Farm-stay and home-stay the WWOOF way by Julia Gillmor

For the travel adventurer seeking a unique vacation plusfirsthand experience of organic farming and sustainable living, WWOOF Canada has got you covered. World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms Canada offers a great way to travel Canada and the world, for little more than the cost of a plane ticket. The premise of WWOOF relies on hosts offering work experience on organic farms in exchange for room and board, to individuals looking to volunteer their time and labour to learn about organics and sustainable living. Brought to Canada from UK in the 70s, WWOOF began with a few farms on the east coast. In 1985,

John Vanden Heuvel took over the WWOOF movement, eventually bringing it west to Nelson 20 years ago. Becky Young of Procter recently took over WWOOF Canada from Vanden Heuvel. Today, WWOOF Canada provides opportunities with over 900 farm hosts from the East to West Coast and Yukon and Northwest Territories. WWOOF hosts foster learning about organic food and offer a cultural exchange component for international WWOOFers. Young, who worked her way through Australia 25 years ago, before the movement was well known, is excited about being a host and providing the link between parties looking to participate, “It is a wonderful

opportunity and we are so blessed and grateful to John for giving it to us,” she says. A self-employed computer consultant by trade, Young feels WWOOF is helping her live out her life’s dream of learning to live completely self-sustained. “My interest in organics came about due to my own health issues, I started to do research and came to understand that for health, what was most important is what we feed our bodies.” Young says that WWOOF popularity grew as a direct result of word of mouth; she first heard about WWOOF Canada from friends who had become hosts. Today WWOOF Canada maintains a website that for a fee, hosts $50 and

WWOOFers $45, can join to find opportunities across Canada. Anyone can WWOOF, providing they are willing to work, share and learn. Even those with children have the opportunity to WWOOF. If living on a 44 acre frontier homestead on the Klondike River or working for an organic market garden and B&B overlooking the Northumberland Strait in PEI appeals to you, check out the WWOOF Canada website at www.wwoof.ca or phone 250-229-4448.

Meet the mighty sprout

Sprouts are seeds that have been soaked and rinsed a number of times until they germinate, or sprout. Some sprouts are eaten as soon as they germinate and others are best once they have grown a little plant. The most common sprouts are alfalfa and mung bean sprouts, but all kinds of other sprout mixes are available, from delicate broccoli sprouts to large sunflower sprouts, to dense and crunchy lenmixedLevel bean varietClassictil andDifficulty - Easy ies. punch like nothing else. All kinds of metabolic processes happen in a seed as it begins to grow. The metabolically active seed is usually much higher in nutrients that its latent sk9E000080 counterpart. Sprouts typically are rich in bioavail-

able vitamins, minerals, and phytochemicals as well as amino acids and proteins. You can grow your own sprouts or you can buy locally grown sprouts. We are lucky to have local sprouts available all year here in the Kootenays. Be aware that sprouts have, on very rare occasion, harbored harmful bacteria such as salmonella. For this reason, Health Canada does not recommend that young children, seniors, or people who are immune compromised eat raw sprouts.
