Holiday Healing

Written By: Dina Lockridge

Holiday Healing by Dina Lockridge It’s that celebratory holiday time of year that also accompanies the old adage of what also can conjure stressful planning and time. Finding the right time to get your gifts, choosing the special ones, traveling and of course mingling with family, which can be lovely but overwhelming at times. Here are a few peaceful reminders to remain present during the hectic holiday season when sensory overload in kicking in.

1

Breathe. I mean it. Take deep inhalations and exhalations before during and after any anticipated shopping or interactions with others. A good yoga breath is breathe in for three breaths, hold for one, and breathe out for four. It just helps center yourself and remind you that you are in control of your emotions in any moment you may feel out of

control.

3

Nature. Get out. Get bundled or cozy and plan a hike. Just get walking, moving, grooving through a grove of trees and just watch the tension leave your mind and your body. Whether you’re in your hometown and know a familiar trail or on a new vacation getaway, get yourself, outdoors in nature. Truly healing.

5

Meditation. I wrote a piece on this a few months back and even if it’s for five minutes, whether you’ve been doing it for years or never have before, sit in silence and just watch your thoughts, observe your emotions and let it go. One of the greatest gifts you can give yourself all year long.

2

Music. The end and all and be all of all healing in my opinion. If you’re stressed or sad put on some happy tunes, albeit holiday or not. The kind that gets your body bouncing to the beat, brings a smile to your face, and where you can’t help but belt the chorus out. Create a playlist for each mood you may be in as your go to in an emotional emergency. And tune it up. Loud.

4

Spa service. I live my life in a belief system of the powerful connection between our mind, body, and spirits. Whatever you can do to treat your body to a relaxation; a massage, sauna, Jacuzzi, steam room or other body treatment, do it. Find a local business and give yourself an hour or more of connecting with tranquility and quiet. It not only enhances your physical being but your mind can quiet allowing you to recoup for upcoming family time and adventures.

There are so many ways to slow down and take time to care for yourself. We often forget this when it is most crucial which is why we have a tendency to reach that breaking point before we really have to. In any given moment of tension, stress, sadness, anxiety or anger choose any one of these and I guarantee it will ease you into getting through an uncomfortable time and enhance you feeling better. Comfort yourself so that you can enjoy all the beauty and traditions this time of year has to offer. Happy Holidays to all! Visit www.FEMINASAGA.com for more inspiration.

Reflections How to make the holidays live on‌

Written By: Jen Graziano

I

’ve always broached the holiday season with a tempered joy. While I love the smells, the sights and the sounds of all things “December”, I can’t help but be aware that not everyone is celebrating the season. One of the most painful realities of my profession is recognizing the sadness that lingers in many hearts during the holidays. When you’ve lost the one you love the season is never the same. While you are forced to live in the present and turn that calendar page to December, for so many people this time of year is marked by loneliness and hardened hearts. I’ve long wished for a “magic wand” to wipe away the pain for the families I encounter during the holidays, but logically I’ve accepted one does not exist. What I can offer, however, are some thoughts to cope with loss amidst the season. The first thing one must recognize is that holidays going forward will be different. Its okay to take a moment to acknowledge that this year’s family gathering is missing a key person. Rather than avoiding the uncomfortable discussion, or circumventing any conversation of the deceased in efforts to protect those closest, acknowledge that he or she is no longer with you. Take an opportunity during the family gathering this year to share a story, raise a toast, or allow a good laugh recalling the deceased. While the ones we lose can’t return in physical form, their spirit still has a presence at the dinner table. Going through old photos, recalling memories of holidays past, carrying on timely traditions, keeps your loved one alive in your heart. Don’t allow your mind to work so hard as to block out cherished holiday memories. Yes, the pain is real. Often times in an effort to protect our hearts we overload ourselves with tasks and keep busy to avoid feeling that pain. Allow yourself a chance to feel. The pain may never subside fully, but allow the good memories a chance to “reenter” your hearts and minds.

So much emphasis is placed on the word “closure”. In a world where we want quick fixes and avoid dealing with that which is uncomfortable, we often look for a finite end to our grief. I call to mind a recent conversation I shared with our staff, in-house bereavement counselor, where she informed me “there is no such thing as closure”. When she said that, I thought I heard incorrectly. How can that be? She later explained, the loss never goes away, the love you had for them never goes away, the emptiness or longing for that person never goes away. But her message was not that of total despair, there is hope. It is not “closure” that we receive but rather, healing. We eventually come to a point where we can allow healing to enter our hearts. We learn to live in our new “normal” recognizing that our loved one is gone, but we are still here on this Earth and have much work to do. We learn that our life, although forever changed, does in fact go on. So the message is this; allow yourself the memories, allow yourself the opportunity to feel, allow yourself the chance to let the season enter your heart. Find some solace in the beauty of the decorations that abound. Each year at our funeral homes my family chooses to add some tasteful decorations to adorn the facilities. While we recognize that “death” and “holidays” are not symbiotic, it is our hope to provide comfort and consolation through out the season. On behalf of my family, we extend our best wishes to our Greenwich Girl readers. We pray that all of those who have suffered the pain of loss find a glimmer of hope during this holiday season and in the coming year. betsy podlach featured at the

lionheart gallery NEW EXHIBITION OPENS ON DECEMBER 16, 2015 – FEBRUARY 29, 2016

Pound Ridge, New York – (November 25, 2015) A storyteller at heart, artist Betsy Podlach’s work takes shape through the beautiful images that inspire her. Richly detailed fabrics, couture fashion and the human form take center stage in her art, playing out on canvas in sensual vignettes that captivate the imagination. Her portrait paintings, Matisse- like and expressive in color and style, celebrate the beauty of the naked body, intimately, insightfully and always in awe “of the way the shapes and curves all go together so naturally and beautifully.” They’ve also captivated a loyal following of art aficionados from around the world including Italian royalty, celebrities, corporate leaders, restaurant owners and private patrons who remain endlessly enchanted by what and how she paints. Tri-state area residents and visitors can see her newest pieces at the Lionheart Gallery at 27 Westchester Avenue in Pound Ridge, New York, from December 16, 2015 through February 29, 2016, during the gallery’s highly anticipated winter exhibition.

“Betsy Podlach’s work is striking on every level” said Susan Grissom, Director of the Lionheart Gallery. “She is truly an artist in every sense of the word, with an original style and expression that is uniquely hers. She puts herself into each of her paintings, literally and figuratively, using her own body as a model to convey the natural beauty she finds in the women and couples she portrays. Her still lives, a combination of the abstract realism of the 1950s and 15th century Renaissance art, along with her landscapes and paintings of animals also evoke an emotional response

from the viewer, enchanting people on a very personal level that never diminishes.” Among the paintings that will make their debut at the Lionheart Gallery’s exhibition is her new Lady on the Couch, a piece inspired by an old photograph from the 1950s. She transforms the original, as she does in all her paintings, creating a painted sense of space and light with color, moving images around, then changing them again and again until it all comes together and feels right. “Everything informs everything else” in her paintings, so what she may start out with turns out quite differently during her artistic process. Inspired by turn of the century photographs and fashion, Betsy has “a vague idea of what I am going to paint when I start but then something may catch my eye on one side of the canvas, which calls for an adjustment or a totally new idea on the other side. I definitely use myself as a model so I can see how the body can move but my images take on their own stories and personalities and they become real to me. I intuitively sense when they are happy with how I am portraying them, and that’s when I know that what I painted truly belongs together.”

A Harvard graduate and a Watson scholar, Betsy studied literature and writing in college, fascinated by the stories that unfolded in the great novels she read. While she loved reading, she wasn’t overly fond of writing. Her paintbrush became her pen of choice and she has colored her way into private and corporate collections around the world by art enthusiasts who relish her interpretative “storytelling” painting style. “I grew up around beautiful fabrics, thanks to my mother who was an avid seamstress, and am intrigued by the high fashion designers like Christian Dior and Chanel, whom she became familiar with when she lived in Paris. I love to add hints of their fine fabrics and fashions in my paintings to enhance the stories my work suggests.” Studies at New York’s prestigious Studio School after her graduation from Harvard led to a variety of art scholarships, awards and grants, including an international art fellowship and residency in Italy, as her natural talents in figurative art evolved into the signature expressionistic style that defines her work today. She has exhibited throughout the United States, France and Italy where her work has garnered her continual acclaim as one of the most exciting visual artists on the contemporary art scene. “I use nature, formal principles, and my imagination to form a personal image,” explains the artist, whose painting technique includes using oil paint and egg tempera, which she makes herself. “My still lives and landscapes are also a creation begun with observation and completed through the process of something new being found as the canvas develops.”

She incorporates the beauty she admires in life –graceful ballerinas in perfect poses, peacocks whose multi-hued plumage shimmers with painted possibilities, ball gowns, gilded with jewels, bodies in all stages of dress or undress, garden flowers, fragrant to the eye, animals endearing in their innocence – to the images she creates every day. So engaging are her paintings that one is immediately drawn to them in hopes of not just becoming merely acquainted with them, but finding out more about them personally and intimately. Bathed in contrasting color and light and emboldened by the wisdom and confident voice of the artist, they have the uncanny ability of becoming real to both their creator and the viewer. And even as their stories become more familiar with time, the attachment to them grows deeper and more fascinating still.

View Paintings by Betsy Podlach at the Lionheart Gallery’s Exhibition, opening December 16, 2015 and running through February 29, 2015, Wednesday through Saturday, from 11 AM to 5 PM, and Sunday from 12 noon to 4 PM. Ever since I hopped on the spiritual path a few years ago, meditation has become an integral part of my life and it has supported me in the keeping of my inner peace and my positive energy. My meditation practice has undoubtedly evolved and there have been weeks when I didn’t meditate at all. And that’s OK. Meditation is not for everyone. What I know for sure is my mind is far more loving and powerful when I mindfully practice the return to my inner center. Here is an easy practice that you can do anywhere and that will lead you to your center of happiness and peacefulness no matter how frantic may appear on the outside. Sit down, close your eyes, and focus on something like your breath, an image, or a word such as “one” or “love—and simply allow your mind to drift, returning to your focus when you need to. Try to breathe in in such a way that you infuse air into the lower part of your belly — slowly and mindfully. Then let it all out at once. Feel the ease and peace within your body now. This simple practice has saved me from over-stressing many times. We always have a choice on how we respond to life. Even when I am stopped at a red light, instead of looking at my phone out of impatience, I make the conscious effort to simply remember to breathe from the depths of my belly…bringing a more powerful breath through my body and empowering me with positive, present energy. This exercise can be likened to brushing your teeth, an essential habit that should be done at least once a day to clean and clear your brain from the myriad of negative and fearful thoughts that line up in our brain.

“ Meditation does not have to be lengthy or complicated. Even a minute of silent and deep breathing can imbue your being with a gentle peace.”

PACKING: THE SUITCASE

My bag of choice?

This isn’t rocket science but it is an actual science. And before I became a jetsetter (kidding, sort of) I never thought twice about what I was carrying my clothes in as long as they got there. This is not a fashion thing- it’s an efficiency thing. My checklist for the perfect bag includes: • One that wheels with a pull up handle that lets you push the bag in front of you OR pull behind you. • A bag that has the option of a second zipper which expands the bag by and inch or so - this allows you to bring home more than you went with. For those of us who like to shop this is key. • One that has a zipped waterproof component- do not tell yourself that you won’t want one last dip in the ocean before you head back. It always happens and heres always a wet suit that causes chaos if you do not have this compartment.

Who You Need to Know in St Barth’s Whenever you travel anywhere there are certain contacts you must make ahead of time if you are looking for specific offerings. For example, I needed a photographer, a chef to book for the villa and for everything else I couldn’t find I had to find the #1 concierge on the island. Though St. Barth’s is small finding the best of the best for these three contacts isn’t easy so here is my GG cheat sheet for St. Barth’s.

Photographer Abigail Leese aleeseimage.com

Abigail Leese Photography

W

ith undeniably gorgeous scenery on every inch of St. Barth’s if you are looking for a photographer Abigail LEESE is your girl. Not only was she such a dream to work with but upon first meeting Abigail I felt like we had been friends for years! Laid back and so easy to work with Abigail was supportive, encouraging and while her photos speak for themselves she is SO TALENTED! Check out a little of Abigail’s background below and if you need a photographer in St. Barth’s be sure to give Abigail a buzz. Following an intense career in the hospitality industry that started in the midwest and led me to Southern California, Chicago and New York, Abigail began to feel the need for creativity, experience and new landscapes. And she began to explore!

Abigail made her debut in Italy in the business of Hospitality Management and Staffing. A few years later, she was hired as the representative for a large U.S. based villa rental agency, and consequently responsable for assisting well respected architectural/commercial photographers SCRIBANI & COZZI with the task of photographing a number of important villas in their Italian portfolio, subsequently visiting and photographed the most beautiful properties of Tuscany, Umbria and the Amalfi Coast and learning a great deal about architectural photography. , my children, were always her chosen subjects, until shortly after her arrival in St. Barthelemy, and her liason with architect Francois Pecard in 2004, when architectural photography quickly became her passion and transformed her career.

A 12-year layover in Rome helped defined her destiny and molded her personality, as if her roots were actually more Latin then Anglo-Saxon. Light, color, texture, patines, odors, and the taste of Italy forced themselves on Abigail like the essence of Art. It was during that period that her confidence grew and she began to fine-tune my photographic eye.

Practical and pragmatic, Abigail can’t deny my American roots. She is modest in the face of the great photographers she admires. She considers herself simple, accessible and without pretense, and tries to respond to her growing clientele of real estate agents, villa owners, architects and businesses with professionalism and sincerity.

Private Chef:

Frederic Bernues

On our last night in St. Barth’s, I wanted something super special for dinner to remember this trip of a lifetime. While the restaurants are all top notch I felt like a home cooked meal and the comfort of being at the villa. Insert: Chef Fred. When I say this was the best food I have ever had I am truly not exaggerating. Fred came into the villa, familiarized himself with the entire kitchen, no questions asked, set up, prepared an incredible three course meal and when he was done it looked as if noone had ever been in the kitchen. Fred was beyond professional, modest and friendly. His food actually brought me to tears (not joking) because of how good it was. Once you read about his experience, you will see exactly why Fred is so amazing but for anyone who ever goes to St. Barth’s, I urge you to hire Fred - his food is the best on the island.

fredosbh@gmail.com

From France to Switzerland to St. Barth’s Chef Frederic Bernues has literally prepared his incredibly delectable food around the globe. During his career Frederic has been honored as a michelin star apprentice chef, it is no surprise that he began cooking at the ripe age of 15. After many years of world wide experience he came to St. Barth’s in 1994 where he continued cooking at some of the most popular places such as Toiny Hotel, Eden rock, Filao beach, and Sapotilier restaurant. After many years of success Fred has now launched his own business as a private chef for villas and yachts.

F CONNECTION I

t is rare in the villa rental business to find a consistently outstanding concierge who routinely bends over backwards to give more service than guests contract for, with more friendliness than they might expect. Frankie is all that and then some. Planning a villa vacation involves a long list of details and logistics. It can be overwhelming at times just trying to think of all the things you need to do and plan. Often it can take the fun out of the experience. With Frankie’s help he anticipates your needs rather than reacts to them by making suggestions and recommendations as to how he can best customize the guests experience. His persistency and ingenuity help to overcome the small and nagging challenges others might ignore. Having lived on St Barts since 1996 and worked for the most exclusive Real Estate and Rental

Companies on the island, he has been actively involved with thousands of guests over the years. His major role and responsibility was to Meet & Greet the guests as they arrived and escort them to the properties. He was the only “true face” the guests came in contact with during their stay. The guests depended on him to guide through the introduction to the villa and make recommendations as to where they might want to eat, activities to plan, and interesting insights that only the locals would know. When you combine his engaging personality and experience the outcome is very powerful. Once you meet him his energy resonates with anticipation to make you happy. The best way to describe him is “The Go-To” Concierge to help you get the most out of your St Barts experience with the least amount of effort.

For decades the very mention of St. Barth’s has carried an uber lux and unmatched sophistication to it. Best known for its curb appeal, and best of the best everything St. Barth’s has made it to the bucket list of many and having just returned from a ten day vacation there, I can absolutely see why.

F

irst, let me start off with what I was expecting and then what I experienced. I had always heard of how beautiful the island was but I never stopped to ask why. I assumed, like most other caribean islands, that St. Barth’s fell into the same category: crystal clear water, pina coladas, and beautiful beaches. But this description is amateur in comparison to what St. Barth’s really is. Luxury at its finest without the air of entitlement is an understatement. Everything from the water you are served (Evian) to the towels in your villa or hotel are the beat that one could get. The modesty of the cars is an unspoken understanding once you travel the twists and curves of their immensely narrow roads you will see why their cars are as small as they are.

O

ne of the most surprising things I found is that a large portion of the innate adoration of St Barth’s is found in what the island doesn’t have. For starters, there is not a Starbucks. There are Starbuck cappaci-

nos available at one of the four grocery stores on the island (in a hidden refrigerated shelving unit) but aside from that the main source of caffeine comes from the french’s love of espresso. There are no stripmalls, amusement parks, or multi-story level buildings. You will rarely see a car bigger than a mini cooper or a smaller sized SUV nor will you come across any sort of car brand you know of aside from the occasional Range Rover or Porsche which you may see one or two of. And for the lucky ones you may even stumble upon the iconic Mini Moke, a tiny sized utility jeep with much smaller sized wheels than we are accustomed to and a low clearance, which were the first cars on the island. The reality is that there are literally cliffs that you could drive right off of it you allowed your eyes to wander for even one second. For all intensive purposes: stick to taxi’s at night! If you are in the buzzing Gustavia or St. Jean walking is best.

B

ut unlike many Caribbean destinations St. Barth’s truly has topped all with their selection of unsurpassed dietary options. And just like their remarkably amazing food, their shopping venues are not far

behind! While Gustavia is certainly one of the most posh shopping venues on the globe the cliche one could associate with having a Chanel shop is instantly put to rest once one realizes the one of a kind inventory that each shop seems to inhibit. Offering a palette of european flair and catering to the utmost of soohistication the suvenier shops to the ritzy glitzy store fronts all have a way of, self-admitedly, making if difficult to not want to glam it up even while on the beach. When catching rays on one of the many beautiful sands in St. Barth’s it is not unusual to see a bikini bedazzled with sparkling gemstones that could blind you if looked at in a certain angle of the sun and seeing a gorgeous, tall, blonde wearing chandelier earrings glistening in the ocean is more the norm than not. An effortless beauty is the common thread among those you will co-habitat the island with.

A

side from all of the glitz and glam, the culture and the people the number one factor of any trip is where you stay. Deciding to bunk up in a cheap

motel versus a lavish villa can make or break your vacation and memories regardless of where you are. And while I am all for being financially conscious there are some trips that require a home base and St. Barth’s is absolutely one of them.

Whether you are

looking to have a calm oasis to wind down at after a long day of shopping and socializing or prefer a few nights in cooking for yourself (or having a chef come cook for you) a villa is a spectacular option for many reasons. Villas offer you the privacy, space and flexibility of quite literally living on your own timeline and yours alone. For starters you aren’t working around the housekeeping schedule or dining room hours nor are you concerned of noise volumes with neighboring rooms. But you also are able to have your own outdoor space and freedom to quite literally do whatever you want. All of these luxuries are essential when traveling to St. Barth’s and that is why we found Villa Belle Bague to be the perfect villa to stay in while visiting.

A

s soon as you open the entrance gate you are whisked into a fairytale like ambiance. A centered fountain bubbling with delight greets you, centered in a courtyard of pink flowers and plush

greenery, surrounded by pristinely finished open aired corridors leading to a private entrance to each of the four villas which have a bedroom and master bath within. As you walk down these pathways you are lead to the open air living space with endless french doors open to the pool area and the dining with full gourmet kitchen right next door. And as soon as you make it through there you land on the never ending outdoor lounging area which is full of beyond comfortable outdoor chaises, sofas, chairs and even a fully stocked bar. The surrounding ocean views showcase Anguilla, St. Martin and St. Lucia in the distance and endless water views for as far as the eye can see.

B

ut the architectural aspect and eye candy that Villa Bella Bague offers only begin to reflect its magnificence. What Villa Belle Bague instantly begins to instill is a feeling of safe-

ty and luxurious comfort while allowing you to feel the freedom we so desire while on vacation to truly relax. Coming off of 24/7 social media and digitally induced comas I am the first to admit that it can often take nearly the entire week of being away to begin to even feel an inkling of relaxation, at which point it is usually time to go back home to the madness. Offering countless spaces to clear your head, enjoy the view, kick back with a book or just ‘be’ Villa Belle Bague gives you the gift of turning off within minutes of being there. You are able to not only smell the roses but hear the bird chirping, laugh at the little iguana running past and soak in every ounce of sun you desire. Every seat of Villa Belle Bague truly transports you into your very own postcard surrounding.

W

hat touched me the most about Villa Belle Bague was how cozy this uber lux villa was. Every single detail was thought of, not one little thing was missed. From a fully stocked gourmet kitchen to bin-

oculars newly hung outside for guests to enjoy the view, to a huge sized pool that offered disco light entertainment (alternating automated pool light colors), Villa Bella Bague had every single little thing of what makes a house a home. The luxurious comforts were in the dozens, from daily housekeeping to a personal gym and private outdoor space for each of the villas with an option to convert the indoor shower into an outdoor one, Villa Bella Bague left even me speechless.

W

hat really sets VBB apart is that it fits the needs of everyone. Whether you want to have your entire family there or a romantic getaway with other couples, it speaks to the heart of all and caters to the

highest level of standards with grace and ease. After staying at Villa Belle Bague it really opened my eyes to the endless uses of a villa and reasons as to why a villa will always be my number one choice from now on.

The best part about Villa Belle Bague is that you literally feel as if it is yours. You develop a respect and appreciation for the little things and never want to leave. And although I left in tears, literally, my heart was quickly calmed when I reminded myself that I would be sure to be back again next year.

ST BARTH’S NECESSITIES FROM

HOUSE OF 29

Bring out your alter ego. Alter ego boyfriend. I just got in the coolest boyfriend jean in Premium Selvage Denim by Cult of Individuality. I am so happy to introduce this fabulous jean line to my customers. This weekend staple is structured a bit like Cults Of Individuality mens jean, but cut to fit a women hips, and tapered to the ankle for a more feminine form. Dial them in with a great sneaker, a cool brogue or killer pumps. Let this cool care free chic jean rule the day.

Stop. It is jean Fusion time here at House of 29. The Fusion Style Jean that is. Shapley, mid rise stretch jeans hug and flatter every curve with slim fitting denim. With this wash you can create the ultimate New Year’s eve look. Create your own individual style.

With their bright, vibrant and earthy style, these Luis Morais feather earrings also convey a playful, edgy and rock-and-roll vibe. The 10K gold feathers are hand-carved and coated with a primary color infused layer of enamel. They attach to 14K posts to create a pair of fun, modern and totally on-trend earrings.

Calling all Sea lovers! I am in love with this stunning Aquamarine pendant surrounded by pave set diamonds is suspended by a soft black braided leather cord. A perfect go to piece with a chunky knit sweater. Casual to wear everyday, yet elegant enough to dress up any outfit.

I just got in the most perfect St. Barth’s dress ever! This 100% silk dress by Banjanan is truly stunning. You can wear this here in the North East with a pair of Wolford Tights, boots and a killer moto or pack it up for St. Barth’s and have a great beauty dress. A stunning black and white print and a wonderfully flowy cut, this dress is flattering on all shapes and sizes. My favorite part…it has pockets! House of 29 is the only store in the area to carry this line that used to be exclusive to Barney’s.

With an understated sculptural sensuality, Michelle Fantaci has designed a quietly elegant necklace with a modern strength. The fan pendant of 14K yellow gold is set with vertically situated gems including tourmalines, iolite and amethyst. The gracefully curved pendant hangs suspended from the 14K gold chain to create a necklace with delicate, demure style. Alone or layered with another one of her talismanic necklaces, it is a perfect piece for everyday.

Fun, cool, chic and edgy. This bracelet makes you wish you were at the beach and brings out you inner mermaid. With Turquoise Acai Beads, 14kt Gold Plated Mermaid and a Mermaids Have More Fun Guitar Pic, this bracelet will make you Wish you were Mermaid.
