FROM OUR LEADERSHIP From left to right: Mike Walton, Board Chair, Scott Redmond, Sara Diaz, Bruce Bowen, and Brent Schneider, CEO

Change is inevitable and change is constant. 2016 was certainly a year of change. Even when change does not come easy, it often produces progress and great improvement. This past year, The First Tee of Greater Richmond experienced quite a bit of change. The organization adopted a new name to support the goal of serving the entire Greater Richmond region, to impact even more youth. An exciting partnership with VCU Athletics formed that led to the plans for a renovation of The Elson Redmond Memorial Driving Range. Mike Walton successfully completed his first year as The First Tee of Greater Richmond’s Board Chairman. With all of this exciting change, the one thing that has remained constant is The First Tee of Greater Richmond’s unyielding pursuit of its mission: To impact the lives of young people by providing educational programs that build character, instill life-enhancing values and promote healthy choices through the game of golf. In the pages that follow, you will find not only the accomplishments of dedicated participants, volunteers and staff, but also a prospective of the impact The First Tee of Greater Richmond is having on our community. I would like to extend my sincerest gratitude to all who continue to support and strengthen The First Tee of Greater Richmond. Your commitment ensures the legacy of our mission. On behalf our entire team, I thank you for your generous stewardship. Brent Schneider CEO

On behalf of our Board of Directors, I write to thank you for your tremendous support of The First Tee of Greater Richmond. We take great pride in all we accomplished in 2016: record numbers of participants; greater impact at local elementary schools; game-changing improvements to our downtown facility; and more as described in this review. Every single action taken by our supporters - every hour dedicated, every dollar donated, every event attended - contributed to this success. I especially wish to recognize the passion and dedication of Brent Schneider and his team in always aiming high in support of our Mission and The First Tee Nine Core Values. 2017 is a special year for The First Tee network as a whole, celebrating twenty years of developing young people through the great game of golf. As a leading chapter, we look forward to making an even more remarkable impact over the next twenty years. Thank you again for joining us on this journey. Mike Walton Board Chair

The event gathers boys and girls, nominated by their local chapters, who successfully demonstrate The First Tee Nine Core Values and golf skills. RENOVATION IN THE CITY THE ELSON REDMOND MEMORIAL DRIVING RANGE

Through a partnership with Virginia Commonwealth University Athletics and the City of Richmond, The First Tee of Greater Richmond is undergoing a comprehensive renovation to the downtown facility. Golf Course Architect, Lester George, designed a modern practice facility that will help golfers of all ages and abilities hone their skills. The site has been renovated to restore the 6-hole golf course by reestablishing turf, converting the greens to Champion Bermuda grass, and upgrading bunkers with premium sand. In the summer of 2017, the practice tee

will be leveled and re-grassed and driving range will be sprigged with new grass. In addition, an improved youth-centric clubhouse will enable higher-quality programs for a larger number of youth participants representing a broader range of golf abilities. Once finished, the facility will provide more interactive teaching and learning opportunities for the community, patrons, and The First Tee participants.

“The facility is a one-stop shop with everything needed to learn, practice, and play golf in a place that’s convenient to downtown,” said George. “Patrons can fit in some quick practice or a short loop during their lunch break - and local children who would otherwise not have access to the game of golf will have all of the equipment, technology, and instruction they need to genuinely learn the game.”
