“Vintage & Vineyard” Burgundy Dinner: Through the Lens of Joseph Drouhin Grands Crus
When I think of the wines of Maison Joseph Drouhin, I think of wines of elegance and purity, wines that delivery subtlety and finesse rather than roaring with power, wines that reflect their sense of place well. These are very grown up wines! Drouhin is then a fine estate with which to gaze through the lens of both vintage and site. That’s exactly what this event is all about. Rather than taking the approach of a ‘best of the best’, or ‘highlights tour’ in Drouhin’s wines, this evening we focus on understanding two important Burgundy concepts: Vintage and Vineyard. To do this we have assembled three concurrent verticals – Bonnes Mares Grand Cru – ’00, ’99, ’98, ’97, ’96, ’95, ’94, ‘93 Griotte-Chambertin Grand Cru – ’00, ’99, ’98, ’97, ’96, ’95, ’94, ‘93 Clos de la Roche Grand Cru – ’00, ’99, ’98, ’97, ’96, ’95 These will be served ‘single blind’ in descending vintage triplets (doublets for 1994 and 1993). These vintages have had sufficient time in the cellar to show evolution and expression, yet are closely bunched enough for vintage variation to play a larger role than absolute bottle-age maturity. Given the consistency at Drouhin – between vintages and vineyards – we should also see vineyard patterns emerge over the span of the tasting. If that all sounds a bit academic – it’s meant to be! It is seldom that we get a chance like this, to really focus in, and isolate just two key Burgundy attributes. I shall be looking forward as much as you to what these 22 bottles shall teach us. Of course, we can’t overlook that this is not a laboratory experiment! We shall be in the fine care of the team at Amuse Bouche, cosseted away in a private dining room, and a very fine dinner will be served to accompany these wines – and there is no compulsion to use a spittoon!
