The Dalai Lama o f Tibet is one o f the most respected leaders living today. He is the spiritual and political leader o f six million Tibetans, yet he calls himself a simple Buddhist monk. In 1989, he received the Nobel Peace Prize fo r his practice o f non violence and his humane approach to world peace. Although his country continues to remain under Chinese occupation, the Dalai Lama has no hatred towards the Chinese. He consistently has opposed the use o f violence. He always wants a peaceful solution fo r his country through negotiated dialogues with the Chinese leadership. The Dalai Lama truly cares fo r people everywhere. Everything he does is fo r the sake o f achieving peace on this planet. His teachings are always simple and easy to understand. He alw ays says, "My m essage is the practice ofcompassion, love, and kindness. These things are very useful in our daily life, and also fo r the whole our daily life, and also fo r the whole o f human society. Rightfrom the moment o f our birth, we are un der the care and kindness o f our parents. And then later on in our life, when we are oppressed by sickness and becom e old, we are again dependent on the kindness o f others, And since at the beginning and end of our lives, we are so dependent on others' kindness, how can it be in the middle that we neglect kindness towards others?” Like many young Tibetans His Holiness the Dalai Lama has always been the source o f my inspirations. I often attended his lectures. I always remeber one thing which he says again and again. That is, "Be a compassionate person. Always try ro help others. I f you cannot help others at least try not to harm or offend others”. To me this is the greatest teaching I have ever learned. I always try to put this into prtactice. I cannot do much to help others. But I always try not to offend or harm others. This is something I can do and get a great sense o f satisfaction by doing this. -Tenzin Dolkar, Class o f 1995

Stopping By The Woods On A Snowy Evening Whose woods these are I think I know, His house is in the village though; He will not see me stopping here To watch his woods fill up with snow. My little horse must think it queer To stop without a farmhouse near Between the woods and frozen lake. The darkest evening of the year. He gives his harness bells a shake. To ask if there is some mistake. The only other sound's the sweep Of easy wind and downy flake. The woods are lovely, dark and deep But I have promises to keep. And miles to go before I sleep And miles to go before I sleep. -Robert Frost

Once there was, in a green town, lived a man, a green man. The green man lived in a green house, with green door, and green windows. He had green wife, and two green children and in the nights, he was sleeping in his green bed, and was dreaming green, green dreams. One day awoke the green man in a green moming, wore green shoes, green shirt, and green pants. On his head he wore a green hat, and went out. The green man got into his car, and drovein the green road, with green speed. From one side of the road saw the green man a green sea, and from the other side, many green flowers. It was a beautiful day. And the green man was happy, and sang green songs, and smoked a green cigarette with green smoke. And then saw the green man, that on the side of the road is standing a blue man the green man stopped his green car and asked the blue man: "Hey, blue man, what are you doing here?" "Me?" said the blue man," I am from another story." -Yonatan Geffen

cosmetic plague-being honest is no means of survival avoid your inner-feeling like the plague this is what it takes to comply with the images this structure will accommodate but things aren't what they seem when they're partially hidden behind walls of pretense built for peace of mind the barriers between us are forever maintained but our acceptance of the roles others choose to define in a world of compe足 tition life's portrayed as a contest where we're forced to live by mak足 ing gains at others expense but no one's really gaining when per足 petual conflict's the result of our relationships based on pretense we don't need this cultural cosmetic division it upholds the self-interest on which the system feeds a deconditioned consciousness of mutual respect is the only way to cure this cosmectic disease. -Rudimentary Penn, 1982

The key to excellence is not in being able to see it, recognize it, or touch it, and to appreciate it when you have it.. The key to excellence lies in continuing to pursue, reach, and stretch for it at a time when it is yet to becom e a reality. Excellence can only be achieved when it's relentlessly pursued, often in spite o f the circum stances rather than because o f them.

The Chancellor's Page

In order to face your parents, teachers, companions, and ultimately yourself, the following should be adhered to: Guidelines It may be twenty years before you reap the full rewards of these recommendations 1. To stand upright and see clearly you must be o f firm will, created through singleminded, unregressing, rigorous practice fo r a long time. 2. To uphold correct principles requires one to cultivate knowledge, develop inner mastery and virtue. One must assiduously avoid acting in common and vulgar ways. 3. To perfect your will place yourself in different situations, accept hardships and encounter perils and obstacles. The avoidance of difficulties and hardship must ruin a person. 4. To avoid being encumbered with a thousand pound albatross about your neck, be careful about each and every minor action. Ultimately the weight o f sloth, bad habits and self-indulgence drags a person down. 5. Whatever you do be careful about the ending and the beginning for anyone may begin something but few can bring it to a conclusion. Stephen Spahn, November 12, 1994 106
