Boulder Creek senior catcher Johnny Pawling returns to pace what was a record-setting offense last year. Batting leadoff, Pawling hit .424 on the season. He also scored 43 runs and stole a team-best 18 bases. To view more photos from practice go to The Foothills Focus Facebook page at facebook.com/thefoothills.focus
Pauling will figure into the starting rotation along with fellow senior Cody Jones who had a 4.45 ERA in 61.33 innings last year, recording four victories. Jones said that despite losing 2010 graduate Bryce Eisenbart, who won 10 of the team’s 26 games, the pitching staff will be stronger. “We’ve got me and Johnny back and then we’ve added Tony (Blanford) and Garrett Grant and Alex Real,” Jones said. “We’ve got a lot of pitching.” Senior Andrew Parrott, another returner, also returns to provide pitching depth. Real, who has already signed a letter of intent to play college baseball at the University of New Mexico moved to the area along with his brother David, a junior, adding some punch to the Jaguars squad. “Between those two and Tony we’ve added a ton of offense,” McDonald said. Beyond championship aspirations the Jaguars will head into the season looking to earn the school’s first region championship. “It will be a little different this season,” Pawling said. “We know we won’t be coming in under the radar with anyone, but I think we’re up or the challenge.”
Along with Pawling and Jones the Jaguars can look to senior left fielder Joseph Fant, a returning all-region selection, for leadership. Fant hit .394 last year with 27 RBIs. McDonald said his team will get a good feel for where it stands quickly. “We have the toughest schedule in the state the first two weeks of the season,” the
coach said. “We want to play the types of teams that will be playing late in May. I have the utmost confidence that we can match up against anybody in the state or the country. Last year’s success was very beneficial. It gives us something to feed off of. The kids that return got a taste of what it was like to be so close last year. I have to believe that will benefit us this year.”
