This Month in History February 23 - 1695 - German composer, George Frederick Handel, was born in Halle, Saxony, Germany. 1893 - Rudolf Diesel received a patent in Germany for the engine that bears his name. 1942 - In the ďŹ rst attack on the U.S. mainland during World War II, a Japanese submarine ďŹ red 25 shells at an oil reďŹ nery on the edge of Ellwood Oil Field 12 miles west of Santa Barbara, California. 1945 - U.S. Marines raised the U.S. ag on the PaciďŹ c island of Iwo Jima. 1991 - As part of the Desert Storm operation, Allied forces launched a ground offensive against Iraqi forces, subduing them in just 100 hours. 1997 - Researchers announced the ďŹ rst successful cloning of an animal, a lamb named Dolly, with a genetic makeup identical to that of her mother. February 24 - 1582 - Pope Gregory XIII issued a bull correcting the Julian calendar that was then ten days in error, with a new calendar, the Gregorian calendar, named for him. 1786 - Wilhelm Carl Grimm, writer of fairy tales, was born in Hanau, Germany. 1867 - The U.S. House of Representatives voted to impeach President Andrew Johnson in a dispute over reconstruction strategies in the South following the Civil War. 1874 - One of the ďŹ rst ďŹ ve players elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame, Honus Wagner, nicknamed the “Flying Dutchman,â€? was born in Carnegie, Pennsylvania. February 25 - 1791 - The First Bank of the U.S. in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, became the ďŹ rst national bank chartered by Congress. 1841 - Impressionistic painter Pierre Auguste Renoir was born in Limoges, France. 1870 - Hiram Rhoades Revels, a Republican from Natchez, Mississippi, was sworn into the U.S. Senate, becoming the ďŹ rst African American ever to sit in Congress. 1964 - Cassius Clay, later known as Muhammad Ali, became the world heavyweight boxing champion by defeating Sonny Liston. February 26 - 1829 - Bavarian immigrant and creator of blue jeans, Levi Strauss was born in Buttenheim, Germany. 1846 - William “Buffalo Billâ€? Cody was born in Scott County, Iowa. 1848 - Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels published the “Communist Manifesto.â€? 1919 - Grand Canyon National Park was established by an act of Congress. 1932 - Country music star Johnny Cash was born in Kingsland, Arkansas. 1993 - A 1,210-lb. bomb packed in a van exploded in the underground parking garage of the World Trade Center in New York City, killing six people and injuring more than 1,000. February 27 - 1807 - American poet and writer Henry Wadsworth Longfellow was born in Portland, Maine. 1950 - The 22nd Amendment to the Constitution was ratiďŹ ed, limiting the tenure of presidential ofďŹ ce to two terms. 1991 - After 100 hours, the ďŹ rst Gulf War was ended when Allied troops entered Kuwait City, Kuwait, and President George H. W. Bush declared it to be liberated.
