“Fairfield ISD is left with $11.1 million. Luminant/Big Brown is disputing their taxable value and is refusing to pay (withhold) $2.3 million in taxes to Fairfield ISD. This means rather than having $11.1 million to spend we only have $8.8 million to spend. “This winds up being around a 20 percent cut in tax funding. Can you imagine if your business lost 20 percent of its revenue or your own personal paycheck was reduced by 20 percent? This is what is happening to FISD.” One of the district’s major concerns is a bond payment due in August of $412,900,

and just $158,000 in reserves. “The only way to make August bond payment money is taking from instructional funds. This is money allocated for day-to-day instruction,” Ryan said. “It’s big. We’re not going to be closing doors to the school district but we will be serious about every penny we spend. We’re now going to use money in our saving account to assist with day-to-day operations.” Freestone County and hospital district officials could not be reached for comment on the impact to their respective budgets.
