This summer, The Gazette asked readers to nominate their favorite businesses throughout Montgomery County in 50 categories, and over the course of two months, we received thousands of entries through Gazette.Net. All entries were write-ins; The Gazette did not provide lists from which to choose during the voting period. We simply tallied your votes. We’re proud to announce the first-, second- and third-place winners here, in The Gazette’s third annual Best of Montgomery publication, as determined by how many votes each business received. You can also find these winners online at Gazette.Net year-round, too, so when you’re looking for the perfect pizza, a nail salon or a place to get your car fixed in 2015, you can see which businesses your neighbors liked best. The Gazette thanks all readers who voted, and we encourage you to begin thinking about more of your favorite businesses so you can vote again—or for the first time—next year in Best of Montgomery 2015.

Classic Bakery Classic Bakery transformed the definition of bakery in this region when it opened 23 years ago. “We are bakers that do works of art, not artists that do baking,” said Areen Movsessian, whose shop is renowned for its customdesigned wedding and novelty cakes, not to mention its baklava and Napoleans. Relying on recipes created by Movsessian’s grandfather, the bakery blends the culinary traditions of numerous cultures—including Persian, Armenian, French, Danish, Greek and Arabic. What distinguishes Classic Bakery is its “relentless effort to provide the best quality ingredients the industry has to offer,” said Movsessian, who runs the shop with his father, Rubic Movsessian.

Because its beans—more than 500,000 pounds annually—are roasted in Rockville, the coffee at Quartermaine always is fresh. The company’s owners maintain close ties with specialty coffee farms and estates throughout the world’s coffee-growing regions and make regular buying and tasting trips to personally select top-grade Arabica coffee beans. To ensure freshness, each batch of Quartermaine coffee receives a unique “roast date” so customers know precisely when their coffee was roasted. “We roast locally and have the best tasting coffee,” said Quartermaine CEO Carolyn Weinberg. “We pride ourselves on building and maintaining long-term retail and wholesale relationships.”

| HEATING/AC | GAC Services The business might have quintupled in size, and its name might have changed since 2007, when three Col. Zadok Magruder High School grads purchased what was then known as Gaithersburg Air Conditioning & Heating. But the way GAC Services does business remains the same. Tony Petrolle, Bill Wetzel and Richard Biava still adhere to the guiding principles and high standards established when the company was founded in 1970. What distinguishes GAC Services? “It’s the employees we have, the ethics we embrace, and our high standards and commitment to customers,” said Biava, GAC’s vice president. 227 E. We are a husband and wife team who have been in practice for 27 years. Our philosophy is that a doctor has the responsibility to explain to a patient in terms that they fully understand: why are they experiencing pain or dysfunction (and we don’t accept age or stress as a reason), what they can do to correct the problem and what they can do to keep the problem from returning. The word ‘doctor’ means ‘educator’. Therefore, together with our staff, we empower our patients on how to take back their health. We offer a complimentary initial consultation/examination so patients can see if our office is right for them. Drs. Raymond and Gabriella Moss

Ancient practices merge with modern times at Kicks Karate. The result is stronger bodies and minds. At Kicks, certified master instructors—all of whom have achieved advanced belt levels and are exceptional coaches and motivators—help children and adults develop important life skills, such as self-defense, bodily fitness, mental focus, emotional awareness and social interaction. If you are looking for a “fast-paced, kick-butt, bag-smashin’, calorie-burnin’, adrenaline-pumpin’, action-packed” workout, Kicks is for you, according to the company’s website. Its kickboxing classes combine high-energy music with kicks, punches and strikes to create the ultimate conditioning workout.
This is not your grandfather’s concert hall. Sure, you can hear a symphony at Strathmore, but you also can take in concerts by internationally renowned folk, rock, blues, pop, jazz and Broadway artists. “There is a depth and intimacy found at Strathmore that is unlike anywhere else,” said Eliot Pfanstiehl, Strathmore’s CEO. “Here, you enjoy the arts from every conceivable angle and perspective. The programming is broad and ambitious, but the experiences remain intensely close and personal.” Since opening its doors in 1983, Strathmore has hosted more than 5,000 artists and hundreds of thousands of guests at its signature exhibitions, concerts, teas, educational events and outdoor festivals.

It is organized chaos disguised as entertainment. “Like most good ideas, District Trivia started out as an accident,” said owner Nick Groves, who began the Bethesda-based pub games in 2009 to attract clients to his real-estate practice. Today, District Trivia hosts games in 30 locales, four of them in Bethesda. Teams, which are limited to 35 players, compete over five rounds, with four worksheet rounds in between. Questions are progressive and increase in difficulty and value. A Tournament of Champions and Comcast SportsNet Trivia Challenge are held twice each year. Prizes are awarded.

CEO DAN SCHRIDER/SANDY SPRING BANK
Sandy Spring Bank Helping customers survive a troubled economy is nothing new to Sandy Spring Bank. It was, in fact, the difficult financial conditions of the post-Civil War era that led to the bank’s founding. While Sandy Spring has grown, it has not lost sight of its mission: to add value to the communities it serves. “Sandy Spring Bank is an organization that is truly ‘From Here, For Here,’ and we have been for nearly 150 years,” said CEO Dan Schrider. “We are committed to making the communities we serve a better place to live, work and raise a family, while creating a consistently exceptional experience for our clients and employees.” Branches located throughout Montgomery County 800-399-5919 sandyspringbank.com

| CREDIT UNION | Mid-Atlantic Federal Credit Union “If George Bailey from ‘It’s a Wonderful Life’ opened a financial institution today, he would open a credit union. And, if it was in Montgomery County, he would open Mid-Atlantic Federal Credit Union,” said Marc Wilensky, MAFCU’s vice president for marketing, referring to the classic 1946 film starring Jimmy Stewart. Truth is, every penny deposited at MAFCU is put to work in the community. “[It] gets lent to your neighbors so they can open restaurants, stores and businesses to better serve you and your family.” Membership in MAFCU is open to anyone who lives, works, worships, goes to school or volunteers in Montgomery County. Leisure World of Maryland Some of Montgomery County’s most active older adults list a Leisure World address. A community of 8,500, Leisure World was established in 1966 and sits on 610 beautifully landscaped acres. Sure, the pace of life may be more leisurely here, but opportunities to stay engaged abound. Within the gates of this 55-and-older retirement community are more than 100 clubs, as well as facilities for ceramics, woodworking, swimming, tennis, golf, fine dining, concerts, theatrical productions and movies. “This is a wonderful community with outstanding resources and facilities,” said Kevin Flannery, the general manager. “But what makes it most special is the diverse and dynamic population of active adults that call Leisure World home.”

Its tagline says it all: “Creating lasting memories … from our family to yours.” When it comes to transforming a sentiment into an exquisite piece of wearable art, John Greenan & Sons’ goldsmiths are pros. An unwavering passion and appreciation for its customers have served as the company’s primary motivation and the foundation of its business strategy since 1947. While Greenan’s competitive diamond prices have attracted an international clientele, the shop continues to cater to its local customers. The jeweler also carries a variety of designer lines.
