Knight Rider in France
by Roxanne Knight

In my last article, I was talking about riding in all weathers and this summer has been a real test! Unfortunately at one point during the heatwaves we were unable to ride at all but we both benefitted from this short break and before we knew it, we were back in training mode.
My coach unexpectedly proposed a summer show! Traditionally the season finishes for me before the summer and the new season starts again properly in October. However this year was different. Mid August, Eclair and I travelled to a big and exciting show called the “Sologn'Pony”. It is held in the same show grounds as the Championnat de France and the competition is high. We competed over several days and had a great start to the new season, racking up some early points towards qualification for 2023. Earlier this year we decided not to continue aiming for the 2022 championship. We had to be sensible and realise that we weren't ready. When we go, we want to perform well and be proud and enjoy it too. It's a lot of work and expense and we can achieve so much more and do so much better with another year of coaching and training under our belts.
We have a very busy weekend. Its the “Tournée des As” at our club in Bressuire. Eclair and I are doing 2 rounds each day as we are now actively competing at 90cm as well as 80cm which I am really pleased with as this feels like significant progress. To give you an idea, in July 2021 we got eliminated at 60cm …
The Tournée des As is meant to be a competition of the best – the “Aces” so the courses are usually more technical. I will be trying hard to get a clear round as it's double qualifying points! In my last article, we were heading off to Le Mans for our first ever three day show. It seems so long ago and I have been so lucky to compete at many shows between then and now. We did get a clear round during those days and also took away a lot of experience. So off we head, at full speed knowing Eclair, into season 2023 and we have everything crossed that we will feel ready and have enough qualifying points to enter the Championnat de France 2023.
If you would like to follow our journey, please head over to my YouTube channel, “Knight Rider in France” or search for us on Instagram or Facebook. Your support means a lot.
Thank you to the DSM magazine for their support and thank YOU for reading. A bien tôt! Special thanks also to Cheval Chic and my family!
Bilingual Nine Lessons and Carols
Vouvant, Sunday 11th December 2022 at 16.00 – everyone is welcome
All Saints, Vendée, covering the Vendée and the Deux-Sèvres, is a small and very friendly group of people who meet every second and fourth Sunday in Ste. Marthe, Puy de Serre, (very near the Vendée-Deux-Sèvres border), and on the first Sunday of every month in La Chapelle Palluau (near Aizenay in the west of the Vendée). Services last about an hour, and, being a very sociable bunch, we have coffee and a bring and share lunch afterwards in the Salle Paroissale, or at someone’s home. The congregation usually numbers 25-30. We follow the Anglican liturgy, and so services (usually communion) are in English, and there is a Sunday Club for children aged from 7 upwards. All Saints, Vendée very much welcomes local people, whatever their nationality or Christian faith. In January every year, we hold an oecumenical service as part of the “Week of Christian Unity”, a service which unites Catholic, French Protestant and Anglican congregations, and is always held after much planning and discussion! This year, for the first time, ASV will be having a bilingual “Nine Lessons and Carols”, in the wonderful church at Vouvant, with its magnificent North door sculptures from about 1150, and the nave built by Bishop Theodelin in 1028. The setting should be magical, especially as the service will start under the lights at 16.00, on Sunday 11 December. It will be an excellent opportunity for those who do not know us to come and see ASV in action, and to enjoy what is certain to be a very special event. “Nine Lessons and Carols” are rare enough in France, and even rarer in such beautiful surroundings. And Vouvant is such a lovely little village! The organ will be played by Yves Rousseau – we are very fortunate to have his superlative playing on an instrument which has only very recently been installed. Anyone who has heard it will surely want to hear it again! So why not come along, on the first, second or fourth Sunday of each month, see what ASV does and how we do it, and share a coffee afterwards! You will be most welcome! Or come to the bilingual service on 11 December at 16.00 in Vouvant.

The first residential crew arrives aboard the International Space Station. Two Russians, Yuri Gidzenko, Sergei Krikalev, and NASA’s Bill Shepherd were selected as the crew of Expedition 1 and its arrival marked the beginning of a new era of international co-operation in space and of the longest continuous human habitation in low Earth orbit, which continues to this day.

Abraham Lincoln is elected the 16th president of the United States, becoming the first Republican to win the presidency. Lincoln received only 40 percent of the popular vote but defeated the other three candidates. Before Lincoln’s inauguration, eleven Southern states had seceded from the Union and weeks after his swearing-in, the Confederate Army fired on Fort Sumter and started the Civil War.

Long a symbol of the Cold War, the Berlin Wall, was opened by the East German government allowing travel from East to West Berlin. The following day, celebrating Germans began to tear the wall down. One of the most infamous symbols of the Cold War, it was soon reduced to rubble that was quickly snatched up by souvenir hunters. The East German action followed a decision by Hungarian officials a few weeks earlier to open the border between Hungary and Austria. This act made the Berlin Wall pointless as East German citizens could now circumvent it by going through Hungary, into Austria, and from there into West Germany.

The first flying trapeze act was performed in Paris, by Jules Léotard, without the use of a safety net. The one-piece garment that he popularized was named after him.

Queen Mary I, the monarch of England and Ireland since 1553, dies and is succeeded by her 25-year-old half-sister, Elizabeth. The two half-sisters were both daughters of King Henry VIII. Soon after her accession, Mary, a Catholic enacted pro-Catholic legislation and made efforts to restore the pope to supremacy in England. A Protestant rebellion ensued and Queen Mary imprisoned Elizabeth, a Protestant, in the Tower of London on suspicion of complicity. After Mary’s death, Elizabeth survived several Catholic plots against her; though her ascension was greeted with approval by most of England’s lords, who were largely Protestant and hoped for greater religious tolerance under a Protestant queen.

The first episode of the British science-fiction television series Doctor Who aired on the BBC. The Doctor was played by William Hartnell until 1966, when the show revealed that Time Lords had the ability to regenerate themselves when near death allowing different actors to assume the title role. The Doctor, with a variety of companions, travelled through time and space in his unique craft, the TARDIS, an acronym for Time and Relative Dimensions in Space. With an interior larger than its exterior, the TARDIS could take on various shapes to blend into its environment, although it is predominately seen in the form of a blue police box.

On November 24, 1974, the fossils of an early human ancestor are discovered in north-eastern Ethiopia. Soon nicknamed "Lucy," the remains showed that human species were walking upright over three millions years ago. The groundbreaking discovery made by anthropology professor Donald Johanson and his research assistant Tom Gray at the Hadar paleontological site, would lead to the excavation of several hundred fragments of bone over two weeks, making up 40 percent of a single hominin skeleton. The name Lucy was inspired by the Beatles’ song “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds” which Johanson’s team played on repeat as they drank, danced and sang in celebration of their finding

An unusual storm system finally dissipates over England after wreaking havoc on the country for nearly two weeks. Featuring hurricane strength winds, the storm killed between 10,000 and 30,000 people. Hundreds of Royal Navy ships were lost to the storm, the worst in Britain’s history. Towns such as Plymouth, Hull, Cowes, Portsmouth and Bristol were devastated. However, the death toll really mounted when 300 Royal Navy ships anchored off the country’s southern coast—with 8,000 sailors on board—were lost. The Eddystone Lighthouse, built on a rock outcropping 14 miles from Plymouth, was felled by the storm.

The Flying Scotsman becomes the first steam locomotive to be officially recorded at 100 mph. The LNER Class A3 Pacific No. 4472 was built in 1923 for the London and North-eastern Railway at Doncaster to the design of Sir Nigel Gresley. 100 years earlier in 1830 Stephenson's Rocket reached a speed of 30 mph and in 2007 a French TGV recorded 357 mph.
