Improved transit attracts young professionals: minister RAHUL GUPTA rgupta@insidetoronto.com

Etobicoke community health centres are reporting chronic wait lists for uninsured clients seeking treatment in its chiropody clinics. Each clinic operates with one to three chiropodists and simply cannot keep up with the demand, health centres’ staff report. In south Etobicoke, LAMP Community Health Centre generally has a 40-50 client wait list, at times as high as 120, reported chiropodist Susan McGuire, the chiropody team leader at LAMP’s chiropody clinic for the past 25 years. “Is there an awareness in gov-

ernment that there is a need?” McGuire asked. “Is increased funding something they are considering? “All these (chiropodist) positions were funded before the LHIN (Local Health Integration Network) system was put into place. Within months, I realized the need was getting out of hand.” McGuire estimated LAMP’s chiropody clinic could fill an additional chiropodist’s practice within six months just by clearing its wait list. Chiropodists assess, treat and prevent diseases and disorders of the foot by therapeutic, surgical or orthotic means, including care for corns and calluses, wound care, biomechanics or >>>LACK, page 30

July storm costs city $60M The sudden and severe storm on July 8 will cost the city more than $60 million, a report from city manager Joe Pennachetti says. The city will only be able to recover about $5 million through insurance, he said. The city also has a $30 million special fund to offset the cost of weather-related problems. The storm flooded the subway system and caused

damage to roads, parks and ravines. Pennachetti is calling for help from the provincial and federal governments to help improve the city’s storm water infrastructure. Last month, the Insurance Bureau of Canada called the storm Ontario’s most expensive natural disaster ever. The storm caused more than $850 million damage,

it said. “While these preliminary estimates are staggering, we do expect them to go even higher. The good news is that our industry was well prepared to handle our obligations to customers,” vicepresident Ralph Palumbo said in a statement in August.

Commerical goes residential on Renforth A plan to redevelop a struggling commercial plaza on Renforth Drive into a new residential subdivision was given the green light by westend councillors at Etobicoke York Community Council recently. The application proposes the demolition of the underutilized strip plaza at 735 and 743 Renforth Dr. to make way for the construction of 38 single detached dwellings

on a new public road. The only glitch: the parking lot at the plaza, which backs onto Eringate Park, is often used as overflow parking for park patrons. Larry Glen of Etobicoke Girls Softball League, said he and other league officials are concerned that redevelopment of the plaza will exacerbate the lack of parking in the area. There is no parking available at Eringate Park.

Emerging artist strikes a chord at Walk of Fame ESA grad to entertain stars as they walk red carpet CYNTHIA REASON creason@insidetoronto.com Etobicoke School of the Arts grad Jake Feeney is set to entertain the country’s biggest stars on the red carpet at Saturday’s Canada’s Walk of Fame award show. As one of seven winners of this year’s inaugural RBC Emerging Artist Mentorship Prize, the 18-year-old singer/ songwriter will not only get the chance to perform one of his original songs for this year’s inductees – including music producer Bob Ezrin, actors Victor Garber and Alan Thicke, Free the Children founders Craig and Marc Kielburger, and soccer player Christine Sinclair – as they make their way down the red carpet at the Elgin Theatre on

Sept. 21, but he’ll also walk away with $1,000 in prize money. “It’s kind of bewildering to think about right now, but I’m definitely looking forward to the chance to look out from the stage and see a bunch of strangers, and getting that exposure without having to promote myself,” said Feeney, noting that he also plans to make good use of his $1,000 prize. “I’m not gonna lie, the money is nice, too. I’d like to say I’ll save it, but I’m probably going to buy a new acoustic guitar.” To win his spot as a finalist for the RBC Emerging Artist Mentorship Prize – a new initiative aimed to encourage a new generation of talented Canadian singers – Feeney submitted a 90-second video

of himself playing guitar and singing along to a reworked version of The White Stripes’ Seven Nation Army. His submission was just one of hundreds of entries received by Canada’s Walk of Fame from “highly gifted music students enrolled in accredited music programs and schools across the country – from Salmon Arm, B.C. to St. John’s, Newfoundland to Whitehorse, Yukon”.

Feeney, who counts John Mayer and “hippie band” Edward Sharpe and the Magentic Zeros among his chief influences, said music has been his life for as long as he can remember. “I spend all of my time playing guitar and singing,” he said, noting that his father is a country music producer. “I even took the drama program at Etobicoke School of the Arts (ESA) as a way to settle into a

stage presence. I wasn’t really all that interested in theatre, but more the elements of theatre in helping towards my musical career.” ESA Principal Rob MacKinnon, at whose insistence Feeney applied for the RBC Emerging Artist Mentorship Prize, said he couldn’t be more proud of his former student. “He’s just a really good, talented guy who has an incredible future ahead of him, I think,” he said. “We have an event at ESA called Miscellaneous, where students just get up and showcase their talents and Jake was a regular performer. Every time he got up to perform, all the students in the audience would have their iPhones up recording him. I think everyone could just sense that he really was one of those performers who had a future and who was destined for great things.” While Feeney graduated from ESA in June, he said he’s

taking this year off to explore his musical options – and save up the funds he’ll need to attend Berklee College of Music in Boston down the road. In the meantime, he used his dad’s equipment at home to record his first eight-song EP of original tunes. Entitled ‘Imbued’, the EP is available online at jakefeeney.bandcamp.com Feeney also has his own YouTube channel, Jake Feeney Music, where he posts videos of both his original songs – including Forget Me Not, the song he’ll perform on stage at Canada’s Walk of Fame – and various covers from the likes of Mayer and Bob Dylan. When asked where he’d like to be in five years, Feeney set his sights on the stars. “I’m very, very optimistic so I want to be touring my first album, for sure,” he said.

Young girls take a twirl at baton TAMARA SHEPHARD tshephard@insidetoronto.com Leigh-Anne enjoyed seven years of competition and camaraderie as a child with Etobicoke Spectrum Baton Club. Decades later, her jazzdancing daughter, Shaye, 7, took an interest in the littleknown sport after watching old videos of her mom’s childhood performances and wearing her medals. So Leigh-Anne Googled the club curious if it still existed. It does. In fact, the club is celebrating its 45th anniversary. “Etobicoke Spectrum Baton Club is our community’s bestkept secret,” Leigh-Anne said. “People don’t know a lot about it. You say, ‘baton twirling’ and it conjures up images of majorettes, cheer leading and football games. But today, it’s more influenced by ballet and jazz. You watch someone twirling and think it’s easy. But there’s a certain level of skill to it and a lot of co-ordination to be able to twirl and do gymnastics and dance tricks.” Spectrum offers an all-in-

one program of baton, dance and gymnastics to children ages four and older in onehour weekly sessions from September through June. There are also pre-competitive and competitive programs. Members practice weekly in the gym, but also perform annually at the Lakeshore Santa Claus Parade, the club’s annual Christmas show, year-end recital, as well as at special events like this year’s 100th Grey Cup Pep Rally and last weekend’s Taste of the Kingsway. Leigh-Anne’s daughter quickly excelled in the sport. In her first year of competition, Shaye won a bronze medal for her individual routine at the provincial championships in May, and shared a gold medal win at the same competition in a group routine with teammates Harmony Campbell, Maddy Crozzoli and Lauren Shields. “Shaye really took to it,” Leigh-Anne said of her daughter’s leap into competitive twirling. “She learns very quickly. In her first year, she advanced a whole skill level, which is incredible.” Members learn three dis-

ciplines, gain hand-eye coordination, musicality and flexibility, as well as self-confidence and extracurricular performance opportunities, Leigh-Anne said of the program. This past year, Shaye and her teammate Lauren, 13, were nominated for best sportsmanship in Ontario in their first year of Spectrum’s competitive program. The Ontario Baton Twirling Association considered more than a dozen nominations, many of them much-older boys and girls ages 16, 17 and 18. Shaye cites competing, developing friendships, managing nerves and sportsmanship among her favourite aspects of the sport. She met her best friend,

Maddy, at Spectrum. Their opportunities to perform inspired four other girls in their grade to join Spectrum’s recreational program. Sheryl Baraniuk has been with Spectrum for 32 years. She joined at the age of five and went on to assistant coach in her teens. Today, she is club’s director and one of its three volunteer coaches. “I competed individually. But it was the higher level team routines I loved the most,” she recalled. “The intricacy of everyone moving together, catching each others’ batons, the choreography, the coaching.” “The most similar other sport people would be aware of is rhythmic gymnastics..,” she said. “You see the girls doing all that dancing and gymnastics, the back flips and cartwheels. Baton is also body work involved with apparatus. People see baton twirling on the Internet and say, ‘Oh my gosh. I had no idea this was baton twirling.’” Registration is open for Spectrum’s fall season on Monday, Sept. 23 from 6 to 7 p.m. at Second Street Junior Middle School. Email info@spectrumbaton.com

Take care of our waterways I

t’s time to roll up our sleeves, don our rubber boots and take care of our waterways. The Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup is launching this Saturday with volunteers set to collect litter across the city – and country – anywhere water meets land. People are always needed to pitch in, as the unfortunate fact is, there’s always garbage to clean up. Last week’s third annual Humber River Clean Up event, organized by Toronto-based 1-800-RID-OF-IT rubbish removal company, saw two tonnes of garbage hauled from the river. Volunteers found countless water bottles, unidentified metal grates, TVs, car seats, and port-a-potty doors among the refuse. Company founder Rick Crawford said after the event concluded there was still so much debris under the surface, his volunteers could have continued hauling our view junk out of the Humber for five more hours. And that was just one waterway Shoreline – imagine all the garbage littering cleanup starts the rest of our creeks, rivers and the shoreline along Lake Ontario. this week All this garbage does more than just pose a blight on our environmental landscape. It can affect our water quality and threaten not just human safety and health but that of local wildlife as well. During last year’s shoreline cleanup event, volunteers found 45 entangled animals, including 22 fish, 10 birds (including gulls, swans and herons) and a fox. Organizers say they see the same junk every year. Some of the worst offenders are cigarettes and cigarette filters (some 417,000 items collected last year), food wrappers and containers (nearly 99,000 items collected) and plastic bags (nearly 70,000 items collected). Fortunately, the Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup offers plenty of opportunity for residents to take a crack at clearing that litter, with nine days of localized cleanups planned across the city. Pitch in if you can, and take pride in our city by helping to keep it clean. Make it a family outing and use the opportunity to teach the kids about protecting our environment. As litter accumulates all year ‘round, keep an eye out next time you’re at the waterfront or walking a trail along the river. Toss out any you may find or alert the city by calling 311 if you suspect illegal dumping. For information visit www.shorelinecleanup.ca or call 1-877-427-2422.

Mayor Ford’s love of campaigning evident

M

ayor Rob Ford has made a name for himself as a great lover of football, sometimes to the point of distraction. But there is another game that excites nearly as much passion from our mayor and distracts him from his day-to-day duties almost as thoroughly. That would be campaigning. On Monday, Ford found the hustings so distracting he could barely pay attention to questions in a press scrum, held outside his office and just a few feet away from the spot where his staff had set up a television screen continuously looping a video of highlights of the summer of 2013. The mayor finally stopped, transfixed at the slow-motion video of himself, getting ready to arm-wrestle wrestlerturned-politician Hulk Hogan at the start of a local comic convention. When asked whether he was in fact campaigning now, with his video and another Ford Fest

david nickle the city in the offing later this week, the mayor was clear: “I’ve never stopped campaigning... If you do, you lose at the polls.” In the strictly practical sense of the word, the mayor was correct: an elected official is being judged from the moment he or she takes office. However, there are strict rules about spending and receiving donations for electoral campaigns outside the campaign period. And the video, produced by a local production/editing company and scored by one of the mayor’s vocally talented staff-members, sure looks like a bit of both. But Ford doesn’t care about these things, and by the evidence, the powers-that-be don’t either. Toronto’s Compliance Audit Committee let the mayor off the hook over a boatload of questions arising from the

way he and his brother conducted the 2010 mayoralty campaign when they were brought forward early in the term. The mayor survived that, just as he survived a conflict of interest ruling that threatened to remove him from office. And as things stand right now, campaigning hard and pushing the rules might be worth the risk. Because as much as the video playing in the office window struggles to maintain a happy narrative, the other narrative – the one surrounding the actual business of governing – is less cheerful. The mayor could well see his subway plans dashed, once again, as the realities of financing the Scarborough RT replacement with a subway come up at the October council meeting. The questions surrounding videos and allegations of drug use continue to swirl, and those other videos – of an over-refreshedseeming Ford at the Taste of the Danforth give a very different sense of the Summer

of Ford. Indeed, the scrum happened just as he left the city’s parks and environment committee – a committee he belongs to exofficio, but never routinely attends. This time, as a week ago, the mayor came with the express purpose of blocking an attempt to circumvent his budget process, by adding projects and programs back into the budget before he had even had the chance to set a framework. Ford had to block the matter there, because really, he would have no hope of stopping a budgetary coup at council, a body over which he has long ago lost control. Much better to concentrate on arm-wrestling photo ops, picnics in parks and fishing trips. They might not get him re-elected, but they certainly seem to be keeping our mayor entertained.

Local actress cast in short film, No Good Deed Crowd-funding underway to support project LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com A vet tech at Long Branch Animal Clinic in south Etobicoke who moonlights as an actress, has been cast in a short film that’s currently looking for crowd funding. Olivia Bremner owes her acting career to the critically acclaimed 1993 film, What’s Eating Gilbert Grape, about a 20-something small town Iowa man, who must care for his mentally challenged younger brother, starring Johnny Depp, Leonardo D i C a p r i o a n d Ju l i e t t e Lewis. “I saw What’s Eating Gilbert Grape when I was eight or nine,” recalled Bremner, a High Park resident, at a Bloor West Village coffee shop. “I

Olivia Bremner stars in the 15-minute short film entitled No Good Deed. A crowd-funding video about the film has been released at indiegogo.com

watched it and a light bulb went off – it was Leo’s role that impressed me.” shy, quiet kid Although a really shy, quiet, introverted kid, Bremner said she begged her parents to put her in acting classes, which

led to a role as Mother Mary in a play at Runnymede United Church at 10 years of age and a role as a dancer in Humberside Collegiate’s production of Guys and Dolls. “I was so nervous, but it brought me out of my shell. I even threw up before I went on stage, but the anxiety goes

down and the excitement goes up,” she said. “It’s like an actor’s kryptonite – that fear and desire for people to like you.” Bremner was recently cast as the lead role in a short film that is set to shoot in Toronto in the fall. No Good Deed is the story of a wealthy young couple, recently engaged, who is “on cloud nine,” only to suddenly fall to the deepest depths of despair due to a life-altering event. When writer-director Wayne Dorey, of DORVAL Films, first approached Bremner about the role, she said no, because of time constraints. Three weeks later, he sent her a teaser of the film and after watching it, Bremner thought ‘how could I turn this down?’ Dorey plans to shop the approximately 15-minute film around to festivals. “Our film relies solely on community support, and that support goes to bringing awareness to great Canadian

film and talent,” Bremner said. The ultimate goal is to see the film screened at the recently refurbished Humber Cinema at Bloor West and Jane streets. After graduating high school, Bremner continued her pursuit of an acting career as an extra on TV and movies. “You can’t edit theatre; film is what I really want to do,” Bremner said. She appeared on the Family Channel’s Radio Free Roscoe, shot in a warehouse in the Dupont Street and Lansdowne Avenue-area and was an extra in the film The Ice Princess, featuring Canadian Kim Cattrall. At 20, Bremner did a madefor-TV movie starring Daniel Baldwin called Anonymous Rex, filmed in downtown Toronto. When work as an extra dwindled, Bremner’s mom pushed her to find a career that would earn a steady

income. And so, because she loved animals, Bremner enrolled at Seneca College in its Registered Veterinary Technician program at the King campus. love for animals “I loved it – I got to work with horses. It came naturally which is weird because I have a fear of needles. Just like acting, when you’re doing something you love, you’ve got to get past the fear. You can’t allow fear to control your fate,” she said. Currently without an agent, she has to promote herself. No Good Deed is a film about choices, she says. “Good and bad, you can’t take them back. Sometimes things are permanent and you have to live with that for the rest of your life,” Bremner said.

Adapted tricycle gets boy, 6, moving CYNTHIA REASON creason@insidetoronto.com When little Francesco Pisani cruises around his Ravenscrest Drive neighbourhood on his new $4,000 adapted tricycle these days, he tends to draw a crowd. “It’s really heartwarming because every time we go outside on the bike, all the neighbours come out and watch and ask ‘is that the bike?’” laughed Francesco’s mom Angela. “I tell them, ‘anybody who wants to come over and take him for a spin is welcome.’ He loves it so much.” Back in May, the Pisanis’ neighbours banded together to host a Neighbours Helping Neighbours garage sale, barbecue and bake sale to help raise the funds necessary to buy six-year-old Fransesco – who suffers from cerebral palsy and autism – a modified tricycle to help keep him active. In total, the sale raised nearly $6,000 – enough money to not only purchase the bike, but also

to help fund Francesco’s costly, twice weekly physical therapy sessions. While Francesco, who attends Etobicoke’s Seneca School for children with developmental challenges, used to be confined to a wheelchair or a wagon for his daily walks with his mom, the modified tricycle now allows him more exercise. Pisani pushes her son’s bike along from behind, which sets the pedals in motion and keeps Francesco’s legs and knees moving, despite the fact that he’s not able to propel the trike forward himself. “Out of all the equipment he has, it’s the only one he goes on willingly. He loves it,” Pisani said, noting that the adjustable trike will fit Francesco for years to come. “If the weather is nice, we’re out with it every day.” Purchase of the trike would not have been possible, Pisani added, were it not for the generosity of friends, family, neighbours – and even people they’d never met before. “Even strangers coming forward and donating

Police still seek suspects in botched smash-and-grab CYNTHIA REASON creason@insidetoronto.com Damage is estimated to be in high after a stolen pickup truck crashed through the front of a Sherway Gardens store early Tuesday morning in what police are calling a botched smash-and-grab. Police received multiple calls from after-hours mall workers Tuesday at around 12:05 a.m., reporting that a pickup truck had driven through the Sporting Life, said Const. Victor Kwong.

“It turns out, a stolen pickup truck crashed into Sporting Life in what appears to be an intentional act,” he said, noting that in addition to the suspects in the truck, there were also accomplices in a car doing watch out. “The suspects went into the store, stole a quantity of merchandise and put it in the truck, but the truck could not drive away, believed to be because of the extensive damage.” The suspects then fled the scene in the accomplice’s

car – leaving all the stolen merchandise behind ($23,500 worth) in the disabled truck in their haste. Kwong said damage to the storefront, however, is estimated to be in the hundreds of thousands of dollars. Police are now looking for multiple suspects in connection with the case. No suspect descriptions are yet available. Police are reviewing security footage.

After a nearly four-week investigation, the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has ruled not to lay any charges against a Toronto police officer in relation to a motorcycle crash in Etobicoke last month. According the SIU investigation’s findings, the subject officer was riding his marked police motorcycle northbound on Kipling Avenue shortly after noon on Wednesday, Aug. 21, when a Suzuki motorcycle operated by a 24-year-old man drove by him and came to a stop at red traffic lights at the corner of Kipling and Horner Avenue. The subject officer stopped beside the Suzuki and noted that the licence plate on the motorcycle was bent up under the rear fender, obscuring the plate. When he asked the Suzuki rider why the plate was bent, the motorcyclist

did not respond, but proceeded to accelerate rapidly between the two northbound lanes of traffic stopped at the light, continuing north on Kipling Avenue. The subject officer did not pursue the motorcyclist, but continued northbound on Kipling Avenue after the lights changed to green. At Evans Avenue, the officer came across the motorcyclist lying on the roadway in obvious distress. The subject officer radioed for assistance and requested an ambulance. The man was transported to St. Michael’s Hospital where he was diagnosed with several serious injuries – including chest injuries, a collapsed lung and a fractured left arm. SIU Director Ian Scott said the subject officer did nothing wrong under the circumstances. “The rider of the Suzuki chose to flee from the officer and drive in a dangerous manner, leading to his losing control of the motorcycle and his serious injuries upon impact with the roadway,” he said in a statement. “In my view, the complainant was the author of his

own misfortune, and the subject officer cannot be held criminally liable for the complainant’s actions in these circumstances.” The SIU assigned five investigators, three forensic investigators and a collision reconstructionist to probe the circumstances of the incident. As part of the investigation, 12 civilian witnesses were interviewed and the subject officer consented to an interview with the SIU and supplied a copy of his duty notes. According to the collision reconstructionist’s report, the right side of the front tire of the complainant’s motorcycle came into contact with the east concrete curb of Kipling Avenue, slightly before the intersection of Kipling and Evans Avenues. There is no suggestion of contact between the subject officer’s motorcycle and the one driven by the complainant. The SIU investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault.

Lacrosse coach charged with sex assault of player Police believe there are more victims An Etobicoke lacrosse coach is facing three charges in connection with an historic sexual assault investigation. It is alleged that between 1977 and 1980, a now 44-year-old man was sexually assaulted by his lacrosse coach on several occasions. Police arrested 49-year-old Robert Hastings, of Mississauga on Tuesday, Sept. 10. He is charged with three counts of indecent assault on a male and is scheduled to appear in court on Oct. 28. Police believe there may be other victims, as Hastings has worked as a lacrosse coach in Etobicoke and Mississauga since the late 1970s. Anyone with information is asked to contact police at 416-808-2200, Crime Stoppers anonymously at 416-222-TIPS (8477) or online at www.222tips.com.

Police arrest Catch 22 suspect Police arrested Catch 22 suspect Robert John Hawthorne last week – bringing to 23 the number of most wanted suspects apprehended since the program launched in February. Hawthorne, 42, was profiled in The Guardian back in June, when he was wanted by police in south Etobicoke’s 22 Division on a charge of failure to comply with recognizance. On Friday, Sept. 13, members of 22 Division located and arrested Hawthorne. He appeared in court for a bail hearing later that same day. In a release announcing Hawthorne’s arrest, 22 Division officers thanked “all those who have seen our Catch 22 news releases in the Etobicoke Guardian and on social media.”

Zero Gun Violence Movement to take part in Manifesto fest MIKE ADLER madler@insidetoronto.com For members of the Zero Gun Violence Movement, a summer spent bringing their message to schools and community events across Toronto has been an eye-opener. “We’re closer – but we’re far, also,” Louis March of the African Canadian Heritage Association (ACHA) said. Volunteers from ACHA and other groups were part of a 90-day campaign visiting city neighbourhoods – places such as Jane-Finch, Lawrence Heights, Alexandra Park, Malvern, Kingston-Galloway and Parma Court – to talk about violence. The first half of the summer looked a little more peaceful than in past years, said March, noting the homicide rate in Toronto was down by double digits compared to 2012. Then came a string of deadly shootings around Jane and Finch.

Gardener recognized for volunteer work at school For more than 17 years, Etobian Stanley Roszak has tended to the plants at Bishop Marrocco/Thomas Merton Catholic Secondary School. He has logged more than 10,000 volunteer hours gar-

dening at the school on the corner of Bloor and Dundas streets west. For his efforts, Parkdale-High Park MP and MPP Peggy Nash and Cheri DiNovo have extended “heartfelt thanks” through framed

certificates of recognition. “By sharing his horticultural expertise, Mr. Roszak has enriched the lives of so many at the school,” Nash said. “His commitment is an example for us all of the

Roszak is a third generation horticulturist. The native of Poland got his green thumb from his grandfather. Roszak has shared his passion for plants with countless Bishop Marrocco students, one of whom was his son, who was the one who initially volunteered his father to help out. “His science teacher said, ‘the plants are dying.’ So, my son offered my help,” Roszak recalled. Plants, he says, never give one the cold shoulder. “Plants are all very friendly,” he said. “Dedication and pride – that’s why I do it.” –Lisa Rainford If you know someone whose volunteer work is worth noting, tell us via etg@ insidetoronto.com

Entrepreneurs rely on transit to get around, few have cars >>>from page 1 mobility for this younger generation of entrepreneurs, most of whom don’t have a car.” Murray also defended his government’s decision to proceed with a two-stop eastern extension of the BloorDanforth subway line, saying terminating the extension at Scarborough Town Centre,

and not McCowan Road and Sheppard Avenue East, would revitalize Scarborough’s employment potential. “The Scarborough Town Centre is the logical terminus because it is an underdeveloped downtown core,” he said. “Low-valued industrial land that is under-utilized is the ideal corridor to put rapid transit in if you want

to reinvent the neighbourhood.” Murray, who in the past couple of months has made repeated public critiques against both the federal government and Mayor Rob Ford, also called for an end to the political in-fighting over transit funding. Under Premier Kathleen Wynne, the province is

expected to soon introduce plans to generate transit revenue to fund the regional Big Move network being built by Metrolinx. Murray said the Toronto region must find the money

for the $50 billion transportation plan just to keep up with expansion plans of comparable cities like New York and London, UK, which is investing around 16 billion pounds into a new commuter

rail service to open in 2018. Do you agree improved transit will attract a younger workforce? Let us know by email: etg@insidetoronto.com

Before You Spend Thousands on a New Roof… The Integrity Roof System

What Risks Do You Face? According to the Better Business Bureau, which tracks the ‘reputable’ roofing companies, roofing is at or near the top of the list for customer enquiries and complaints for the last five years in a row. Homeowners with limited experience in roof replacement rely on the roofing contractor to recommend the proper specifications. This process becomes confusing because there is no regulation in the industry, and each contractor recommends a different job. What you should know about roof surface or roof deck preparation: The roof deck is the structural surface over which your roofing materials are applied. All roof boards and/or plywood must be fastened securely to the rafters, and damaged or rotten wood must be replaced. Your attic should be inspected before the work starts to uncover potential problems. A bad roof surface allows the nails to push up through the shingles, causing leaks.

What you should know about underlayment: A complete underlay system should be applied before your shingles are installed. There are two types of roofing underlay, waterproof and water resistant. Waterproof underlay is needed in areas most vulnerable to leaks: the eaves edge of the roof; in valleys, at dormer sides, around chimneys and around skylights. Water resistant underlay, often called “tar paper”, is needed on the remaining roof area. Water resistant underlay protects the roof surface in a storm situation where a few shingles blow off, but cannot be replaced immediately.

HAVE YOU LOOKED AT ALL SIDES OF YOUR ROOF RECENTLY?

What you should know about ventilation: Improper attic venting is a common cause of early shingle failure, and your product warranty requires that your attic have proper ventilation. Venting consists of intake and exhaust. To facilitate proper air flow, your attic needs intake vents located in the overhang and exhaust vents at the roof peak. A balanced venting system is required; otherwise air will be pulled from your house. An inspection of your attic is essential to present appropriate and complete venting solutions. What you should know about shingle quality: All shingles are not the same. Estimators should include at least three grades of shingles and inform you of the real expected shingle life. In addition to their aesthetic appeal, better quality shingles often provide you with the best value when measured on a cost per year basis. Peter & Greg Walker Contracting has been serving the roofing needs of Toronto homeowners since 1981. They are members of the Certified Contractors Network, have manufacturer certified installers, are fully insured and have been voted Etobicoke’s “Top Roofing Company” 12 times (including 2013).

health

Lack of funding can cause seniors to fall through the cracks >>>from page 1 gait problems, as well as physical therapy. This article is the second in a series The Guardian is reporting on existing challenges to the provision of adequate foot care for seniors in south Etobicoke. Last week, an article reported Storefront Humber had reinstated its popular and much-needed seniors’ toenail cutting service after hiring a new nurse. The Ontario government created 14 LHINs in 2006, not-for-profit corporations that work with local health providers and communities to determine health service priorities to plan, integrate and fund local health services, including hospitals, long-term care facilities and community health centres. The Guardian contacted the Central Toronto LHIN for comment. A LHIN spokesperson referred The Guardian’s questions to the College of Chiropodists of Ontario. A college spokesperson, who asked not to be named, said as the province’s regulatory body for chiropodists it

does not lobby the provincial government for increased funding for community health centres’ chiropody clinics. inundated with calls

However, she confirmed the college has been inundated with calls from south Etobicoke residents frustrated by the chiropody clinics’ wait lists. To receive treatment at a community health centre, clients must not be insured and also not be able to afford private service elsewhere. “Funding is absolutely a problem,” the college spokesperson said. “There aren’t enough funds. My heart breaks because I have to say to people, ‘I’m so sorry. I can’t help you.’ As a regulatory college, there is nothing we can do. The Ontario Society of Chiropody Association could maybe write letters to MPPs about this issue.” An official with the Ontario Society of Chiropody Association said Wednesday its board of directors would consider The Guardian’s

request for an interview. A chiropodist for 30 years, McGuire has spent most of her career working at LAMP and heading its chiropody clinic. Proper foot care is integral to good health and quality of life, McGuire said. McGuire offers a years-old example from when LAMP’s chiropody clinic cut seniors’ toenails, a service it no longer offers due to increased demand from clients with more medical-related foot issues. “One woman had given up every part of her social life,” she recalled. “She wasn’t going out. She was having food delivered. She was ordering shoes from a catalogue. Something as simple as her toenails made her a recluse, which is crazy. I saw her just the once and suddenly she could regain her life.” At LAMP’s chiropody clinic, approximately 60 per cent of clients are seniors, many 90 years old or older, 30 per cent are people with diabetes, the remainder are adults and children, McGuire estimated. People with diabetes face

serious, even potentially fatal consequences if their feet get wounded and infected. foot care ‘important’ “Not only is it the loss of a foot unfortunately for someone with diabetes. It can become a cascade of system failure,” McGuire said. “The other foot is at risk. You become at risk in general. Statistics show after an amputation, you lose the other foot or leg and within a number of years, there is a loss of life. Foot care is very important.” The LAMP chiropody clinic’s chronic wait list makes it virtually impossible to take new clients unless the person is an existing LAMP client in

urgent need of care, a situation which rarely occurs. “I don’t remember a time in my 25 years here when there hasn’t been a wait list. There are always people waiting,” McGuire said. “The clients we have, at least two-thirds of them require ongoing care. It’s always a balancing act. “It’s so difficult to know there are people we can help, but there is no time. There are people who live in the neighbourhood who can’t come to us. It’s very difficult as a practitioner to know you can help, but you just can’t.” Lorraine Telford, LAMP’s manager of clinical programs, reported its chiropody clinic has approximately 600 ongoing clients, the majority requiring ongoing care. “On our roster we have either clients who are acute or have chronic, but serious issues. Once someone is a client, we can’t say, ‘you’ve had four sessions. We need to serve other people.’ These clients have a clinical need and it’s unethical.” Telford reported LAMP is “making the case to the min-

istry for more resources” with its chiropody program making a report to LAMP’s board of directors. It is encouraging, she said, that LAMP has received a slight increase in government funding to allow more diabetic clients to attend its chiropody clinic. Te l f o rd a g re e d w i t h McGuire and the College of Chiropodists of Ontario that the answer to clearing community health centres’ chiropody clinics’ chronic wait lists is increased Ontario government funding to hire more chiropodists. “The opportunity for advocacy here is good,” Telford said. “Can we build care with more and better services around seniors’ health, including the need for good foot care?”

When activated, Forward Collision Alert warns drivers if they are approaching a vehicle too quickly. Lane Departure Warning gives an alert when the vehicle veers from a marked roadway lane. camera, enabled by the Chevrolet MyLink’s seven-inch digital touchscreen, helps give drivers a clearer view of stationary objects behind the vehicle.    In MyLink-equipped Sonics, owners can press a button mounted on the steering wheel to initiate a voice command when a smartphone is paired. In Siri Eyes Free mode, the button allows sessions with Siri to be-

When comes to buying a Chassis Cab truck, buyers are very particular about their needs and expectations, the two most important concerns being maximum capability and lowest operation cost. Ram feels it has met this challenge for 2014 with the bonus of leading edge connectivity, multiple upfit solutions and a powertrain warranty of its diesel models of five years/160,000 kilometres. At the heart of the Ram Chassis Cabs for 2014 are the engines. The 3500, 4500 and 5500 are fitted as standard with the new 6.4-litre Hemi V8 with 410 hp and 429 lb/ft of torque and a choice of two, six-speed automatics. This engine is used for the first time in the 4500 and 5500 models. While it shares similar Hemi architecture, it was engineered for the heavy-duty cycle. Also available on the 3500 model is a 5.7-litre Hemi V8 with 383 hp and 400 lb/ft of torque. With economy of operation in mind, the 5.7-litre features variable valve timing. The Cummins diesel has been a hallmark of Ram trucks from the get go and on the Chassis Cab for 2014 there is a choice of two 6.7-litre versions. The first produces 320 hp and 650 lb/ft of torque mated to a segment-exclusive six-speed manual transmission, which features a wear-compensating clutch for consistent performance and a dual-trunion shift tower to accommodate a compact shift pattern. A second version offers 325 hp and a claimed bestin-class torque of 750 lb/ft. The engine is offered with an Aisin six-speed automatic transmission (AS69RC). As a result, Ram claims best-in-class towing of 13,426 kg (29,600 lb) as well as a best-in-class Gross Vehicle Weight Rating of 17,010 kg (37,500 lb). Ram engineers designed a new front suspension with three links to handle greater load and towing situations. As a result, Gross Vehicle Weight Ratings (GVWR) for Ram 3500 models equipped with single rear wheels have been raised, now ranging from 4,763 kg (10,500 lb) to 5,443 kg (12,000 lb). Ram also features an available 4,536 kg (10,000 lb) GVWR version. Meanwhile, the Ram 4500 and 5500 Chassis Cabs

have also received upgrades as well and are now rated at 3175 kg (7,000 lb) of front Gross Axle Weight Rating (GA,WR) on 6.4-litre gas engine-equipped models and 3,288 kg (7,250 lb) GAWR on 6.7-litre Cummins Turbo Diesel models. Upfits for uses such as fire pumpers, dump beds, aerial buckets, cranes and onboard compressor/generators are important. To this end, the Ram frame is made from 50,000-psi high-strength steel with eight separate cross members. Optionally available is a new dual fuel tank that combines 197 litre and 83 litre tanks for 280 litres for long hauls. Also new is mid-ship 83-litre tank available as an option for gasoline-powered Chassis Cabs. This is 2013 and Chassis Cab operators need to keep in touch and Ram does this with Uconnect. It offers hands-free communications with Bluetooth so drivers can control their mobile phone, music and navigation system while staying focused on driving. The phone book within a compatible phone is automatically downloaded, synchronizing as many as 1,000 phone book entries, which can then be selected by simply saying a contact name. The feature also allows drivers to switch radio modes, tune to AM/FM and SiriusXM Radio stations. Uconnect also supports Bluetooth-equipped cell phones with message access profile (MAP) advanced text messaging. This voice recognition uses the embedded connectivity to access cloud-based voice-recognition and enable advanced text messaging, which converts the spoken word into verbatim text messages. To quote Ram, “Communication is limited only by the user’s vocabulary. Pricing starts with the 6.4-litre 3500/4500/5500 at $38,495/$41,490/$43,495 respectively and $36,495 for the 5.7-litre 3500. With the diesel pricing begins at $44,495/$47,890 for the 3500 manual/automatic and $47,495/$50,840 for the 4500 manual/automatic. – Jim Robinson Metroland Media

Concepts are king at Frankfurt Concept cars and trucks in all shapes, sizes and segments dominated this year’s Frankfurt Motor Show that runs until September 22. There are 11 buildings where the Frankfurt show is held, and most were brimming over with concepts. For example, take the Infiniti Q30 Concept that “signals the contemporary design vision for a compact Infiniti vehicle which will target a new generation of premium customers. Space limits writing about all the concepts at Frankfurt but here are some of the standouts.

fascia incorporating design elements that appear to float within the lower front aperture and above the spoiler. A standout feature is headlamps using organic LEDs – the latest lighting that offers greater flexibility in terms of positioning and design, fast response and colour range. Look for a production version sometime late next year.

JAGUAR C-X17 CONCEPT: Jaguar caught many off guard with its first ever sports crossover concept vehicle labelled as a design study to introduce Jaguar’s all-new advanced aluminum monocoque architecture, codenamed iQ[Al]. All next generation Jaguars will use the chassis, the first of which is due in 2015. The last Jaguar concept vehicle turned out to be the F-Type sportscar and, based on who finished it looked, the C-X17 will result in a production mid-size SUV that can take a variety of engines plus a lot of the all-wheel-drive technology borrowed from its sister company Land Rover.

AUDI SPORT QUATTRO: Combining quattro drive and a V8 engine with an Audi plug-in hybrid results in a 700 hp rocket that sits on 21-inch wheels with several design cues from racing quattros of the 1980s. These include the angular, flat C-pillars and the rectangular double headlights featuring Audi’s groundbreaking Matrix LED technology, which will be available by the end of this year in the new generation Audi A8. The LED high-beam unit of the Audi Matrix LED headlights is comprised of numerous individual diodes. The individual LEDs, which work in tandem with upstream lenses and reflectors, always deliver excellent illumination. They are activated, deactivated or dimmed individually according to the situation.

VOLVO CONCEPT COUPE: Developed in-house for Volvo Cars only, the Scalable Product Architecture frees Volvo’s designers and engineers from the limitations of previous crossbrand platforms. Viewed from the side, the Concept Coupe looks very powerful aided by the distance between the dashboard and the front axle that has been extended while the windows and roofline have been moved slightly rearwards. – Jim Robinson Metroland Media

FORD S-MAX CONCEPT: This SUV incorporates Ford’s global design language with a high mounted grille, swept-back headlamps and a unique treatment of the vehicle’s lower

$

Clockwise from top left: Volvo Concept Coupe: One of the prettiest cars, production or concept, came from Volvo in the Concept Coupe. Taking design cues from the P1800 of the 1960s, it drew a huge crowd; Jaguar X-C17: Based on new aluminum body architecture, the X-C17 from Jaguar is the brand’s first foray into the booming luxury sports crossover segment; Ford S-MAX Concept: This is another car that will probably develop into a production people mover. An innovation is the use of organic LED lighting; Audi Sport: Harking back the racing Audi’s, the Sport quattro is a plug-in hybrid with 700 hp on tap.
