DAVID NICKLE dnickle@insidetoronto.com An expansion of casino gambling anywhere in Toronto is no longer in the cards, after council voted to reject both a downtown casino and expansion of the Woodbine Racetrack into a full-blown casino in north Etobicoke. Council made the decision after a relatively swift debate at a special meeting Tuesday. M a y o r R o b Fo r d h a d attempted to cancel the meeting late last week, declaring a downtown casino dead, but 24 councillors pushed to hold the meeting anyway, to settle the matter.

Bishop Allen students take on philanthropic initiative to win $5K for charity of choice TAMARA SHEPHARD tshephard@insidetoronto.com Bishop Allen Academy’s Grade 10 students recently got a real-life lesson in philanthropy. During a six-week civics’ unit, more than 100 social science students took up the Youth and Philanthropic Initiative’s (YPI) project challenge — to learn about a social issue and to identify and research a local, grassroots charity that responds to that community need. Students set up a site visit at the charity, interviewed one of its staff and created a 10-minute presentation on the charity, its mission, goals, history, staff and volunteers, funding and future plans. YPI presents the winning student team with a $5,000 cheque for its charity. Yesterday, the Royal York Road Catholic high school’s top four teams competed for most compelling presentation before a judging panel of school staff and senior students before approximately 100 of their peers in the school’s auditorium. top prize Students Grace Martin, Antea Bobeto, Natasha Bruno, Rachel Italiano and Emily Hauck took the top prize, winning the grant for downtown Toronto-based Sketch — Working Arts for Street Involved and Homeless Youth. Sketch creates opportunities for street-involved and homeless youth ages 15-29 to engage in the arts in a cross-discipline studio environment in the community, including workshops, making art in the community, exhibiting and selling artwork and connecting to mentorship and apprenticeships in the arts industry. The teens, each sporting a different colour T-shirt with the Sketch logo, explained there are approximately 10,000 homeless youth in Toronto, with some 2,000 living on the street on any given night. They lauded Sketch’s funding model, which sees 80 per cent of its funds directed towards arts programs, and only nine per cent spent on administration. Sketch is not a drop-in, but a flexible program that can see youth participate full-time in the beginning, then come back until they’re 30, perhaps when needing support around challenges such as lost housing,

Alyson Tabbert, left, of the Youth in Philanthropy Initiative, presents Bishop Allen Academy students Rachel Italiano, Antea Bobeta, Grace Martin, Emily Hauck, and Natasha Bruno with a cheque for Sketch, a charity helping homeless youth. For the first time this year Grade 10 civics students worked with, researched and made a presentation on a local charity, with the best initiative awarded $5,000 by a panel of judges.

health or a mental health issue. “It’s exciting,” Sketch executive director Rudy Ruttimann said of students’ YPI win for Sketch. “We’re always very excited when young people choose us, whether because they have a passion for the arts or they know someone who could be a (Sketch participant). The appeal is art. Then they understand what art can do for people living homeless and marginalized. Then the kids also feel they want to be part of this. They appreciate expression can come from the arts.”

Never underestimate the power you have when... you speak up. You’ve given people information that can help them and people they know. – Alyson Tabbert, YPI representative

Sketch will use the $5,000 toward the design and installation of new furniture by its youth, in collaboration with a design school, for its new space, a studio that will be the largest tenant in the 75,000-squarefoot Artscape Young Space at Queen and Shaw streets when it opens next January. The three other student teams presented on their charities of choice: Etobicoke-based FAME (Family Association for Mental Health Everywhere), Etobicoke-

headquartered Meagan’s Walk, a pediatric brain tumours’ charity and Sheena’s Place, a downtown charity that supports people with eating disorders, linking them with hospital-based programs, schools, agencies, therapists and families. “We’re very proud of them,” Suzette Lains, a social studies teacher who worked the YPI program with her teacher colleagues Stephanie Meligrana, Rosa Marino and social studies school department head Ed Otten. “YPI contacted our principal (Adrian Dellamoro) and we loved the sound of it. More than 100 students participated. These are the presentations we thought deserved to go to the finals. The kids really did impress with the resources they used in their presentations.” Each finalist team incorporated video in its professional-calibre presentations. In its 10th year, YPI has engaged 30,000 students across Canada in learning about, and raising grant money for, more than 4,000 charities. Next month, YPI will have presented $1 million in grants across Canada. “Never underestimate the power you have when you get involved and speak up. You’ve given people information that can help them and people they know,” YPI’s Alyson Tabbert told students.

Spraying singles out gypsy moths, again Pest controlled, not eliminated: city TAMARA SHEPHARD tshephard@insidetoronto.com The spring sound of birds chirping isn’t the only noise expected to awaken some central Etobicoke residents late this week and again next week. A twin-engine helicopter is planned to fly 15 to 30 metres above the tree tops either Thursday or Friday between 5 and 7:30 a.m. to aerial spray the insecticide BTK in seven Etobicoke neighbourhoods where a gypsy moth outbreak threatens thousands of mature, majestic oak trees. The communities to be aerial sprayed are: Princess Margaret Boulevard and Ashford Drive; Royal York Road and Bloor Street West; Thorncrest Road and Thornbury Crescent; Herne Hill; Humber Valley Golf Course; The KingswayEdenbridge Drive and North and Valecrest drives. Local road closures will be in effect to minimize any potential risks associated with the low-flying helicopter. Notification signs will be posted. The gypsy moth is considered a major pest in North America whose caterpillars eat the leaves of trees, primarily oaks, making them more susceptible to disease and damage from other insects or weather-related factors. City officials do not expect to eliminate the gypsy moth, but rather to set it back, Kristjan Vitols, city supervisor of forest health care said Tuesday. “Success for us is to knock it back to tolerable levels so defoliation is not significant. The gypsy moth is always going to be present in the environment. It has not proven itself to be eradicable,” he said. Through aerial spraying, BTK is applied to the foliage of trees. Caterpillars must feed on the treated leaves for it to be effective. BTK attacks the digestive tract of gypsy moth caterpillars and kills them. BTK is a biological insecticide containing naturally occurring bacterium found on dead and decaying matter in the soil. When used as directed and sprayed by air, it is not considered a health risk to humans, the city reported. The city chose Thursday as Etobicoke’s first spray date, but it could be changed to Friday. Aerial spraying is weather-dependent and only done when the sky is clear and there is no wind. The city may cancel spray dates if weather conditions change. Affected residents may check

for updates at www.toronto.ca/trees/ gypsy-moth.htm or by calling 311. A second aerial spray will follow within three to seven days of the first. City officials did not expect to aerial spray BTK for seven to 10 years following the last aerial spray in 2008. “After the (gypsy moth population) crash in 2008, we saw insignificant amounts then all of a sudden, it was at outbreak levels after five years,” Vitols said. “I believe the mild winter of 2011-2012 played a key role in that situation playing out as it did. We’ve had two significant outbreaks in the City of Toronto in the last 10 years. It remains to be seen in the future how we’re able to deal with it.” In 2007, the city sprayed a small area in central Etobicoke, then sprayed a much larger area the following year to combat a wider spread gypsy moth outbreak. In March, two young sisters started a campaign to urge 130 of their Princess Gardens’ neighbours to help fight the voracious gypsy moth. Talise Taylor, 6, and her sister Breazzlyn, 4, issued a simple, yet urgent, message written in colourful marker in two child’s hands — “Please help/save our trees”. Talise and her mom, Tracey, had recently removed the egg sacks from their trees and that of a neighbour’s oak following advice from Steve Lukac of Glenwood Tree Service. Soon after the girls’ Save Our Trees’ campaign, Taylor said a neighbour reported to her that Lukac told him he had received calls from 23 neighbours wanting a quote to have the egg masses removed from their trees. Last week, the family had their oaks’ deep root fertilized at Lukac’s recommendation. Each gypsy moth egg sack contains as many as 500 eggs.

Doors Open creates connection with neighbourhood

T

he annual Doors Open event takes place again this weekend giving residents across the city access to culturally significant buildings within their own neighbourhood. It’s an excellent opportunity to learn more about the community by visiting the 150 local buildings with historical, architectural and social significance selected this year. Visit Applewood, The Shaver Homestead in Etobicoke, which is an example of a typical 19th century farmhouse. In North York, the Gibson House Museum built in 1851 in the Georgian Revival style of architecture will be open to visitors. Or step inside Fool’s Paradise, the former home of Canadian artist Doris McCarthy situated on the 12-acre property on the Scarborough Bluffs, which she bought back in 1939. New venues include the our view Toronto Police Service 11 Division built on the site of the Annual event building historic 1914 Carleton Village Public School. Scarborough Arts promotes is also welcoming visitors to its city’s history current home in a 1920s house in Harrison Estate Park. But Doors Open is more than just about exploring old buildings for the first time. The weekend event allows residents to better understand the history and fabric of their own community. For example, the interfaith communities of South Etobicoke have come together allowing residents to explore the diversity of faith communities by opening its doors to such buildings as the Bosnian Islamic Centre, Mimico Baptist Church and the Canadian Sufi Cultural Centre to name a few. The theme of Doors Open this year being “Creators, Makers and Innovators” also features many older buildings that have been “redesigned, reinvented and repurposed into modern 21st century spaces that host collaborative teams of imaginitive people who are creating new ways of thinking, making and doing.” It’s an exercise the whole community can be a part of beyond the Doors Open event where people can challenge themselves to view where they live differently and contribute creatively to make a positive impact in their neighbourhood. Doors Open runs from Saturday, May 25, to Sunday, May 26. Visit the city’s website at www.toronto.ca/ doorsopen/2013/ for a full list of venues and the specific hours open to the public.

Time for Ford Nation to call it quits

T

he trouble with writing a weekly column that appears on Thursday, is that when a mayor finds himself in allegedly hideous and frankly filthy trouble on the previous Friday, it’s tough to find something new to say. So it is with Mayor Rob Ford, and revelation last Friday of the cell phone video that according to two respected journalists at the Toronto Star alleges to show our mayor smoking crack cocaine. Earlier in the cycle, I might have joined the chorus of every other columnist working in Toronto media, and said it was time for the mayor to resign. I’ll take a slightly different tack, and speak directly to Ford Nation. It might be time, Ford Nation, to call it quits. Regardless of what happens with the video, it has come time to face some facts.

david nickle the city The mayor, when you elected him, came with a certain amount of baggage including a 1999 impaired driving conviction in Florida. There was a certain amount of baggage that you were willing to forgive, because you are a forgiving bunch. Some commentators say, in fact, that Rob Ford’s foibles have been a part of his charm to Ford Nation: that it shows him to be a regular guy, a guy that sometimes screws up, and not one of the elites. no more forgiving It is time, Ford Nation, to give up on forgiveness – at least inasmuch as that forgiveness translates to continued fealty, and worse, identification. Because Rob Ford is not like you.

You do not leave important work meetings to coach football; you don’t court disaster by ignoring potential conflicts-ofinterest in your job. You don’t, as a rule, embarrass yourselves, your family and your community. You are stand-up people, and you don’t need to stand up for this. In giving up on forgiving our mayor, you need not give up on the agenda he ran on. There are other good fiscally-conservative politicians in the wings – many of whom have assisted in our mayor’s fulfillment of his agenda this term. In 2014, you will likely have the opportunity to support one or more of them to continue that agenda. Call this, Ford Nation, your moment of clarity.

Metrolinx has not improved transit To the editor: Re: ‘Metrolinx CEO comments on transportation plans,’ Letters, May 16. This letter just about clarifies the problems Toronto is faced with, but in all of the time Metrolinx has been in operation, nothing has improved. If the truth be known, nothing will improve, as one only has to look at its accomplishments and just how much it has cost the poor taxpayers. We need subways – it’s the only way. The stupidity of wasting tax dollars on above-ground fixed rail operations is going backward, not forward. Bruce McCuaig of Metrolinx, cites a pile of information, but few specifics such as a potential new subway for Scarborough to replace the RT? W.D. Adamson

Business owners concerned station relocation could impact livelihood >>>from page 1 from its current location near Royal York Road. Instead it suggests the city include the potential relocation site at the intersection of Parklawn Drive and Lake Shore Boulevard, where Mr. Christie’s bakery is currently located, in an ongoing traffic management study. puzzled reaction The recent developments surrounding the proposed relocation has Kyra Trainor of the Mimico Residents Association puzzled. She contacted local city councillor Mark Grimes’ office for clarification. “We definitely have to figure out what’s going on with the file. It’s not very clear,” Trainor said last Friday. “To be honest, it’s a nonstarter for us. We have made it very clear the station cannot move.” Controversy arose in April when the city’s planning and

growth management committee approved a surprise motion from chair Peter Milczyn to study relocating the station 1.5 kilometres east to his ward as part of a plan to rezone the lands around the Mr. Christie’s bakery, slated to close at the end of the year. Grimes, who is not on the committee, said he was “blindsided” by the motion from his council colleague Milczyn. He insisted any relocation of Mimico GO station is “hands off”. Grimes response “I a m f l a b b e r g a s t e d Peter Milczyn would move a motion and not consult with local councillors or the community,” Grimes said, who represents EtobicokeLakeshore. Mi l c z y n s a i d h e w a s simply trying to discuss how to improve transit and insisted relocation of the Mimico station was only one

of the options he wanted studied.

Wasting money on a relocation for a GO station that’s been there forever is nonsense. – Rob Bozzo, business owner

“It’s a bit of a misnomer because my original request to staff was looking at options for GO stations in that area and one option was to move the current station or build a new station,” he said. “Fundamentally the issue is because the Mr. Christie’s bakery owned by Mondelez is going to close, which creates the opportunity to acquire land for a new GO station at Parklawn.” Milczyn said the point of his original motion was to get Metrolinx, which is carrying out $44 million in renovations to the Mimico

GO station, to provide feedback to the city on relocation. But according to the report presented at committee, the transit planning agency, which recently announced extended service for the entire Lakeshore GO Train line, didn’t respond to the city’s requests for consultation. “The key issue is engaging Metrolinx in a discussion on the potential opportunities to improve access to GO service routes for South Etobicoke,” he said. Metrolinx response Spokesperson Vanessa Thomas said Metrolinx has had frequent conversations with city staff on the Mimico station renovations which includes constructing a pedestrian tunnel and expanding the north passenger platform to accommodate 12-car trains. “Currently, we have no plans to build a GO Station

at the Parklawn location. Currently, we are working on upgrading Mimico Station,” Thomas wrote in an email to The Etobicoke Guardian. Local business owners remain concerned the station could relocate and significantly impact their livelihoods. commuter dependent Rob Bozzo who owns the San Remo Bakery, located at 374 Royal York Rd., said his business is dependent on GO train commuters and employees stopping in for a snack. “Wasting money on a relocation for a GO station that’s been there forever is nonsense,” Bozzo said, who was one of around 50 residents and community groups to write to the city opposing the idea. If the station is moved, Tim Troke said he would a l m o s t c e r t a i n l y m ove his media company from Mimico which he said most

of his employees make use of daily. “ We d e p e n d o n g e t ting talent anywhere from Oakville to Whitby so we need to be on that GO Train line,” Troke said, who owns Frogwater Media, located within walking distance from the station. Trainor said relocation makes no sense given new developments around the Mimico stop, including a new 26-storey condo tower project whose sales office is located in the old train station, as well as a recent proposal for 110 new townhouses south of the rail tracks. “The majority of people who live in Mimico have a connection to that GO station. People use it to get to downtown constantly, it is the heart of our community. It’s a commuter village,” she said.

One in three Canadian kids are left on the side of the rink In Canada, one in three families cannot afford to enrol their children in organized sport or recreation activities because of financial barriers (Vision Critical 2011). Six years ago, Marlee Stein wanted to learn to skate, but she didn’t think it would be possible coming from a family of four kids and facing the struggles of a parent battling illness. Through a family support service in her community, Marlee and her family were introduced to Canadian Tire Jumpstart. The Jumpstart program supported Marlee’s skating lessons and skate Canada membership through financial assistance. A year after lacing up her skates for the first time, Marlee decided to turn her desire to skate into a goal – to one-day join the Canadian Olympic Figure Skating team. Through Jumpstart, Marlee is able to continue her skating lessons and is working to achieve this dream. “Jumpstart helped me get the lessons I needed to enter some very challenging provincial and national figure skating competitions in Canada,” says Marlee Stein.

“With all the lessons I have taken, I hope it opens up opportunities to eventually become a part of the Canadian Olympic team.” “The benefits of kids participating in sports affects their entire lives,” says Johnny Misley, President, Canadian Tire Jumpstart Charities. “Jumpstart is dedicated to removing barriers so financially disadvantaged children can simply participate, and ultimately pusue their dreams.” Kids who are able to participate in organized sport and recreation,

outside school hours, gain many short and long term benefits including increased self esteem, greater self confidence, leadership skills, and better grades. Despite the financial hardships many Canadian families face, there is a way to get kids into the game, no matter what barrier. By covering the cost of registration, equipment and/or transportation, Canadian Tire Jumpstart has helped 570,000 (and counting) children like Marlee participate in the sport of their choice. Help kids from your community by visiting Canadian Tire, Sport Chek, Atmosphere, Mark’s and Canadian Tire Gas+ stores as well as Pita Pit locations throughout the month of May to donate $2 in exchange for a red ball, with 100 per cent of all donations going to help kids play. The May campaign will be celebrated on Jumpstart Day on Saturday, May 25, with fun activities taking place at participating Canadian Tire Retail stores across the country, including charity barbeque’s or GoClean waterless car washes. CYNTHIA REASON creason@insidetoronto.com Toronto’s Catholic trustees are set to debate a motion calling for the ban of GayStraight Alliance (GSA) clubs this week. The motion, submitted by Trustee Garry Tanuan (Scarborough) and seconded by John Del Grande (Scarborough/North York), challenges Bill 13, The Accepting Schools Act, a piece of provincial legislation passed last June that states “neither the board nor the principal shall refuse to allow a pupil to use the name gay-straight alliance or a similar name for an organization.” In his motion, which is set to come before the Toronto Catholic District School Board’s (TCDSB) monthly meeting this evening, Tanuan argues that by enforcing Bill 13, “the provincial government is breaking the law by

violating section 93 of the Constitution, which enshrines the denominational rights of Catholic schools.” “Gay-Straight Alliance clubs promote a positive view of homosexual activity, which undermines Catholic teaching on chastity and marriage,” Tanuan’s motion states. “The church’s solution to bullying is being ignored and church teaching is being undermined by these clubs.” In an email statement to The Etobicoke Guardian, Education Minister Liz Sandals said it is her expectation all school boards in the province comply with the Accepting Schools Act, including the support of GSA clubs in any school where a student requests one. “It is our responsibility to help ensure all students feel safe and welcomed at school. That’s why the Act states that neither the board nor the principal can refuse to allow students to have a gay-straight

alliance or a similarly named club,” she said. “Catholic school boards and stakeholders have demonstrated leadership and support in providing safe, positive and inclusive environments for all students. I know that Catholic values of acceptance and love make them natural allies in the fight against bullying. I hope the board will continue to foster an accepting environment for all students.” In place of GSAs, Tanuan is renewing calls for the creation of Respecting Differences clubs, which TCDSB trustees endorsed as the board’s “antibullying solution” at a special board meeting March 7, 2012. Respecting Differences is a club template proposed by the Ontario Catholic School Trustees’ Association in consultation with Catholic bishops.

The TCDSB’s monthly meeting takes place tonight at the Catholic Education Centre, 80 Sheppard Ave. E., at 8 p.m.

In the four short months since Toronto police’s 22 Division launched its Catch-22 Tuesday program, a third of those profiled as south Etobicoke’s most wanted have been arrested – including one man wanted for more than a year on charges of attempted murder and kidnapping. Of the 15 men whose names, mug shots, and alleged crimes 22 Division officers have broadcast weekly over both traditional and non-traditional media over the last 15 weeks, Det. Pat McGrade said 10 of those have been arrested – an impressive 66 per cent arrest rate he said just goes to show the Catch-22 Tuesday program really works. “It’s been so successful because we’re going out beyond the traditional medias,” he said, noting that Catch-22 Tuesday profiles

are sent out weekly to 22 Division’s 525 Twitter followers, 519 Facebook friends, as well as to Etobicoke Guardian readers. “I think because we’re using both traditional and non-traditional media, we’re getting our message out to thousands and thousands more people than we would with just one little blip on a news release.” first profile Twenty-two Division’s first – and most serious – most wanted was 25-year-old Marko Tojcic, profiled back on Feb. 5. Also wanted by the RCMP, Tojcic was being sought by police for more than a year – on charges of kidnapping, forcible confinement, attempted murder, aggravated assault, robbery, break and enter, assault with a weapon, and possession of a prohibited device – after being accused of

kidnapping a 25-year-old man in 2011 and allegedly beating him repeatedly over a period of five days. McGrade said that, after being wanted for more than a year, Tojcic was arrested just weeks after his name, mug shot and charges were broadcast as a Catch-22 Tuesday most wanted person. “When we got his picture out, it was literally within probably three weeks that we had information that led to his arrest,” McGrade said. Of the other nine arrests 22 Division officers have made under the Catch-22 program, some have been the result of Crime Stoppers tips, while others have resulted from calls from lawyers. For more information, visit the 22 Division Facebook page or follow @the22news on Twitter.

newspaper headlines for the past week. The Guardian has not viewed the alleged video and cannot verify its authenticity. “Mr. Ford has helped our students rise to the challenge and realize their potential as both football players and young men,” Bruce Rodrigues, the board’s director of edu-

cation said in a statement Wednesday afternoon. “This decision was based on what is best for our students, our school and the Don Bosco community.” Rodrigues did not say in his statement whether Ford will be prohibited from coaching football at other Toronto Catholic schools this fall.

Ford’s office did not immediately respond Wednesday afternoon to a Guardian request for comment. Ford has been criticized throughout his term as mayor for missing Toronto council and committee meetings in favour of coaching Don Bosco’s Eagles’ football team.

no more football: Rob Ford coaches the Don Bosco high school football team on the day after winning the race to become the next mayor of Toronto in 2010. in a statement yesterday, the Catholic board announced Ford’s removal as team coach. Staff file photo/NICK PERRY

Gaming expansion at Woodbine opposed by Toronto councillors >>>from page 1 town casino. Ford moved a motion that would cancel the downtown casino, but keep the ball rolling on letting the province establish a second casino at the Woodbine Racetrack. He rested the blame for the failure of the downtown casino on the shoulders of Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne. “One year ago the government of Ontario asked Toronto to host a new casino in this great city,” he said. “Since then Toronto has spent a year grappling with the issues. We carried the load and did a lot of the hard work. It now appears that Premier Wynne has chosen a different direction.” He continued, “I will not support a casino that is not in the best interest of Toronto. Hosting a casino in Toronto that does little to address Toronto’s needs and makes

the provincial government richer is not in the interests of Torontonians.” Council rejected Ford’s motion, with a vote of 13-31, instead supporting Trinity-Spadina Councillor Mike Layton’s motions that would reject a new casino downtown, and oppose gaming expansion in the C2 zone where the Woodbine Racetrack is located. That last vote carried by a narrower margin — 24-20. Nick Eaves, President a n d C E O o f Wo o d b i n e Entertainment, said the vote was disappointing. tough for woodbine Woodbine faces a tough time, he said, if the province locates its casino outside Toronto in Markham or Vaughan. That would create a competition that the racetrack couldn’t necessarily meet

without its own tables and slot machines. “We had over 200 people here showing their support,” said Eaves. “We sent 600 letters, there’s a petition signed. I feel most badly for those people whose jobs depend on Woodbine’s racetrack.” Layton, however, pointed out that council’s rejection of gambling was a matter of principle — and noted that Woodbine would be able to maintain its existing operations. “The motion put forward reflects that this wasn’t just about a hosting fee — this was about the impact on the citizens of Toronto,” he said. “We don’t want the province to put forward a policy that encourages more people to become addicted to gambling.”

Mimico hockey stars face-off in round two of NHL playoffs A couple of Mimico residents who went to the same elementary school, the same high school, and played for the same Jr. B lacrosse team are now facing each other across the ice in round two of the Stanley Cup playoffs. We are talking, of course, about Detroit Red Wings

defenceman Brendan Smith and Chicago Blackhawks forward Dave Bolland. Detroit has a 2-1 lead in the series and hosts game four tonight. Smith, 24, has stepped up his scoring in the playoffs with two goals and two assists in his 10 post season games, thus far, after nabbing eight

assists in 34 games in the regular season. Bolland, who turns 27 June 5, meanwhile, missed Chicago’s opening round 4-1 series win over the Minnesota Wild due to a lower body injury and has not collected a point in his three games against Detroit.

Transportation minister weighs in on plans prior to Metrolinx funding meeting RAHUL GUPTA rgupta@insidetoronto.com As Metrolinx gets set to release recommendations for new taxes and fees at its meeting on Monday, May 27, Ontario Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure Glen Murray said he was not surprised municipalities such as Toronto opted not to endorse a single revenue tool. In an interview Tuesday, Murray said he and Premier Kathleen Wynne had expected dissent from some politicians, regarding their opinions of the 11 proposed taxes and fees Metrolinx sought feedback on. Those revenue tools would raise $2 billion annually to pay for the completion of the $50 billion Big Move transit plan for the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area

Glen Murray

(GTHA). “If you go into a conversation only looking for people to agree with you, you’ll be most sadly disappointed,” said Murray. “I think there have been some very good ideas put forward by most municipalities and there’s been some, as we expected,

who haven’t agreed, and we respect that.” During a marathon Toronto City Council meeting during the second week of May, councillors voted to reject staff recommendations on the Metrolinx revenue tools and to support a Scarborough subway line to replace a fully-funded light rail transit line already agreed to by the province and Metrolinx. Murray said the City of Toronto has the authority to build new transit projects separate from the Master Agreement, and the City of Toronto Act allows them to enact new revenue tools to pay for whatever projects they desire. 2014 Forester Earns new IIHS 2013 Top Safety Pick+ rating Subaru has announced the all-new 2014 Forester has received a Top Safety Pick+ (TSP+) award from the U.S. Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). The 2014 Subaru Forester is the first vehicle to ace every aspect of the challenging small overlap front crash test conducted by the IIHS. The Forester is the only one of 13 small SUVs to earn an overall rating of good in the test.  This is not the first time that the Forest-

er has stood out in a new IIHS crash test. When the Institute first rated small SUVs for side protection in 2003, the Subaru model performed the best and was one of only two vehicles to earn good ratings. This award builds on Subaru’s safety reputation and is the first IIHS designation for 2014 model year Subaru vehicles.  Subaru is the only manufacturer with 2013 IIHS Top Safety Pick for all models and the only brand with IIHS Top Safety

How to conduct a

test drive When shopping for a new vehicle, some drivers know exactly which model of car they want to buy, while others are not so sure. Though price and features often carry the most weight when making a decision, a test drive can narrow down the prospects as well. It is important to take your time on a test drive and not feel rushed. There are many other tips that can help you find the right buy. Ÿ Pick a time when you feel focused. Doing a test drive on your lunch hour or right before you're expected at a meeting or carpool is not the ideal time to make an assessment of the vehicle. Rather, pick a time when you are well rested and well fed and able to concentrate on the job at hand. Ÿ Avoid distractions. Sometimes schedules conflict, and you may have to bring other people, including children, along on the test drive. However, when possible, only include those who will be driving the vehicle. This way you will be able to focus on the car and not worry about what the other passengers are doing as well. It is also perfectly acceptable to ask

Ÿ

Ÿ

Ÿ

Ÿ

the salesperson to be quiet during the test drive and reserve explaining the features and attributes for before or after the drive. Research the vehicle. It helps to go into a test drive already knowing the majority of the specifications on the vehicle and what the car or truck is capable of doing. This way you'll be able to tell if the sales information you are receiving is accurate or embellished. Try out different terrains. Most test drives consist of a short jaunt to and from the dealership. Salespeople also may recommend certain routes, but these could be tailored to get the best response out of the car. But if you're familiar with the area take a test drive on your terms. Try different road surfaces and speeds. Also be sure to make turns to gauge the turning radius. This can be as simple as making some turns in a parking lot. Change lanes. Take the opportunity to change lanes so you can judge the visibility of the vehicle. Adjust the seating. This will help you

A test drive can tell potential car buyers a lot about a vehicle. Conduct a test drive when you can devote your undivided attention to the task.

determine the comfort level of the vehicle and if it will fit your frame. You don't want the car to be uncomfortable to drive. Ÿ Test the radio and the climate control. See how the car functions, including whether it takes a long or short time

to reach a comfortable temperature. Ÿ Bring a passenger. If you won't be distracted, have a friend or family member ride along and pay attention to the things you might be missing while focusing on the road. These may include road noise, sus-

pension and the general comfort of the vehicle. A test drive is an important component of buying a car. It can often make or break a sale, so be sure to include it on your must-do list. – MS

2013 Honda Civic Sedan leads all small cars in safety ratings The 2013 Honda Civic Sedan, Canada’s best selling passenger car for fifteen consecutive years, has received the highest possible overall safety ratings from both the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). The 2013 Civic Sedan recently received the top Five-Star Overall Vehicle Score in NHTSA’s New Car Assessment Program (NCAP), and the highest possible rating of Top Safety Pick+ from the IIHS, including a top score of GOOD in the new small overlap frontal collision test. Honda leads with every one of its tested model year 2013 vehicles earning a Top Safety Pick or Top Safety Pick+ rating from the IIHS. The 2013 Honda Civic Sedan and Coupe are the first and only small cars to earn the highest safety rating of TOP SAFETY PICK+ from the IIHS, and the NCAP Five-Star Overall Vehicle Score for the Civic Sedan further separating Civic from the competition in safety

ratings performance. The 2013 Accord also earned these high safety ratings in the midsize segment. The Civic Sedan, significantly reengineered for 2013, is equipped with Honda’s next generation Advanced Compatibility Engineering (ACE) body structure, which plays a critical role in making Civic the first small car to earn a TOP SAFETY PICK+ crash safety rating, and the first to earn the highest rating of GOOD in the IIHS’ new small overlap frontal crash test (sometimes called a ‘narrow offset’ test). This aggressive test is designed to simulate what happens when the front corner of a vehicle collides with another vehicle or an object such as a tree or utility pole at high speed. The reinforced ACE body structure found on the 2013 Civic further enhances frontal crash energy through a wider range of these offset and oblique collision scenarios. – Metroland Media Group

FIRST LOOK: HONDA GROM 2014 Part mini-bike, part motorcycle. It blends a smallish patented frame and 12-inch wheels with full-fledged motorcycle parts for an oddly appealing dwarfish style accented with a tough urban edge.

The frame architecture has enabled efficient storage of PGM-FI-related components and electrical parts inside the tank cover without reducing fuel capacity (5.5 litres). The wheelbase is a snug 1200 mm and the curb weight should work out to just over 100 kg.

The Grom translates its estimated 10 hp and 8 lb/ft of torque through a traditionally motorcycle-style clutch-operated fourspeed gearbox designed to blend a balance of lively around-town response and easy top gear travel.

Honda’s 2014 Grom is a little bike with big attitude and a fresh, new way to add some fun, practicality, independence and style to your life. The Grom features a compact frame, 12-inch wheels, a 125 cc engine and street-legal big bike components.

■ 411 ON THE GROM: The world’s biggest motorcycle company seems determined to be the world’s busiest as well. Enter the 2014 Grom, Honda’s latest little bike with big bike attitude. As hinted at by the MSX125 name, the Grom is powered by a 125 cc two-valve, air-cooled single-cylinder engine. The motor is based on one of Honda’s well-proven power units, recently employed in the Wave 125i with nearly a million sales globally. The 28.6mm diameter bore exhaust pipe encourages power output in the mid- and upper-rpm ranges and the muffler uses a dual-layer construction with a resin outer shield. Complementing the powerplant, a compact chassis features a sturdy mono-backbone steel frame, inverted front fork, monoshock rear suspension, hydraulic disc brakes front and rear, and lightweight 12-inch cast aluminum wheels sporting wide, low profile tires. Honda has applied for four patents based on the innovative split structure tank cover and frame, proof of just how serious they are about this new global small bike. But while the Grom is small enough to be nimble and manageable, it comes with a surprising selection of standard sized motorcycle parts and

big bike features. The Grom mounts a combined projector headlight, probably the most prominent styling feature of this bug-eyed bike, while a bright LED taillight marks the rear of the bike’s stubby silhouette. Riders look down on a compact and modern LCD digital dash complete with speedometer, twin trip meters, fuel gauge and clock. And the low 765mm scooter-like seat height makes the Grom manageable for any size rider. With its small size and portability, all kinds of customers will be checking out the Grom, as either a perfect pit bike, motorhome accessory or urban runabout. But small as it may be this is no outof-a-box department store minibike. Honda components, quality and reliability will add reassurance to a new way to add fun and independence to a young and vital lifestyle. Yeah, with accent on the “young. To quote the Honda U.S.A. site “with your own wheels, you can bag the bus and forget about having to beg for rides from your friends or— shudder—your Mom. Honda Canada will be releasing prices and more details soon. Check it out for yourself, available at Honda dealers in the4 coming months.. – Rob Beintemay Metroland Media Group

The Porsche 918 Spyder A unique combination of performance and efficiency The Porsche 918 Spyder embodies the essence of the Porsche idea. It combines pedigree motor racing technology with excellent everyday versatility, and maximum performance with minimum consumption. The task faced by the development team was to create the super sports car for the next decade with a highly efficient and powerful hybrid drive. Developing the car from scratch with a clean sheet of paper allowed Porsche engineers to come up with a no-compromise concept. The entire car was designed around the hybrid drive. The 918 Spyder therefore demonstrates the potential of the hybrid drive to a degree never before seen: the parallel improvement of both efficiency and performance without one being at the cost of the other. This is the idea that has made the Porsche 911 the most successful sports car in the world for 50 years. In short, the 918 Spyder will act as the gene pool for the Porsche sports cars of the future. The 918 Spyder reveals its close links to motorsport in a variety of ways. It has been designed, developed and produced

by Porsche engineers who build racecars, in cooperation with series production specialists. A great deal of insight gained from the development of Porsche race cars for the Le Mans 24 hours in 2014 is thus integrated into the 918 Spyder – and vice versa. A key message of the 918 Spyder is that the hybrid drive from Porsche is a plus for no-compromise driving dynamics. Drivers can experience this thanks to the unique all-wheel drive concept with a combination of combustion engine and electric motor on the rear axle and the second electric motor on the front axle. The Porsche 918 Spyder also has the potential to break many records. The current lap time for the Nurburgring-Nordschleife is 7:14 minutes. This time was achieved in the presence of international journalists during test drives in September 2012 – more than a year before start of production. The 918 Spyder prototype was therefore approximately 20 seconds quicker than the Porsche Carrera GT. – Metroland Media Group
