Strange

BUT

TRUE

By Bill Sones and Rich Sones, Ph.D.

Q A

If the professional dance troupe “Out of This World” ever tours the colonized moon, what happens to leaps, turns, tapping in onesixth Earth’s gravity? Could the show get off the ground there? Book them at the new Lunar Theater - the one with the VERY tall ceiling, because the same leg strength for a two-foot, .7-second Earth jump will take a moon dancer 12 feet up and floating (atmospheric bubble) four full seconds, says Dickinson College physicist Kenneth L. Laws. Just imagine the tricks that might be performed before landing! Pirouettes are tricky, since the lesser gravity reduces friction between feet and floor and saps spin torque force -- about one-sixth for Earth dancers - making for some lazy turns. Think slow motion choreography, with leapers seeming to soar in the air and take forever. Too long maybe the effect might be one of sluggishness, movement lost in time and space and music. Toe-tapping and heel-slamming in the lax gravity will demand a lighter touch, or the dancer may simply be launched, adds University of Illinois physicist George Gollin. It will be tough to keep firmly planted on the floor, in control of movement and direction - no fast-feet Michael Flatleys there! How to speed things up? More friction could help, says Laws: “So that’s why the Lunar Theater stage has a ceiling 30 feet high and molasses on the floor!”

Portraits of Pastoralism - March 4 - 29

Taking Multiple Medications Not Always Risky

The Campbell County Rockpile Museum is pleased to announce the opening of a traveling exhibit from Wyoming rancher, author and photographer Cat Urbigkit. Portraits of Pastoralism is a 20-image traveling public art exhibit of Cat Urbigkit’s black-and-white photographs of pastoralists around the globe, illuminating the challenges faced by people whose cultures involve the seasonal movement with livestock herds (transhumance). This educational art exhibit allows the public to see the faces of the pastoralists and their animals, from cattle and sheep producers on the public rangelands in the American West, to goat herders in Spain, and women milking their yaks in Mongolia. It will help museum visitors to understand that a cowboy on horseback in Wyoming is conducting the same activity as the Lesotho cattle boy, and the same holds true for various people and cultures throughout the globe. The exhibit will help the public to gain an understanding of the vital importance of these seasonal movements of people and livestock, and the threats to continuing this practice. Urbigkit’s goal is to promote public support for maintaining this sustainable use of natural resources, while recognizing and treasuring the human value of a close association with the land. The exhibit features photos from four continents, and includes images of pastoralists from the American West, Africa, Nepal, Mongolia, Kazakhstan, Spain, Bulgaria, and Turkey. The exhibit is a celebration of humanity, with diversity from around the globe.

Many seniors take multiple medications to treat a variety of conditions. It has long been accepted that this increases health risks, as there is greater possibility for drug interactions and overdose of similarly-working medications. However, researchers at the Cambridge Centre for Health Services Research in the UK have found that the risks tend to increase only in certain circumstances. The researchers found that patients taking multiple medications for a single illness were indeed at greater risk for complications or adverse health effects. These patients, who were taking 10 or more medications for a single condition, were three times more likely to have an unplanned admission to the hospital than patients who were taking only one to three medications for a single illness. Patients who had multiple health conditions requiring medications, but who only were prescribed one or two different medications for each condition, were at lower risk for complications. In other words, taking many medications overall is not the problem. Issues arise when there are multiple medications all trying to treat the same condition. In this case, there can be a risk of increased adverse reactions. It is important for doctors to look for signs of drug interaction and complications in their patients who are on multiple medications. This is especially crucial when a new drug is added to the patient’s regimen to treat an existing condition. It may be necessary at that time to drop some of the existing medications to prevent complications. You should always talk to your doctor about all of your medications at each visit, and be sure to ask if any new drug might interact negatively with your existing medications.
