of the GOP pachyderm in history. The artist’s mixed-media-on-paper portrait of Donald Trump incorporated materials from Trump’s third of four corporate bankruptcies. In “Kings & Queens of Late Night,” Stein’s lineup of late night heroes includes Jon Stewart, Jay Leno, Amy Schumer, Jimmy Fallon, Chelsea Handler, Samantha Bee, Larry Wilmore, Bill Maher, John Oliver, Trevor Noah, Stephen Colbert and David Letterman.

Stein, who received an MFA from the Slade School of Fine Art in London, has been painting full-time since 2000. Before that he was an attorney for 12 years. In early 2000 he quit his job and began art studies.
For Roxanne Faber Savage, the genesis of a new and powerful body of work began with a lie in visual form—the now ubiquitous photo on Facebook of an elephant with tusks dyed pink to render them valueless to poachers, something was never actually done. Nonetheless, the artist began a quest to learn about elephants and their plight, and then to create often playful, and sometimes darker, works that find equilibrium between a tragic global story and the artist’s embrace of Picasso-like simplicity, kitsch, and an overarching informality. The agony of the elephants inspires some of the most powerful images in the exhibit, notably prints that represent the tears of elephants. The narrative lyricism within the abstraction in those works in particular is nothing short of masterful.

“A particular story struck me,” says Faber Savage. “An American hunter (late 1800’s) managed to follow and track down a 60- to 70-year-old bull elephant. The story describes this final scene where the hunter shoots this massive beast, and the elephant looks directly at the hunter, slumps into a nearby tree, accepting his fate, and tears begin streaming from his eyes.” An opening reception is scheduled for Nov. 12, from 5 to 8 p.m., and special programming is being planned. Remember, you need to be the best you can be, the best version of yourself. You don’t need to have model looks, but you do need to make the most of what you have and exude confidence and femininity. Remember, what works for men is totally different than what is appealing to other women. Dress for men, not women!! Dressing for other women is totally common and normal, but it won’t get you the guys you want. In my “It Girl,” course we give you a head to toe make-over we analyze your hair, make-up and the clothes you are wearing on dates.
A large part of my work as a dating coach and matchmaker is helping women become “It Girls” on the inside. We work on dating strategies, self-esteem and boundaries. We also focus on law of attraction, femininity and and we start off my “It Girl,” course with an intention that the client custom designs on their own. But you can’t ignore the outside either. The attitude of “He should love me for me,” is very common - I am out on the dating trenches in my work as a dating coach and matchmaker and I hear that phrase a lot. If you want an attractive guy on the outside, you need to be willing to do the work to keep up your outsides. And it is work to do so.
Treat dating like a job in many ways. Put your best foot forward in the beginning, not revealing too much. Dating - in the initial stages - is similar to the job interview process. Say too much and you could ruin a good thing. Honest but mysterious will get you far in the initial stages of dating. Men don’t appreciate anything they get too easily.

LUCKY PENNY Have you ever picked up a lucky penny? There are so many meaning, yes pennies can be the nuisance that weighs heavy in your wallet, or causes clutter in the pocket of your car ’s dashboard. To some though a penny is a reminder, a symbol or a message. I AM THE MALE BO DEREK By Mark Damon Puckett
he Greenwich Girl herself once called me “the male Bo Derek,” while we were sitting around talking at a friend’s house in downtown Greenwich. This got me to thinking that if I was Bo Derek, what would I do to keep young and fit? I can also remember being in a bar in Rye, New York, where I met a model who ended up getting me an agent on Park Avenue. I often trained down to Manhattan for go-sees and auditions. I was asked to strip down for a Vaseline ad. I was perpetually told, “You’re here for your hair,” as if the rest of me did not exist.
Now, being a writer with numerous graduate degrees in writing an English, I sometimes get a little antsy when people start obsessing about my hair. Let’s talk about poetry, damnit. However, no one wants to talk about poetry. Therefore, I have comprised and written some Bo Derek wannabe male beauty tips in the form of a poem. Well, more of a list. But it sort of looks like a poem. Nevertheless, still having my hair as I approach age 50 is really a bonus in the end. What you have to realize is that, male or female, your hair is a reflection of your diet; no product will help it if what you eat and drink is not healthy.
I HAVE FOUND THAT THE FOLLOWING IS BO DEREK WORTHY: • Drink lots of green shit. Green Vibrance is a powder that works the best. Tastes like glorified dirt but is perfect for hair growth. • Do not use conditioner, especially if you have thinner hair. Only organic shampoos. • Fresh juice twice a week (carrot, apple, beet, ginger, garlic, kale, cucumber). • Hats ruin scalps. But wear them in intense sun. • Do not buy shampoos in the supermarket or drugstore unless they are organic. • In the sun, applied gels and sprays tend to increase hair damage. • Apply Thayers Witch Hazel (no alcohol) to your scalp once in awhile. • Clean your hairbrush with witch hazel when it’s full of hairs. • Change your part from one side to the next from time to time. • Don’t smoke. Messes you up internally and blows up on your hair externally. Now, I’m no hair expert, but I do have a bunch of it. And this is what I’ve done. And people stop me on the street and ask me about it.
