Proudly supporting Bristol Children’s Hospital and St Michael’s Special Care Baby Unit

Lets get to £1 million and help babies like James...

stayed in for two weeks while doctors tried to diagnose the problem and has continued to receive ongoing treatment and care.

Little James Bryant and his family are familiar with the amazing work of Bristol Children’s Hospital and the Special Care Baby Unit at St Michael’s Hospital.

James’ family are now supporting our Cots for Tots Appeal, which is raising £1 million to provide four intensive care cots and a family accommodation suite for the NICU at St Michael’s,whilst also continuing to support wards at Bristol Children’s Hospital. James’ mum Sophie said: "I don't think we could ever do enough to repay the debt for the help James has had. Our whole family has had such incredible support from the hospital the past 12 months. I think the staff are guardian angels. We are so grateful."

When James was born back in May 2010, he was quickly transferred to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at St Michael’s Hospital where it was discovered that he had problems with his diaphragm and with his small intestine which required surgery. After three weeks on NICU James was allowed home but he was a reluctant feeder and in October his mum took him to A&E at Bristol Children's Hospital. He

We’ve had the Cardiac team take on the Three Peaks Challenge, Children’s A&E skydiving, the NICU staff all getting behind Cots for Tots and fundraisers at the Eye Hospital, BRI & Dental Hospital, to name just a few! As a result of all this incredible support we have raised £85,000 towards our endoscopes appeal, are half way to raising £250,000 for the Echocardiogram appeal and have raised over £620,000 for the Cots for Tots Appeal! ThankYou from Caitlin This is Caitlin Stuart who as a toddler starred in our Guardian Angels Regular Giving leaflet. She is now seven years old and just recently she and her mum came to visit us here at The Grand Appeal office where we took this fantastic picture of her with her leaflet! Caitlin was born with only 20% kidney function and as a result required a lifesaving kidney transplant at Bristol Children’s Hospital. She is now a happy, smiley seven year old and is very proud to be the face of our Guardian Angels programme, which has raised over £100,000 since it started four years ago. Thank you so much to all of our amazing Guardian Angels, your continued support has made a massive difference to the lives of children like Caitlin! If you’d like information on how you can become a Guardian Angel for The Grand Appeal or Cots for Tots Appeal please use the reply slip on the back page of this newsletter or give us a call on 0800 919 649.

Cardiac Team take on the Three Peaks! On September 3rd, 31 fundraisers from Bristol Children’s Hospital’s Cardiology department recently embarked on the mammoth challenge of climbing the National Three Peaks! That meant ascending Ben Nevis in Scotland, Scaffel Pike in England and Snowdon in Wales; climbing a total of 10,807 feet and travelling over 460 miles between peaks, and all in just 24 hours! The team are raising money for equipment and resources for the Cardiac Ward at Bristol Children’s Hospital. The department is the regions specialist centre for the whole of the South West of England and South Wales and provides the highest level of care to children suffering from a wide range of illnesses including congenital heart defects and heart rhythm problems. The team are aiming to make their ward as comfortable as possible for patients and their families and also supporting our current Echocardiogram appeal. You can sponsor the team today by visiting

Home for Christmas! This November, little Jack Collard will be turning three and will then be spending Christmas at home in Devon with his parents. But when he was born he weighed just 1lb & 10oz (750g) – less than a bag of sugar – and had to spend his first few hours in a protective bag because his skin was so fragile. He spent 6 months in an incubator at the Special Care Baby Unit at St Michael’s Hospital and in total spent more than a year in intensive care. On a number of occasions he was also taken down the road to Bristol Children’s Hospital for surgery. On January 14th 2010, a whole 14 months after he was born, Jack left the Special Care Baby Unit and went home. He spent two Christmas’s, his 1st birthday and a total of 421 days in hospital! His dad Gary said, “Jack amazed us by his strength and determination to survive and will forever be our hero!” Jack’s mum and dad, Debbie & Gary, both teach at Kelly College, a mixed secondary school in Tavistock, and girls from Newton House, a boarding house at the college, were so inspired by Jack’s amazing story they decided to fundraise for the Cots for Tots Appeal. The girls hosted a charity swim, (swimming the equivalent of crossing the English Channel three times in just one hour), and raised an absolutely incredible £5897 for the appeal! Thank you so much girls! If you’d like to take on a challenge for the Appeal like the amazing Newton House girls, check out our events calendar opposite.
