Choir kicks off its 50th season TAMARA SHEPHARD tshephard@insidetoronto.com It was 1967. Expo 67 took place in Montreal. Hippies lived in Yorkville. And the Toronto Maple Leafs won the Stanley Cup. As communities across Canada engaged in centennial projects, in Etobicoke, a massed choir of approximately 400 choristers assembled to perform for the borough’s official centennial celebration in September 1967. Choristers’ enthusiasm and a warm public reception made it permanent. “I think the choir is a testament to the dedication and commitment of a lot of people over the years,” said Lauren Mayer, a second alto with the Etobicoke Centennial Choir for the past 27 years. “People do it because of that love of singing and a commit● See SACRED, page 10
