Formed little more than a year ago, Jaagar, a city-based Hindi rock band is making all the right noises. We caught up with Karan Pandav (guitars and keyboards) to know about the band’s influences, inspiration and Pune as a live performance venue. He has been playing the guitar and keyboards since childhood. Now 26 year old, Karan and Jaagar have a rich musical background. The band includes Anand Altekar on vocals and guitars, Vinay Kaushal on bass, Agneya Chikte on drums and percussion, and Aseem Dhaneshwar on tabla and electronics. Nivedita Agashe of Mumbai writes their lyrics. “Jaagar is fairly new but every member has been around the music

In terms of music, we love the old school feel of guitars and drums scene for a while,” says Karan. He and Anand compose their songs. “Anand was keen on starting a band and we got together. For the first year and half, we were in a conceptual phase, working song by song. Agneya joined us in the process and we started structuring the rhythm sections thereafter. We have been performing live only since eight months or so.” Jaagar draws inspiration from enjoyable music. “Bands often tend to overcomplicate things. So, we decided to keep our music simple and easy to grasp. At the same time, we

Movie: Tamanchey Director: Navneet Behal Star-cast: Nikhil Dwivedi, Richa Chadha, Damandeep Singh Siddhu

By Subhash K Jha @TGSWeekly

H

ere’s the thing. Crime doesn’t pay... right? It’s not meant to... right? So how come it’s shown to be so much fun in the movies? In Tamanchey, the under-rated Nikhil Dwivedi and the spunky bundle of contradictory emotions, Richa Chadha, seem like dropout students of the cool school. He is a hardcore Bihari named Munna and she’s Babu, a wannabe Lady Gaga masquerading as a borderline sociopath from the Delhi-

Haryanvi belt. Her make-up never falters. She is a ‘behenji’ masquerading as a style icon in a crime-infested countryside. Together Munna and Babu don’t quite add up to an updated version of Robert Redford-Faye Dunaway pair in the mother of heist capers Bonnie & Clyde. But there is something about Munna and Babu. He wears his heart on his dirty sleeve. She wears her cleavage with the surety of woman who knows she can cash it for a life of luxury whenever she wants. Such adventurous women are often very uncertain in their innerscape. Richa brings out the demoniacal uncertainties of Babu in scenes where her made-up face crumbles to expose a childlike vulnerability. Both Richa and Nikhil are effectively tragic in the finale when they play a game of domestic normalcy in a rundown building as the cops close in on them. What I liked about Richa’s chemistry with Nikhil is that there is no chemistry. Nikhil’s Munna falls in love with these women of laughable affectations. Babu is full of ‘angrezi’ innuendos and make-up borrowed from Lady Gaga’s backstage booty. It’s easy for the Munnas of the world to fall for this kind of a woman who knows how to use her sexuality to make her way in a callous world. Babu is the bed partner of a drug dealer Tau. The narrative’s mid-section shows Munna and Babu outwitting the drug baron, stealing kisses and a lot more right under his hawk-like eyes. Stretching the precincts of believability, Tamanchey yet manages to remain grittier than other recent crime capers. The writing is fluent when it wants to be. Tamanchey shows that the nozzle of the gun is not the best place to place your dreams. There are sharply written lines by Shailesh Pratap Singh, specially the ones that Nikhil’s character speaks. Nikhil in fact delivers a heartbreaking performance as a simpleton who flips for the siren and is willing to go to any lengths to get her. Here is an actor, who has repeatedly proved himself to be better than many so-called stars in Bollywood. Tamanchey gives Nikhil and the rest of the cast the kind of unvarnished crime canvas, which actors crave to get when they are in the mood to impress the awards jury. The sharp dialogues are often unsupported by the screenplay that gets borderline implausible towards the end before veering sharply away from disaster with a well-staged climactic shootout. So yes, crime doesn’t pay finally. But it sure as hell provides ample room for filmmakers to explore the grey region without bothering about remaining rooted to a moral ground. Wild and wacky it is an enjoyable rollercoaster ride about two mismatched criminals. IANS

‘I am not interested in minting money’ Jagannath B Shetty, proprietor, Vaishali restaurant, who turned 82 on October 8, talks about plans in the city Anjali Shetty @shetty_anjali

agannath Shetty, 82, moved to Pune from Karkala, Udipi in 1949 after a short stint in Mumbai. He believes that society nurtures you and it is your duty to give back to society. “I had to start working at a very young age because of family conditions. I gave up education at 13 and moved to Kalyan, Mumbai. I worked for Rs 3 a month at a restaurant and then moved to Pune in 1949,” says Shetty, who celebrated a quiet birthday with friends at his farmhouse this year. Called ‘Madras Health Home’ initially, Vaishali as it was named later, is one of Pune’s must-visit restaurants in Shetty’s words. “It is the love and trust of Puneites that has brought us this far. There were times when people would eat two-three dosas in one go, before we shut for renovation. They would find it difficult to wait till we reopened,” laughs Shetty, who is one of the founder members of Kannada Sangha Pune, along with Dr KS Rao and GM Shetty. Shetty supervises the kitchen and quality of food at Vaishali even today. He samples the sambar when it is made in the morning and only then it is allowed to be served. “We are known for our quality and service and I have

to maintain the same. Fortunately, I have very dedicated staff who follow instructions and help in maintaining our motto,” he adds. Recalling the opening day of Vaishali he says, “We made Rs 30 on day one. In 1961, after the floods, business picked up and we started earning Rs 250 per day. Today we make a lot of money but I am not interested in minting money. I am here to give back to society what it has given me till date.” He visits the restaurant in the evening but spends most of the day at his office on FC Road. He gets enquiries on franchisees and branches almost every day. “We are working on it. A dear friend and relative, Balaji Shetty, who is a food consultant, is helping me draw up the manuals and logistics for branches. I was not very keen on the same but now I want to have franchisees just for the convenience of Vaishali loyalists who come from every corner of the city.” Apart from hospitality, Shetty realised that the medical expenses for major ailments like cancer and heart disease are not within the reach of the poor. Hence he started the Shri Shridhar Shetty Memorial Medical Foundation, to help such needy patients. This foundation provides assistance to cancer patients as per the wish of his late wife Shakuntala Shetty. He also established the Jagannath Shetty Foundation and Puttamma Shetty Trust that provide scholarships to needy students, for primary and higher education An enthusiastic golfer, Shetty has been the captain of the Pune Golf Club in 1997-98. He also instituted the Vaishali Cup for amateur golfers. Pune holds a special place in his heart. “It is a simple formula in the city, you get what you give. The speciality here is no matter who you are, you will be welcomed and appreciated too. Pune is a city where you can succeed and prosper despite being an outsider.” anjali.shetty@goldensparrow.com

he Scorpio has been around for, like, forever. Launched in 2002, it marked a massive step up from the makers of the erstwhile Indian jeep, a sophisticated SUV to take Bolero customers upmarket. Updated periodically, the Scorpio has been a massive success for Mahindra. Of late it has been crying for an upgrade, particularly when faced with competition from the Renault Duster. While it may not be all-new, it has been thoroughly refreshed. While the basic body is retained, the new Scorpio gets a completely revised ladder-onframe chassis with twice the strength of the earlier chassis, resulting in better structural rigidity. The new Scorpio gets modern embellishments and detailing like the new grille which is big, bold and masculine. There are new, sleeker-looking projector headlights, with smartly integrated LED eyebrows (a la BMW) as parking lights. Verdict The front bumper too has been + Improved ride, updated, with a nice aluminium handling and interiors finish to the lip, lending more character. Changes at the back - Updated styling may are prominent, dominated not be to everybody’s by a black plastic cladding liking running across the centre of the TOD rating tailgate. The tail lights are now ;;;46 LED, but remain similar to the outgoing model in terms of design. The new 17-inch wheels, combined with the other updates, give the Scorpio a classic, purposeful, and well-proportioned appearance. The interiors have also been given a onceover, resulting in a fresh instrument panel design with an all-new instrument cluster and pleasant blue backlighting. A six-inch

touchscreen infotainment system, climate control, brushed-aluminium accents and soft-touch materials, as well as a long list of equipment endow the Scorpio with a premium feel. Other gizmos like the tyre pressure monitoring system, auto headlights, wipers and start-stop system have been carried forward from the previous model, while also being improved. The supportive seats and smartly arranged controls make the interior feel premium and handsome. The rear suspension is now aided by anti-roll bars and there’s substantial stiffness in the suspension tuning, so the Scorpio rolls less

than you expect and now feels a lot more balanced and controllable. Over the mostly smooth roads we drove on, the stiff suspension and bigger wheels helped it glide over rough surfaces and speed-breakers, without getting unsettled or unsettling its passengers much. Powered by the same 2.2-litre mHawk unit, power and torque figures remain unchanged at 120bhp and 290Nm, but it now feels more refined. And quicker too, thanks to the revised ratios in the new five-speed manual gearbox. The gearbox is slicker, though the throws remain long.

The passenger compartment benefits from a host of new noise-eradicating measures and better sound-damping materials. It feels more refined and is devoid of the slight agricultural feel that the previous Scorpio models had. If your need a vehicle with loads of interior space and effortless cross-country travelling ability in a traditional SUV package, the rebooted Scorpio deserves a serious look. With recent improvements the Scorpio is a true contender for the domestic SUV crown, an SUV with plenty of homegrown geographical pedigree and credibility. aniruddh@evo.in

like a matte-finished plastic item, but it’s plush and significantly better than what you (or your pillion) get on the Duke, which is another pad. On to the riding then, and the immediate feeling is that of familiarity. I own a 390 Duke, so it stands to reason that I’d be comfortable on the RC. While the riding position is committed, there’s not as much weight on your wrists as I’d expect. The footpegs, while rearset, aren’t extreme, and there’s plenty of room to move around, thanks to the slim new tank shape. On the move, if you need to hang off, there isn’t much purchase for your knees, so more aggressive riders would do well to install some grippy tape on the tank. Despite the familiarity, there’s some adjustment needed on the move. The steeper rake means that the front tyre is now more communicative. While the Duke will just hammer through dusty, gravelly shoulders, the RC 390 is verbose about how much (or little) grip you have left up front. It can be a bit unnerving at first. Back on cleaner tarmac, the first handful of throttle indicates that despite using the same engine as the Duke, the RC is more refined. While the Duke is

f you were one of the many who complained that the 390 Duke, while a great performer, was just too similar to the 200, then the RC should interest you. Despite the bikes being mechanically similar, they look entirely different. And as we found out during the course of the day, they ride quite differently as well. Apart from the obvious fairing, seat and subframe differences, there are a lot of little details that add up to a very interesting package. The windshield and upper fairing are a single, transparent piece of plastic. The front turn indicators are now integrated into the rear-view mirrors and mounted on solid aluminium stalks; a surprise! In the seat, you look at the familiar console borrowed from the Duke stablemate, but the handlebar has been replaced by faux ‘clip-ons’, which attach in the same plane as the top triple-clamp. The result is an aggressive, but not uncomfortable seating position. The seat pad is harder, but it needs to be for the intended purpose. If you’re looking at the RC as a sport tourer, look elsewhere or be prepared to mod it, starting with a gel seat. The pillion seat is another delightful detail, once you realise that the rakish-looking ‘cowl’ at the back is actually a seat. It looks

Hair stylist Kanchan Rajput, 23, of Khadki, recalls Deepika's role in Cocktail. "I had not seen her films before but when I saw Cocktail I was floored by the way she carried that character. She was so convincing as Veronica. Even off screen, during interviews and at events, she has this calm and pleasing personality. She is never politically right nor does she do things to please people. I find this very inspiring. Her latest stand against a media firm was the icing on the cake. It gives us confidence and encourages us to be the way we are. She is a public figure and it helps for her to take such a stand," says Kanchan.

HUMBLE AND DISCIPLINED

Journalist and author Sudha Menon has met several actors in the course of her career. But meeting Deepika was a completely different experience. "She is down-to-earth, grounded and comfortable in her skin. She is humble and disciplined. She has no airs of being a star and in no way behaves differently. She is very much like you and me. She reflects that her parents have inculcated in her a set of values. I have a 22-year-old daughter and I keep making comparisons

Author Sudha Menon

Excerpts from a letter by Prakash Padukone to his daughters:

Dear Deepika, Anisha, As you stand on the threshold of life’s journey, I want to share with you some lessons that life has taught me. Decades ago, as a little boy growing up in Bangalore, I started my tryst with badminton. In those days, there were no stadiums and courts where sports people could train. Our badminton court was the wedding hall of the Canara Union Bank near our house, and it was there that I learned everything about the game. Every day, we would wait to see if there was a function in the hall, and if there was none, we would rush there after school to play to our hearts’ content. Looking back, I realise that the most important thing about my childhood and adolescent years was my refusal to complain about my lot in life. I was thankful for the few hours a week we had the opportunity to hit the shuttle back and forth. And that is what I want to tell you my children, that there is no substitute for perseverance, hard work, determination and passion for what you choose to do. If you love what you do, nothing else matters — neither awards nor compensation, not even the gratification of seeing your face in newspapers or television. Deepika, at eighteen, when you told us that you wanted to shift to Mumbai for a career in modelling, we felt you were too young and too inexperienced to be alone in a big city and in an industry we knew nothing about. In the end, we decided to let you follow your heart, thought it would be cruel to not give our child the opportunity to go after a dream that she lived and breathed for. If you succeeded, it would make us proud, but even if you didn’t, you would not have any regrets that you did not try. Deepika, I have learned that you can’t always win in life, that everything you want might not come your way. That events don’t always turn out as you want them to. To win some, you have to lose some. You have to learn to take life’s ups and downs in your stride. The amount of effort that I put in my game never varied from the first day till my retirement. Even during my toughest times, I focused on what I had, instead of dwelling on what I did not. I had the ability to make the best of the worst circumstances and remain steadfast to my goal. Remember how I constantly tell you both about the importance of making your way up in the world without waiting for your parents to pull strings? I believe it is best for children to work hard to make their dreams come true and to not have things handed to them on a platter. When you are home visiting us, Deepika, you make your own bed, clear the table after meals, and sleep on the floor if there are guests at home. If you occasionally wonder why we refuse to treat you like a star, it is because you are our daughter first and a film star later. The cameras that follow you everywhere and the arc lights will eventually fade and what will remain is the real world. Dear Deepika, you are in an industry where there is much negativity, but I hope that you are the game-changer in it. Strive to generate positivity around you even though you are too new and too small a player to effect a big change. You are in an industry where there’s always going to be big MONEY, but I believe that it is important to try to be the best in whatever you do regardless of the money. The things that really matter in life are relationships, honesty, respect for your parents and elders. Material success is important, not fundamental to happiness and peace of mind. I can’t tell you enough about the rejuvenating power of prayers and a little faith. Spare a few minutes of your day to close your eyes and meditate, to think about God and you will see how much faith in His power will strengthen you. In the end, when your career is behind you, what remains is family, the friends that you have made. Live a life that is healthy and one that will allow you to live with your own conscience. Everything else is transient. And remember, no matter what, we are always going to be there for you. Lovingly, Papa (Used with permission from the publisher of Legacy, author Sudha Menon, Random House India.)

Delhi-based artist Ruchi Singhal explores the human connection with nature in her exhibition titled ‘Magic of elements’

Bringing forth

Natural Elements Ishani Bose @ishani_bose

A

“In school, I used to keep doodling. That’s when I knew I had an inclination towards art and sketching”

ccording to Hindu mythology, the human body is made up of five elements — earth, fire, water, air and space, also known as Panchamahabhuta — which upon death, merge into the respective elements to balance the cycle of nature. Delhi-based artist Ruchi Singhal’s upcoming exhibition in Pune titled ‘Magic of Elements’, revolves around natural elements. “Life is divided into different stages such as childhood, adulthood and old age,” says Singhal. “One associates childhood with water and earth, which play an instrumental role in bringing about a new life. Youth is associated with fire, as it stands for energy and eventually air and space are associated with old age.” Singhal feels that everything has a connection with our lives and vice versa, but we are so involved with our own lives that we do not find the time to connect with nature. “Sometimes, when I look at the trees around me, I feel they are talking to me. If we take notice

of the wind blowing, we’ll hear what it is saying to us. But we are so engrossed in our lives that we fail to notice natural phenomena,” she says. Through her paintings, Singhal showcases the connection of human beings with nature. Singhal has experimented with textures and techniques, and uses the ‘gold leaf ’ or ‘sone ki varak’. “I mostly work with acrylics and occasionally other mediums as well. The use of gold leaf in is the high point of my latest exhibition. The 6’ X 4’ painting of a woman is done with this medium. I have used a lot of interplay of textures and colours and tried to express my innermost feelings in paintings,” she says. Singhal is a doctor by profession. “In school, I used to keep doodling. That’s when I knew I had an inclination towards art. But I was good in studies and got into medicine, because of which art took a backseat,” she says. Eventually, despite her profession, Singhal started painting again. “Thankfully, I work in a government hospital, which is a 9 to 5 job,” she says. “ So it leaves me enough time for my painting. I have attended art workshops where

I learnt new techniques. I have been holding exhibitions of my art for over a decade — initially group shows and now solo shows,” she says. The feedback from these exhibitions has encouraged her to work with greater zeal. This is the first time Singhal is holding an

exhibition in Pune. “I have never been here and thus I am very excited. I want to meet and interact with the city’s art connoisseurs. As an artist, I want my audience to understand what I am trying to convey,” she says. ishani.bose@goldensparrow.com When: October 13 to October 19, from 11 am to 7 pm Where: Monalisa Kalgram, Pingale Farms, South Main Road, Koregaon Park

City Celeb Chat Name: Kruti Kumar Jain I am: director, Kumar Urban Development Limited Three words to describe me: Inquisitive, spirited and impassionate I love my job because: I get to be creative every minute Best advice I’ve received: Learn to say ‘No’ When buying something, the first thing that catches my eye is: Aesthetic appeal. What’s your inner animal? Deer, simple but untammable The first thing you notice about an attractive person: The colour of their eyes The perfect start to a day is: Loud music and a sumptuous breakfast with my mother Your current four-wheeler: BMW Your fitness regimen: Power yoga after office, even if it is 11 pm Your food indulgence: Cheese, chocolate and gulab jamun Books by your bedside: Charles Darwin’s The Origin of the Species The first site you visit when you fire up your comp: Pintrest.com Your favourite city: Paris Ideal holiday: To me, even a study tour or summer executive course is a regenerating holiday. In the conventional term of a holiday, the plan is: Three meals a day; each meal must have seven courses; all before and after a deep sea dive. This ritual is very much possible in the Maldives, Mauritius and the Gold Coast. (As told to Barnalee Handique)

ne of the best parts about living in a city with distinct weathers is the joy of changing wardrobes. In Pune, with our crisp winters and two-wheeler culture, we can change into boots come November. So what sort of boots should you get? Functionally, boots are supposed to protect our feet from cold climes, so they extend 2-4 inches above the ankles to cover the lower part of the leg. Design-wise, even

brogues and oxfords can extend into boots. Here are some of the other styles and how to wear them: Chelsea Boots: The Chelsea boot is the loafer among boots. It has elastic at the ankle to help it slip on easily and provide comfort of movement. The Chelsea can be both formal and casual. A dark pair, wellpolished, can be worn under a business suit. Look for a pair that has a sharp, chiselled toe box. Avoid anything overly round or almond shaped, or with a chunky sole. Chukka Boots: Also known as Desert boots, these have a crepe soles and are unmistakably casual. I prefer something sturdier and luxurious looking with leather, or thin rubber soles. Again, avoid clunky toes, bulky soles,

anything with unnecessary stitching lines, contrast laces/ soles, buckles, straps, logos, etc. You can also try contrast stitching for a bit of edge. Jodhpur Ankle Boots: The Jodhpur is a very sexy equestrian boot. The ankle strap gives it some attitude, but its simplicity makes it very easy to wear. These are perfect for a night out on the town but work just as well for a day at the office. Brogue Boots: We’ve proven the staying power of the wingtip brogue time and time again. This is boot that works just as well with suit trousers as it does with jeans, and they only get better with age. The current trend is to crop your trousers 1/2 an inch less than normal. The length and shape of the boots should be visible. Avoid baggy trousers, jeans and anything with a bootcut; keep it sharp, I say.
