From the Editor Hi my lovelies welcome to the 8th year of The Eye Malawi. Before I get down to the nitty gritty with naughty people, I would really like to thank all those advertisers and contributors. One of these very people, Harrison Simfukwe brings us the lead on one of Malawi’s friendliest and rather pretty birds, the African PiedWagtail. A regular contributor, stay tuned. Pierre Moorsom, as always you brought to the table your interest and knowledge in diverse subjects in part 2 of Bio-mimicry. Wicked carry on my lovely, expecting you to write on dentistry next issue Right, down to business with scallywags.. Page 102

belong to the order Passeriformes, the largest order of birds that contain more than half of all species. This group forms one of the most spectacularly diverse territorial vertebrate orders; with around 5,400 known species and it is roughly twice as diverse as the largest of the mammal order, Rodentia. Passerines are found on all continents except Antarctica. Most passerines lay colored eggs, in contrast to nonpasserines, which lay mostly white eggs, except in some ground nesting groups such as nightjars where camouflage is necessary. It has been suggested that it may flush up prey, or that it may signal submissiveness to other wagtails. Recent studies have suggested instead that it is a signal of vigilance that may aid to deter potential predators. Group : Aves (birds) Order: Passeriformes

species out of which 456 are resident while 94 are intra-African migrants of regular occurrence, most of which are known or suspected to breed. The African Pied Wagtail is one of the residents in Malawi. This bird species is amongst the boldly patterned long-tailed birds that typically bob their tails as they walk. The nearly constant tail wagging is their most conspicuous behaviour, a trait that has given the birds their common name. By

Passerines are true perching birds or less accurately as songbirds, having four toes, with three directed forward and one backward. The order includes such birds as finches and warblers among others. The group gets its name from the Latin name for the

Further to that, the discovery of subsequent fossils from around the world has provided clearer evidence with regard to the modern diversity of Passerida genera. 3.0 The taxonomic species of motacillidae family There are so far about thirteen species of wagtails globally belonging to the Motacillidae widely distributed around the world except Antarctica. Birds as messenger

Among some tribes in Malawi, the

especially those from Chitipa District such as the Mambwe and Namwanga as well as the Lambya believe that when the African Pied Wagtail perches on the roof of a house, it has brought some message. The message might be good or bad. For example, if the bird

It generally prefers wide rivers and other water bodies with sandy banks or scattered boulders, but it may also occupy rocky coastlines. It is also common in man-made habitats, such as parks, playing fields, golf courses, suburban gardens and sewage works. The geographical range shows that the bird is native to the following African countries;- Angola (Angola); Benin; Botswana; Burundi; Cameroon; Central African Republic; Chad; Congo; Congo, The Democratic Republic of the; Côte d’Ivoire; Egypt; Equatorial Guinea; Eritrea; Ethiopia; Gabon; Ghana; Guinea; Guinea-Bissau; Kenya; Lesotho; Liberia; Malawi; Mali; Mozambique; Namibia; Niger; Nigeria; Rwanda; Senegal; Sierra Leone; Somalia; South Africa; South Sudan; Sudan; Swaziland; Tanzania, Togo; Uganda; Zambia; Zimbabwe. 7.0

also believed that when the bird perches on roof and is singing while facing towards the direction of the way (road or path), this is a message that a visitor is on his/her way coming, hence the need to prepare for that visitor. 7.3

Birds with power

The African Pied Wagtail is among birds with power. For example, different ethnic communities in Chitipa associate this bird with the Mtambo’s clan Chieftaincy whose headquarters is in Zambia covering the districts of Isoka, Nakonde, Mpika, Kasama and Mbala; and Chitipa District in Malawi. The Mtambo’s chieftaincy title is Katyetye. This is also what prompted the writer to conduct a research to

addition, I would like to thank Alliance One for donating four motorbikes to Kasungu National Park, which are absolutely crucial for getting things done. One of our supporters in South Africa is even biking 900 kms and asking people to sponsor him for anti-poaching in Kasungu.

By Matthieu Destremau

The last time I wrote an article for The Eye, I was in the middle of the bush, spending time in tents or on patrol… This time I’d like to share another aspect of my job with you; writing from an office in South Africa. This may come as a surprise to some of you, but law enforcement in a National Park doesn’t just consist of walking in the bush with weapons (although I have to admit it’s my favorite part). In our goal to protect the park, we need to use all the technology and tactics we can afford. For obvious reasons I won’t be sharing our tactics as we are engaged in an ever changing game of cat and mouse with poachers. So why am I in South Africa? We were very lucky to have a generous donor, who came to see us in Kasungu and gave us enough money to buy our own drone! For those of you who don’t know what that is; a drone is a miniature remote-controlled pilotless aircraft. I’m in South Africa because today is my first day of training, of learning how to fly a drone and to use its capabilities in the best possible way in anti-poaching operations. A drone is a remarkable tool, even on this first day I am impressed to see what can be done in the field with a thermal camera. We can

34

detect a human being in the bush from the air, follow them and send the GPS coordinates to the scouts on the ground. There is no way a poacher can hide from it. This drone can operate during the day, using a high tech camera, as well as at night with the thermal. It will still take some time before I know all the ins and outs of flying the drone properly. Luckily for Shadowview, the organization providing the training, as well as my company (Association d’appui à la Protection de la Biosphère (APB)), I’m learning with practice drones, so I can afford to crash them once in a while… Many things have changed since the time I started working in Kasungu. This is one of the sources of our motivation – no matter how long it takes to have progress in this long and hard war for conservation - with enough dedication and support we can make a difference. For example; with the help of volunteers and APB we now have a lot of uniforms and different equipment for the scouts. This was a very high priority on our list. We are now moving on to a project of using non-lethal weapons as well as looking into the possibilities of having anti-poaching dogs. We are also receiving a lot of support from the Kasungu Elephants Foundation, and we are hoping to get a new car in a month. In

www.theeyemw.com

In the past few months we have done many successful operations leading to the arrest of poachers. This was achieved by combining foot patrols, air control, car and motorcycle patrols and community outreach patrols. We have also used our expanding intelligence network to our advantage. Although there is still a lot of work to do, the commitment of and cooperation with the DNPW park staff is great, and I am thankful for that. Adding the drone to our tools is a great opportunity to do even better. However, there is a downside of my job… I recently received an alarming phone call from Remke, the director of Kasungu Elephants Foundation. She told me one of our elephants had been shot and was standing in front of the lodge. I grabbed my radio and me and one of my volunteers ran over there to take a look.

After all this time I still find it difficult to understand when people, including Malawians, come to the lodge and ask us for bushmeat. In fact, recently a couple wanted me to provide them with bush meat for their wedding. In some villages, poachers are regarded as heroes. When we arrest poachers, we are attacked for it. It is time for people to understand that poaching is a crime, that buying bushmeat is a crime, and that it is destroying Malawi’s National Parks, that for such an important part of Malawi’s tourism industry and economy. Illegal wildlife trade has recently been named one of the largest illegal trades worldwide, next to drugs and weapons. It has been connected to terrorism and extremist networks, and should be taken seriously. However, this is not something we can do as an anti-poaching unit, or as researchers. We need your input. And we all need to make each other aware Cont. on pg 36

What a shock when I saw this poor young female elephant, which we had named Kulimba, limping and suffering. I contacted Lilongwe Wildlife Centre straight away, to see if they could send their Wildlife Emergency Response Unit over. The next morning the vet arrived, but unfortunately the verdict was that there was not much we could do at this stage, except keeping an eye on her and monitoring her progress. From that day on we kept track of her every movement, and she would stick around the lodge. Occasionally her elephant friends and family would visit to support her. Two weeks after she was shot, Kulimba passed away. After her death we discovered that the bullet the poacher had used had irreparably damaged the bones in her shoulder. She had no chance of surviving. Last year we lost elephants, this year we are still losing them. With only around 50 left every poaching casualty is a threat to Kasungu’s elephant population, and with that to the tourist appeal of Kasungu National Park.

Cont. from pg 35

that the tourism value of an elephant to the Malawian economy is around 1.6 million US dollars, and that a live elephant is worth around 76 times more alive, than if his tusks are sold when he’s dead. In addition, when he’s alive the tourism revenue will go to Malawi and its people. If the tusks are sold it disappears on the black market, probably to Asia. So yes, we are fighting for the animals, and we are fighting for the trees, but in the end we are fighting for you, for your children and their children. What will happen to them if there is no tree or animal left in the country? Many people ask me how I am able to continue, and how I can maintain my morale. And, between you and me, I don’t. I’m only human, and having a dying elephant on your doorstep is guaranteed to get you down. But the best answer I can give is that I am still inspired by people who do take this seriously. By those who want to help us, by volunteering, giving advice, donating money or time. These people give me strength and faith to keep holding the line. As Napoleon said: “Impossible is not French”. So we’re holding the line until enough people understand why it is important to conserve

36

wildlife, why it is crucial for us and the future generation. With small steps, we can make it together. Don’t let this go. Only when the last tree has been cut down, Only when the last river has been poisoned, Only when the last fish has been caught, Only then will you find that money cannot be eaten. - Native American Cree Tribe Prophecy Want to help? • One of the ways you can help is to ‘’adopt an elephant’’ at www.kasunguelephants. com. By adopting an elephant you are not only contributing to anti-poaching but also to research of these magnificent animals. • Volunteer your time for the Anti-Poaching Unit. We only accept volunteers with relevant military experience. Interested? Please contact me on matt.apb@outlook.com • Study elephants. Maybe you can help Remke to monitor the elephants and study their behavior. Once the signs of rabies begin there is no hope of survival and families in Blantyre are forced to go through the harrowing experience of watching a loved one die of this tragic disease every year. In May 2015 Mission Rabies, in partnership with the Blantyre SPCA and the Department for Animal Health and Livestock Development (DAHLD), started a project in Blantyre to make this a thing of the past. The Queen Elizabeth Hospital has reported high numbers of child deaths from rabies in recent years, however the true scale of the problem is not known with many deaths from the disease going unreported. Rabies circulates within the dog population and is most often transmitted to people through a bite from a rabid dog. Many countries have tried to control the problem through mass killing of dogs, however this is not effective and rabies inevitably returns. The secret to eliminating this deadly disease is through maintaining a vaccinated dog population. The higher the vaccination coverage, the lower the risk of rabies taking hold in the dog population, so every vaccinated dog serves to protect the community against rabies. Mission Rabies, sponsored by Dogs Trust, is a UK-based charity which has been working to develop effective methods for the mass vaccination of dogs in India, where more people die of rabies than anywhere else in the world. Over the past 18 months Mission Rabies teams have vaccinated more than 150,000 dogs and in 2015, projects were also launched in Africa. Blantyre was identified as the first location to demonstrate mass vaccination methods that could then be applied to other areas of Malawi and Africa.

48

The government have been working hard to fight back against rabies through annual dog vaccination campaigns, however there are many challenges including logistics, limited resources and a huge dog population. Mission Rabies aims to support and build on these previous efforts to ultimately make Blantyre a rabies free city. A city-wide dog vaccination and education campaign was launched in May on a scale never before seen in Blantyre. Weekend vaccination stations were advertised for people to bring their dogs for free vaccination whilst education teams descended on schools to teach children ways to stay safe around dogs and what to do if they get bitten. By the end of May over 30,000 dogs were vaccinated and more than 40,000 children received a Mission Rabies lesson at school. With human vaccine being in short supply and not accessible for many children in poorer communities, the message of thoroughly washing a dog bite wound immediately with soap and water followed by spirit could be the difference between life and death.

TNM 2

The Blantyre vaccination campaign will be repeated annually, but the success of the programme relies on the continued support of the community, particularly by bringing dogs for vaccination to the static point vaccination stations on the advertised days and encouraging their neighbours to do the same. Mission Rabies would like to extend a huge thank you to the BSPCA and DAHLD, without whom the campaign would not have been possible and we look forward to continuing to work closely together towards a rabies free Blantyre.

National Parks

National Parks anywhere else in the world. Boats are available for hire and the fish will feed directly from the hand. Away from the Lake, the park has baboons, antelope and hyrax and of course, there is a great variety of birdlife including fish eagles, cormorants and hamerkops.

miles (3200 sq km). It extends across the great plateaux which is essentially a granitic dome and its environment is like none other in Africa. The name, Nyika, means “where the water comes from” and it is, indeed, one of Malawi’s most important catchment areas. The rolling scenery is at its best in the rainy season when over 200 types of orchid are in flower. The grasslands of Nyika are also rich in wildflowers in other seasons.

Lengwe National Park

This park is 350 sq miles (900 sq km) in extent at only an hours drive (80 km) from Blantyre. The vegetation is thicket, with some deciduous woodland and denser tree growth along the stream courses. In the eastern area a network of driveable tracks will lead you through the 80 sq km of park that is accessible for game viewing. Low hills, outcrops of sandstone, adorn the west of the park.

Kasungu National Park

In the west of the central region, bordering Zambia, is Kasungu National Park, an 800 sq mile (2100 sq km) area of natural woodland and bush with occasional stretches of more open grass. Poaching has reduced the number of some species of animals but, contrary to rumours in some quarters, there is still plenty of wildlife to be seen. Elephants and antelopes are common, as are small herds of buffalo and zebra. The cats include both lions and leopards. Inhabiting the bush are hyenas, wild dogs, servals and jackals. There is a significant number of hippos in the lake at Lifupa and as elsewhere in Malawi, the birdwatcher is well catered for This is a park which is relatively easy to drive around. Access to the park has been greatly improved in recent years and it is relatively easy to reach from Lilongwe (approx. 100 miles/160km), Blantyre 450Km

Lengwe is quite arid outside the rainy season and many of the water courses become dry sandy channels. This aids game viewing because it forces the animals to use the few pools that are permanent supplies of water. There are hides and man-made pools in the eastern area of the park just a short distance from the main gate. The advantages of the hides are that one may see a mix of wildlife together at the water-hole. The park is the most northern place in the world to find indigenous Nyala. Other antelope like the magnificent kudu also roam the park as do common duiker, the small Livingstone’s suni, bushbuck and impala. Baboon, vervet and blue monkeys, bush-baby, warthog, bush pig and buffalo are also seen in the park. In total there are five species of primates. Predators are leopard and hyena. The birdlife of Lengwe is attractive with about 300 or so species recorded. The government tourist lodge was renovated and refurbished in 2003 and now operates as Nyala Lodge. Depending on rainfall other than road leading to Nyala Lodge some of the other roads in the park are inaccessible in January or February.

Lake Malawi National Park

This, the world’s first freshwater National Park and a World Heritage Site, is at Cape Maclear. It was designated as a National Park in 1980, to protect the diversity of tropical fish living there, some not found anywhere else on earth. The park includes a land area around the cape and bay, as well as the lake and islands up to 100 metres (330ft) off shore. Here is a veritable aquarium of tropical fish providing a colourful kaleidoscopic display. Of the countless thousands of freshwater fish, the mbuna chichlids are more abundant and varied here than

Game viewing can be done on foot using either guides from Nyala Lodge or scouts from the Lengwe National Park office.

Liwonde National Park

Although only 220 sq miles (580 sq km). It is about 100 miles (160 km) north of Blantyre and only more than half that distance from the hotels on the southern lakeshore. Additionally, game viewing is enhanced because the River Shire flows along its western border. Wildlife includes large numbers of elephants and the river attracts countless hippos and crocodiles. Antelope include kudu, sable and bushbuck. There are lions, leopards and more recently, the black rhino has been re-introduced into the rhino sanctuary, currently there are 16 rhinos in the sanctuary which are planned to be released sometime in the near future.

Nyika is wonderful for trekking, mountain biking, safaris, as well as more conventional 4x4 excursions. The montane vegetation attracts large numbers of antelope from the diminutive duiker to eland and roan. Zebra are common. The park has one of the highest densities of leopard in central Africa and there are a number of species of smaller mammals such as warthog and bushpig. Elephants and buffalo usually keep to the lower ground on the northern edge of the park but elephants have been seen on the high plateaux. For the birdwatcher, the park has a lot to offer: over 400 species have been recorded. The rare Denham’s bustard and the wattled crane are among those to be seen, as is the red-winged francolin - endemic to Nyika. There is such a lot to see in the vast park: waterfalls, a neolithic rock shelter, trout pools and even a ‘magic lake’ are just some of the attractions. There is an airstrip for fly-in safaris.

Birdlife is exceptionally varied. Pel’s fishing owl is often seen at dusk along the river’s edge. There is accommodation in the way of Mvuu Lodge and nearby Mvuu Camp. To reach the riverside lodge, visitors can approach by road and then be ferried across the river, they can drive through the park or they can use a pre-arranged boat from Liwonde town. In the southern region of the park, close to town, there is also accommodation available at Liwonde Safari Camp and Bushman’s Baobabs. There is an airstrip, served by scheduled and charter flights.

Nyika National Park

In 1965 the Nyika National Park became the first certified park in Malawi. Nyika is Malawi’s largest park with an area of no less than 1250 sq

For those on short visits, the Day Visitor Centre is located near the entrance gate and overlooks a water hole where animals come to drink. A variety of Malawian and western cuisine is offered as well as snacks, cold drinks, beer and tea and coffee. There is also a Heritage Centre, curio shop and Environment Education Centre. For more information about Majete Wildlife Reserve, please visit: www.african-parks.org

Majete Wildlife Reserve

Majete Wildlife Reserve is a 70,000 hectare tract of pristine bush in the southern region of Malawi, one hour’s drive from Blantyre. In 2003 African Parks, in agreement with the Department of National Parks and Wildlife, took over the management of the Reserve. To date, over 142km of fencing has been completed around Majete and its total length is patrolled on a daily basis. In addition, 250km of road network has been constructed. The most significant change which has really seen Majete come back to life is the reintroduction of species previously eradicated by poaching. As of March 2012, 2,554 animals have been reintroduced from thirteen species including elephant, black rhino, leopard, buffalo, eland and sable. Lion has been introduced making Majete one of the only reserves in Malawi where the BIG FIVE can be viewed all year round. As a visitor you can explore this magnificent reserve in your own vehicle or go on a guided drive in one of the safari vehicles accompanied by a professional wildlife guide. Other activities include guided bush walks or bird walks, hiking to the top of Majete Hill, visiting the Kapichiri Falls and view spots or a visit to one of our local communities. New viewing hides have been built over water holes andnear the Shire River at Mvuu spot where wildlife and birds can be seen and picnics taken. Inside Majete there are three different types of accommodation. Situated around a serene floodlit waterhole that attracts a variety of wildlife, Thawale Lodge is a peaceful haven from which to experience Majete. Completely unfenced, the camp is regularly visited by wildlife.Thawale Lodge offers six double and twin tented chalets all en-suite and each with its own private veranda overlooking the waterhole. In the north of the reserve, Robin Pope Safaris operate in a private concession and run the exclusive up market Mkulumadzi Lodge. The community camp-site is equipped with a thatched bar and dining space, barbeque area, toilets and hot showers

Mwabvi Wildlife Reserve

The Mwabvi Wildlife Reserve, located at the southernmost tip of Malawi, is over 137sq km of pristine wilderness, boasting biodiversity unrivalled by other parks in the region. With open savannah and magnificent rocky outcrops that allow 360 degree views over the mopane woolands, Mwabvi is an oasis of tranquillity. Wildlife includes kudu, buffalo, impala, warthogs, sable, steenbok, samango monkeys and baboons. There are also over 350 species of bird, including the protected ground hornbill and numerous spectacular native and migratory species, making it a paradise for avid birdwatchers. Day trips are available and it is possible to camp close to Mwabvi River Gorge

Accommodation in the reserve is serviced by two lodges. Tongole Wilderness Lodge, in the heart of Nkhotakota Wildlife Reserve recently maintained its 4* Service after Ministry of Tourism Officials carried out a second grading exercise of the property. The Lodge had also won 3 national Safari awards and came as runners up in 2 Awards; The Safari Awards recognise the very best Safari Lodges, camps, houses and spas at national as well as Africa Level. For inquiries please email: lodge@tongole. com Tel: 0999941421, 0991337681, 0111209194

Nature Sanctuary, where guided walks and fantastic early morning birding are on offer. On the other you will find Lilongwe Wildlife Centre, an internationally accredited sanctuary home to around 200 rescued wild animals. Guided sanctuary tours are available every hour from 8am to 5pm, or you can take yourself along the 4km or so of walking trails that wind alongside the river before stopping off at their new café for lunch. Email wildlife@ llwc.org for more information or call 088 44 88 999.

The second lodging is Bua River Lodge, opened in April 2010, located on the banks of the Bua River, just 2 Km inside the reserve boundary, the lodge offers guided wilderness walks and is an ideal base for bird watching and fishing – or for a supremely relaxing weekend.

Kuti is a beautiful wildlife reserve located just outside Salima. Thanks to the varied habitat which includes woodland, wetland and savannah grassland it is a haven for wildlife, from big mammals like giraffe, zebra, sable and impala through to the hundreds of species of birds. And thanks to the lack of dangerous predators it is possible to explore by foot or by bike as well as by vehicle and there are some beautiful spots around the wetlands for a braai at sunset. Accommodation includes en suite bush and waterfront chalets, A Frames and camping and there are also opportunities for volunteering.

Vwaza Wildlife Reserve

Vwaza Wildlife Reserve, an area of marsh and plain, with a few rocky outcrops, is all of 400 sq miles (1000 sq km) and lies along the Zambian border north-west of Mzuzu. The reserve has a wonderful mix of vegetation: forest and grassland, thin woodland and marsh. It is this rich habitat which attracts a splendid range of birdlife. Nearly

Nkhotakota Wildlife Reserve

Nkhotakota, to the east of the region and near the Lake, is one of the two large game areas in the central region. Its vast 700 sq miles (1800 sq km) is of rugged terrain crossed by a number of rivers, which tumble down the edge of the escarpment as they make their way to the Lake. Most of the reserve is miombo woodland with large patches of tall grasses and 40 Ha. of evergreen forest on the summit of Chipata Mountain. This is a wonderful example of true wilderness, which particularly attracts those who wish to enjoy walking safaris, fishing and climbing. Access to the reserve is possible with saloon cars during the dry season, but within the reserve, walking is the preferred mode of travelling because there are few roads or driveable tracks. The range of mammals is as good as anywhere in Malawi although the environment makes viewing difficult. Elephant, buffalo, lion and leopard are all present. Roan and sable, kudu and waterbuck and a wide variety of smaller antelope, as well as zebra, all occur within the reserve boundaries. The Bua River is home to a larger numbr of crocodiles. Birdlife is prolific with giant kingfishers, Boehm’s bee-eaters, finfoot and palm nut vultures among over 200 recorded species.

Within the park you can find Giraffe, Zebra, Eland, Kudu, Roan, Sable, Nyala, Wildebeest, Waterbuck & Impala. Lake Bvumbwe offers spectacular up close viewing of the animals at the waters edge. Accommodation within the park includes Luxury cottages, Executive rooms and 3 bedroom self catering guest houses.

300 species of birds have been recorded including stork, heron and the white-faced tree duck. Herds of thirty or forty elephants are regularly to be seen and there are large numbers of hippos. Lake Kazuni, near the main entrance to the reserve is famous for its hippos. Buffalo are present in the reserve but their roaming habits make their sightings less easy to predict. Kazuni Safari Camp offer accommodation in this area.

Lilongwe Wildlife Reserve

Not many capital cities can boast such stunning habitat right at their heart and this 180 hectare reserve is undoubtedly a must-see for all visitors passing through. The sprawling acacia combretum woodlands are the last example in the Central Region, and they are home to a wide variety of wildlife from antelopes, wild pigs and hyena to over 200 species of bird. The reserve is cut in half by Kenyatta Road, on one side of which is Lilongwe

microscopic alga contains almost everything a man needs to eat to stay alive. A single cell of spirulina is made of 50 to 70 % protein, vitamins, amino-acids and minerals (iron, calcium, and magnesium). In addition to these nutritional properties, it is also an excellent anti-oxidant. Early scientists of the 18th Century were aware of the existence of these micro-algae but didn’t know of its nutrient potential until the early 1970’s when a team of scientists went to Chad to investigate a strange aspect of the famine that was raging through that country. Indeed what was strange was that while in most rural areas the people were underfed, those people living in the proximity of Lake Roumbou were in perfect health. Why? The scientists noticed that every morning the women around Lake Roumbou collected the blue-green algae that floated on the surface of the lake to use in the preparation of food for the family. The correlation between health and spirulina was quickly made and one of the scientists joyously exclaimed “This is the food of the future!”

Many years before the first human being saw the light of day, the only living creatures on earth were bacteria. One of these bacteria had the good idea, about 3,500 million years ago, of mutating into Arthrospira Platensis, no longer strictly a bacteria but an alga because it feeds on photosynthesis like the rest of the vegetal kingdom. For ease of pronunciation it is now known as Spirulina after its shape, a spiral much like a Land Rover shock absorber but smaller, about 300 microns. The ancient Aztec civilisation of Mexico discovered between 3000 and 5000 years ago that these algae made an excellent invigorating lunch. Indeed it was later found out by 20th century scientists that this

Today, spirulina has become a billion Dollar business worldwide with scores of large-scale farms scattered all over the world producing tons of what has become a commodity. In wealthy countries this magical food is mostly purchased by well (or over) fed individuals who wish to raise their stamina when playing tennis, golf or going skiing. This is certainly not what the scientist had in mind when he rejoiced about having found the food of the future; he was thinking of the millions of people around the world whose low incomes prevents them from cooking healthy, regular meals for their families. In Malawi the sons and daughters of many subsistence farmers could use a daily dose of this rich food. Of course, it’s all a matter of price. Even though spirulina is available in Malawi in a selected number

of pharmacies their high prices (Mk 15,000 for 90 grams) make it too expensive for rural populations. There may be a solution. I would like to urge the heads of all Non-Governmental Organisations involved with the well-being of children to read the large amount of literature available on the subject on internet and, as we say in Southern Africa, “make a plan”. Amongst the hundreds of studies that confirm the numerous health benefits of spirulina, you will find a handful of detractors. These “negative” studies should be ignored for the source of their funding remains dubious. Finally, a personal story: in 2008 my own twin brother was diagnosed with a type of cancer that leaves very few survivors. The Doctors suggested that he’ll be put on palliative care while waiting for the fateful day. After much insistence by the family the Doctor agreed to administer chemotherapy. Four months into the treatment my brother found himself unable to eat, “anything I put in my mouth” he said “tastes like rusty nails”. He would immediately vomit whatever food he tried to ingest. Someone suggested that he swallow as many spirulina tablets as possible on a daily basis. He did and he is still alive today, occasionally playing his tenor saxophone in a blues band. If you break apart a termite mound you’ll also notice the fantastic futuristic looking structure of the tunnels inside it; chamber upon chamber in a highly efficient use of space and raw materials. Their communication systems are also phenomenal. Using vibrations termites are able to warn their colonies of danger at 130 meters/second. We still have lots to learn from these fascinating little creatures. The future of Energy: Solar leaves Enough solar energy strikes the earth in one hour to power our civilization for a year. The energy is there, we just need to harness it and burning ancient sunlight in the form of fossil fuels is not the answer. We know this. Traditionally polymer solar cells perform much worse than silicon. Being transparent they do not capture light anywhere near as efficiently. The transparency of a polymer cell is also an advantage: imagine a classic household window generating energy. The challenge is how to make them more efficient. A
