these invaders from establishing populations in the Great Lakes. “They can cause quite a bit of danger,” said Sarah Chadwick, the invasive species spokesperson for the OFAH. “There are no established populations in the Great Lakes, and we want to keep it that way.” However, there have been reported sightings of Asian carp as close to home as Lake Ontario, Chadwick added. Asian carp have the capability

to destroy aquatic ecosystems while negatively impacting the environment and economy. “They could damage sport and commercial fishing in Ontario, which brings in millions of dollars,” Chadwick said. Ford promises customer service CYNTHIA REASON creason@insidetoronto.com Ford Nation turned out at the polls in full force Monday, sending Michael Ford to Toronto City Council with a strong mandate to continue the Ford family legacy in Etobicoke North. Ford, the 22-year-old nephew of former one-term mayor and longtime Etobicoke North councillor Rob Ford, won the Ward 2 byelection to replace his late uncle by a wide margin – securing 69.5 per cent of the vote, despite a wide field of 11 other candidates. “I look forward to heading down to city hall in the coming days and getting to work on what we talked about for two and a half months – customer service,” Ford told supporters during his victory speech Monday night at his campaign headquarters on Rexdale Boulevard. “When you call my office, I will be there at the other end of the phone and I will be at your door to serve you, just like my great Uncle Doug does and my Uncle Rob did.” Ford’s win at the polls maintains Ford Nation’s nearly >>>FORD, page 5

Beauty of breast cancer survivors Happy Simcoe Day! highlighted in glamour calendar Five facts about Maj.-Gen. John Graves Simcoe who is honoured with a long weekend in August Maj.-Gen. John Graves Simcoe, named the first lieutenant-governor of Upper Canada in 1791. He founded York, which later became Toronto.

CYNTHIA REASON creason@insidetoronto.com For Etobicoke’s Susan Fulford, the opportunity to participate in After Breast Cancer’s (ABC) SHE Thrives calendar photo shoot last year was about paying it forward. Diagnosed with breast cancer six years ago as a 46-year-old single mom, Fulford said it was a chance encounter with a kind stranger on the eve of her own double mastectomy in 2010 that inspired her to want to give back as an ambassador for ABC – a charity that provides breast cancer survivors in need with free prosthetic breasts and specialized bras. “It was four days before my surgery and I was out at a store on Bloor Street looking at scarves and blouses with high necks – things I could wear after the mastectomy. A lovely woman working at the store came forward and asked if she could help,” Fulford said, noting she felt compelled to tell the clerk her story. “When I went back into the change room, she followed me in, shut the door, pulled off her wig, and just looked at me and said ‘You’re not alone.’ After that, the two of us had a big cry in the change room and hugged each other. “I get choked up just thinking about it now,” she added. “In that moment, this wonderfully giving woman was very compassionate and shared her humanity with me so that I wouldn’t feel alone.” Fast forward six years, and Fulford said she hopes sharing her own survival story as an ABC ambassador and SHE Thrives calendar girl will help other breast cancer survivors combat their own feelings of isolation, while at the same time helping to raise awareness of and support for ABC’s charitable works. Now in its third year, ABC’s SHE Thrives calendar photo shoot saw 12 “courageous” breast cancer graduates treated earlier this month to a full day of pampering by a team of celebrity stylists, designers, hair and make-up artists – all in prepara-

He ended slavery in Canada before it was abolished in the British Empire. There were no slaves in Upper Canada by 1810 due to his efforts.

His most-visible legacy is seen in Toronto’s grid system of streets that run north/south and east/west.

He was fundamental in establishing institutions such as courts, trial by jury, English common law and freehold land tenure. Concerned about defence and in ill health, he left the colony in 1796 and eventually became governor of Santo Domingo (Dominican Republic) and later commander of the Western District in England. Appointed commanderin-chief for India in 1806, he died before he could take the position.

tion for a glamorous photo shoot at scenic Sunnyside Park. Images of each of this year’s ambassadors – Sandra Carusi, Susan Lunn, Svetlana Dvoretskaia, Eva Karpati, Donna Toulmin, Posy Bowerman, Lucy Santoro, Glennie Hepkin, Olga Lambert, Connie Malonda, Amanda Gingrich and Laurel Shaw – are now being compiled into a 2017 fundraising calendar and coffee table book, which will be unveiled at ABC’s upcoming Pink Diamond Gala in September 2016, said ABC founder Alicia Vianga. “All of these women’s stories are inspirational and motivational, and they all come from different walks of life: they’re stay-at-home moms, lawyers, media personalities,” Vianga said. “It just goes to show that breast cancer touches us all, and we hope everyone will get something out of reading their

stories in the calendar.” Fulford said she hopes that by sharing her story, she will help encourage more people and companies to support After Breast Cancer in its quest to create “positive change” in women’s lives after treatment. “I support many organizations, but (ABC’s) SHE Thrives campaign is the most fun by far. What they do is celebrate your inner beauty through creating exterior beauty – and that’s so important for so many women with breast cancer,” she said. “What they say is, ‘You know what, we want to celebrate you and who you are now in this life, in this journey. We want to make you beautiful because you are beautiful. It’s your inner beauty that radiates out and all we want to do is highlight that.’”

Celebrate Simcoe Day by having fun in Toronto

WRitE uS

T

he coming long weekend is known as Simcoe Day and now is a good time to learn a little bit more about Upper Canada’s first lieutenantgovernor and the founder of our city. John Graves Simcoe is honoured across the province with a lake, county and more streets than we could ever mention. But it is only Toronto that celebrates the first Monday in August as Simcoe Day. The August long weekend holiday has many other names across Ontario and Canada ranging from the fairly bland civic holiday to the City of Vaughan’s Benjamin Vaughan Day and the City of Ottawa’s Colonel By Day. Simcoe, though, deserves a special place in the hearts of Torontonians. Named Upper Canada’s lieutenant governor in 1791, he founded York, which later became Toronto as the capital city, and also had a key role in naming Scarborough OuR ViEW because the bluffs reminded his wife Elizabeth of Scarborough, Simcoe has England. Though only lieutenant goverspecial place nor until 1796, his accomplishwere many, including in our hearts ments taking a strong stand against slavery and banning it in Upper Canada years before it was abolished across the entire British Empire. He also laid out Toronto’s famous grid street system of north-south and eastwest roads, earning the thanks to this day of those travelling through and around the city. So how do we celebrate him some 230 years after his time as lieutenant governor ended? Well, like all long weekends in Toronto, we have fun. There’s numerous events set for our city this weekend, many drawing huge crowds of both local residents and tourists. There’s the Toronto Caribbean Carnival on this weekend, which features the King and Queen competition Thursday night at Lamport Stadium and then the Grand Parade Saturday, from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. at Lake Shore Boulevard and Exhibition Place. Also, there’s the 15th annual Scarborough Rotary Ribfest from Friday through to Monday at Thomson Park and the Veld Music Festival at Downsview Park Saturday and Sunday. And if you’d like to step back to a time closer to Simcoe’s, you can take part in Simcoe Day activities Monday at Fort York. Whatever you do, have fun and stay safe whether you are in the city, travelling the highways or enjoying Ontario’s lakes and wilderness. newsroom ph:

Michael Ford continues family’s political dynasty What with all the sound and fury south of the border Monday night as Democratic Party conventioneers girded their loins for what could be a worldchanging political battle royale with the Trump family, it would be easy to have missed the quiet, civilized affair that ushered the late Rob Ford’s nephew Michael into that family’s office at Toronto City Hall. America may have a stark choice ahead of it – but the voters in Ward 2 (Etobicoke North) made their choice a long time ago, and on July 25 they simply confirmed it. The Ford family – first the late Rob Ford, then his brother Doug Ford, and now Michael – are the dynasty of choice for Toronto’s northwest. Nothing, not even Rob Ford’s toxic, drug-andalcohol-fuelled meltdown during his single term as mayor, seems to be able to shake that loyalty. And so it comes to pass

david nickle the city that Toronto Council has a new member, maybe not the same but quite similar to the last two members, in Michael Ford, the 22-yearold son of Rob and Doug’s sister Kathy. By all accounts, Michael Ford is a bit different than his uncles politically, although it is early to say: he hadn’t yet completed a single term as a school trustee before Rob Ford’s death necessitated his candidacy in the Ward 2 byelection. He has developed a reputation in that time as a consensus-builder, curious and prone to evidencebased decision-making. He is said to admire Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. If this is so, it will be a relief to Mayor John Tory, who also seems to admire Trudeau.

Since Rob Ford’s death earlier this year, Tory has governed without a real critic on the right. If the Ford family had sent Doug Ford back into the Ward 2 trenches, Tory would have been faced with having not only a critic, but also his most formidable foe in the 2014 municipal election. It is possible that Michael Ford will grow into that role. On election night, Michael Ford’s grandmother Diane opined that he might one day follow in his uncle’s footsteps and become mayor himself. But it will be a while, likely, before the new councillor for Ward 2 moves into that part of the Ford brand, because so far he’ll be doing the work that established the family in Etobicoke to begin with and has endeared them all to those constituents: which is to say, answering phone calls, showing up at doorsteps, solving small problems definitively and

optionally, dealing with large problems at a policy level. Michael Ford’s Uncle Rob treated that last element of the brand extremely optionally. Even as mayor, he paid policy scant attention – focussing on keeping taxes low, pointing out waste and gathering political capital as much from the votes he lost at council as the ones that he won. There seems to be hope that Michael Ford will be different in that regard, and examine the needs of his constituents collectively as well as individually. Because let’s face it: the voters of Ward 2 have collectively done much to elevate three generations of Fords to public office. It will be interesting to see how the latest generation repays that loyalty.

Ford victory keeps family in Ward 2 seat since 2000 >>>from page 1 16-year stronghold on the ward. According to the City of Toronto website, with all 31 polls reporting – Ford garnered 6,534 votes, runner-up Jeff Canning got 1,918 votes, Christopher Strain got 354 votes and Chloe-Marie Brown got 152 votes. Etobicoke Nor th has now been represented by a member of the Ford family at Toronto council since Rob Ford first won the Ward 2 seat in November 2000 – a feat he would repeat in both the 2003 and 2006 municipal elections, before going on to win the Toronto mayoralty in 2010. After his turbulent tenure as mayor – during which time his older brother Doug took over the reins in Etobicoke North – Rob Ford took up the Ward 2 mantle again in 2014 after being diagnosed with a rare form of cancer and dropping out of the mayoralty race. He died at age 46 on March 22, leaving vacant the coun-

cil seat he won with 58.75 per cent of the vote just 17 months before. With Monday’s win, Ford

becomes the third Ford family member to hold the Ward 2 seat. “Tonight (Monday), more

than ever, we miss him,” Michael said. “Over the last two and a half months, I’ve been out across the ward in

every corner of our community, and they all gave me the same message: ‘If you’re like your Uncle Rob, if you show up, you have our support.’ That’s exactly what I’m going to do. I’m going to carry on his legacy.” Before resigning from the Toronto District School Board (TDSB) May 3 to pursue his the Ward 2 seat at Toronto council, Ford served as Etobicoke North trustee for 18 months – during which time he also acted as the TDSB’s vice-chair of finance, co-chair of the Parent Involvement Advisory and as a member of the budget committee. After stepping down from those posts, Ford campaigned for city council on a threepronged platform strikingly similar to that made famous by his controversial uncle – with a Ford Nation-friendly emphasis on ‘customer service’ and ‘keeping taxes low’. “I will continue the benchmark set by my family – if you ask me for help, I will

do everything I can to help you. I will call you back, I will return your messages, and I will come straight to your door to make sure you get the excellent level of service you deserve,” Ford is quoted on his campaign website. “The people of Toronto work hard for their money, and have given us their trust in spending it. We need to be accountable to them and we need to be as careful with spending their money as we would our own.” Other registered candidates in the Ward 2 byelection were Stacey Agard, Kevin Clarke, Chai Kalevar, Annette Lubinski , Christopher Noor, Glen Smith, Ken Street and Jimmy Talpa. Etobicoke North voters also cast their ballots in a byelection to choose Ford’s trustee successor at the TDSB. Avtar Minhas was elected for Toronto District School Board’s Ward 1 position.

Before You Spend Thousands on a New Roof… The Integrity Roof System

What Risks Do You Face? According to the Better Business Bureau, which tracks the ‘reputable’ roofing companies, roofing is at or near the top of the list for customer enquiries and complaints for the last five years in a row. Homeowners with limited experience in roof replacement rely on the roofing contractor to recommend the proper specifications. This process becomes confusing because there is no regulation in the industry, and each contractor recommends a different job. What you should know about roof surface or roof deck preparation: The roof deck is the structural surface over which your roofing materials are applied. All roof boards and/or plywood must be fastened securely to the rafters, and damaged or rotten wood must be replaced. Your attic should be inspected before the work starts to uncover potential problems. A bad roof surface allows the nails to push up through the shingles, causing leaks. What you should know about underlayment: A complete underlay system should be applied before your shingles are installed. There are two types of roofing underlay, waterproof and water resistant. Waterproof underlay is needed in areas most vulnerable to leaks: the eaves edge of the roof; in valleys, at dormer sides, around chimneys and around skylights. Water resistant underlay, often called “tar paper”, is needed on the remaining roof area. Water resistant underlay protects the roof surface in a storm situation where a few shingles blow off, but cannot be replaced immediately. What you should know about ventilation: Improper attic venting is a common cause of early shingle failure, and your product warranty requires that your attic have proper ventilation. Venting consists of intake and exhaust. To facilitate proper air flow, your attic needs intake vents located in the overhang and exhaust vents at the roof peak. A balanced venting system is required; otherwise air will be pulled from your house. An inspection of your attic is essential to present appropriate and complete venting solutions. What you should know about shingle quality: All shingles are not the same. Estimators should include at least three grades of shingles and inform you of the real expected shingle life. In addition to their aesthetic appeal, better quality shingles often provide you with the

Q A

Is it possible to reduce my daughter’s hay fever symptoms before school starts? Yes, your daughter’s hay fever symptoms may be reduced and treated using naturopathic approaches. The approach involves distinguishing hay fever symptoms from common cold symptoms. Hay fever symptoms may include runny nose, nasal congestion, watery eyes, red eyes, sneezing, coughing, itchy nose, itchy roof of mouth, itchy throat, swollen eye lids, postnasal drip and fatigue.

Almost every hay fever symptom has a similar symptom that simulates common cold symptoms. Proper diagnosis is essential for a lasting recovery. Once identified as hay fever, it must be treated with an anti-hay fever therapy not a band-aid treatment which usually nurses and strengthen the presence of hay fever. Treating hay fever symptoms must be hinged on the time of the year such as Tree pollen, which is common in early spring and in your case, it could be Ragweed pollen, which is common in fall. The treatment must take in consideration a proper diagnosis and the elimination of certain food items plus proper naturopathic treatment suitable for children. Starting early may give your child better chances reducing her symptoms. Should you have any questions, please contact Dr. Srajeldin ND at clinic@live.com

New program provides emergency mortgage loans to homeowners On November 1, 2013, Expert Mortgage launched the “85Alive”program in Ontario. The concept was simple: as long as you had a pulse, Expert Mortgage would provide you with a home equity loan, up to 85 percent of the value of your property. No job required. Bad credit, OK. The reason why Expert Mortgage could offer a “no questions asked” lending program, while the major banks could not, is that they represent over 200 private lenders who lend strictly on property value. These subprime lenders specialize in mortgage clients who have had some bad luck, and need a helping hand until they get back on their feet. The program has been so successful that Expert Mortgage can barely keep up with the volume of calls. To help fund this unexpectedly large number of borrowers, it has partnered up with dozens more private lenders.

Licensed Mortgage Agent Puneet Garg, Expert Mortgage’s “85-Alive” representative for the GTA Region, says, “We’re seeing mostly homeowners behind on mortgage and property taxes. The banks are refusing to restructure their loans. Many of these people have lost jobs due to the bad economy... or they’re self-employed. Unless you are a perfect applicant, the bank doesn’t want to talk to you.” But not everyone condones Expert Mortgage’s easy lending criteria. A local real estate agent with 25 years of experience, who has asked to remain anonymous, says, “When this market turns down, it’s going to get ugly! It’s utter financial suicide for Expert Mortgage to be giving money away so easily to clients without the ability to make payments. I’d be surprised if they’re still in business five years from now.” Nonetheless, homeowners

like Anita P. don’t see a problem with the program. When questioned on how she plans on making payments on her mortgage when she has no income, Anita responds, “We were four months behind on our mortgage and they saved our house. My husband has been unemployed for nine months. He won’t be unemployed forever. We used the 85-Alive loan to pay off all our debt. We also had $25,000 left over that we put in the bank for emergencies. And to make life easy, they worked it out so we have no mortgage payments for 12 months.” For more details on the ”85-Alive” program, contact Puneet Garg, Mortgage Agent 647-852-4274. www.TalkToPuneet.ca

special report

The bighead carp, part of the Asian carp family, is an invasive species. Others include silver, grass and black carp. Common carp is also an invasive species, but not part of the Asian carp family.

Wetlands, forests, birds at risk as invasive species start to spread >>>from page 1 increase the murkiness of the water making it difficult for native fish to find food. Grass carp specifically destroy wetlands that are key habitats for native species. “It’s important to educate the public on what they look like,” Chadwick said. “Our mandate is education and awareness.” Bighead and silver carp have spread the most aggressively through the U.S. and pose the greatest threat to the Great Lakes. The bighead can be identified by its small scales with dark blotches, short dorsal fin and eyes below the centre of its body; the silver carp has small, shiny scales; the black carp has large dark scales in a crosshatched pattern, and a pointed snout; the grass carp also has a short dorsal fin, and large, dark crosshatched scale pattern. Brought to North America in the 1960s and ‘70s, Asian carp are often mistaken for common carp, Chadwick said. Unlike Asian carp, the common carp has a long dorsal fin and two barbels (slender, whisker-like sensory organ at the mouth). Fisheries and Oceans Canada continues to monitor for the presence of Asian carp. “We’ve had lots of calls from the public. People are keen to help,” spokesperson Becky Cudmore said. There is a reason why these species are deemed invasive. They’re highly adaptable and can tolerate a variety of habitat conditions.

Parks and forestry staff are currently battling the dog-strangling vine. Although it is not new to Toronto – it arrived from Eastern Ukraine and Southern Russia in the 1900s – the herbaceous vine invades meadows and forest edges.

They could damage sport and commercial fishing in Ontario, which brings in millions of dollars.

– Sarah Chadwick, on Asian carp

“It prefers open spaces,” said Cara Webster, acting supervisor of tree nursery and natural resource management within Parks, Forestry and Recreation. “It grows in vine form, twining small trees and shrubs. It chokes them out. If we don’t keep up on control, it will overtake newly planted species.” It grows in large patches, outcompeting other species, Webster said, adding it poses a threat to native species like the black oak savannah in High Park. It can impact recreation areas because once it establishes a huge colony, “you can’t walk through it,” Webster said. Grassland birds, such as the Bobolink meadowlark, are particularly at risk. That’s because the vine alters their habitat preventing them from nesting. Toronto first began controlling the vine in the late 1990s when staff and volunteers

would manually remove it. The challenge is that the dog-strangling vine has a very deep root system. “Now, we use a method of applying a herbicide by wiping it on with a sponge. That way, it doesn’t hurt other species,” Webster said. “It’s very widespread in Toronto. It’s in every watershed and transportation corridor.” Agriculture Canada has introduced a biological control moth, a natural predator, which eats the leaves on the vine, as a method of control because the dog-strangling vine began impacting agriculture. The vine is not the only menace Toronto is fighting. The Japanese knotweed, a five- to six-feet tall bamboo-like plant that out competes other vegetation, can be found along streams and at the bottom of ravines. It spreads by its roots travelling down streams, Webster said. It blocks access to water, reducing all other native vegetation. Green frogs, native to Ontario, are being displaced because they are losing their habitat. “Every ravine in Toronto has a little bit of it,” she said. Control methods include cutting it down twice a season and using herbicide on the root system. “When people don’t stay on trail systems, they’re spreading species,” Webster said. PHOTO SPOTLIGHT: This photo was taken in Northern Etobicoke in 1955, looking northwest across the intersection of Islington Avenue with Fordwich Crescent. This photo seems to perfectly exemplify the massive transition in land use from farm

to suburb that was taking place in much of Etobicoke after the Second World War. You can see empty fields and a boarded up farm house in the distance. Monarch Construction paid Percy and Andrew Barker $1.8 million for 185 hectares of their land north of Fordwich Crescent. A sign on the right says ‘This Way to Model Homes.’ By

1956, Thistletown Collegiate had been erected on this empty field and the Kipling Heights subdivision had been built all the way west to Kipling Avenue.

The kitchen of the future is filled with appliances and products that are geared to accommodate a fast-paced lifestyle and improve efficiencies in day-to-day life. Trend Hunter’s Armida Ascano points to GE Appliances’ new GE

Less is more. The minimalist design trend that started in the mobile phone category is coming to life in every corner of the home, including kitchen appliances. “The most modern kitchen appliances look a lot like today’s smartphones,” says Lyndon Madden, marketing director at GE Appliances Canada. “Squared edges, lots of glass and touch screen controls are key design elements we’re bringing to the market in response to consumer demand.”

Why choose a Realtor? A local Realtor knows the ares inside and out Moving is stressful. In addition to the budgeting, selling and packing, you need to find the perfect spot for you and your family. You’re uprooting your life to start fresh in what might just be an entirely new neighbourhood. Fortunately, you don’t have to do it alone. Once you’ve decided on an area or city, pick a local Realtor. Any Realtor can help with the important basics — pricing and value, area demographics, paperwork. However, an agent who works in the desired area regularly and possibly even lives there can be an even greater asset.

Featured attractions Ask any real estate agent and he or she can tell you which malls and schools are in the area. It’s information you might even be able to figure out with a quick online search. Ask a local Realtor, however, and you’re sure to hear about the best burrito joint down the street or the fastest route to get downtown. You may have found your best resource and first friend to make things easier during the big change. If your Realtor lives in the area, he or she can answer any questions you may have not only as a professional, but as a neighbour. Trusting the neighbourhood enough to raise their family there is a positive sign. With all of the experience and knowledge of the real estate world, your Realtor

the perFect neighbours As a professional and community member, your Realtor will be networking 24/7. He or she knows who lives where and which neighbours would best match your lifestyle. Want neighbours with children who can grow up alongside your own? No problem. Want a quiet street with adults? Your Realtor knows the perfect spot.

a team oF proFessionals While networking and working with other new homeowners, your Realtor has created connections with local professionals. If you find the perfect house, but want to put in new flooring, add an extension or paint the baby’s room, your Realtor is sure to know the right person for the job. He or she will have insurance and mortgage brokers, contractors and maybe even a great babysitter on the radar.

always around Being local means your Realtor is almost always in the area. If you have a question or need to see some paperwork a second or third time around, your agent can most likely find time to meet. Even with a busy schedule, stopping in is only a short drive away, making things a lot easier.

The TTC is looking into allegations made on social media of a sexual harassment incident on a subway train. Jamie Leigh Baker’s accounting of the incident has been shared over 4,500 times since it was posted on Facebook on July 22. She claims, while taking a Bloor-Danforth train west to Islington, a man harassed her and another woman, at one point placing his hand in her lap. When she objected, two separate men leapt to the alleged harasser’s defence, claiming she was “making up stories.” Baker writes the men continued to berate her, until she activated the emergency alarm to summon authorities. Spokesperson Brad Ross said the TTC is investigating the incident, and he has personally reached out to Baker. hurt In COLLISIOn WIth pOLICe Car wman

New child care benefits will help combat poverty: Duncan Kowshalyah Anuragaven was excited last Wednesday to see more money in her bank account for her three children under the federal government’s new, larger child benefit payment. Anuragaven and her husband, Anuragaven Poopalasingham will now receive $1,500 a month for their children Avinaash, eight, 8, Acksharan, 6, and Abinaraan, 2. The first-generation Canadian family just bought their first home. “I’m so happy because we just bought a home,” she said. “There’s the mortgage, bills, putting money away for the future. I’m a Canadian, although I’m not born here. We’re starting our life. We’ll spend this extra money on our children for swimming and skating lessons. I want to raise good human beings.” The couple also sends money to Sri Lanka to their aging parents. The new single child benefit payment combines the Canada Child Tax Benefit and the Universal Child Care Benefit. The new payment is tax free. The Canada Child Benefit will pull about 300,000 children out of poverty, officials

say. Nine out of 10 families will receive more than under previous benefits, the government added. “We want to see the best start for all our children in Canada,” Minister of Science Kirsty Duncan, Etobicoke North MPP, said at a news conference last week at North Kipling Community Centre. “The federal government’s financial support will mean more money in the pockets of our families and our community. It will help the middle class, and those working hard to join it, with the cost of raising children.” Families may use the benefit as they see fit. “Today is a good day. It’s a good day for Etobicoke North. It’s a good day for our families,” Duncan said to applause from families, many of whom she knows. The minister called the benefit “more generous and better targeted” than previous federal child benefits. Benefiting Canadian families will see an average increase in child benefits of $2,300 in the 2016 to 2017 benefit year, the government stated. Under the new tax-free benefit, families with children under age six will receive

up to $6,400 per child annually and those with children between the ages of six and 17 will receive up to $5,400. The maximum benefit goes to families with net incomes below $30,000 while payments to those with incomes above $200,000 will be eliminated. Ontario has a child poverty rate of 14.2 per cent, the country’s highest. Federal calculations indicate Ontario will see its child poverty rate drop to 8.8 per cent once the benefit is introduced. Monanasundari Mardamutu, a north Etobicoke mother of two children younger than six, said the new child benefit will help ease finances for her single-income family. Balagopal Gopapillai, her husband, works in a jewelry business. “It’s just my husband working so the increase in benefits will help a lot for my kids,” the new Canadian said of her children, Eeshan, 3, and older sister, Eshitaa, 5. “I want to send my daughter to music lessons, recreational, extracurricular activities. “The balance we’ll put toward their education as extra savings into their RESPs.”
