HUMBER CLEAN UP: Kelly McDowell, from The Complete Paddler, hauls a recycling bin from Richard Vandentillaart's canoe during the 3rd annual Humber River clean up. Vandentillaart was heading out for his usual morning paddle and decided to help out, finding what he describes as the day's "the most ironic piece of trash." HundredA of pounds of garbage, including a television set, tires, and a car seat were pulled out of the river by volunteers organized by Rick Crawford of Get Rid of It junk removal.

With a $15.7-million renovation a year away from breaking ground, Albion library is hosting a series of community consultations this fall to get local feedback on what library patrons would like to see included in their new and improved branch. Anne Bailey, Toronto Public Library’s director of branch libraries, said the redesign process for Albion library will rely heavily on community feedback. “The library is for the whole community, and we have programs for people of all ages, from babies to seniors,” she said. “So, we really need to talk to all of those groups and get input from them about how they’re using the library and what they’d like to see there, because that really helps in figuring out how the space should >>>TEN, page 33

Seniors’ nail-cutting returns to Storefront Humber High demand for service requires more providers

TAMARA SHEPHARD tshephard@insidetoronto.com It’s something that may be taken for granted by younger adults, but for seniors, foot-care ser-

vices can be a critical need. Such was the case in South Etobicoke when Storefront Humber was forced to cancel its popular and low-cost nailcutting service after its nurse

resigned in recent months. Her sudden departure left some seniors in the community scrambling to find an alternative. The non-profit agency – founded 40 years ago to help

seniors and disabled people remain independent in their own homes – told The Guardian they’ve finally hired another nurse to resume the $8 service, >>>FUNDING, page 6

City of Toronto employees are aiming to raise more than a song for the United Way Toronto this year. City workers kicked off the 2013 $1.1 million campaign with a singing competition Tuesday morning in Nathan Phillips Square. Representatives between five municipal sector orga-

nizations – the city, Toronto Hydro, Toronto Community Housing, Toronto Police Service and the Toronto Tr a n s i t Co m m i s s i o n – squared off in the singing competition over the lunch hour. The winner was Donald Eta from Toronto Hydro. But the campaign is just getting

started. O v e r t h e n e x t t h re e months, the Toronto public service is hoping to raise $1.1 million for the United Way, which distributes funding to a range of social service agencies.

Thyroid cancer survivor to walk 10km for cancer research

TAMARA SHEPHARD tshephard@insidetoronto.com Bruce Hutchinson walked into his doctor’s office five years ago for a regular checkup. He walked out with a referral to a specialist. The specialist ordered a biopsy on the previously undetected lump in his throat. It was a cancerous nodule in his thyroid gland. “I was in shock. The first stage was relative denial about it. There’s a lot of mental conflict when you’re first diagnosed,” Hutchinson, an Etobicoke real estate agent, recalled. “The bad news is ‘you’ve got cancer.’ The good news is it’s the most treatable kind of cancer thanks to research and treatment advances.” A surgeon removed his thyroid due to a high chance the cancer could migrate to his lymph lodes and spread throughout his body. Oral doses of radiation given in hospital encased in lead vials followed. Hutchinson, 58, describes his recovery as a “long and winding road” made easier through the support of family, friends and others who join the fight against cancer. “I like to share my story to tell people afraid of a cancer diagnosis, you can get over this. Don’t stall. Don’t put it off. If you detect cancer early enough, you increase your chances of survival. Through research made possible through fundraising, great advances have been made. “My slogan is: ‘Check up or check out.’” This Sunday, Hutchinson, his wife Franca Dominelli and daughter Vanessa, 15, will join as many as 700 people of all ages invited to walk, run, ride or inline skate at The Terry Fox

Canadians watched in awe roadside and on television news broadcasts. Then on Sept. 1, 1980 just outside Thunder Bay, Fox was felled with excruciating chest pains. Doctors confirmed the cancer had spread to his lungs. Fox’s Marathon of Hope was over. Fox lost his battle with cancer on June 28, 1981. He was 22. Hutchinson met Fox’s brother, Darrell, through mutual friends at the Molson Indy a number of years ago before he got cancer. “I always held Terry Fox to be such a great hero, a champion to all of us who was trying to achieve his dream to help people and to overcome this dreadful disease,” Hutchinson recalled. “But I never really got it until that fateful day. The Marathon of Hope was Terry’s vision. Now we follow in his footsteps. I feel a great deal of thanks to Terry and his brother.” The Terry Fox Foundation is a leading national investor in cancer research. Today, Hutchinson returns to Princess Margaret Hospital every six months for a followup checkup with an oncologist. Last month, he and his family travelled to Disney World in Florida. “It was a joyous moment. It’s the dream of being healthy and cancer-free.”

Local businesses lead by example B

usinesses in Toronto – big and small – help make our city the economic force it is. They create jobs, they pay taxes and they provide services and create products we need.

We’d suggest there’s another goal local businesses should make a top priority: to give back to the community they serve. Business owners and their employees are part of our neighbourhoods just as much as anyone else – in fact, they hold a position of influence that should be used to set an example by spreading goodwill. In recent editions we’ve helped share the stories of some businesses already leading the way. Bloor West entrepreneur and 1-800-RID-OF-IT President Rick Crawford rolled up his sleeves this week to help clean garbage from the Humber River. He saw a need and made use of his expertise – providing the trucks, staff and equipment from his national rubbish removal comour view pany to clean one of our city’s waterways. Etobicoke-based ShredEX Paying it recently held a charity paper forward helps shredding event where compawere invited to pay a nomicommunities nies nal fee to shred papers and the proceeds all went to a local crisis centre. And in Scarborough, Rouge Valley Mitsubishi held a charity test drive event and raised more than $1,200 for the East Scarborough Boys and Girls Club. There are plenty of non-profits and local community groups in need of help. Encourage employees to participate in one of the many charity walks that take place throughout the year. Or form a company team and pitch in on a Habitat for Humanity build. Doing this can be a win for everyone – for the community, but also as a team-building exercise and a way to instill pride in the company and confidence in its mandate. Even adding a charity element to a new office opening or anniversary can make a difference. North York’s Royal LePage Partners celebrated its 100th birthday this year with a barbecue and fundraiser for the North York Women’s Shelter. It’s the completely selfless actions that inspire further good works. As the backbone of our communities, businesses should use that leverage to support the people around them. If your business is going above and beyond, let us help spread that good influence. Good journalism essential to democracy

G

iven the hearings, trials and appeals that Mayor Rob Ford has gone through over the past three years, it’s hard to imagine a lower-stakes game than the Ontario Press Council hearings that took place Monday. If the Globe and Mail and Toronto Star are found to have behaved unethically in pursuing stories about the mayor and his brother Doug, they’ll have to publish the scolding decisions in full. No one’s talking about throwing them out of their newspaper boxes. But wouldn’t you know it? Out of the second half of the hearing came one of the most cogent – and dispiriting – statements of the health of our body politic to come along in years. Specifically, it came from complainant Connie Harrison, who objected to the Globe and Mail’s story

david nickle the city alleging Doug Ford once ran a hashish distribution business in central Etobicoke. She, however, demands more than the Globe has been able to provide, being as none of the sources who spoke about the alleged Ford hashish business were willing to be identified. Assurances from editors and reporters that the sources had been vetted, and their fears of the consequences of revealing their names were real, didn’t wash with Harrison. The Globe should have betrayed its sources, submitted its reporter’s notes to a third party, or failing that, simply ask for its reporter’s resignation. Bottom line: whatever credibility the Globe had

managed to earn over the decades reporting and publishing the news of the day didn’t count to her. By reporting as much of the story that it thought it could without squaring the circle with unwillingly named sources, the Globe and Mail did only harm to the city. Now, we journalists have never enjoyed the love we feel we deserve from the public, and Harrison’s opinions and feelings are her own. But they are not only her own, in this divided city. The mayor and his brother take pains to paint their critics in the media as partisan liars, whose freedom-of-information requests are signs of impertinence rather than diligence. Is that narrative taking hold? Not overall, hopefully. The accountability provided by good journal-

ism is, as was stated by both Globe editor John Stackhouse and earlier in the day by Toronto Star editor-in-chief Michael Cooke, essential to the functioning of a healthy democracy. It’s also fragile. Reporters and editors cannot compel testimony or proceed with criminal charges if they believe they’re warranted. They can’t use wiretaps. They can’t enter premises. They cannot, always, deliver 100 per cent of an important story as fast as their readers might wish. With all its imperfections, however, good reporting sheds light on matters that the public should know about, and that’s a vital function – even if sometimes that light isn’t as bright or constant as some of us might wish.

Councillors gave the go-ahead to a proposed redevelopment of a vacant car dealership at 5500 Dundas St. W. on Tuesday. The proposal calls for the construction of two separate two-storey buildings fronting Dundas Street West, with ground floor retail and both retail and office uses on the second floor. In moving the approval of the application, EtobicokeLakeshore Councillor Peter Milczyn requested that transportation services staff review the parking regulations on adjacent streets, and poll effected residents for appropriate changes to parking regulations. The redevelopment proposes underground parking for 248 cars and surface parking for 64 at the rear of the proposed buildings.

Councillors approved a set of mid-block, pedestrian-activated traffic control signals on Martin Grove Road. The signals, which are proposed to be located 43 metres south of Rampart Road, will provide “safe and convenient access for pedestrians crossing Martin Grove Road”. In his monthly newsletter, Etobicoke North Councillor Vincent Crisanti said the request for the signals stemmed from a conversation he had with Father Henry Carr Catholic Secondary students about the dangers of crossing Martin Grove. He said if approved, the signals could be in by 2014. – Cynthia Reason

Funding not provided for seniors’ nail-cutting services >>>from page 1 but the time they went without one forced the issue into the spotlight. “There is no space for seniors anywhere in the community to get this service. We’re crying out for more space,” said Ruthmary James, a local senior who is diabetic. “People don’t know what to do. As you get older, you can get infections. If you can’t walk around because of your toenails, what are you supposed to do?” As people age, toenails tend to grow harder and thicker, making self-care difficult for many older adults, including those who are disabled. Without the Storefront Humber service, James found care at a clinic that serves diabetics, but the $20 cost soared to $36 because she needed work done on her calluses. Frustrated, James called area organizations Stonegate and LAMP Community Health Centres to inquire about their chiropody clinics. She learned both had wait lists.

However, the fact is community health centres’ chiropody clinics do not offer nail-cutting services. Chiropodists offer a different scope of practice, which includes working on corns and calluses, wound care, biomechanical or gait problems, as well as physical therapy. LAMP Community Health Centre has 600 ongoing clients in its busy chiropody clinic, another 50 on a waiting list. It offered nail cutting decades ago, but that ended years ago when the chiropody practice became so full of medical patients. “We only take new (chiropody) patients if they are internally referred and of an urgent circumstance, which is basically nobody,” Lorraine Telford, LAMP’s manager of clinical programs said. “The patients on our roster are either acute or chronic, but serious.” “We don’t just clip toenails. Although a lot of seniors want and need that service.” But local seniors can feel

heartened. Last Wednesday night, a new registered nurse trained in nail cutting started offering the service again at Storefront Humber on Lake Shore Boulevard West at Mimico

Avenue. The nurse works every first and third Wednesday night from 4:30 to 8 p.m. Transportation to and from the agency is available for $5. Call 416-259-4207 for more

information. “We look after seniors and disabled people and a lot of them have toenails that are difficult to cut and don’t have the money for a (private) chiropodist,” Mary Hansen, Storefront Humber’s executive director said. “People were complaining. It’s a needed service, especially for people on a low income.” Storefront Humber receives no Ontario government funding to offer the service, nor does it supplement the cost. Nail cutting is fee for service. Seniors pay the $8 fee directly to the nurse to cover her wage. The nurse will treat 15 or so patients a night, Hansen reported. However, the need is so great in the community, Hansen said she remains hopeful a second nurse could be hired for an additional two nights a month. But the broader question remains – how to get more nail-cutting services in the community for seniors who need it. The central Local Health

Integration Network, an agency of the Ontario government that funds Storefront Humber – but not its nail cutting service – and LAMP and Stonegate Community Health Centres, reported it is aware of the need. “Over the last few years, Toronto Central LHIN has increased the availability of chiropody services available through CHCs, however we do also recognize a gap exists for general toe nail care,” Toronto Central LHIN communications consultant Sharon Navarro said. Hansen said maintaining the level of nail-cutting service needed in the community is an ongoing challenge. “We’re trying to get more services on the Lakeshore, but it remains to be seen,” she said. For more info, call Storefront Humber at 416-259-4207. Are you a senior affected by the lack of affordable foot care options? A funny thing happens when you tell kids they matter. They believe you. An alarming 40,000 kids drop out of high school every year. Boys and Girls Clubs of Canada are committed to changing that. TUFF comes to subway stations this week JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com Commuters taking the subway will be able to enjoy short, independent films as they wait for their ride with the return of the Toronto Urban Film Festival (TUFF). Now in its seventh year, TUFF offers a selection of silent, one-minute shorts from around the world, with a different film screening every

10 minutes on each of the network’s 290 Pattison Onestop screens. The brainchild of founder and Executive Director Sharon Switzer of Art 4 Commuters, the festival features animated and live-action shorts. Switzer said the idea for TUFF came about after she spoke with the company that operates the screens in subway stations. “It was sort of a no-brainer,” she

said. “You have a city that loves film, you give people films in public spaces, who’s not going to love it?” This year’s TUFF festival features 82 films from 20 countries. Of those, 23 come from Toronto, with some coming from such destinations as far away as Kenya and Iran. The selections were chosen from some 390 submissions by guest judge and acclaimed filmmaker Bruce McDonald.

“It was an incredibly strong year for us,” Switzer said. “What we used to get in a (minute-long film), when you compare it to what we get now, the difference is amazing.” In addition to the selected films, TUFF will include some special series. This Friday, experimental filmmaker Christina Battle’s “we’re not exactly sure what happened” series will provide alternative imagery to go along with snippets from

CNN’s coverage of the Boston bombing from April. “She took the transcripts of the nonsense CNN was broadcasting while reporting on the Boston City bombings where they didn’t know what was going on but kept having to talk because it’s CNN,” Switzer said. TUFF runs Sept. 13 to 15.

Beaten boy is ‘improving’; his mother remains in police custody CYNTHIA REASON creason@insidetoronto.com The condition of an 11-year-old Etobicoke boy beaten within inches of his life late last month is said to be improving, as his mother remains in custody charged with his attempted murder. “ The boy’s condition is improving, but I can’t say more than that,” said Const. Wendy Drummond, noting that she didn’t know whether the boy was still listed in critical condition at the Hospital for Sick Children or not. “He is improving.” The boy’s 32-year-old mother, whose name is not being released to protect the identity of her son, was arrested early Friday, Aug. 30 after police were called to an apartment building at 19 Eva Rd. (near the West Mall and Bloor Street West) on an unknown trouble

call. After breaking in a glass door at the building’s lobby, police found the 11-year-old boy suffering from life-threatening head injuries inside one of the apartment units shortly after 1 a.m. Toronto EMS rushed the boy to SickKids, where he is slowly recovering from his injuries. His mother was arrested at the scene. In addition to the attempted murder charge, she is also facing charges of aggravated assault and failure to provide the necessities of life in connection with the case. She was denied bail at a hearing on Sept. 4 and remains in custody. The bail hearing proceedings – including the reasons for denying the woman bail – are under a publication ban. Drummond said her next court date is scheduled for Sept. 25.

Catch 22 makes 22 arrests since Woman victim of purse snatching program launched in February Police recently made two more Catch 22 arrests – bringing to 22 the number of most wanted suspects apprehended since the program launched in February. Ryan Stuart Gillard, 36, was profiled in The Guardian back in July. He was wanted by police in south Etobicoke’s 22 Division on charges of:

failing to stop for police; two counts of failure to comply with probation; and three counts of failure to comply with recognizance. He was arrested on Friday, Aug. 23 and appeared in court on Aug. 24. The Guardian also profiled Kory Alleyne, 23, back in August. He was wanted

as black, aged 20 to 23, 6’1”, 150 pounds, with a thin build.

A 45-year-old woman had her purse snatched during a mugging near Kipling and Finch West avenues on Monday. According to police, a male suspect approached the victim from behind at around 8:35 p.m., grabbed her, the snatched her purse and her necklace before fleeing the scene. The victim sustained only minor injuries. The suspects is described

by 22 Division officers on a charge of failure to comply with recognizance. He surrendered to police on Thursday, Aug. 29 and appeared in court later that same day. For more information on the Catch 22 program, follow 22 Division on Facebook or @ the22news on Twitter.

Ryerson given year to find spot for iconic sign

Councillors vote to give university time to find new location for Sam the Record Man marquee DAVID NICKLE dnickle@insidetoronto.com The iconic Sam the Record Man sign that hung in front of the Yonge Street store won’t be hanging over the Ryerson student learning centre building under construction on the site – but Toronto and East York Community Council has voted to give the university a year to find another spot on its campus to display the sign. The compromise position came after nearly three hours of debate Tuesday afternoon and evening, as Ryerson University officials asked to be let out of a 2009 deal with the city to re-hang the 1960sera neon sign on the front of the new building. Ryerson and city staff had agreed that the sign, which mimics a pair of spinning vinyl records – could pose an environmental hazard if it were to leak mercury from the vintage neon lighting system. As well,

the university’s consultants said that there would be difficulty safely mounting the sign on the new structure and it would also be hard to find skilled technicians to maintain the out-of-date sign. The debate was at times emotional, as musicians and music lovers converged on the community council to urge them not to let Ryerson off the hook. “This piece is recognized... as an iconic landmark,” said deputant Kurt Swinghammer. “Toronto has so often destroyed its heritage, and this is an opportunity to preserve it.” Jazz musician Jane Burnett was furious at the prospect of the sign being lost to public view, pointing out that Sam the Record Man was one of the few places that Canadian artists could see their work available. “If that sign does not go

Toronto and East York Community Council has agreed to give Ryerson University a year to find a new location to hang the iconic Sam the Record Man sign, which was a staple on Yonge Street for 50 years. The university is developing the old Sam building into a student learning centre.

up then this is a total insult to the music industry all over Canada.... I just think it’s shocking if the city cooperates with this. I’m just

disgusted... If Sam was here right now the deal would be over. He’d say forget it, man. Not happening.” The proposal from Ryerson

included other ways to commemorate Sam’s – notably, a commemorative insert on the sidewalk outside the building at Yonge and Gould Streets, and a website that would provide historical context to the record store owned by the late Sam Sniderman. Local councillor Kristyn Wong-Tam moved the amendment that would require Ryerson to display the sign, but not necessarily on the building. And she supported

the other commemorative elements. “We keep talking about these iconic signs and not talking about the person. I think the website to celebrate this man Sam is quite fulsome. We will have to decide what to do about these signs at some point in the future.” St. Pauls Councillor Josh Matlow was less forgiving, and said that Ryerson ought simply be held to the original agreement. “For decades Toronto has done an awful job at protecting our story,” he said. “In Boston they protect 350 year old buildings. I think we should be able to protect a sign. I see this as capitulating.” In the end, the community council supported the amendment. Council will have final word at its Oct. 8 meeting.

In the Neighbourhood CONSUMER FEATURE

Etobicoke

The Kingsway is a premier neighbourhood in Toronto’s west end north of Bloor St, south of Dundas Street, and between Mimico Creek and the Humber River. It is generally an affluent area, and known for its towering maple and oak trees that are prevalent throughout the streets. The Kingsway Road winds through the core of this neighbourhood and is a relaxed shopping strip with both ethnic and chain restaurants, pubs and bars, bakeries, and specialty stores. Busier Bloor Street with its central treed boulevard and flower beds offers more restaurants and shopping, plus the Arthur Murray Dance School. Home types vary by street from well-appointed

traditional homes to more modern apartment buildings. Thanks to its British-influenced heritage there are many Tudor and classic Georgian homes – magnificent to behold for those strolling around the area. A family friendly area, you’ll find the Brentwood Road Library, the Memorial Pool and Health Club, several churches, and the nearby beautiful Park Lawn Cemetery. Parks include Home Smith Park with its pleasant picnic areas and salmon spotting, and Kings Mill Park with its cycling trails. Additional entertainment includes the Kingsway Movie Theatre and the nearby Lambton Golf and Country Club. The area is well serviced by transit including the Royal York and Old Mill subway stations plus several bus lines. Montgomery’s Inn and the Old Mill Inn & Spa are two of the area’s historic destinations. Montgomery’s Inn is part of several festivals during the year, is a museum, hosts a Shakespearean theatre company, and holds an organic farmer’s market Wednesday afternoons. The luxury Old Mill Inn is nestled into the beautiful Humber Valley, with a charming and renowned jazz bar, and offers classic Sunday brunches in its historic dining room.

The two teams qualified for the provincials with Bloordale winning the Toronto Baseball Association’s west playoff tournament and Leaside winning the east. Major Mosquito ‘A’ team Bloordale’s major mosquito ‘A’ team settled for the silver medal at the Ontario Baseball Association provincial championships in Niagara Falls over the Labour Day weekend. Having secured the gold medal at the Toronto Baseball Association (TBA) championships earlier in the month, the Bloordale team was denied another gold medal in the

double knock-out championship tournament by a pesky team from the village of Wyoming, near Sarnia. In fact, it was the only team they lost to; but unfortunately they lost to them twice. Bloordale compiled wins over the host team from Niagara Falls, South-West London and Milton before losing to Wyoming for the first time. Bloordale then went back to work, beating Kitchener in the semifinal game. This earned them a berth in the championship game where they lost for the second time to their nemesis, Wyoming. ~ Norm Nelson

Bloordale’s select rookieball team closed out its season as finalists in the Select Ontario Baseball Association’s provincial championship tournament. Down 6-0 after the first half, Bloordale managed to make it a tight contest, losing the championship game 13-9 to a cross-city rival team from Leaside. The 12-team championship tournament was hosted by Etobicoke over Labour Day weekend. The two teams had previously met up in a tournament in Aurora with Bloordale losing to Leaside in a semifinal game after winning in the preliminary round.

Ford introduces first bacon-wrapped car Bacon has been a cornerstone of cuisine since ancient Rome. In recent years the cured meat has transformed from a food to a lifestyle inspiring everything from medical supplies to plush toys. On August 31, International Bacon Day, Ford savored the salty side dish with the introduction of what is believed to be the first bacon-wrapped car – a 2014 Ford Fiesta. Ford is announcing the availability of custom bacon graphics that pork purists can have installed on their new Fiesta.

The piece de resistance is the full “Bacon Wrap” – 10 giant strips of delicious bacon rolled around the entire Fiesta for a carb-free ride. While the bacon-wrapped Fiesta has all the looks of indulgence, it’s incredibly lean at the pump – with an EPA-estimated rating of up to (US) 41 mpg on the highway. And unlike bacon grease, nothing gets sizzled away from the Fiesta interior, with technology and features worthy of a blue ribbon at any county fair. The bacon graphics are just a few

custom exterior vinyl graphics Fiesta buyers can have installed on their ride to express their personalities. The wraps are produced by Ford Custom Graphics, along with 3M Original Wraps, and are available at www.fordcustomgraphics.com.

Ford gives “breakfast to go” a whole new meaning by wrapping a 2014 Ford Fiesta in bacon.

Canadian-made Corolla aims for top spot At the Canadian press launch of the 2014 Corolla held in Quebec City, the importance of the 11th generation compact sedan to Toyota’s viability was stressed repeatedly. Corolla practically invented the compact car segment, building its reputation on quality, practicality and reliability. In fact, some 80 per cent of Corollas built in the Toyota Motor Manufacturing (TMMC) plant in Cambridge, Ont., are still on the road. To date, more than 1.3 million Corollas have been sold in Canada and it is the most massed produced car in history, with more than 40 million and counting. The first hint of design mojo was seen in January at the Detroit Auto Show with that Corolla Furia Concept. All the styling cues from the Furia can be found on the 2014 Corolla – from the deep and large trapezoid grille to the standard LED highlights set far back on the fenders to give a swept back line to the car. Folks, this is one car you have to see in the flesh, especially beside an older model. There will be four models: CE, LE, S and the new Eco with starting prices of $15,995, $19,215, $19,500 and $20,250 respectively.

Buyers can chose from two versions of its 1.8-litre DOHC inline four-cylinder with 132 hp and 128 lb/ft of torque on the CE, LE and Sport and 140 hp and 126 lb/ft of torque on the Eco, which Toyota calls its most fuel efficient and powerful Corolla ever. Also new on the LE, S and Eco is a new Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) that Toyota calls the CVTi-S (I for intelligent, S for shift). The CVT is the first pulley-style unit in North America. The base CE has a four-speed automatic or six-speed manual transmission. The Eco is a new trim model that uses the engine tuned for fuel economy and underbody panels plus low rolling resistance tires for greater overall efficiency. The new Corolla’s suspension uses a Macpherson strut design for the front with a new, more rigid control arm design. A torsion beam arrangement is used for the rear. Both suspension layouts have been designed to take advantage of the additional body rigidity to provide improved handling responses and steering control. While the spring rates on Corolla have been optimized for ride comfort, the Smodel features unique coil, damper, and

$

bushing tuning to help offer a sportier driving characteristic. When journalists came back from driving the new Corolla, all they could talk about was the CVT. “It’s a CVT that doesn’t act like one, said my co-driver meaning the whine and leisurely acceleration of early CVTs was not present. We spent all of our time in the S model with the more sporting suspension, with my co-driver, an accomplished racecar driver and go-kart instructor, whistling through some back roads north of Quebec City. In manual shift mode, the CVT has seven speeds actuated by paddle shifters. With the engine on full song, and the paddle shifters being played like a ragtime piano, crisp shifts up and down were felt through the steering wheel and the seat. This is the first CVT I’ve come across that’s fun to use and, unbelievably, in a car costing under twenty grand. But while most people will never take the Corolla on the Nurburgring, they will use it for just about everything else a family needs. While the 2014 Corolla is slightly longer, wider and lower which accounts for

its small appearance, most of the volume is set aside for five adults. With the front passenger seat all the way back, I rode in the rear during the afternoon and can report there was more than enough legroom to the point I actual dozed off for a few minutes such, was the smoothness of the ride and that on potholed Quebec roads. I have to mention the front seats, that while larger, have a new thinner back that is supportive for those in front while gaining precious knee room millimeters for those in the back. Trunk space is larger than the 2013 model at 369 litres (13.0 cu ft) primarily due to the higher deck lid. That in turn makes ordering a version with

the backup camera something to seriously consider. And of course I cannot stress how important the Corolla is to the Canadian and Ontario economies. How it is built is a direct reflection of what this country can do and I challenge anyone to find a misaligned body panel or shut line on this car. Believe me, I looked at each and every one at the press launch. The Corolla is more than the start of Toyota’s avowed goal to become the best selling compact car in Canada but it could be a game changer for the brand around the world. – Jim Robinson Metroland Media

retro return Building a winner right out of the gate can be both a blessing and a curse. Take the first generation Ford Mustang for instance. Here’s a vehicle that began as a nice, tight – and I’ll add iconic. But, over the generations, no matter what exterior mods were applied to this car – be it spoilers, lowered fascia, side scoops, whatever – it never held a candle to Ford’s first efforts. Which was why so many Mustang fans welcomed its retro return for the 2005 model year. The current generation, which blends late 1960’s styling with today’s driver tech, now includes the best looking, best performing models to date. One of these was my tester for the week, the V6 ‘Premium’ Convertible. Premium trim is the only way you can order the Mustang droptop with V6 engine, making it

the least expensive convertible option at $32,499, not including special incentives at time of writing. Other convertibles include the GT with 5.0-litre V8 (420 hp, 390 lb/ft) and the Shelby GT500 with 5.8-litre supercharged V8 (662 hp, 631 lb/ft). All that brawn is nice, but I was just fine tooling around town with Ford’s 305-hp 3.7-litre V6 under the hood. Sure, it can’t match its siblings on any performance metric – in particular the asphaltripping Shelby – but with a nice burble coming off its wide-bore dual exhausts, I felt in no way shortchanged. You can order the V6 Mustang with six-speed auto, but mine thankfully came with the standard-equipped six-speed manual. Its short-throw shifter is a joy to work, and the clutch has a nice, smooth takeup that gets you off the lights without drama.

The launch supplied by this engine should satisfy most drivers, in particular when using the manual gearbox. What impressed me far more than any of this is the styling. I’ve tested vehicles costing three and four times the convertible’s sticker price that haven’t turned nearly as many heads. Everywhere I drove, top up or down, I received warm smiles and thumbs-up, along with no shortage of praise from passersby almost every time I got in or out of the vehicle. All that for a design that’s now nearly a decade old. Of course, the ‘Gotta Have It’ green paint job with black top and Mustang Club of America striping didn’t hurt. This $2,900 package adds a dark stainless steel billet grille, fog lamps, rear decklid spoiler, 18-inch aluminum wheels and more. Overall, the look is classic, yet

clean, with an alchemy of dimensions, curves and character lines that somehow outshines even the most fetching models from the past. Ford engineers were equally meticulous on the inside. They’ve included a few well-chosen retro cues – like the old-school gauges and steering wheel – and have incorporated modern updates like a multi-info display between the speedo and tach, and controls for cruise, phone and audio on the wheel. Climate and audio, along with a host of other functions are now handled via the eight-inch SYNC touchscreen that on my car

also included optional voice-activated navigation and rearview camera. Seating up front is as comfortable as it is attractive with the optional $1,500 leather package. It is also manageable in rear, provided the front buckets are positioned for a driver and front passenger of medium height. I’ve always believed that once you reach a certain age, mine for example, it’s time to buy the car you really want – and then battle with your spouse as to who gets stuck with the blasted minivan.

Chevy’s Clean Turbo Diesel sets Canadian fuel consumption record After eight days on the Trans-Canada highway, the 2014 Chevrolet Cruze Clean Turbo Diesel and the husband-wife team of Garry Sowerby and Lisa Calvi arrived in Halifax on Friday, August 30 with an average fuel consumption reading of just 4.3 L/100km. The driver information centre (DIC) “trip Aâ€? last reset in Vancouver displayed the following information upon arrival in Halifax: Â&#x; Overall Trip: 5955.8 km Â&#x; Overall Average fuel consumption: 4.3 L/100km

DUE To popUlAR DEmAND

Â&#x; Overall Average speed: 80.3 km/h “We had a great trip across the country, showing Canadians and ourselves that to do a massive road trip can be fun, frugal and fuel efficient,â€? says Lisa Calvi. “In fact, we drove over 1,400 kms on our best tank of fuel. Overall, the Cruze consumed 250.9 litres of diesel fuel for the entire trip, costing just over $300.â€? “We set a record by driving the speed limit, or just slightly below, with the right product,â€? says

Garry Sowerby. “We used the most fuel-efficient non-hybrid car on the market. The 2014 Cruze Clean Turbo Diesel was chosen for this adventure for its industry best 4.2 L/100km highway fuel consumption – better than any non-hybrid passenger car in Canada. The Cruze also offers a segment leading 151 hp and 264 lb/ft of torque providing spirited performance and the durability diesel owners value around the globe. The fuel tank on the Cruze Diesel holds 59 litres

of diesel fuel. With a starting price of just $24,945, plus $1,550 destination charge, the Chevrolet Cruze Diesel is a better value than a similarly equipped VW Jetta TDI automatic. Compared with Jetta, the Cruze Diesel offers standard equipment including the Chevrolet MyLink infotainment system, larger 17-inch alloy wheels, leather-appointed seating, and a longer five-year 160,000-kilometre powertrain limited warranty.

Ten focus groups created to discuss new library design >>>from page 1 be designed.” Work on the 32,000 square foot library, which was first opened in 1973, is slated to begin towards the end of 2014, with an anticipated project completion date in 2016. Bailey said the “heavily used” library is in definite need of revitalization – and also needs “significant” stateof-good-repair work – but that the jury is still out on whether or not it will be torn down and rebuilt or simply gutted and renovated. “We’re having the whole building assessed, so we’re looking at both options right now,” she said. “Either way, it will be a completely revitalized library of approximately the same size (as it is now).” Included in the reno plans are: zoned areas for adults, teens and children; a new early literacy centre and a middle years area; increased quiet study space; an increase in the number public access computers; better meeting

spaces; improved washroom facilities; improvements to the library’s exterior; and enhanced outdoor spaces around the library. The community consultation process for the redesigned Albion library are already underway. Library officials met with the library’s youth advisory group in August and were slated to meet with adult and senior library patrons at the branch on Wednesday evening. They’re also slated to take the consultations to local schools, with at least one upcoming meeting with the Grade 4 class at Highfield Junior School. Bailey said library officials would like to hear from as many people as possible before the design process begins. “What we like to hear from people is what’s important to them in the library and what they’d like to see in the library in terms of services – because, really, the form of any building follows the function of

ing children, youth, adults, seniors, newcomers, community agencies and local businesses at the library and in the community. Here are dates for four upcoming ses-

sions at Albion library in the meeting room: Monday, Sept 16, 4:30 to 5:30 p.m.: Newcomers Tuesday, Sept 17, 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.: Adult and senior
