1 Dear Readers It’s often said there’s nothing to do for the young, but my goodness, what a contrast to this I saw! When visiting the Hawkinge Community Centre one dark and damp evening, I couldn’t believe the array of activities going on. In just one day, there had been Judo, Tumble Tots, Football, a weight loss club and more. There were people of various ages just chatting, enjoying the centre, while others played pool. So, next time you’re at a loose end, have a look at what’s on and get yourself along there! You can find details of what’s happing on the “What’s On” page within the handbook. We’ve got some great articles for you in this edition, written by local experts, along with discount vouchers towards work for your car or home, so do take your time to have a look through. We’ve got a good range of new advertisers for you too, so whether you’re looking to get your garden ready for the months ahead, ensure your home and possessions are protected or improve your health and well-being, there’s bound to be someone in here who can help you. If you are getting married or have another celebration this year, why not contact Dan Desborough, an amazingly talented local photographer? His details can be found on page 19. At the handbook, we love hearing from our readers, so if you are involved in a club, event or group that you’d like to see included in the handbook; tell us about it! You can phone, email or write. By getting involved, you can ensure that the handbook really does include the information that is of the most interest to our readers. Please do send us your feedback; we’d be delighted to hear from you with any suggestions or comments. Please do remember to mention The Hawkinge & Elham Valley Handbook when responding to any of the adverts; it really does help our advertisers to know where their customers are coming from, and if you are a local business who doesn’t currently advertise with us, why not give us a try? We’d be delighted to hear from you. Welcome to the latest edition of the handbook; we do hope you enjoy it!

Rising sap, nesting birds Spring has arrived! Get your trowel and wellies out and let the garden work begin! In the past month several customers asked us whether it is allowed to conduct tree works during the nesting season. The official nesting season runs from the 1st of March to 31st July. There is no legislation prohibiting tree works during this period. However, intentionally taking, damaging or destroying nests of any wild bird while it is in use or being built is an offence under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981. Thorough investigation of a tree prior to starting works and cancelling a job upon discovery of a nest are two simple measures that can be taken to avoid

interfering with nature. Rising sap is not necessarily a cause to stop work on trees either. Evergreen trees, such as cypresses, pines and holm oaks to name but a few, can be worked on year round. They will ‘bleed’ a little but if the work is conducted correctly the tree will self-heal. Other trees should be worked on whilst the sap is ‘up’. Cherry trees for example are very vulnerable to infection if worked on whilst dormant. To catch them in late summer is therefore ideal.

Migraine – the herbal approach We all know somebody who suffers from migraine. We hear stories of hours in a dark room with flashing lights, horrific pain and vomiting. Those of you who have migraine attacks know all too well how disabling they can be. Migraine is a type of headache, usually affecting one side of the head, sometimes preceded by an “aura” involving visual disturbances and altered sensations due to blood vessels constricting. Blood vessel dilation in the brain that follows causes intense pain. Sometimes the digestive system is involved producing nausea, and/or vomiting and light sensitivity. Attacks can last for hours and sometimes days. Not everybody who suffers from migraine gets all the symptoms and some people are affected more severely than others. The cause is unclear. What is clear is that a number of factors seem to be involved. Diet can play an important part; cheese, chocolate, coffee and alcohol are typical culprits. Allergy testing may help identify problematic foods. Constipation, stress and overwork also contribute. Interestingly, the majority of women affected suffer during menstruation or ovulation, suggestive of a hormonal cause.

How can Herbal Medicine help? The most effective way is to treat the person under consultation and address the causes in their specific, individual case preventing the migraine from occurring in the first place. Supporting the liver in its role as detoxifier of the body can have brilliant results, underpinning the theory that migraine attacks may result from toxic overload. I may use liver supporting and relaxing nerve tonic herbs such as vervain, lavender and wood betony. If hormones are involved then I may consider chaste berry and/or black cohosh. Some “over the counter” herbal remedies have a reputation for helping prevent and treat migraine. The most well-known is feverfew which helps by controlling constriction and dilation of blood vessels. Gingko may help in a similar way. Please do seek advice before taking any herbal medication, particularly if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, very young or the elderly. I welcome informal enquiries if you aren’t sure! . Don’t leave a problem; leave a Will A few months ago there were newspaper articles about a widow having to sue her children aged one and three for a share of their fortune. The reason? Her husband, a millionaire had not written a Will, which meant she only received a very small portion of his estate, the main beneficiaries being his two children. Although an extreme case, it does highlight how failing to write a Will can cause financial chaos for the surviving family. There are many instances of surviving spouses being forced to sell family homes and being left in extreme financial hardship, of courts and social services deciding children’s futures. Wills are crucial. They can protect a substantial portion of the value your family home from Long Term Care fees, they can ensure that a disabled beneficiary does not lose their state and local authority funding. If the surviving spouse should remarry assets can be protected for your children and you can ensure that an estranged spouse or civil partner does not end up in control of everything. Unmarried couples are at particular risk and can lose just about everything if one of them dies without a Will. Approximately 65% of adults who die leave a Will, resulting in lawyers being the main beneficiaries to say nothing arguments and family rifts that nearly occur and very seldom heal.

do not one of of the always

A Lasting Power of Attorney is also crucial. Without one should you lose your mental capacity through illness or an accident pensions, benefits and bank accounts will frozen, including joint accounts. It can take months and a great deal of money to sort things out and there is no guarantee that the Court of Protection will appoint a ‘deputy’ . Remember it’s never too early to make a Will or a Lasting Power of Attorney, but it is often too late! Jaci Godman Irvine, Estate Planner

Helping older people stay independent Information when you need it Over the coming editions of the handbook, we will be bringing you a series of articles about your local Age Concern, to ensure that everyone is aware of the services they provide, which are available to all older adults. In this edition, we focus on the role of John Brooks, the Community Information & Liason Assistant, based at Age Concern Lyminge. What does your role involve? My role is to project manage, source and collate infomation about local Shepway services and activities for older adults. People can then empower themselves, using this information to stay active and healthy in their community. How can people access this information? They can access it via the Invoke 50+ Directory, which is available at a number of locations throughout the area, including libraries, post offices, clinics and day centres and also online. Full details of where to find it are given on page 23 of this handbook. What type of information does the directory include? It includes a huge amount of information, including details of services, medical, social and useful contacts, plus hobbies and activities. There is also a section on safe life style tips. Hopefully this directory will help

problem solve, highlight issues, and give focus and direction. Who can access the directory? Anyone who it will be useful to. It is available to all, and is aimed at both older people, and anyone who knows an older person that it may be of use to. What other services does the centre offer that may be of interest to me? There are a huge range of services on offer, and we’d be happy to discuss your individual situation with you to see which would be most beneficial and enjoyable for you. The aim of my role is to connect people with the information and services they need, and by doing this we aim to promote independence and help older people live the way they would like to.

Please look out for further information about Age Concern in the next edition.

If you would be interested in finding out more, please phone 01303 862364.

Does your fence need replacing? We’d like to introduce you to a fence with no need for maintenance... In the UK, we’re used to uPVC windows, conservatories, fascias soffits and gutterings. The newest product on the market is Plastech Fencing. If you like the idea of a maintenance free product, with a life time warranty, a Kent based company who specialize in uPVC fence panels and gates could be exactly what you need. They offer a one stop shop (from start to finish), with the fencing available in various colours and styles. From the privacy fence range, with or without lattice, through to scallop/straight picket fence, based on traditional fence panels with wood grain affect, they have a design to suit all homes. With ever increasing adverse weather conditions, this product has been tried and tested up to 120mph winds, and has steel lined posts

within the plastic, with additional benefits including: • It eliminates the cost and effort of painting or staining to protect or beautify • That it doesn’t absorb moisture, so it won’t blister, peel, rot or corrode • There is no warping, cracking or surface defects • It is durable in all weather; vinyl maintains a fresh appearance year after year • Vinyl fencing is 5 times stronger and 4 times more elastic than wood • It helps to reduce our carbon footprint as all products are manufactured with 100% recycled products. A typical price for fencing a family home is from £1500 (subject to colour and a site survey), making it affordable to cut all future maintenance and improve the overall look of your garden. Folkestone Art Club at The Grand

The possibility of an Arts Club for Folkestone has come closer to a reality with widespread support from the artistic community and the generous offer of rooms at The Grand for the start up. Michael Stainer, the owner, has been visionary in his support for the arts in recent years. He is an enthusiast who has spent several decades rescuing and bringing back to life his hotel, the finest building in the town. Folkestone has reason to be grateful to him. The idea of an Arts Club has already made some significant progress. Fine rooms offered within The Grand are to host the club initially and the decoration and furnishing of these is under consideration already.

Other venues are also under consideration for the longer term. There will be a bar and nearby restaurant facilities and these, with accommodation, may offered at a discount to Club Members and their guests. Exhibition space is available to hang paintings and there will be a place to display poetry. Writing desks and computer terminals, with free internet, will be installed. The comfortable Meeting Rooms are to be made available for use by the various cultural groups of Shepway. In general it will be a place to relax amidst likeminded people. Reciprocal membership has been favourably discussed at meetings with the famous Dover Street Arts Club in Piccadilly and with the popular Penzance Arts Club. Another consultative meeting has already been held with the founder of the latter in Folkestone. She has agreed to support the idea acting as a consultant in the setting up of the Club. If you would like to help or become a Founding Member please get in touch on 01797 364937 Briony Kapoor
