ADVENTURES

AROUND EVERY CORNER Southern Africa has a wealth of experiences to offer the adventure traveller, and some may be found in unexpected places.

From meetings to motorcycles Craig Marshall, owner of the DSA-Group, is a firm believer in the existence of the “wanderlust gene” (DRD4-7R), also known as the adventure or thrill-seeker gene, believed to be carried by around 20% of the population (read more about this controversial theory at www.cntraveler. com/story/the-science-of-wanderlust). The DSA-Group taps into this genetic variant within its clientele with its four motorcycle rental companies, specialising in adventure travel, guided and GPSguided motorcycle and 4x4 routes in southern Africa. Based in Cape Town, Craig has personally guided more than 100 motorcycle tours during the past ten and planned well over 350 self-guided motorcycle and 4x4 tours covering 400 000km around Southern Africa. “The yearning to traverse Africa on a bike is still strong. Further north to Kenya, security is an issue and it’s advisable to travel in escorted groups and in some parts even military convoys,” Craig says. His clientele is mostly between 45 to 60 years old, high-powered businessmen, almost all international, Northern Hemisphere riders escaping their cold winters. They are keen for a sense of freedom on a motorcycle, where they can dress in the latest gear, take a proper break from the confines
