Campbell County One Book Wyoming

One Book Wyoming author Craig Johnson is returning to Gillette to host a discussion of the One Book Wyoming book Spirit of Steamboat! Campbell County Public Library is teaming up with Prairie Fire Brewing Co. for this event that will be at Prairie Fire (601 S. Douglas Hwy.) on June 21 starting at 6:30 p.m. Johnson is currently on tour for his newest book “Any Other Name.” Don’t miss out on a chance to get an autographed copy of all his books at our One Book discussion! The intent behind One Book programs is to create community-wide unity through the reading of a single book. “This program is a wonderful opportunity to create the feeling of a county-wide book club, where residents of different ages and backgrounds read and discuss one book,” said Terri Lesley, CCPLS Director. Your local county libraries and libraries across the state are encouraging residents to READ IT, DISCUSS IT, and PASS IT ON. Craig Johnson is the author of eight novels in the Walt Longmire mystery series, which has garnered popular and critical acclaim. The Walt Longmire series is the basis for the hit A&E drama, Longmire, starring Robert Taylor, Lou Diamond Phillips, and Katee Sackoff. Johnson lives in Ucross, Wyoming, population twenty-five. The final Campbell County events will be One Book Wyoming Wrap Up parties at CCPL and Wright Branch Library August 2; both with Craig Johnson in attendance.

Headwaters: Raw Landscapes of Wyoming June 7th through July 31 The Campbell County Rockpile Museum is pleased to announce the opening of a traveling exhibit from Wyoming photographer Rita Donham. Wyoming’s vast deserts, mountains and valleys have mesmerized Rita Donham for many years. Capturing the light on natural terrain features and documenting where the wild rivers are born are important work for Donham. The headwaters are important for the future of our rivers and groundwater. Celebrating the glaciers in the Wind River Mountains through striking imagery has been successful in generating conversations about ice. Encouraging respect for the “Raw Landscapes of Wyoming” is the goal of Donham’s photographic work. Emphasis on water as our most precious resource is the main theme of the “Headwaters” exhibit. Much of our Wyoming landscape has been severely compromised in the past 15 years. These photographs allow us to celebrate the beautiful visual resources we have all around us, and help us think about caring for our land, our rivers and our families. Included in the exhibit are five photographs of the Powder River that Donham took in late summer of 2013. Donham is asking for your assistance in identifying the specific areas and ranches that are in the photographs. For additional information about the exhibit or the Campbell County Rockpile Museum, please call CCRM at (307) 682-5723 or visit

Quick Tips: Money Tip: If you love your childcare provider, you may not be able to reduce the cost of that care, but you can save on taxes. If your employer offers a flexible savings account (FSA), you can put up to $2,500 a year ($5,000 per couple) into the account pretax to spend on eligible expenses, including childcare. If you spend more than $5,000 per year, you may be eligible for the Child and Dependent Care Tax Credit, reducing your taxes even further. Home Tip: Pretreated dusting cloths are handy, but they can be expensive. To save money, use lotion-treated facial tissues. They work well for trapping dust from televisions, bookshelves, windowsills, and furniture. You can keep them in plain sight, making it easy to dust quickly and often. Car Tip: Taking your vehicle to a fullservice maintenance facility can save you time. Plan on scheduling routine maintenance tasks and repairs at the same time. For example, you can get an oil change at the same time you get your tires rotated, or have your coolant flushed when you get your brakes done. Organizing Tip: Makeup that is kept too long can be a breeding ground for bacteria, which can lead to skin or eye infections. To remember when to throw out old makeup, use a permanent marker to label each item with the purchase date. Lipstick, eye pencils, powder, and concealer should be thrown out after a year. Cleanser, moisturizer, and liquid foundation only is good for about six months, while mascara and eye shadow should not be kept past three months.

It is the week of the summer solstice. Steadily since December 21, 2013, the sun has climbed higher into the sky, slowly at first, fastest at the spring equinox, and now leisurely again as it ekes its way to the top of its arc above the celestial equator. High sun will be reached on Saturday, June 21, at 6:51 a.m. EDT. The word “solstice” means “sun still” or “sun standstill,” a time when the sun pauses in its change of altitude, and therefore, does not alter its rise or set positions along the horizon. During the week before and after the solstices, the sun will change its noontime elevation by less than one quarter degree, indeed virtually standing still in its upward and downward motions. Even a month before and after the solstices, Sol’s altitude change is slightly less than three degrees or about six solar diameters as viewed in the sky. However, there is a second way to interpret the times of high and low sun, and that is by calling the days when they occur midsummer and midwinter which is the way they are often denoted in Great Britain. Since the vernal equinox, when the sun pushed north of the equator (March 20), Sol has continued to climb ever higher into the sky. It reaches its most elevated position on June 21, then begins a slow descent until it crosses the equator again on the autumnal equinox (September 23). At the midpoint between these equinoxes, the sun reaches its highest altitude at its “midsummer” or solstice location. I first encountered this term when I began to take an interest in understanding megalithic sites in Great Britain, such as Stonehenge. I think that most Americans instinctively would consider midsummer to be understood as the middle of the summer or about August 1 when temperatures are peaking, but in reality it applies to the solstice. High summer or the “dog days of summer” are the terms used for the hottest, sultriest time of the year. So will it be the summer solstice or midsummer? It’s your decision because they are both correct.

7 Warm Weather Tune-Up Tips Your bags are packed, your maps are unfolded, and the kids all have their snacks. You and your family are ready for your road trip, but is your car? As the weather gets warmer, there are some things you should do to ensure that every trip, short or long, is a safe one. 1. Do a check of all of your exterior lights and windshield wipers. Replace worn wipers or any burned out bulbs. 2. Look over your tires to make sure that the tread is not worn down. Don’t forget to check your spare also. This is a great time to get out your jack, make sure it is in working order, and review how to use it. 3. Under the hood, check the belts, battery, and all fluid levels. It is a good idea to get a fresh oil and filter change before and after a road trip. 4. Fill up the washer fluid reservoirs and wash all the windows. 5. Inside your vehicle, do a safety check of all of your seat belts. 6. Check any car seats that are in your car, making sure that they have been installed according to the manufacturer’s instructions. 7. Put a safety kit in your vehicle. This should include first aid supplies, a wrench, screwdriver, flashlight, safety flares, extra water, and some rags.

Did You Know: Yo-Yo Trivia June 6th is National Yo-Yo Day. The first known reference to a yo-yo was on a Greek vase painting dating from 500 B.C., but it is believed that the yo-yo actually originated in China earlier. The name “yo-yo” comes from the northern Philippine Ilokano language word “yóyo.” It means “come-come.” The first American manufacturer of yo-yos was Pedro Flores who started the Yo-Yo Manufacturing Company in Santa Barbara, California, in 1928. The next year, Donald F. Duncan purchased the company. In 1932, he renamed it The Duncan Toys Company. In 1968, Flambeau Products bought Duncan Toys and still owns it today. The Duncan yo-yo was inducted into the National Toy Hall of Fame in 1999. In 1979, a new innovation introduced the first “take-apart” yo-yo, which allowed users to change the axle of the yo-yo. The inventor was Tom Kuhn, a dentist and yo-yo celebrity. The World Yo-Yo Contest is held every year in Orlando, Florida, in late July or early August. Sleeping a yo-yo is the art of keeping a yo-yo spinning while remaining at the end of its string. The world’s largest yo-yo weighs 256 pounds and is on display at the National Yo-Yo Museum in California. A yo-yo first went into space in 1985. It could be thrown at slow speeds, but could not sleep due to the lack of gravity.

Pet Friendly Gardening As you begin to plan and plant your garden this summer, take a moment to consider your family pet. Even the most harmless looking garden can hide dangers to your pet. Consider your garden from your pet’s point of view, and you may be surprised at what you find. First check for entry points in and out of your garden. Your garden area should be secure enough so that your pet cannot escape. This is especially important for animals that are used to spending most of their time indoors. You also should be aware of predators that may gain entry into your garden and then pose a threat to your pet. Check for intruders such as foxes, raccoons and snakes. Also check your garden area for bee, wasp, and hornet nests. Even toads can be dangerous, as some secrete poisons that can be very dangerous to a pet’s eyes or mouth. Take time also to check for debris or dangerous objects hidden in the plantings in your garden. Remove all broken glass, sharp stones, trash bags, and power tools. Before you place any pesticides on your garden, be sure to see if they are safe for animals. It is sometimes a better idea to use non-chemical approaches to removing pests from your garden. If you must use chemical methods of pest control, be sure to follow the instructions carefully. Herbicides can be dangerous to your pet if ingested. Some of these chemicals can also be absorbed through the skin. All spills should be cleaned up promptly, and all garden chemicals should be stored in a safe container out of the reach of your pet.
