Activity

The program was started by Grant Elementary music teacher Margo Dries in 1974 as a way to celebrate and share the African heritage of many of the students at Grant Elementary. Grant Elementary has historically been one of the most diverse elementary schools in Spokane.

Students learn to dance, sing and drum traditional and contemporary songs from all over the continent of Africa. They also learn about the cultures and history of the many countries of Africa and the music created there.

The group is comprised mainly of students in 3rd through 6th grade who go through a practice and audition procedure. With 6th grade students moving to middle school, it will be 3rd through 5th grade students in the future. Students are invited from younger grades to practice with the older students that demonstrate a willingness to participate and/or to join family members. All students put in at least 50 hours a year through practice and performance. One unique feature of the group is that experienced students mentor younger students. This includes students coming from middle school and high school to join and teach. Students who want to learn the drumming patterns to the dances spend several additional hours practicing.

Each year the Drummers and Dancers perform at many community events throughout the Spokane area. Currently, the Grant Drummers and Dancers are directed by Music Teacher Kevin Cope and 3rd Grade Teacher Joelene Garland. www.facebook.com/GrantDrummersDancers

West Valley Outdoor Learning. The WVOLC currently reaches 3,500 students in Spokane and neighboring counties through programs. One of our outreach programs is the Hawk and Owl Outreach Talks (H.O.O.T.) program which introduces student and adult audiences to the incredible world of raptor adaptations. This program also looks at different roles that specific raptors play as ecological indicators. Critical habitat issues and species of specific concern are also addressed. Students are given opportunities to see live education birds up close and build personal connections to wildlife. www.olc.wvsd.org

TWIN EAGLE WILDERNESS

Connect Deeply with Nature. Find Community. Know Thyself.

We all want the very best for our children. Spring and summer camp benefits kids in profound ways that impact their bodies, minds, hearts and souls. As parents, there is an enormous amount of love, energy, care and effort that goes into the process of crafting a good life for our children.

The experience of our spring and summer programs at Twin Eagles is one of the greatest gifts you can give your children. We know this not only as parents ourselves but as Program Directors for the past decades. We’ve seen thousands of kids come to Twin Eagles programs and we’ve come to see the patterns of benefits that they receive.

Here’s a list of some of the most important benefits that are relevant to today’s children when they come to Twin Eagles programs:

• A sense of belonging as they take part in a process of community building

• Taking a break from technology gives kids a chance to develop different kinds of creativity as they engage with people in person through live activities that engage body, mind, emotions and their spirits

• A chance to reinvent themselves, away from the expectations of school and other related structures

• An opportunity to experience relaxation and time away from overly structured facilitated time

• The chance to try new and diverse skill sets and deepen in existing passions

• The time to be physically active outdoors

• Develop greater resiliency for facing challenge and determination through seeing life as an adventure to be had

• Having fun in a community setting

What makes our programs so special? At the heart of our programs is Mentors who draw out the unique genius and gifts of your children. Mentors who bring kids to their greater potential through adventure and curiousity. Mentors who guide children through learning experiences so they feel like they’re on a journey. Below is a list of the programs we still have open for you to join us this spring and summer. Come join us as we forge meaningful connections with nature, with ourselves and each other.

Celebrate the Planet

Not sure where to start on your sustainability journey? Begin by tackling these five actions, then visit WM.com/recycleright for more resources and ideas to go green. Follow these these recycling rules for a greener and cleaner planet this month and beyond.

• Recycle clean plastic bottles, cans, paper and cardboard

• Keep food and liquid out of your recycling

• No loose plastic bags or bagged recyclables

Reduce & reuse whenever possible. Did you know reducing and reusing are even more impactful than recycling? The best way to minimize waste is by avoiding it in the first place. You can achieve this by opting for durable products such as bringing your own reusable to-go boxes, produce bags, and even carrying a personal utensil set on-the-go. Think critically about the items you the throw away and consider if there’s a creative way to get value from them. For example, an old spaghetti sauce jar makes a great storage container for smaller items!

Throw away less food. Food waste is often overlooked yet makes up a huge opportunity to reduce our impacts on the planet. Wasted food wastes

everything: al the energy, water, and other resources that went into making and transporting it. Reduce less food through meal planning, keeping an “eat soon” box in your refrigerator, and purchasing “ugly” produce at the store that may otherwise be thrown away.

Green up your spring cleaning. April is a perfect time to declutter and deep clean. Be friendly to the planet at the same time by properly disposing of leftover chemicals at a hazardous waste facility. Better yet – grab a reusable bottle and make your own green cleaner. Once you’ve cleaned out the closet and decided what you no longer need, donate your old items, or give them away on a community group like “Buy Nothing”.

Reconsider your daily commute. Before hopping in the car to visit a friend, consider any alternative ways to get there. Are there others you could carpool with? Perhaps there is a bus already heading in that direction. Or, this could be an opportunity to dust off that bike in the garage! If those options aren’t possible, reduce your impact by making your car trips the most efficient they can be. Think about where you need to go over the next few days or weeks, and how you can combine trips. For example, stop by the grocery store on your way home from work instead of making a separate trip, and the planet will thank you!

Here’s to a beautiful and healthy planet this Earth Month and beyond. coordinator.

Project Beauty Share

We are a 501c3 nonprofit agency that provides personal hygiene, cosmetics, and beauty products to nonprofit organizations who serve women and families overcoming abuse, addiction, homelessness, and poverty to help restore hope and dignity in their lives.

In 2022, Project Beauty Share was able to impact the lives of over 65,000 families throughout the state of eastern Washington and northern Idaho including rural and tribal communities. With the generosity of national and local donors to help cover general operating costs as well as donating new and slightly used hygiene products, cosmetics, and makeup we were able to maintain and grow our mission to receive, sort, sanitize, and distribute over 66,000 pounds of products to our partner nonprofit agencies this year.

Without these products many women and families we serve may suffer from poor physical and mental health causing them to miss school and work. These donations we have received throughout the year allowed us to help women in our community thrive. www.projectbeautyshare.org

Large Animal Rescue Groups

Finding homes for large animals can be challenging. Animal rescue groups like the ones listed below ensure that each rescued individual leads an enriching life. Thanks for supporting their cause.

2nd Chance Ranch

All our animals are rescued, abused, neglected, or unwanted. Some in need of medical attention and owners weren’t able to afford or they just needed a new home due to moving or an owner passed away do to cancer or other illness or even old age. Sometimes it is just the wrong environment for that animal. A unwanted family pet and/or kids have grown and gone. We give them love, warm touches, attention, food, vitamins, and a nurturing forever home. Each animal has a unique story to share about their recovery or their old situation. 2ndchanceranchrescue.com
