Coal Miner Days 2011 Welcome to Sparwood Coal Miner Days

his year’s Coal Miner Days is going to be a weekend filled with events for people of all ages. The Candy Wrapper and Rock Your World are getting people in the Coal Miner Days spirit by sponsoring the Elkwinkle coloring contest. The Sparwood Chamber of Commerce is hosting their annual golf tournament on Thursday. Test your skills on the par 3 for your chance to win $10,000 for a hole-in-one sponsored by RBC Royal Bank and East Kootenay Credit Union. On Friday, enjoy a BBQ hot dog at RBC and enter your name in the draw to win a BBQ. Then head on down to the Sparwood Recreation Centre with your bike and helmet to take part in the 4th Annual Bike Rodeo where members of the RCMP and Teck teach youth about bike safety. In the curling rink, Air Jump Inflatables will have bounce houses set up for kids of all ages to play on. When you need to refuel you can stop by the various food vendors for a bite to eat. For some sporting action, check out the 4th Annual Bed Races at the bottom of Red Cedar Hill where teams will decorate their beds and race in costume to be crowned winner and receive the $500 cash prize sponsored by Vipond Inc. Following the bed races, the Adult Soap Box Derby Fundraiser will take place at the same location. To finish of the evening, spectators can watch the Fire in the Sky fireworks display put on by the Sparwood Fire Department. Saturday kicks off with the long-running Lions Club pancake breakfast. After a bite to eat, patrons can walk over to Centennial Square to check out the various street market vendors before finding their spot to watch the parade which starts at a NEW TIME of 10:30 am this year. Highlights of the parade include the Calgary Stampede Float and the Lethbridge Legion Pipe Band. There are many events scheduled for Saturday including Kids Fest, SMS Poker Tournament and the 2nd Annual Demolition Derby. Adults can enjoy an evening out at the Cabaret with music provided by Sleeping with Tuesday. Sunday sees the finish of the slo-pitch and ball hockey tournaments as well as the Knights of Columbus hosting the Soap Box Derby for kids. Fitness enthusiasts can take part in the 5K/8K Run/Walk starting from the Rec Centre, card sharks can try their skills at the Senior’s Centre starting at 12 pm. We would like to thank the local businesses for all of their continued support and the many volunteers that give of their time to help make this weekend event such a huge success! We hope this year’s Coal Miner Days will be an experience people won’t forget and will have them wanting to come back for more next year!

ooking for something for the kids to do during Coal Miner Days? Come on down to the soccer field behind the Sparwood Recreation Centre on Saturday. The fun starts at 11 am and goes until 4 pm. Kids can try their skills or luck at the carnival game stations. There will be a ring toss, milk bottle game, baseball bean bag toss, and bushel basket. Drop, Sink & Clink is a fun game where kids attempt to drop a quarter in a bowl of water and aim for the shot glass at the bottom. Kids can try their estimating skills at the Jellybean Count. Luck of the pick is the way to play the Lollipop Tree – kids simply pick a lollipop and check the bottom of the lollipop and the color on the bottom will tell them if they win a prize or not. There will be an arts and crafts station for kids to just get crafty! A kid favourite – playdough and moonsand – will also be set up for kids to just play and get creative! They can go digging for dinosaurs in the sand or plucking ducks from the pond! There will be many prizes to be won for trying out the games! Mat Duffus from Penticton, BC will be performing two shows for kids (12:00 and 2:30) on the grass behind the curling rink. He’s an entertainer that has music for everyone. He tries to get everyone involved and hopes to have kids dancing around, playing a kazoo or some other instrument as well as singing their hearts out. The CU Express Train is back and ready to take kids on a train ride journey. There is no fee for the ride but a donation jar will be present if riders are interested in donating to keeping the train going so it can come back next year. The Bouncy Business from Fernie will be there with bounce houses set up for kids of all ages. There is no cost for the bounce houses. They will also have a ‘Cops for Kids’ fundraiser event where kids can attempt to sink a putt and enter their name in a draw for a chance to win a cool prize. As this is a fundraiser event there will be a minimal fee for participation. Apache Canada has sponsored an event where kids will have the opportunity to participate in an interactive discussion with staff from the Kootenay Trout Hatchery. Kids can check out the aquarium of live trout and endangered white sturgeon as well as have an opportunity to make a keepsake magnet. Kids and parents can learn about the Learn to Fish Programs and Fly Fishing Workshops that take place at the Kootenay Trout Hatchery. Other events may include an opportunity to explore an ambulance with local paramedics on duty and hopefully other emergency vehicles available for exploration. Whatever they choose, the day promises to be loads of fun for everyone!

ogether, the Sparwood Fire Department and the Sparwood Search and Rescue will kick off the Coal Miner Days celebrations with a stunning fireworks show. Years ago, the fireworks show coined the name ‘Fire In The Sky’ and since then, the name has stuck. With an electrifying light display and cracks echoing off the mountainsides Fire in the Sky draws out one of Coal Miner Days largest crowds. Fire in the Sky is organized and delivered by specially trained members of the

Sparwood Fire Department, and costs approximately $12 000. “We do receive a District budget, for the fireworks, but a significant portion of the money comes from fundraising,” says Fire

Chief, Rick Goold. “Every year we have big contributors (several local businesses) that really help out and every evening before the fireworks we have the Boot Drive, where our kids are collecting any

donations that are made.” The fireworks show may seem brief, but many hours of preparation and planning take place before and after, to make sure they go off without a hitch. “We usually have six or seven hours of set up and breakdown,” says Goold. “Clean up itself is done in two stages, right after the fireworks,

Our business is built on a foundation of quality concrete & dependable service!

and a morning crew that makes sure there is nothing left on the field before the next day’s events. Fire in the Sky is really a huge, huge job and a lot of work.” The Sparwood Search and Rescue team play a key element in Fire in the Sky providing the crucial security that is needed to keep the public safely away from the perimeter of firework detonation. “We would really like to thank Search and Rescue volunteers, if it wasn’t for them providing us with security, we wouldn’t be able to have Fire in the Sky,” says Goold. Sparwood Search and Rescue volunteers also provide the public with food and beverages before and during the fireworks with their annual fundraising BBQ. “All money raised from the BBQ goes back to the Search and Rescue programs,” says Ed Ehrler, Search and Rescue Manager. “We have no government funding, so the program relies on grants and fundraising,” he notes. “We would like to thank the public for all of their support. It does take a lot of funding to have a capable and trained

Search and Rescue Crew,” says Ehrler. “We would like to remind the public to stay safe in the backcountry and to stay well away from the banks of rivers and creeks as the spring runoff creates high water levels

Coal Miner Days 2011 Knights of Columbus Council 4455 Soapbox derbies THE FREE PRESS, JUNE 2011

S

parwood’s Knights of Columbus will be running a Soapbox Derby June 12, for children 9 to 14 years of age again this year. This will be the 8th Annual Soapbox Derby the Knights have run. The derby is all about the children having fun, driving their sponsor’s car down Red Cedar Hill. Each driver gets a goodie bag, and a medal or a trophy at the end of the race. We run the race in five heats. The first four heats’ aggregate times are used to set the order of the fifth and final heat. Every car is thoroughly inspected for

safety before racing. The proceeds from the entry fees go back into the community as we donate to local and deserving charities world-wide. In 2010 we ran an Adult Soapbox Derby, with all proceeds going toward the new Sparwood Water Spray Park. We will be running one again this year on June 10, proceeds again going to the spray park. Fun was had by all despite the stormy weather, and we raised nearly $7,500 with ten cars competing. The adults had to use the official children’s car kit. The adult race was run on just two lanes, round

robin, with half advancing. The start was a “bobsled” start, rather than the ramps we use for the children’s heats. Each team needed a driver and one or more pushers. The “entry fee” is a minimum of $500 in pledges. The highest pledge trophy winner in 2010 was Randy Steen who collected over $1,900 in pledges. The race winner was Gene Olson for the Sparwood Fire Department. Our 2011 Adult Race is offering a $500 prize for the team with the highest dollars in pledges, which they will then donate it to a local charity of their choice.
