An avid tennis player since picking up a racquet as a youngster, Carolynna Gabriel knows the sport still carries something of a highbrow reputation. “I think a little bit of that is still there. It still has that elite varnish,” she said. The resident of the Eglinton Avenue and Avenue Road area is

working to change that. This week at Etobicoke’s West Humber Collegiate Institute, Gabriel and her team held a launch for their latest program, the Sunshine Project, “It was a good, positive day. Canada Blooms gifts flowers to residents at Wesburn Manor Spring is in full bloom at Etobicoke’s Wesburn Manor – thanks to the donation of hundreds of plants from Canada’s largest flower and garden festival. On Tue sda y, Can ad a Blooms helped bring a little taste of spring to the lives of Wesburn Manor residents by delivering more than 600 colourful plants with the help of Procter’s Cartage, which donated transportation of the flowers. “I can’t think of a better way to wrap up Canada Blooms than by donating the flowers to the residents in long-term care,” Bruce Sudds, marketing, communications and sponsorship manager of Canada Blooms, said in a statement. “Through this donation, the event continues to spread the joys and benefits of flowers and gardens to people who truly appreciate them.” During Tuesday’s celebration at Wesburn Manor – one of the City of Toronto’s 10 long-term care homes – York West Councillor Anthony Perruzza, chair of the city’s Community Development

HOOPING IT UP FOR RAI$E-A RUCKUS Staff photos/IAN KELSO

STUDENTS VS. TEACHERS: A basketball fundraiser between teachers and students at Etobicoke Collegiate Institute took place Friday for the RAI$E-A-RUCKUS campaign. The event took place in the newly refurbished gym, thanks to the campaign’s funds. Above are, left to right, student Nathan Adriano, teacher Derek Oei, student Cherrie Reymond and teacher Sarah Jackson. At left, teacher Shaul makes a breakaway as student Griffin Kieby tries to get to the ball. The students won the game by a score of 37-32.

heatre Etobicoke brought the house down with laughter after their opening performance of Too Many Cooks last week at The Assembly Hall. The hilarious farce, written by Douglas E. Hughes and Marcia Kash, has all the right elements for an evening of comedic theatre including over-the-top characters, gangsters, rumrunning and spiked punch that gets consumed, knowingly and unknowingly. It’s 1932 at the height of prohibition in Niagara Falls, ON, but an exciting day for Irving Bubbalowe (Bob Hall) and his daughter, Honey (Caitlyn Smith). They’re gearing up for the reopening of their hotel, Le Chateau Bubbalowe, with a huge dinner to be prepared by the famous Chef LaPlouffe. However, when the chef fails to show up, Frank Plunkett (Stephen Vani), an out-of-work chef, does. Panicked about the dinner that won’t be, Honey convinces him to pose as LaPlouffe, and he unsuspectingly agrees to more than he bargained for. Meanwhile, Le Chateau Bubbalowe employee, Mickey (Paul R. Whitaker), has stolen some illegal rum from notorious gangsters Alfonse “Noodles” Feghetti (Alex J. Bodnar) and Shirley (Sammy Allouba), and unbeknownst to Irving, has stashed it in his hotel. If things couldn’t get any worse, turns out Chef LaPlouffe is wanted by immigration so Veronica Snook (Xenia Mustapic) with immigration enters the scene, as do the gangsters looking for revenge and their hooch. Finally, Const. Hamilton X. Effing (Alex Strauss) comes to the hotel in response to a call made by Irving, who fears for his life and the violence that’s sure to erupt. In an attempt to keep everyone alive and the

gangsters, immigration and police at bay, Irving, Honey and Frank are thrust into all kinds of crazy scenarios including creating multiple stories, identities, accents and a lot of running in and out of rooms. This show is clearly wellrehearsed and directed by Katherine Bignell-Jones. Every detail was taken care of from the many props (even the prop malfunctions were funny) and costumes to every entrance, exit, reaction and cast movements (of which there are many in a farce). This means there was never a dull moment in this show full of talented comedic actors. Some may think it’s unprofessional when a character steps out of role and laughs, but in this case, these moments make some of the scenes even funnier and wackier then they already are. This cast pulls off an extremely fast-paced, physically demanding show with high-energy and their own unique spin on each character. How Hall as Irving pulled off his role is a tribute to his talent, keeping it all together as the patriarch of all the madness. Strauss has an unbelievably funny scene as the good-Mountie-gottenwasted, and Bodnar and Allouba as the stereotypical gangster duo nailed it with their mannerisms and delivery. Smith is amazing as Honey. She, along with Vani as Frank, garnered much of the laughter as they played multiple identities throughout the entire show. This play is silly with over-the-top humour, and if you’re looking for an evening of entertaining theatre, this show is for you. Too Many Cooks runs until March 29 at 8 p.m. and one Sunday matinee at 2 p.m. March 30 at The Assembly Hall, 1 Colonel Samuel Smith Park Dr. Tickets are $22. Order your tickets online at www.theatre-etobicoke. com or call 416-264-1889.

Playing a key role in the city S

trong neighbourhoods make a strong city, and involved residents make strong neighbourhoods. In Toronto, that’s true thanks to the work being done by our scores of local residents’ associations. These organizations play a key role in how our city is not only governed, but in how it is planned and how it grows. Neighbourhood associations, which can vary in size from a dozen members to those with membership lists of more than 1,000, are the first place to go for residents who want to have a say in their community. In this week’s paper, our special feature looks at these local associations and their impact. To see what’s going on across the city and how you can get involved, visit us at http://bit.ly/1hlAN8D Whether it’s organizing a street party or dealing with a massive redevelopment proposal, the neighbourhood association is the best our view way for residents to get involved. There’s power in numbers when it to such associations when Associations comes they need to make their case to the roots of a municipal politicians and big developers. strong Toronto Don Mills Residents Inc. is a good example of this. The neighbourhood association with more than 1,000 members took a proactive role in negotiations with developer Cadillac Fairview when it came to the Shops at Don Mills redevelopment, which also included condos and a possible community centre. The residents’ group was able to ensure that the community centre was not lost during what was a sometimes difficult and contentious planning process. The reality is that a powerful neighbourhood association puts the local politicians on notice that they have to work with residents to come up with a satisfactory solution to development plans, or risk not being elected again. This helps focus the politicians to bring the full weight of the city and its planning processes to bear when negotiating with developers. A strong association also helps the developers know what the feelings of the community are, and who they need to deal with in order to come up with a successful project that can be welcomed, or at least tolerated, rather than scorned by the area’s residents. But it’s not all about negotiating with politicians and developers. The real strength of these organizations is how they bring the people of a neighbourhood together. They make your community stronger, and by extension they make Toronto – as a whole – a better place.

October is a long way off to make a decision on winner of mayor’s race

W

henever Karen Stintz gets asked about how she feels about her single-digit next-to-last spot in the polls, she always answers that she’s looking forward to a good mayoral campaign and avoids the numbing question. One might be glib and note that given her trailing popularity, a good campaign is as much as she might reasonably look forward to. But Stintz does imply a point: the mayor’s race is a long game, and while the Chow, Ford and Tory campaigns are dominating attention now, there is still time for those positions to shift. After this article goes to press but before you read this, Stintz and the rest of them will have finished the first mayoralty debate of the

david nickle the city season, and that might have changed the entire field by now. But for the moment, it’s fair to say that Tory, Ford and Chow are running a rear guard fight against Stintz and David Soknacki’s attempt to gain ground. On Monday, Stintz made her first foray into that, with what she billed as a major policy announcement and delivered as a policy clarification. She gathered some cameras and reporters together on a south Riverdale street corner to give some more details about how she would monetize Toronto Hydro to pay for a downtown relief line. Stintz had already said she wanted to get some

cash out of Toronto Hydro for the subway – when she spoke at the Toronto Region Board of Trade to launch her campaign. There weren’t details then, but she was well aware that the complicated rules of utility ownership in this province meant that Toronto couldn’t sell more than 10 per cent without paying a whack of tax. So Monday, Stintz told reporters that the city would need to negotiate changes to the rules — so that the city could sell just over 50 per cent of the billion-dollar utility. That would make a down-payment for the downtown relief line. The wisdom of this policy is debatable. Toronto receives a tangible benefit from the power company — in the form of dividends, which last year amounted to $41.9 million. That rev-

enue will have to be made up somewhere, even as the city struggles to find more cash to build the relief line. But like everything coming from candidates at this stage, taking a position is a gamble. When Tory questions the wisdom of Stintz’ financing policy, Stintz can point to the absence of Tory’s. When Chow suggests that the city should keep its electricity asset, Stintz can paint the New Democrat frontrunner as a big-government socialist. Of course, it’s easy for everyone to name-call in March. But really, at this stage of the game, everybody’s got to do what they got to do. It is, as Stintz has observed, a long game ahead.

Proceeds go to Out of the Cold artists >>>from page 1 or so artists. “It’s also community building, because our artists really do get to know each other, and occasionally some bonding goes on around the table.” Select works from this year’s slate of All Saints artists will be on display – and up for sale – this weekend at the 13th annual Out of the Cold Art Show and Sale. On Saturday, March 29 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Sunday, March 30 from 9 a.m. to noon, all are invited to come out to All Saints Kingsway Anglican Church, 2850 Bloor St. W., to peruse the original paintings, all of which will be priced at $25 each (unframed). As in years past, proceeds from the sale of each painting will go directly back to the artist who created it. This year’s poster advertising the Out of the Cold Art Show features the painting ‘Nebula’ by Out of the Cold participant Paul, who is now in his third season at the All Saints program.

Ralph Wilson examines a collection of artwork on Friday, created by clients of the All Saints Kingsway Anglican Church’s Out of The Cold program.

A talented artist in his schoolboy years, Paul said he put his creative endeavors to the side as he entered the working world – only to rediscover them again about a decade ago after suffering a medical setback. “My teachers in high school said I should pursue art, but I went into science instead,” he said, noting a stroke suffered in 2004 rendered the technical nature of his job too difficult to continue. “Then someone put art

materials in front of me. Doing art helps relieve stress for me – and it’s a joy for me that people like my art and that it makes them happy.” Not only is Paul’s portfolio from this winter expected to be a sellout at the upcoming All Saints Out of the Cold sale this weekend, but his paintings were also recently featured at the Show Gallery on Queen Street West.

Students get a leg up with Trust 15 Second annual fundraiser to feature celebrity emcees Marci Ien, Tracy Moore and keynote speaker Michael ‘Pinball’ Clemons

CYNTHIA REASON creason@insidetoronto.com When Marcia Brown first launched the Ladies on the Rise mentorship program in 2011, she was paying strictly out-of-pocket for all of the program’s costs and materials – including weekly meals for the program’s 15 teen participants. Fast forward three years, and programming under Brown’s umbrella Trust 15 Youth Community Support Organization – the not-for-profit organization providing inner-city youth with programs that facilitate positive behaviour, creative expression and cooperative working skills, for which Brown serves as both founder and executive director – has expanded to encompass three different programs that serve 120 young people from the north Etobicoke community. Those programs include: the original Ladies on the Rise program, its brother program Men of Distinction and, most recently, Girls on the Rise, a literacy program for preteen girls based on the American Girl line of multicultural historical dolls and book series that just launched this past school year. With so many young, hungry minds (not to mention mouths) to feed, Brown – an education assistant with the Toronto District School Staff photo/MARY GAUDET Board – said she can no longer afford to fund it all by herself. STEPPING UP: Trust 15 runs Girls on the Rise, Ladies on the Rise and Men of Distinction, programs that connect young people from Rexdale with “It’s just grown to point where I positive role models. Before You Spend Thousands on a New Roof… The Integrity Roof System

What Risks Do You Face? According to the Better Business Bureau, which tracks the ‘reputable’ roofing companies, roofing is at or near the top of the list for customer enquiries and complaints for the last three years in a row. Homeowners with limited experience in roof replacement rely on the roofing contractor to recommend the proper specifications. This process becomes confusing because there is no regulation in the industry, and each contractor recommends a different job. What you should know about roof surface or roof deck preparation: The roof deck is the structural surface over which your roofing materials are applied. All roof boards and/or plywood must be fastened securely to the rafters, and damaged or rotten wood must be replaced. Your attic should be inspected before the work starts to uncover potential problems. A bad roof surface allows the nails to push up through the shingles, causing leaks. What you should know about underlayment: A complete underlay system should be applied before your shingles are installed. There are two types of roofing underlay, waterproof and water resistant. Waterproof underlay is needed in areas most vulnerable to leaks: the eaves edge of the roof; in valleys, at dormer sides, around chimneys and around skylights. Water resistant underlay, often called “tar paper”, is needed on the remaining roof area. Water resistant underlay protects the roof surface in a storm situation where a few shingles blow off, but cannot be replaced immediately. What you should know about ventilation: Improper attic venting is a common cause of early shingle failure, and your product warranty requires that your attic have proper ventilation. Venting consists of intake and exhaust. To facilitate proper air flow, your attic needs intake vents located in the overhang and exhaust vents at the roof peak. A balanced venting system is required; otherwise air will be pulled from your house. An inspection of your attic is essential to present appropriate and complete venting solutions. What you should know about shingle quality: All shingles are not the same. Estimators should include at least three grades of shingles and inform you of the real expected shingle life. In addition to their aesthetic appeal, better quality shingles often provide you with the best value when measured on a cost per year basis.

transit

Who’s going to get the Sardine award? TTCriders is getting ready to announce the first recipient of its TTC Sardine Award. On Friday, March 28, the city’s largest transit riders advocacy (TTCRiders) will name the local elected official it believes has played the biggest role in contributing to the phenomenon known as transit sardining. The term refers to the situation when like the canned fish, large groups of commuters are tightly stuffed into a metal box (in this case a subway train, bus or streetcar) – a reality for many TTC users. The group is recruiting volunteers to dress in sardine costumes for the ceremony at noon at Queen’s Park Station at the southwest corner of College Street and University Avenue. Visit www.ttcriders.ca for more information. streetcar rides on weekend wVintage

The TTC is inviting residents to take a ride on a vintage streetcar this weekend. On Sunday, March 30, from

rahul gupta TO in TRANSIT noon to 4 p.m. one of the TTC’s two restored Presidents Conference Committee (PCC) streetcars will offer rides for free along Kingston Road, between the Woodbine and Bingham loops. The vehicle, which dates back to the late1930s, was once the backbone of the TTC’s surface operations and Toronto’s fleet of 745 PCC cars was the largest in the world. Rides are free of charge. Transit seasonal schedule changes wGO

While it may not feel like spring, GO Transit has unveiled seasonal changes to its train and bus schedules. The regional transit provider has also announced it will offer weekend train service from Union Station to both Niagara Falls and Barrie during the spring and summer. While specific schedules are not yet known, the Niagara service will be in

operation over the Victoria Day weekend May 16-19, then from the end of June until September and once more on Thanksgiving weekend. The Barrie service will run weekends from June 28 until Sept. 1. art for traffic cabinets wPublic

In an effort to keep its street infrastructure free of graffiti, the city is launching a new public art campaign. The city’s transportation services department is undertaking to cover 2,200 traffic cabinets, which house traffic signal controls, with special anti-graffiti wrap designed by renowned local artists Gary Taxali and Moira McElhinney. The wrapping is also seen on telephone and street poles and is touted as a way to beautify the city while promoting local artists. Rahul Gupta is The Guardian’s transit reporter. Prevent playground injuries Kids love playing on swings, slides and climbing. While playgrounds are ideal settings for fun-filled days, they also carry a certain degree of risk. Parents can reduce their youngsters’risk of injury and the severity of injuries in various ways. • Invest in adequate surfacing. Although no fall is pleasant, the severity of injury resulting from a fall can be greatly reduced depending on how safe the surface material is. Blacktop, concrete or even grass can be

painful to land on, however, loose-fill materials like pea gravel, sand, shredded rubber, or mulch can soften falls. Plus, these materials are relatively low-cost and can be made from recycled items. A depth of 12 inches is often recommended. • Choose an age-appropriate structure. Injuries frequently occur when children use equipment designed for older kids. Playgrounds are not onesize-fits-all. Streamlining development process leads to economic prosperity

Bryan Tuckey

President of the Building Industry and Land Development Association (BILD)

In 2013, I dedicated my columns to helping readers understand the reality of the building and development industry in the GTA. This year, I would like to offer a factbased, solution-oriented discussion to add further clarity to the conversation. As I’ve mentioned in many of my previous columns, the building and development industry is a major engine to the economic prosperity of our province. Just in the GTA alone, our industry created more than 200,000 jobs in new home construction, residential renovation and related fields, paying out more than $10 billion in wages. These wages are then used to purchase groceries, clothing and services, boosting other industries and further contributing to the overall economy. BILD and the Ontario Home Builders’Association has recently made a submission

to the Ontario government, advocating for a land use planning system that affords certainty which is paramount to ensuring investment-ready communities necessary to compete for new global investments, or changing economic forces. Investment-ready communities are designated areas where developers, retailers and small business owners can come in to create complete “live, work and play” communities without having to deal with unnecessary red tape which often leads to unnecessary costs for consumers. The province announced last August it was moving forward with the investmentready plan as the country’s first provincewide certified site program. The program tells the world that Ontario municipalities are open for business and serious about creating jobs. It provides certainty about environmental concerns and

access to services, and helps businesses to make more informed decisions to get new business off the ground sooner.

“Small business owners can come in to create complete ‘live, work and play’ communities.” To contribute to the continued economic vitality of the province, our industry must operate within a framework that provides certainty and establishes clear and consistent rules for development in deter-

mining how our communities evolve. This certainty also serves the existing residents by providing them with clear and consistent reasons as to the evolving nature of their communities. As outlined in BILD’s submission, an important first step would be for municipalities to ensure that local Official Plans and zoning by-laws are up to date in order to help our industry implement the provincial intensification policies set out by Places to Grow. While Official Plans are reviewed every five years, most municipalities across the GTA are operating with outdated zoning by-laws, some of which date back more than 60 years. This disconnect in land-use planning policy continues to spawn significant delays in the planning approval process, which translates to unnecessary costs for new-home purchasers.

Building new homes that people can afford continues to be a challenge for both the industry and new-home buyers. Together with our partners in government, BILD and OHBA will continue to work toward building safe, quality, complete communities for the up to 100,000 people that choose to make the GTA their home every year. To learn more about the BILD and OHBA submissions to the province, you can visit our official blog at www.bildblogs.ca. Bryan Tuckey is President and CEO of the Building Industry and Land Development Association (BILD) and is a land-use planner who has worked for municipal, regional and provincial governments. He can be found on Twitter (twitter.com/bildgta), Facebook (facebook.com/bildgta) and BILD’s official online blog (bildblogs.ca).

community-oriented.” Down in Mimico, meanwhile, Kyra Trainor and her fellow members of the likewise-active Mimico Residents Association have found no lack of issues to rally around – namely the Mimico 20/20 plan, ongoing strife between a local concrete mixing plant and the residents who live in its vicinity, the rejuvenation of Amos Waites Park, the redevelopment of Mimico Wesley United Church, and, lastly, issues of prostitution and safety in the community. The Mimico Residents Association’s primary role in tackling each of those issues, Trainor added, has been that

of liaison. “To me, our role as a residents association is really to act as a liaison between many facets of the community, and politically in understanding the bureaucratic channels that we need to be engaged in. So we have very open relationships with our city councillor, our MPP and our MP – we can call them at any time and they will answer our calls,” said Trainor, who served as president of the Mimico Residents Association for two years before stepping down from the role last week. “Being the collective voice of the community, I think, adds more weight to any cause we decide to get involved in. I think when we weigh in on something...when we put our name behind something, it adds clout – that it’s not just crazy residents complaining, but residents that have a valid concern that the rest of us should be concerned about, as well.” Indeed, EtobicokeLakeshore Councillor Mark Grimes said he often uses both the Mimico Residents Association and the Humber Bay Shores Condo Association – the two most active in his Ward 6 – as a kind of “sounding board.” “They’re both great groups of people all looking for the same thing, which is to improve their neighbourhood. It’s good to have that voice represented when I have these public meetings – they’re who I really rely on,” he said. We’ve got more. THEY’VE GOT MAD SKILLS

CLUBS UNITE: The Etobicoke Rugby Football Club’s Ian Singleton, left, pitches back to Ryan Stanley during a skills clinic hosted by the Ontario Senior Men’s Rugby Team on Saturday at the Lakeshore Collegiate sports dome. At right, Etobicoke Rugby Football Club president Paul Rooney demonstrates a tackle with Jesse Matthews, holding ball.

Brennan Vecchio, 6, is the Etobicoke Sports Hall of Fame athlete of the month. Born to skate, Brennan started playing hockey at the age of three and just recently completed his final year at the Tyke level. This past year Brennan enjoyed playing hockey at Humber Valley Hockey Association making many new friends who all shared the same love of the sport. In addition to playing at the house league level, Brennan had the opportunity to play on the select team scoring 21 goals in 21 games and he ended the year on a high, scor-

ing five goals in the final game. Another highlight for Brennan was playing in a local tournament and picking up the MVP award. Although he is surr o u n d e d by To r o n t o Maple Leafs fans at home, Brennan’s favourite team to cheer for is the Chicago Blackhawks, but his favourite NHL player is Leafs’ forward Phil Kessel. And by the sounds of it, he can score just like Kessel. The Athlete of the Month is sponsored by The Etobicoke Sports Hall of Fame, Humber College, Canadian Tire – The Queensway and The Etobicoke Guardian. Program to run at West Humber JMS >>>from page 1 20, will offer subsidized tennis lessons for children aged six to 12 in a lowerincome Etobicoke neighbourhood and three others in North York. Gabriel is the founder and program director of Wilmington Tennis, the driving force behind the Sunshine Project, which also includes the city, the Ontario Tennis Association, the Ontario Trillium Foundation, Canadian Tire’s Jumpstart foundation, Tennis Canada and Pine Point Tennis Club as partners. Wi l m i n g t o n Te n n i s’s mission is to make tennis accessible to all children, regardless of their family’s income level.

Gabriel named it after North York’s Wilmington Avenue, a two-kilometre street that cuts through homes of various income levels. Through various outreach programs, more than 1,000 children have learned to play tennis over the last four years. The sport offers both opportunities for both individual success and teamwork, Gabriel said. “I think tennis is a sport that allows kids who may not like contact sports a chance to shine,” she said. “It’s becoming more real (to people that) ‘This is a sport we can play as a family on the weekend’.” This spring, the Sunshine

Project will run at four public tennis courts located beside schools, including in Etobicoke, West Humber Ju n i o r M i d d l e S c h o o l southeast of West Humber Boulevard and Martin Grove Road. The project is funded by the Trillium Foundation, which has donated $211,200, and the Canadian Tire Jumpstart program, which is contributing $150 per child. The children’s families must also pay on a sliding scale depending on their financial ability, from $25 up to $300, which is a fraction of the market rate of $600. Furies are champs, Patriots move on in hockey action How do you go from the fourth and final seed to the top club team in the world: for the Etobicoke-based Toronto Furies, based out of the MasterCard Centre, the answer, apparently, was welcoming one of their Olympic gold medalists back into the fold. Scarborough native Natalie Spooner, who helped the Canadian women’s hockey team win the gold medal in Sochi, returned to the Furies in time for the Ca n a d i a n Wo m e n’s Hockey League (CWHL) playoffs and she was a force to be reckoned with. The five-team CWHL had wrapped up the regular season with the Montreal Stars far out in front (43 points) followed by a three-pack of the Boston Blades (26), Calgary Inferno (25) and the Furies (23). Missing the playoffs was the Brampton Thunder (13). But it was the Furies that won the ‘Clarkson Cup’ championship game last Saturday 1-0 over Boston with Britni Smith scoring 33 seconds

into overtime, assisted by Natalie Spooner and Carolyne Prevost. It was sweet revenge for the Furies who had lost their round-robin game 2-1 to Boston. The Furies opened with a 3-2 win over Calgary and then closed out the round robin by eliminating Montreal (who had also lost to Boston) in a 1-0 shootout (with Spooner scoring the lone goal) to advance to the championship game against Boston. REACH SEMIfinals wPATRIOTS

The Toronto Lakeshore Patriots, based out of Etobicoke’s Westwood Arenas, were set to start their provincial junior A hockey league best-of-seven semifinal series against the Georgetown Raiders last night (Wednesday). Both teams won their previous two best-of-seven series by identical margins of 4-0, 4-1. Action moves to Georgetown Saturday with Game 3 at Westwood on Monday.
