Our front cover this month was taken by our daughter Katie during one lovely evening spent in Cόmpeta Plaza last month. We uploaded it to our Facebook page (Grapevine Magazine Axarquia) and within 24 hours it reached nearly 4,000 people and this number is still increasing! Remember to like our page so you can be kept informed on what’s going on in the local area and see up to date information on what our advertisers are publicising. This months issue includes our quarterly Property Feature, so if you are looking to buy a property you will find a great selection of houses on pages 54 to 62, along with some information on buying. The featured Estate Agents are the leading agents in the area. If you would like to recommend an agent or any other advertiser please do send us an email and we will print it. Last month I experienced great service from an advertiser who organised a painter for our family home. The lady who carried out the works was reliable, hardworking, tidy and professional and produced a perfect end result, thank you Finally, this month marks the start of the various ferias in the local towns and villages. They usually last over a few days and include a fairground, stalls and live music. As soon as we have specific dates and programmes we will post the information on our Facebook page. Enjoy and keep reading The Editor

THE DORN METHOD Feel Good Axarquia

holistic, effective, safe and non-manipulative therapy to correct misalignments in the spine and joints and a true self-help method! The DORN method is named after its inventor Dieter DORN. He invented this self-help method already in the 1970ies in the South of Germany. Since its invention and till to date it has been improved and further developed by Dieter Dorn himself and by the many others who have learned and practiced this fantastic method. The DORN method is a soft and very effective method to treat diseases and symptoms related with the spine and/or the joints. It is a form of manual therapy and treats vertebras and joints which are blocked or subluxated. What happens when a vertebra is subluxated? Subluxation means misalignment and is usually caused by a long-term inappropriate/false strain or acute false movements like twisting or heavy lifting, effects of drugs, alcohol, pollution and even emotional stress. A vertebral subluxation refers to a spinal bone which has become misaligned, so that the nerves coming from or leading to the spinal cord are usually irritated. The spinal cord is the main pathway for information connecting the brain and The spinal cord is the main pathway for information connecting the brain and peripheral nervous system It connects every cell, tissues and organ of the body with the brain through a pair of nerve roots that branch off from it. Millions of impulses flow continuously from the brain along the spinal cord and out to every organ and tissue and back again. Pressure applied to nerves because

20 The Grapevine

of a subluxation can cause weakness, numbness and poor performance. Likewise, if nerves are rubbed, stretched or otherwise irritated they can develop hyperactive impulses that cause pain, muscle spasm, overactive organ function and other symptoms of poor health. Usually, this causes pains in the spine, the muscles, tendons, sinews and joints. And since each nerve is assigned to a certain organ, organic dysfunctions like gastric discomfort, constipation, oppressive breathing, bladder trouble etc. can occur. What is the procedure of a DORN treatment? At the beginning of each DORN treatment the leg length is controlled. All three joints (hip, knee, ankle) on both legs are treated by using a gentle pressure towards the particular joint while moving it from a bended into a more straight position. This is absolutely safe, easy and painless! A functional difference of the leg length is usually caused by a pelvic misalignment. The pelvis is the basis for the spinal column and the connective part between trunk and legs. Its complex structure of muscles and tendons makes our upright posture possible. A false sitting posture at a desk, a fall or a one-sided strain are possible reasons for a pelvic misalignment which subsequently leads to severe misalignments in the spinal column. Then it's time for each individual vertebra. The lower part is checked and corrected in a standing position, the upper part in a sitting position. And what makes the DORN method so different to other techniques? In case of classical methods the

therapist usually moves you, pulls you, pushes you – sometimes very suddenly and unexpectedly for the client. This can be experienced as a quite brutal and manipulating treatment where energy pathways and body liquids are compressed which causes a real shock for the body. More sensitive people might even experience a mental shock. The DORN method is applied with the active support of the client and, therefore within the natural flow of movement, e.g. by swinging a leg or an arm or by turning the head. The movement avoids the natural muscular protection when a vertebra is corrected and encourages a natural realignment. With a soft pressure the vertebra or joint can be brought back into their ideal position without any unintended side-effects. Further, the movement guarantees that especially a vertebra is not corrected any further than to its normal (or ideal) position. The DORN Method - like any other method and technique - cannot do magic and does not replace the consultation of a General Practitioner in case of severe health problems! However, it is a true selfhelp method, meaning that the client contributes actively or in a supporting way during the treatment and specific exercises for acute pain relief and prophylaxes strengthen the consciousness for the cause of the symptoms. Additional organizational notes: Informative presentation on the DORN method: 21 July, 12 pm at the Centro Dharma in Trapiche Please reserve your place with Feel Good Axarquía or Centro Dharma – attendance is FREE! DORN treatments can now also be booked at the Centro Dharma in Trapiche See advert opposite. +34 642 740 109

t the moment the rate for VAT applicable for tourist Rentals is 10%. The application of this rate depends upon the complementary services that are offered.

We can take as a reference the following services expressly determined by the General Directorate of Taxes to be considered as complementary Services that are directly related to the hotel industry: · Weekly cleaning inside the accommodation. · Weekly change of linen and bedding. On the contrary, the following services are NOT considered to be directly related complimentary services: ·Entrance and exit cleaning service. · Linen and bedding change service provided only at entrance and exit. · Cleaning services for common

areas (i.e. foyer, stairs, and lifts), nor in the urbanization (i.e. green areas, entrances, and pathways). · Technical assistance for any repairs carried out for plumbing or electrical faults, glass, lock, or appliance breakage or repairs. Following are some examples showing the rate of tax that should be applied in each situation: 1. When the owner of the property rents to a tenant directly and does not provide the complementary services stated in the first paragraph the rental paid would be exempt from VAT. 2. When the owner of the property rents to a tenant directly, but in this case does provide the complementary services stated in the first paragraph, the rental paid would be subject to the application of 10% VAT. 3.When the owner of the property rents to professionals or businesses in order to exercise

their professional activity in the property then the rate of VAT to be applied would be 21%, as it is considered that as an intermediary is involved that the owner is not directly providing any services. Thus the intermediary would be the one to charge 10% VAT directly to the tenant. hen a non-resident sells property in Spain, the buyer is obliged to retain 3% of the price and pay it to the tax authorities to cover the vendor's Capital Gains Tax (CGT) liabilities. If the 3% retained exceeds the taxes due, the vendor can expect a refund once all taxes have been paid. The 3% retention is meant to cover CGT liabilities. The 3% retention does not cover the vendor's 'plusvalia' tax liability, which is paid to the town hall at the time of sale. After the sale, the buyer has one month from the date of sale to pay the 3% retention to the local tax office using the form (modelo 211). A copy of the submitted form should then be given to the vendor or his lawyer, so a refund can be claimed.

26 The Grapevine

Capital Gains Tax Reclaim If the vendor believes he is owed a refund (that the tax liability is less than the 3% retention), he has 3 months to present the form requesting a refund. This step is done at the local tax office. If a refund is due, how long does it take? It depends upon the tax office; some are quicker than others. In theory it shouldn't take more than a few months. This issue only applies to vendors who are considered non-resident by the Spanish tax authorities, i.e. fiscal nonresidents. To be considered a fiscal resident you have to get a certificate from the tax office (hacienda) certifying that you are a fiscal resident. You will get this if you have been doing tax returns (declaración de la renta) for several years.

we work closely with a network of colleagues, both inland and coastal, across the area. We work mainly from the internet but we also have an office base in Torre del Mar where we publicise our properties in the offices of Asesoria AxarquĂa. Coordinated approach We can offer buyers a comprehensive, individual service where we will coordinate your property search for you and act as your main point of contact. How much easier to explain your property requirements to one person rather than repeat the same things many times to a number of different agents!

GOING DUTCH! By Sunset Properties

n Holland (Belguim also) clients who want to buy a house use just one agent to do all of the legwork for them. We think that this is a great idea, saving time and energy. Have a read at our coordinated approach to buying houses. Initial Steps Having decided to begin the process of buying a property abroad, most people start their search via the internet trawling through the many websites operated by lots of different estate agents. This gives prospective buyers a good idea of what's available for sale in their preferred area. The next stage is to make contact with one or more of these agents and to make arrangements to meet up and discuss your particular requirements. Who to contact? How to choose which of the

60 The Grapevine

many agents to deal with? This can be quite daunting as there are often a variety of agents all operating in the same area. The job of an estate agent is to know his or her local community and this is the knowledge that is so valuable to buyers. However most people want to explore different areas before coming to a decision on where exactly they want to buy. Contacting all agents in all of the areas you want to explore would be very time consuming. Many people only have limited time available for their property search so a more cohesive approach is a much better way of using your valuable time. Sunset Properties Spain At Sunset Properties Spain we have a wide range of properties for sale across the whole of the AxarquĂa region and

We can provide you with a tailormade selection of properties which fit your needs both from our portfolio and from those of other agents covering the same area. In other words we'll do the legwork for you leaving you to relax and enjoy the whole experience. Once we actually begin the property search, we will be able to pinpoint exactly what's important to you and we can communicate this to other agents on your behalf saving you from having to do this yourself. Our aim is to get to know you well and to build up a relationship with you based on trust so that you feel confident that we will find you what you are looking for. Contact us We are here to help you and to make your property search as enjoyable and stress free as possible. AXARQUIA PROPERTIES Dierk Pfeiffe combines Axarquia Properties and Andalucian Real Estate

his month I met with Dierk Pfeiffer of Axarquia Properties. Axarquia Properties was formally owned by Sally Harrison who I had the pleasure of working with many times over the 20 years she was in the property industry. However, last year, Sally decided to retire and thus approached Dierk to see if he would be interested in taking over her business.

and finally met up with Dierk. He put a huge amount of effort into understanding what we wanted and identifying just the right place for us. He saw us through all the purchase process, took us personally to sort out our utilities and made up for what was at the time our very rudimentary Spanish.Since then he's given us an enormous amount of help with arranging and negotiating with builders, and all the other hassles of life in a new country and home.He has been invaluable and a pleasure to know – Dierk is not new to Estate Agency he's an exceptionally intuitive and having known Sally for at least the understanding agent. We would last 5 years and owned Andalucia thoroughly recommend him to Real Estate. Originally from Germany he has lived in the Canary anyone. He believes it is this experience of In February this year Dierk opened buying in different countries, with different cultures and settling into a up the current office in Benajarafe merged the two businesses new lifestyle that gives him the understanding to ensure his clients Axarquia Properties and Andalucian buy the right type of property, in the Real Estate and kept one of Sally's' Staff Lorraine Doherty. He then right place, with all the support employed another two members of needed to be comfortable and staff, Annette v. Gotzen and Lorena happy in their new environment. I recently purchased a house in Algarrobo. I contacted many Real Estates before my purchase and received a prompt reply from Dierk . The agent very kindly collected me from my hotel and drove me to see many properties in my chosen location and price range. Nothing was too much trouble for him, also returning to my preferred property many times. He is very professional, personable and patient, providing all the information I needed for my purchase from start to finish. He recommended bank accounts, notary, builders etc. He acquired building estimates for me and did all the translations where necessary. I did not hesitate to give him power of attorney throughout my purchase for banking and legal matters. He kept me informed throughout and on completion changed water and electricity consumption into my name.He was always only a phone call away for any queries I had. I am more than satisfied with the Agent. I have and will highly recommend him and thank him for enabling everything in the purchase to run so smoothly. Annette Graham UK and Algarrobo Dierk explained business is good at the moment and future plans may include more offices perhaps one inland and another along the west coast. Currently due to relationships with other agents and the use of a central network of properties they have access to around 16579 properties. This also works both ways. Should you have a property to market this will be listed on the network for other agents to view across the Costa del Sol thus widening the reach to find that potential buyer. Dierk provides a one stop shop for buyers. Axarquia Properties is truly professional and in touch with its customer's just take a look on their website. See their advert on page 37

he fiestas of San Fermin are celebrated in Irunea/Pamplona, in the region of Navarra, every year from the 6th to the 14th of July. They have become internationally known because of the running of the bulls, where the bulls are lead through the streets of the old quarter as far as the bull ring by runners. The fiestas are celebrated in honor of San Fermin, patron saint of Navarra, although the religious aspect would seem to have taken on a secondary role over the last number of years. Nowadays, the fiestas are seen as a mass gathering of people from all the corners of the world and where the partying, the fun and the joy of it all are the most outstanding ingredients. The Encierro ... The Running of the Bulls The Encierro is the event at the heart of the Sanfermines and makes the fiesta a spectacle that would be unimaginable in any other place in the world. It was born from need: getting the bulls from outside the city into the bullring. The encierro takes place from July 7th to 14th and starts at the corral in Calle Santo Domingo when the clock on the church of

64 The Grapevine

San Cernin strikes eight o"clock in the morning. After the launching of two rockets, the bulls charge behind the runners for 825 metres, the distance between the corral and the bullring. The run usually lasts between three and four minutes although it has sometimes taken over ten minutes, especially if one of the bulls has been isolated from his companions. Chants to San Fermin The bull run has a particularly emotional prelude. It is when the runners, just a few metres up the slope from the corral where the bulls are waiting, raise their rolled newspapers and chant to an image of San Fermin placed in a small recess in the wall in the Cuesta de Santo Domingo. Against the strongest of silences, the following words can be heard: "A San Fermin pedimos, por ser nuestro patron, nos guie en el encierro dandonos su bendicion." (We ask San Fermin, being our patron saint, to guide us in the bull run and give us his blessing). When they finish they shout "Viva San Fermin!, Gora San Fermin." This chant is sung three times before 8am first, then when there are five minutes to go before 8am, then three minutes and one minute before the gate of the corral is opened.

Rockets in the bullring The third rocket, fired from the bullring, signals that all the bulls have entered the bullring. A fourth and final rocket indicates that all the bulls are safely in the corral located inside the bullring, and that the bull run has ended. A fence of 3,000 parts For security reasons, a double fence marks out the route of the bull run through the streets. It is made of over 3,000 wooden parts (planks, posts, gates, etc.). Part of

the fence stays put throughout the fiesta but other sections are assembled and disassembled every day by a special brigade of workers. The role of the pastores A large number of pastores (bull "shepherds") cover the entire bull run. They place themselves behind the bulls, with their only protection being a long stick. Their main role is to stop the odd idiot from inciting the bulls from behind, to avoid the bulls turning round and running backwards, and to help any bulls that have stopped or have been separated from their companions to continue running towards the bullring.

To advertise call 637 028 873

The dobladores Other key people in the bull run are the dobladores, people with good bullfighting knowledge (sometimes ex-bullfighters) who take up position in the bullring with capes to help the runners "fan out" (in other words, run to the sides after they enter the bullring) and "drag" the bulls towards the corral as quickly as possible. The two groups of mansos (bullocks) The six fighting bulls that will take part in the evening bullfight start the run accompanied by an initial group of mansos, which act as "guides" to help the bulls cover the route. Two minutes after leaving the corral in Santo Domingo, a second group of bullocks (the so-called "sweep-up" group), which are slower and smaller than the first one, are let out to lead any bulls that might have stopped or been left behind in the bull run towards the bullring. Useful information about the bull run The encierro is an unrepeatable experience for spectators and runners alike. It is a spectacle that is defined by the level of risk and the physical ability of the runners. An inexperienced runner should learn about the characteristics of this dangerous "race" (although it should not be considered as a race) before starting, and also about the protective measures to be taken for his/her own safety and that of the people running alongside. Not everyone can run the encierro. It requires cool nerves, quick reflexes and a good level of physical fitness. Anyone who does not have these three should not take part. It is a highly risky enterprise. Runners should start somewhere between the Plaza del Ayuntamiento (City Hall Square) and the pink-slab Education building in the Cuesta of Santo Domingo, and they should be there before 7:30am because entry to the run is closed from that time on. The rest of the run, except for the stretch mentioned above, must be completely clear of runners until a few minutes before 8am. What is not allowed in the bull run. · People under 18 years of age, who must not run or participate. · Crossing police barriers placed to ensure that the run goes off smoothly. · Standing in areas and places along the route that have been expressly prohibited by the municipal police force. · Before the bulls are released, waiting in corners, blind spots, doorways or in entrances to other establishments located along the run. · Leaving doors of shops or entrances to apartments

open along the route. The responsibility for ensuring these doors are closed lies with the owners or tenants of the properties. Being in the bull run while drunk, under the effects of drugs or in any other improper manner. Carrying objects that are unsuitable for the run to take place correctly. Wearing inappropriate clothes or footwear for the run. Inciting the bulls or attracting their attention in any manner, and for whatever reason, along the route of the run or in the bullring. Running backwards towards the bulls or running behind them. Holding, harassing or maltreating the bulls and stopping them from moving or being led to the pens in the bullring. Stopping along the run and staying on the fence, barriers or in doorways in such a way that the run or the safety of other runners is jeopardised. Taking photographs inside the run, or from the fences or barriers without due authorisation. Running with the bulls now ranks among the best fiestas Spain hosts annually and is attended by visitors from all over the world.

LA CABRA PELUDA Formally Known as Bar La Peńa Under New Ownership

a Cabra Peluda bar in Archez has recently opened its doors. It was formally known as La Pena and is under new ownership of Gavin and Sabrina although Gavin will take on the major role of running the business. They have had a house in Canillas de Albaida since 2010 but made the permanent move to Spain in November of last year. Sabrina and Gavin ran a 17 room, 2 restaurant Hotel with public bar in Guernsey for 10 years and previous to this a bar/restaurant for 7 years and prior to this an Irish bar in the UK. They are certainly not new to the hospitality business! The move to Spain was to change the pace of their lives although from the start Gavin was on the lookout for an opportunity to do something which could combine business

72 The Grapevine

and sociability, which ultimately was another bar! After a couple of ideas that didn’t come to fruition they were introduced to Carmen who owned La Pena .They were able to work out a deal with her so Gavin and Sabrina took over the lease form the 1st May this year. As the bar had been closed for a while they needed to get in and paint, tidy and put their own stamp on the place. A pool table has been installed and a darts board. Gavin explained all through his working career in the bar trade he has been involved in darts and pool leagues and he is keen to continue the trend in La Cabra Peluda. He would welcome back any teams or players from previous years and would definitely like to put together teams for next year’s leagues. Inside there is plenty of space for both darts and pool to been played and Gavin

Gavin didn’t want to take on the same pressures and headaches of his previous work but instead do the bit he most enjoyed doing, being a barman. So for now La Cabra Peluda is a drinks bar offering free tapas. This may evolve over the months to offering a choice of a few raciones but for now while he is finding his feet he is a pub. When they opened on the 1st June they didn’t want to publicise anything in order to see how things went and solve any problems that occurred before they advertised officially they were open. Gavin admitted that the road being closed between Canillas de Albaida and Archez hadn’t been the ideal start either! However, he is now confident it’s time to advertise and hopefully the road will be open by the time you read this! In addition to being involved in the darts and pool teams Gavin welcomes live music and as such on Sunday the 16th of July from 2.30 to 5.30 Jack Cade Rebellion band will be playing and they will be serving paella at €6.00 per head. Finally, they are keen to work with charities in the area and would be happy to host quiz nights and fundraising events, so charities do get in touch. We wish Gavin and Sabrina the best of luck and through their advertising we will keep you informed how the bar will evolve over the coming months. See advert on opposite page.

LOS CABALLOS DEL MOSQUIN Horseriding in Andalucia

he lovely andalusian horses at Los Caballos del Mosquin are ready to take you out for a ride this summer. Situated between Competa and Canillas de Albaida in the Axarquia region, right on the doorstep to the natural park; "Sierras Almijara and Tejeda" - with a view to la Maroma to one side and the mediterranian to the other side, Los Caballos del Mosquin offers a variety of horseriding experiences.

Even if it is high summer, Los Caballos del Mosquin offers a

range of possibilities for horseriding during the summer season. You can enjoy riding out early in the morning or enjoy sunset from the back of a horse on tracks out in the beautiful national park. For the unexperinced rider, Los Caballos del Mosquin offers shorter rides every day, and for the rider seeking more challenges - besides the daily tours, there are special rides out - like for instance the "BuenaVista Ride" every saturday and sunday. This is a half day ride with a picnic stop.

Do you feel a little rusty with your riding skills? Los Caballos del Mosquin also offer a "brush up" in the new and bigger riding school. Many riders like to combine the two things and that can be a lovely combination of a little more tempo in the school and a very relaxed riding out in the nature of Andalucia. We did not plan for any foals this year at Los Caballos del Mosquin, but our mare Farina looked a little out of shape, and when our vet found the mare pregnant with a possible new foal in July, everybody was really surprised when a lovely filly was full born on March 14th. Come and meet our "Sorpresa con H" - the sweetest foal of the year, and have a coffee or a refreshment under the Algarrobo tree. For more information:

CAMPO CUTTINGS BY LORRAINE CAVANAGH Turmeric and Ginger to Spice Up Your Life!

Large, lush leaves are always in demand in summer gardens and patio pots and there are two spicy contenders that are in many minds at the moment – turmeric and ginger. The beauty and bounty of the tropics is in many of our pantries – things like vanilla, pepper, cinnamon, coriander, pepper, coffee and cocoa. Many of these equatorial edibles are demanding for us to grow in our much more arid climate but turmeric, curcuma longa, and ginger, zingiber officinale, are both very do-able and very desirable. Turmeric is the spice of the moment – I have taken it for many years and find the golden spice mixed with peppercorns and oil is magical for easing joint twinges and minor aches and pains – general old age things! But it is

also achieving more and more respect when used as a cancer preventative/treatment. It gives us a healthy dose of iron and manganese, lowers cholesterol, is antiseptic and antibacterial and its anti-inflammatory properties make it great for arthritis, fibromyalgia, psoriasis, blood clots and even the simple headache. In Southern Asia it has been used for health benefits for over five thousand years and is a standard in rice and curry dishes. However, it is as a natural dye that turmeric is most used commercially; it's in many foods such as margarine, mustard, chicken soups or anything where a golden colour is called for; but it's also used to dye skin and saris! It's occasionally seen labelled as Indian saffron but has nothing to do with the much more costly saffron crocus. Its flavour is unique, warm and peppery with a slightly earthy flavour and its looks are pure summer lush!

Curcuma longa is a tropical rhizome native to India and Malaysia and the whole plant is edible. The rhizomes are boiled, dried and ground up to produce turmeric powder, the leaves make a great wrap for steamed fish or rice dishes and even the fabulous green and white-pinkish flowers which nestle between the leaves can be eaten – beats lettuce any day! Planting to harvest takes about 4 or 5 months during our warmer months, so start now. The rhizomes can now be bought fairly easily at our supermarkets and even small local shops; choose those which are plump with lots of buds. The plants do not produce seeds so rhizomes are the way to go! If growing in a pot, you will need a wide pot as the fingers will spread out from the mother plant in all directions. Bury them about

5cm deep with the 'eyes' facing up. Remember that we are dealing with a tropical plant so it loves warm, humid conditions. Once temperatures are consistently over 20C (which I think we can now guarantee for a while!), your turmeric will start to shoot and then makes rapid growth. Give your plants dappled to full shade and they will be very happy and fabulously fill your pots with plumes of greenery one metre or more high and across. Once established, it is one of the toughest plants (as are most rhizomes) and it will survive, though not look pretty, through periods of drought and too much sun. Leaves will burn at the edges and hang limp when stressed but the golden bounty underground will survive. Once a stem has finished flowering, cut it to the ground to encourage further thrusting shoots. Remember that this plant will go winter deciduous. Leaves will turn yellow and begin to decline with colder weather; let them die back naturally. Then you can dig up the rhizomes; a lot of rhizome growth is made during these last few weeks as the leaves are dying down, so don´t be too impatient to harvest. Most will serve as your crop, a few can be re-planted for next year. If this is your first year of growth, you may prefer to leave your plant alone to develop into a decent sized clump for harvesting next year.

greengrocers. Break them up into pieces, ensuring that each has three of four 'eyes'. Like turmeric, they will develop quickly at this

Please remember that there are several varieties of turmeric and ginger – not all are edible, so ensure that you are growing the correct plant before eating! Our Super Summer Sale will start at 9am on 18th July and run through until 2pm 29th July 2017. Don´t miss it! Nearly all plants will be reduced by 50% – trees, fruits, climbers, herbs, palms, roses, perennials, annuals, cacti and succulents – the lot! Please don´t ask us to pre-reserve, it's not fair to others! We will happily reserve during the sale fortnight as long as you can collect before the end of July. We will be closed during the month of August.

time of the year, ginger usually being the quicker of the two; during cooler conditions both can take months to shoot. Commercially, ginger rhizomes are often mounded up (much as potatoes) to protect and ensure well-shaped meaty rhizomes but gardeners probably won't find this necessary. Mulching will suffice and is a good practice to keep the soil moist Ginger is grown in a very similar fashion to turmeric and is native to around both and provide protection. These quizzes have helped CAS raise much needed funds throughout the winter and spring. We will be taking a break during the dog days of summer but will resume these fun quizzes at the Punta Lara Bar in Nerja on the third Friday of each month starting in October. COULD YOU HELP CAS? The Costa Animal Society is always in need of more volunteer helpers in a number of areas, so if you have spare time to fill, please make contact!

CRONOESCALADA/ BICYCLE RACE: FREE Sunday the 2nd of July: 10.00h: Venta de Palma (Cómpeta) 3,1km race from Venta de Palma to Puerto Del Collao. You can register for this event by calling the town hall (952 516 006) or on the day of the race at Venta de Palma between 09.00h and 09.30h. Organization: Cómpeta Town Hall & Cómpeta Club Ciclista

In particular, more fundraisers are needed to work with our team, people are required to help with the feeding of the cats at the numerous feeding stations maintained by CAS, and animal lovers who could undertake a monthly airport run are necessary to take animals being re-homed in northern Europe to catch their flights. In addition, fosterers are always required to take short-term care of animals until a permanent home can be found for them. Even if you are only here for few months a year, CAS would appreciate your help. For a no-obligation chat, contact Vera on 95 252 9670 for general enquiries. Simone on 619 903 815 can answer queries about airport runs in English or German.

PUNTA LARA CAS QUIZ The Costa Animal Society (CAS) would like to express our appreciation to Mark at the Punta Lara Bar and our regular quizzers for putting on another brilliant season of trivial pursuit.

And despite the tough times, money is still needed to cope with the continuous flow of abandoned dogs and cats requiring help from the Costa Animal Society. If you could donate a little to help the animals, CAS would be most grateful.

Happy Tales At the end of May the Costa Animal Society (CAS) worked in conjunction with TAIL in Torrox and Valle Verde in La Herradura to resolve an urgent situation of ten Lab cross pups that were born to a Labrador in Frigiliana. The owner of the mother was facing eviction for having 12 dogs in his garden and the pups needed new homes by a deadline of June 01, 2017. The three charities advertised the pups far and wide with five going to the Netherlands, two to Germany and one to Norway. Two others were rehomed in Spain all within several weeks time, an amazing feat considering it can take months to find new places for a single waif. Aroa, Agatha and Adam were three out of six strays who were rescued by the APA charity from the Nerja pound back in January. APA was a bit over-stretched at the time so CAS agreed to take on these Bodegueros. After several months in kennels Aroa was adopted by a lovely lady from Norway who flew all the way to Malaga to collect her on June 01. Adam was seen on the CAS website by a very nice family in England who had adopted a similar female from CAS the year before. The family fell in love with Adam immediately and arranged for him to be transported to the Bolton area on June 13. Adam is now enjoying a wonderful life with his new sister in the UK. Agatha has also been chosen by a Nordic family thanks to our sister charity in Norway. She is currently being prepared for her flight to Scandinavia and should be in her new home by the end of July.

Ready for adoption Betty and Benji are very sweet siblings who were left with CAS back in March as part of a litter of five. Their two brothers and one sister found homes fairly quickly but these lovely pups are still looking for their forever homes. Both are a little shy when they meet new people but they are quite affectionate once they get to know you. They are now about six months old, have been vaccinated and are in perfect health. Marilyn was rescued by a 12 yearold girl who saw the pup being kicked by some boys in a park. Unfortunately, when the girl brought the pup home her mother couldn't cope with another pet to look after as they already had two dogs and a cat. Marilyn is now being housed in kennels until a more permanent home can be found.CAS Shop News Fancy a horse ride while helping the Costa Animal Society (CAS)? We are now taking bookings for Andale horse riding school in the shop. With each booking CAS receives a â‚Ź5 donation. The CAS shop is located next door to the Good Stuff CafĂŠ in Nerja at No. 2 Calle Castilla Perez. The new premises, three times bigger than before, allow CAS to offer a large range of quality second-hand clothing, books, bric-a-brac and electrical items in good working order. Donations of like items are always welcome, sorry not furniture. CAS is also seeking volunteers to work in the shop. Please call in and talk to shop manager Karen for further information.

Opening hours are from 10.00am until 2.00pm, Monday to Saturday, excluding bank holidays. The telephone number is 689 314 350. Please note: For the month of August we will be trading only from Monday to Friday 10.00am until 2.00pm. We will resume normal working hours in September. Featured Cat of the Month Millie was born in September 2016 and is very sweet and uncomplicated. She gets on well with people, cats and dogs. Spayed and vaccinated - could travel anywhere, although a local home would be nice. She was rescued from certain death in the pound and is now in Nerja in a foster home. If you can offer her a loving home, please contact the Costa Animal Society (CAS) via our website,, or ring Vera on 95 252 9670. Part-Time Pets Many people would like the company of a pet cat or dog, but are reluctant to make a long term commitment. What happens if I have to return to my home country? What do I do with the animal during my holidays? The Costa Animal Society (CAS) has the answer: a part-time pet! Why not consider fostering a cat or a dog until a permanent home can be found for it? Fostering can be a rewarding experience with the main responsibility being to care for an animal as if it were your own. If you are interested in becoming a CAS fosterer, please contact Vera on 95 252 9670 for a no-obligation chat.
