Prayer vigil held for 15-year-old Jarvis Montaque CYNTHIA REASON creason@insidetoronto.com To r o n t o’s f a i t h c o m m u n i t y assembled at a tearful prayer vigil Wednesday night in support of the family of slain teen Jarvis Montaque – the third 15-year-old gunned down in the city in just one month. Dr. Carmen Lewis of Etobicoke’s Lighthouse Fellowship Assembly was just one of many faith leaders who spoke out against the recent spate of gun violence responsible for the “slaughter” of Jarvis and so many other young boys.

Reilly Smith scores first NHL goals Mark off another milestone for Mimico’s Reilly Smith - his first National Hockey League goals. The 21-year-old Dallas Stars forward potted his first and second goals last weekend. His first goal came in a 4-3 win over the Vancouver Canucks last Friday, Feb. 15 and his second goal came in a 4-3 loss to the Calgary Flames on Sunday, Feb. 17. He was looking to keep the fledgling goal scoring streak going Thursday against Vancouver. He now has two points in 14 games this season, after going scoreless in his three-game NHL debut last season.

“There are so many things that are happening in our community – the shooting, the killing. Father God, it needs to stop,” prayed Lewis at the emotional vigil in front of Jarvis’ family and nearly 200 supporters at Elmbank Community Centre. “We’re asking you God, as we strategize as to how we can resolve these problems, that you will give us the wisdom that we need...and we ask that you touch our young people – give them hope, give them peace, give them joy.” Jarvis’ murder over the Family >>>JARVIS, page 18

SMITH BROTHERS Brother Brendan Smith, 24, is a top-four defenceman with the Detroit Red Wings and looking to get back into action imminently from a shoulder injury that has sidelined him since Feb. 2. Another brother, Rory Smith, 26, is an all-star defensive specialist with the Colorado Mammoth in the National Lacrosse League. All three were born and raised in Mimico where they grew up playing a variety of sports including lacrosse with the Mimico Mountaineers.

Teen lands top scholarship at Queen’s University TAMARA SHEPHARD tshephard@insidetoronto.com Dante Mottillo has won the postsecondary lottery, of sorts. The Father John Redmond Catholic Secondary School and Regional Arts Centre student is one of only 50 Canadians to be awarded the 2013 Queen’s University Chancellor’s Scholarship, one of Queen’s most prestigious major admission awards. Valued at $36,000, the scholarship is renewable for four years based on continued academic excellence and community service. More than 900 high school students across Canada were nominated for this year’s Chancellor’s Scholarship by their high schools based on academic excellence, creativity and initiative, demonstrated leadership and school/community involvement. “I didn’t think I had a chance,” a modest Mottillo, 17, said Tuesday seated in the Etobicoke high school’s conference room. “There were two nominees from our school. Imagine all the nominees from schools all across Canada. That’s a lot of nominees.” The North York teen began his high school career studying visual arts with advanced placements in French, English, math and science. To date, he has earned greater than 90 per cent in all but one of his classes. Every Saturday, Mottillo is a oneon-one reading tutor at his local library. A goaltender, he coaches other goalies both on and off the ice. He tutors in math and English at school. Not surprising, considering Mottillo intends to become a high

Dante Mottillo, in Grade 12 at Father John Redmond Catholic Secondary School, has been awarded a Queen's University Chancellor Award, valued at $36,000 over four years. The stellar student is also a published poet, visual artist, hockey goalie, and peer tutor, and intends to become a high school English and math teacher.

school math and English teacher. “Him,” Mottillo said, pointing to his English teacher Christopher Stidham, when asked his inspiration for becoming a teacher. “The first day of Grade 9 I still remember he looked at me, smiled and said: ‘You’re going to be trouble.’ I loved that class. It was a lot of fun,” Mottillo said of Stidham’s Grade 9 English class. “There are great faculty at this school. Every teacher I’ve had, I’ve loved.” Mottillo ran with his love of read-

ing and writing to join Stidham’s writing club, as well as write for the Diaspora Dialogues’ youth blog, Young Writers from the Edge. He read one of his original poems, “Mint in a Noon Time Alley” at last year’s Word on the Street festival. “He could submit that as a 40-year-old and someone would say, ‘that’s a damn good poem and want to publish it in a journal,’” Stidham said of Mottillo’s prose inspired by a Grade 12 writer’s craft class observational field trip to the AGO and

to Kensington Market. “I honestly have no doubt we’ll see his name not just as a teacher, but on the spine of a book or being advertised as a reader at some festival. If he keeps writing, and I hope he does, he has quite the gift.” Stidham wrote a nomination letter in support of Mottillo’s scholarship application. “He may well be the brightest. But he is without a doubt the hardest working student, always trying to do better. Paired with his intelli-

gence, that is what I think sets him apart from probably all the other applicants out there. He’s also doing dozens of other things on the side whether it’s editing or publishing or drawing or tutoring or playing chess or ping pong, cheering for the Habs,” Stidham said. Stidham introduced Mottillo to his love of the classics with Charles Dickens’ Great Expectations. The teen’s favourite contemporary writer is New York Times’ bestselling author Matthew Pearl, who spins historical fiction into murder mysteries in his novels The Dante Club, The Poe Shadow, The Last Dickens and his latest work, The Technologists. A voracious reader, Mottillo writes the names of author and books he wants to read on Post-It notes attached to a cork board next to his desk at home. Next month, Mottillo will make a return visit to Queen’s open house over March Break to get a feel for the campus and the course offerings before he makes his decision on his application to Queen’s concurrent education program. He has been accepted into the Dean’s Circle at York University, where he has also applied to the concurrent education program, which grants an undergraduate, as well as an education degree. His older sister, Amanda, is enrolled in York’s concurrent education program. She intends to become a dance teacher. Stidham foresees a successful future teaching career for his young charge. “He’ll be a tough teacher, funny. He’ll be excellent. He’s a very, very hard worker. He gives 110 per cent to everything he does.”

Beer Store steps up its recycling program, adding paint cans, electronics LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com The first of its kind in the province, The Beer Store officially opened its ‘Recycling Plus’ depot that provides a one-stop drop-off spot for empty alcohol containers, paint cans and household electronics last Friday. Located in the Dupont Street and Symington Avenue area, on Campbell Avenue across from The Beer Store, the depot – a pilot proj-

ect – was initiated in co-operation with Stewardship Ontario and Sims Recycling Solutions. An idea that arose from Beer Store employees, Recycling Plus is an evolution of the beverage distributor’s deposit-return programs. high returns “Ninety one per cent of all beer and 80 per cent of all wine, spirit and cooler containers are brought

back,” said Ted Moroz, president, of The Beer Store during a grandopening media event at the depot, 299 Campbell Ave. “We’re able to divert half a million metric tones of packaging from landfill.” Now, in addition to beer and wine bottles, Torontonians can get rid of a wide range of electronics, batteries and paint cans. Moroz called the depot a “true one-stop shop where environmentally concerned people can

bring back their waste” keeping “potentially hazardous waste” from landfill. Stewardship Ontario will oversee the collection and safe processing of batteries, paints, stains and coatings while Sims Recycling Solutions will process the returned electronic waste. Since its inception in 2008, the Orange Drop Program has kept more than 72,000 tonnes of household hazardous waste from landfills and

waterways in Ontario, said Lyle Clarke, executive vice-president of Stewardship Ontario. Clarke said customer convenience is key to the success of the project. n For a complete list of items now accepted for recyling and depot hours, read the full story online www.insidetoronto.com/ news-story/2077025-beer-storeexpands-its-recycling-program-toinclude-paint-cans-electronics/

Mayor Ford misses his chance to be inclusive

Y

ou’re not coming to my party! Not those exact words, but to some degree Mayor Rob Ford said as much to opposition councillors and their hopes of getting on his executive committee. Wednesday’s meeting of Toronto council was ridiculous – debating for hours on what would be on the agenda, even a long debate on whether they should have a debate on emergency shelter beds. However, it was when attention was turned to including downtown councillor Adam Vaughan on the mayor’s executive committee that things became very apparent: Mayor Ford has no intention of welcoming anyone with opposing views into his inner circle. our view “You want to put people on that are going to disrupt Opposing our committee – and I don’t think it’s right,” said Ford. “If you’re not going to support the voice needed agenda, you’re going to put a on committee tax-and-spend lefty on there and I don’t want that.” Yes, the executive committee is tasked with moving along the mayor’s agenda – whether you like it or not, in some cases. Ford assured any councillor could give a speech before the executive, and suggest motions that may be moved by members. It is, after all, their task to focus the conversation before it comes to council where, whatever is decided, it comes down to a vote. In the end, what comes from the executive committee may or may not get voted in by council. Vaughan argued the committee needed some representation from Toronto’s downtown core. Very true. Especially when considering since the 2010 election not a single councillor from the Toronto-East York Community Council area has sat on Ford’s executive committee. The city’s wins and losses are shared by all its residents. Having a voice that speaks to the unique issues of every corner of the city, and all residents of the city is not a bad thing. Allowing someone from the left a voice at the executive table would not be the wrong move by the mayor. Choosing a left-of-centre councillor who can work constructively with Ford and his agenda is the key to having a contrarian voice at the table. We endorse the idea of having representation from all sides of the political spectrum, from every part of the city, on the executive committee; and we call for expanding the motion by rookie councillors Mary-Margaret McMahon and Jaye Robinson to set councillor term limits to also include sitting on any city committee. newsroom

Cartoon shows why Canada needs proportional representation: reader To the editor: Re: Cartoon, Page 4, Jan. 31. The cartoon commenting on the poor functioning of both minority and majority governments brilliantly highlights the problem with our current electoral system. The United Kingdom more accurately calls minority governments “hung parliaments” because the government is not the parliament. The government is the prime minister and the cabinet. In a hung parliament, legislation requires the support of more than one party. The big problem with this is that defeat of some legislation is taken as triggering a new election. In many nations it instead merely triggers a restructuring of the government – new alliances

are formed that can enjoy the support of the majority of legislators. Only when a fresh coalition cannot be formed is an election necessary. The other side of the coin is that our majority governments aren’t. They don’t actually represent the majority of the voters. no clear support Usually they only represent about 40 per cent. This means that legislation passed by parliament does not have the clear support of the electorate. The most popular class of electoral systems, proportional representation, ensures the elected representatives actually do reflect the way the people voted. Bills passed by parliament

really do enjoy the support of the representatives of the majority of the people. Over the last 60 years, Canada has had more federal elections than any other nation I know of, including Israel and Italy. Our electoral system has given us neither stable governments nor even responsive ones. Since they almost never are elected by the majority of the voters, they are not even democratic. If we followed the example of most countries and switched to some form of proportional representation, a cartoon complaining about the problems of both majority and minority governments would not be needed. Gary Dale

To the editor: Re: ‘Incentives sought for development on MimicoBy-The-Lake,’ News, Feb. 14 Councillor Mark Grimes’ recent motion to offer incentives to encourage investment in Mimico didn’t shock me, although it is enlightened. What’s really surprising is that some residents groups still insist that we take the slow and steady approach. Really? Some of us have been waiting for 40 years to see some positive changes along the lakeshore. Redevelopment is not an evil that must be resisted simply for the misguided preservation of a mixed neighbourhood. In fact, it is the selfish resistance to change that causes the area’s continued stagnation and prevents families from improving their lives. If Mimico is to ever reach its potential as the jewel by the lake, we need help from people like Grimes to see it through. Mark Gaudet

Problems many on TTC To the editor: On a visit to Scotland quite a few years ago, I noticed that the buses had an area at the front where two persons could sit in a double seat facing the front of the bus with a stroller in front of each of them. They were not out in the aisle. It would allow a few people standing room if not needed for strollers. The TTC needs to make room for this. There are many annoying things on TTC; such as, people with grocery carts, backpacks, dogs, body odour and those wearing too much perfume. Surely, we can deal with strollers with the precious little bundles in them. Norma Clarke

It’s about to get a whole lot quieter on GO trains. The transit service has designated the upper coach of most trains running on the Barrie line as special Quiet Zones, for passengers seeking solitude from noisy commutes.

In the specially marked areas, passengers will be asked to refrain from engaging in noisy conversations as well as to mute electronics like cellphones, tablets and laptops. While GO Transit employees will not enforce the silence standards, riders are encouraged to politely ask someone making noise to tone it down

or head to another part of the train. The new zones will be in place on every trip on the line leaving or heading to Union Station, save the 7:22 a.m. southbound trip and a northbound trip leaving Union at 5:35 p.m. For more information about the new quiet zones, visit www.gotransit.com

Jarvis remembered as ‘incredible young man’ Redesigned newspaper to have more anchor features, more colour

>>>from page 1 Day weekend marked the third teen gun fatality in Toronto since Jan. 18, when Tyson Bailey, 15, was shot multiple times in the stairwell of a Regent Park highrise. Fifteen-year-old St. Aubyn Rodney, shot inside his Jane Street and Finch Avenue West apartment on Feb. 11, was the next. And then there was Jarvis, who was shot down at close range in what police believe was a targeted shooting Sunday, Feb. 17 night while hanging out with friends on a paved walkway just outside his Jamestown home at around 10:50 p.m. The suspect in the shooting, described by police as a black male wearing dark clothing, is still outstanding. Characterized by all who knew him as churchgoing kid who stayed out of trouble, police said this week that they’re still at a loss for a motive in the slaying of the “quiet, kind and loving” Father Henry Carr student, who moved to Toronto two years ago from Jamaica seek-

ing a better life. “From all accounts that we have, (Jarvis) was a wellliked young man and a good student,” 23 Division Supt. Ron Taverner said during an appeal for witnesses to his murder to come forward earlier this week. “He was not in any way involved in anything in the community that he shouldn’t have.” NUMBER ONE VOLUNTEER Described as the West Indian Volunteer Community Support Services’ “number one” volunteer, Jarvis held a special place in his heart for children and regularly helped out with the Jamestownbased organization’s homework program. It was while working as a councillor with the organization that Jarvis first met Al Bowen, senior pastor at Abundant Life Assembly – the Etobicoke church Jarvis attended faithfully every week – and that the two quickly became fast friends. “I remember I needed workers to help me go get

flowers from a very hot greenhouse. It was 110 F, and guess who was the best worker? Jarvis. Guess who never wilted in the heat? Jarvis. Guess who never complained? Jarvis,” Bowen said of Jarvis, remembering him as a “workhorse” and a “very, very, very incredible young man.” While media at Wednesday night’s vigil for Jarvis were instructed not to approach his family members, one of the teen’s 10 sisters spoke on the family’s behalf: “Jarvis was my step-brother, but I loved him like he was my blood brother. I loved him with all my heart, and he

Pastor Andrew King of Toronto Central SeventhDay Adventist knows all too well the toll this most recent spate of gun violence has taken on the families of the lost boys. Just three weeks ago, he presided over the funeral of Tyson Bailey. On Wednesday night he called for an end to the violence at Jarvis’ vigil. “It needs to stop. They’re taking our children one by one by one. Until we in the community come together from every facet of the community...things are not going to change. We need to take back our communities!” he boomed, to a chorus of ‘amens’ from the crowd. “We’ve got to make sure the message is strong and loud: we will not tolerate more killing!”

>>>from page 1 nity it serves,” he said. “These moves signify a commitment to content and gives us the opportunity to do a number of special things through the year.” “We want to be aggressive information leaders in Etobicoke. We want to serve a growing role as a catalyst for action in the community that brings positive change,” he said. “It’s a mouthful, but for us, it’s part of being a community partner.” On March 5, you’ll see a redesigned newspaper, with a few more pages than your Friday edition, with more colour and anchor features that you can follow on a weekly basis. “ We’ l l b e m a k i n g a strong point to delve into the issues of community life in Etobicoke on a regular basis,” said Etobicoke Guardian managing editor Clark Kim . “You’ll see other

features, like columns on transit and business – and a sports calendar as well.” It’s been a progressive few months at The Guardian . The newspaper launched www.EtobicokeGuardian. com under the parent www. insidetoronto.com website, designed a colourful new nameplate, and adopted Twitter and Facebook channels to extend its reach to Etobicoke residents in the way they’d like to be reached for community news and information. We’ve also added a wide range of marketing options, ranging from social media, video, blogging and website development. Please call Alison Fauquier at 416495-6618 for more information. As always, please let us know what you think. You can reach Guardian managing editor Clark Kim at 416-495-6526.
