Good Writers: Primary English Conference 2022 Tuesday 11 October 2022 Ashford International Hotel

As well as the key speakers delegates will have the opportunity to attend two workshops during the day, along with time to network and browse our marketplace. Biographies and full workshop information can be found on CPD online. There will be workshops and stands offering a packed day of professional development that will reignite your passion for leading English! Nikki Gamble

This year’s conference will focus on the impact that being a ‘good reader’ has on children’s writing. With a heavy focus on phonics recently we will consider how we develop wider reading, including reading for pleasure as a means of expanding children’s experiences, sentence structures and vocabulary, leading to greater enjoyment and confidence as writers.

Chris Connaughton Chris has a history of working in live children’s theatre and in radio –therefore is experienced in public performance and public speaking. He has also written books for children and works as a visiting author and storyteller. Chris will be presenting one of our keynotes and a workshop on how to be a more confident storyteller.

With 40 years experience in education as a teacher and teacher educator, providing literacy training and resources for schools, colleges and universities, Nikki has worked extensively in schools across the UK and internationally. She is the author of Exploring Children’s Literature (4th edit) (2019), co-author of Guiding Readers (2016) and Poetry by Heart. Nikki is a KS2 reading adviser and series consultant for Oxford University Press and content creator for the Oxford School Improvement and Oxford Owl websites. Mark Anderson A former teacher and school leader Mark is a passionate advocate for the purposeful use of technology linked to pedagogy. His mission has always been to impact positively on the futures of children, which has led to him leaving the classroom to pursue that aim on a larger scale. His ICT Evangelist blog won the Education Blog of the Year award in 2015 and he has picked up numerous other accolades over the years.

Key notes will be from Anthony Barlow, principal lecturer and subject leader for geography at the University of Roehampton, and Stuart Tiffany (mrtdoeshistory.com) an experienced teacher and history specialist and member of the Historical Association Primary Committee. Both speakers will focus on ways of deepening historical and geographical knowledge through curriculum development and implementation. This half day conference is open to primary school middle/senior leaders of history, geography and wholeschool curriculum leaders.

Deepening and Connecting Knowledge - The Next Steps for Your School Humanities Curriculum

3

This conference offers the opportunity to hear from several schools with established humanities curricula about their curriculum journeys to date, Ofsted experiences and future plans. Delegates will take away practical ideas and strategies to be able to use in school straight away. There will also be opportunities to network with other leaders through the morning.

Karen Wilding – Founder of EY Maths Karen started life, like so many do, hating maths and failing at every stage. It was only in her thirties, as the result of attending some great training as a teacher herself, that she realised it wasn’t maths, or her - it was the way she had been taught. Since this life-changing revelation (no exaggeration), she’s passionately pursued a quest to build her own maths subject knowledge, teach maths in ways that are meaningful and connected, research how the brain learns and makes sense of this amazing subject and pass this knowledge on to others.

4 The 3 ‘I’s of Primary Maths: Interactive, Investigative, Inclusive: Primary Maths Conference Thursday 17 November 2022 Ashford International Hotel

– Director of NCETM Debbie has a passion for mathematics and has significant expertise in the primary phase. She has taught every age range from Foundation to Year 6 and has been a headteacher. Subsequently she worked as a mathematics adviser for a local authority and has been involved in initial teacher education at Northampton University where she was a Senior Lecturer in Mathematics Education.

Amanda Keen – Dyscalculia specialist teacher and assessor

Having qualified as a teacher in 1995, Amanda spent 17 years teaching across the whole of the primary age range (Early Years to Year 6). She then worked in Learning Support across Key Stages 1 to 4 in both independent and special schools, before retraining as a specialist dyscalculia teacher and assessor. Amanda now tutors internationally via remote learning platforms and is an online assessor for dyscalculia. She has spoken at several conferences and led a number of webinars, and is currently a Maths Hub Lead for a SEND work group. Delegates will also have the opportunity to attend two workshops across the course of the day. Full biographies on all speakers and information on all of the workshops can be found on CPD Online.

Our conference will focus on the key ingredients of successful mathematics teaching and learning. For our pupils to achieve their full potential they need to: interact with mathematical structures and concepts using a hands-on approach; develop an investigative, exploratory mind to grow their resilience and perseverance; and, be supported as learners through scaffolding or stretching.

7 We have two new exciting TEP Talks for the autumn term. Alex explores the current writing challenges facing our pupils, including the potential impact of the pandemic on writing. He shares compelling evidence and crucial strategies that can be applied across primary classrooms. From handwriting, spelling, teaching the writing process, sentence variation approaches, Alex brings a wealth of practical strategies to close the gap. In this TEP Talks we will offer thoughts on the following: • What do we mean by ‘progression’ in reading comprehension? • What are the key sticking points in reading comprehension? • The relationship between word-reading, fluency and understanding. • Making sure more reading happens.
