Christmas shopping Enjoy the ‘local’ experience by Sandy Turner The Examiner The countdown has begun. If your Christmas list still needs attention, it’s officially time to get down to business. Avoid the malls, the lines, and the crowds while enjoying this crunch time by shopping on the Independence Square. With a multitude of boutiques, specialty shops, antique stores and art galleries, the Independence Square offers the opportunity to find the perfect gift from the unique to unusual, traditional (Continued on page 3)

or foreign, checking off the Christmas list has never been easier. “The great thing about shopping on the Square is the individualized attention customers receive,” Mikealene Evans, executive director for the Independence Square Association said. “The business owners know their inventory and want to help in any way they can. You will never be just another customer in these shops.” Shopping on the Square can only be described as a diversified, multi-cultural experience with a wide selection of items from the past, present and future as well as American-made and from other countries. Ranging from high-end furniture to home décor, kitchenware, the latest trends in fashion, trinkets, toys, fun foods, antiques, specialty men’s, women’s and children’s gifts and collectibles, each store is not only stocked full of merchandise, but character as well. “The Square has been beautifully decorated for the holidays,” Evans said. “Including a 24-foot Christmas tree decorated with 3,000 lights on the east lawn of the historic courthouse.” The Independence Square shopping experience offers amazing and unique items, which you won’t find in the big box stores, as well as the opportunity to shop local, which directly affects the economy of our communities. By shopping small businesses, which are the backbone of our economy and the heart of the community, it’s a win-win situation for everyone. Before, after or during tackling your gift list, take the time to sit down and relax in one of the many eating establishments offered on the Square. The eateries are as diversified as the shopping, offering everything from fine din-

ing to pizza, Italian to specialty hot dogs, German cuisine to a casual pub. Whether you want a sweet treat from an old-fashioned ice cream parlor or get re-energized at the coffee house, the Square is full of treats and temptations. “With the recent parking availability, people have found that they can walk a shorter distance to see more,” Evans said. “It’s a great family atmosphere to be in during this festive time of the year.” Just minutes from downtown Kansas City, the Square is known for it’s history and stomping ground for President Harry S Truman — although now it has also built the reputation of being the place to dine, shop, relax, learn and have the sense of being someplace, not just anyplace. Read the name of her work, which is normally borrowed from a song title or lyrics, and then allow your eye to begin tracing the realistic shape of the chosen subject. As you turn each female curve, or review the strong line from an animal’s body, the titles will immerse themselves into the artwork. Unique textures are created using multiple tools (traditional and found). “I add the feel and movement of water through my use of texture. states Mary Maude. Each As a young girl, the ocean and it’s never-ending piece is one-of-a-kind, waves have captured a permanent place in Mary with the artist spendMaude’s heart. ing up to two weeks in shaping before her glaze and firing. Her choice of earthenware clay offers an elasticity that is known for helping to capture fine details. Current art pieces are neutrallyglazed; the upcoming series will have hues flowing from deep blues to rich browns. A quote from Mary Maude’s website biography: “But I was now in Seventh grade and I had my first real art class with a real art teacher who talked about real artists. This high school art teacher believed in her student, gifting her tools, clay and encouragement. The clay is long-gone, but the tools continue to serve Mary Maude as she pursues a full-time career in the arts. Thank You from all of us, Mrs. Kiever. Mary Maude’s collection of fine art sculpture is displayed and available for sale at the Frick Modern Art Gallery (located within Frick Electronic Services), 10918 East Winner Road, Independence, MO 64052.
