Tewkesbury’s Perplexing Treasure

Mission Hall, Barton Street

This apparently disused building, now owned by the Hospital, has been the frequent subject of discussion – particularly because of the Star of David which is incorporated into its fabric. It has never been a synagogue and was, for many years, the Mission Hall for Holy Trinity Church – it is, indeed, the adjoining building to Holy Trinity’s manse.

What, however, did surprise me was that it was, in fact, a Chapel built for Primitive Methodists and that the Star of David is a religious symbol for many religions. It is the tragic experience of the Jews in Nazi Germany, which convinces us that it is uniquely a Jewish symbol.

Holy Trinity Manse & former Mission Hall, Barton St.

It comprises two equilateral triangles and it is one of the oldest Christian symbols; initially representing Creation and, later, the three equal parts of the Trinity – Father, Son and Holy Spirit. It also became an important symbol of Unity in the Hebrew religion – firstly after a successful battle of King David and, subsequently, it was adopted by Zionists: Jews determined to set up a state in Palestine. When Israel was proclaimed in 1948, the Star was placed at the centre of the national flag. It was the Nazis who invested notoriety in the symbol. Because ‘Zion’ means Jerusalem, which is the centre also of Christianity, it is not surprising that there is a brand of ‘Zion Methodists’, found mainly today in the U.S.A. and Africa. Although today there is one united Methodist Church in the UK, there were rival sects until 1932: the ‘Wesleyans’ who tended to be middle class and the ‘Primitive Methodists’ who appealed to such as agricultural labourers who reacted against

DIRECTORIES | LOCALHISTORY HISTORY GLOS GLOS DIRECTORIES | LOCAL Wesleyan ‘respectability’ and wished to return to open air preaching by nonordained ‘local preachers’. It was a Primitive Methodist Minister, Mr Harris, who asked local builders Collins & Cullis to build them a Chapel for £750 and Berrow’s Journal reported the laying of foundation stones on 27 October 1873 by Misses Wellington and Potter from Gloucester. Why were no local ladies accorded this honour? Was it part of a “Mission” from Gloucester? I wonder if Gloucester readers can help identify these celebrities. The same newspaper of 28 March 1874 reported the New Chapel’s opening with three services – in the evening the congregation was so large it had to use the nearby Independent Chapel (now ‘Kingdom Hall’). The architecture was described in detail – but, significantly, there was no comment on our symbols. Only eight years later, on 7 October 1882, The Register reported: “We understand that the Primitive Methodist Chapel … having been offered for sale has been purchased by the Messrs. Healing and handed over to the incumbent of the Holy Trinity Church, for the various Trinity week day meetings etc. – such a building has been much needed.” In 1887 the widow of Trinity Vicar, Rev. F. J. Scott donated Beaufort House next door as the Vicar’s manse. Why did the chapel have so short an independent life? The Register, no friend to Non-Conformity, explained that “the efforts to get together a congregation were persisted in with a great show of energy for a year or two. Thereafter work appeared to be of a very spasmodic and unsettled kind, and the total collapse of the endeavour it was early evident was only a question of time.” It failed to point out that in 1878 the Wesleyan Methodists had opened the new and large church which still stands at the Cross. The Register’s opinion

was that “a community now numbering few if any over 6000 persons, and where, besides Romanists [Catholics of the Mythe] there are four or five Nonconformist’ societies [including Baptists and Independents] striving to get and to hold congregations together.” Trinity Hall continued to support the work of the Church in Oldbury Road. In 1932 the Vicar offered it to the Council for use by the unemployed for 5 days per week at nominal charge 5/- [25p] for cleaning. The Council accepted and provided free newspapers and magazines. In 1979 the Hall was taken over by the health Authority which today uses it as a storeroom. A humble use for a building that continues to perplex and fascinate passers-by. John Dixon, President Tewkesbury Historical Society with grateful research assistance from Wendy Snarey & Andrew Coggin.

The Life List

Reasons to be kind to your parents when you’re a kid 1.

They buy your clothes. And however terrible you think their fashion sense is now, they’re doing that with a sense of care. Just imagine how awful you’d look if they were dressing you with a sense of revenge.

2. They feed you. So indirectly, they’re responsible for deciding whether you grow up with sugar cravings, obesity, sensible eating habits or a perverse fondness for chicken liver smoothies. 3. They could wait until you have a great bunch of friends and then decide to move. You think social services are going to help with your relocation problem? Think again. 4. They tell Father Christmas what presents to leave. Yep, even that awful jumper from your spinster aunt that you had to wear on Christmas Day for the family photos. Trust me, they had a hand in that too. 5. Who do you think will insure your first car – and probably pay for the garage to fix it when you wreck it? That’s right – those mean folks

downstairs who won’t let you do whatever it is you think life won’t be worth living unless you do it. 6. They will demand to see your sweetheart and if you think that’s embarrassing, wait until they bring out the photo album with you on a rug, naked, with your bum in the air. (All parents do this – experts believe it’s a pay it forward revenge tactic.) 7. They’ll pick your schools and they set your pocket money. Ask any gambler – you can’t beat the house rules indefinitely. It’s the way of the world, so get used to it. 8. Bottom line – your inheritance is their scrimping and saving. So, for every penny they don’t give you for the latest computer game, the second it comes out in the shops, a proportion of that saving will one day find its way to you. It’s like a trickle down a mountain, gradually gathering in size. 9. They love you. And the really weird thing is that’s the reason they do all that crazy stuff to you. And the more you learn about their behaviour, the more you can inflict it on your own kids and then say, “Blame granddad and grandma – it’s how they brought me up.” That’s probably what your parents say too. © Derek Thompson “The pen is mightier than the sword and easier to carry in your trouser pocket.” www.alongthewritelines.blogspot.com

Seasonal Recipe Venison is a lean and flavoursome red meat which is in season from October through to February. For the best quality, buy from a trusted butcher or farmers’ market. This warming casserole is perfect for a weekend supper served with creamy mashed potato and a glass of full-bodied red wine. Place the venison in a bowl and pour over the wine. Add the juniper berries and bay leaves, cover and marinate in the fridge for 4-5 hours or overnight. Remove from the fridge 1 hour before starting to cook the casserole. Preheat the oven to 150ºC/300ºF/Gas Mark 2. Strain the venison from the red wine (reserving the wine). Heat half the oil and butter in a large flameproof casserole dish and fry the venison in 2-3 batches until browned all over, adding the rest of the oil and butter when necessary. Remove the venison with a slotted spoon and set aside. Add the onions to the casserole and fry for 6-7 minutes until golden, adding the garlic after 3 minutes. Sprinkle over the seasoned flour and fry for a further 1-2 minutes. Gradually stir in the wine and stock and bring to the boil, scraping any sediment from the base of the casserole. Add the venison, parsnips, carrots and half the thyme sprigs to the casserole and season with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Cover and cook in the preheated oven for 1½ – 2 hours until the venison and vegetables are tender. Remove from the oven and stir in the redcurrant jelly. Return the casserole, uncovered, to the oven for a further 20-30 minutes. Serve garnished with the rest of the thyme sprigs and with creamy mashed potato, if liked.

GLOS DIRECTORIES | BUSINESS & TECHNOLOGY TECH SPEC

How tech can stop you missing your favourite shows Page 16

With very few exceptions - major sporting events, the X Factor and so on - the days when we all watched the same programmes at the same time are long gone: increasingly TV is something we record and watch later on. But what happens if you forget to record something, or something went wrong with the recording? Don’t despair, because it’s never been easier to turn back time.

Ones To Watch We’re talking, of course, about catch-up TV: the sites and services that enable you to watch programmes that have already been broadcast. The best-known service is the BBC’s excellent iPlayer (www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer), which you can use to ensure you never miss an episode of Newsnight or EastEnders, and which is available not just for computers but for games consoles too. There’s also an app to watch iPlayer programmes on an iPhone or iPad. One of the great things about iPlayer is that it doesn’t just cover BBC One: there’s also the entertainment channel BBC 3, the arts channel BBC 4 and the children’s channels cBBC and cBeebies - which is really handy if the only thing that’ll calm the kids is a quick blast of In The Night Garden. Programmes are usually available immediately after broadcast, and they remain online for a week. The BBC isn’t the only major broadcaster offering catch-up TV. ITV has the ITV player (www.itv.com/ itvplayer), Channel 4 has 4oD (www.channel4.com/

programmes/4oD) and Channel Five has Demand Five (www.channel5. com/demand5). Like the BBC’s iPlayer they enable you to watch the last week of programming and they’re also available as apps for mobile phones and tablets, although unlike BBC iPlayer they include advertising as well as programming. For an easy way to search across all the broadcasters’ catch-up services, check out www.timefortelly. co.uk, a search engine for British catch-up TV. Sky’s catch-up services are subscriber-only: if you’re a Sky customer you can access Sky Go at go.sky. com. Catching up via computers, phones or tablets is very handy, but what about using your TV? If you’re with Virgin Media or Sky you can access catchup TV via your cable or satellite box, although you need a specific kind of box: with Virgin you need a Virgin Media TiVo, which gives you the BBC iPlayer, 4oD and ITV’s Net Player, and with Sky you need a broadband-connected Sky+ box to access its Sky Anytime+ service. It’s

a similar story with BT Vision: customers with a Vision+ box can access catch-up TV as part of their package. Freeview can do catch-up TV too: most Freeview HD TVs are Smart TVs, which means they can access BBC’s iPlayer if they’re connected to the internet, and many Freeview+ HD recorders can do the same. If you don’t have the hardware, however, you might want to buy something newer and more interesting: the new digital TV service YouView (www.youview.com) offers all the broadcasters, not just the BBC. For example, the Humax DTR-T1000 digital TV recorder gives you Freeview+ HD and YouView for a subscriptionfree of £279.95. Its 500GB hard disk gives you up to 300 hours of recording time. YouView’s on-demand and catch-up services make it one to watch, but if you’re considering it, it’s important to ensure your internet service is up to the job: YouView uses your internet connection to download programmes, so make sure your ISP account doesn’t have a small monthly data transfer limit.

Take The Floor Katherine Sorrell offers a guide to fabulous flooring, from the traditional to the unconventional

Oak Palazzo Rovere – a Dutch pattern design oak floor with a satin lacquer prefinish, from £50.15 per m², Kährs, 023 9245 3045; www.kahrs.co.uk.

Timber Timber boards are a fabulous choice: available in a range of colours and patterns, they just get more attractive as they age. If you’re lucky, you’ll be able to recondition an existing wood floor; otherwise, choose new hardwood from an environmentally friendly source, or perhaps seek out recycled boards in architectural salvage yards. Solid wood floors can be sanded, painted, limed, stained, waxed or varnished. Cheaper, but less longlasting, are either a multi-layered or veneered wood floor, where the surface is a thin layer of hardwood attached to a base of cheaper wood, MDF, cork or plywood; or a woodeffect floor, in which a photograph of wood is bonded to a chipboard base and protected with a high-pressure laminate surface.

good quality underlay is essential. Natural fibres In a wide range of colours and weaves, sisal, coir, seagrass, rush and jute are warm and soundproof and, often, good value for money. As you’d expect, the rougher the surface, the more hard-wearing it will be – so you may find sisal and coir uncomfortable underfoot at first. Jute has the softest feel, but is the least durable. As with carpet, a stain inhibitor is advisable for natural fibre flooring. Hard surfaces Sandstone, limestone, granite, marble and terrazzo are expensive floorings that last a lifetime, though they are hard, noisy and cold underfoot. In areas that might get wet, such as kitchens or bathrooms, choose a version that is matt or slightly textured – sanded for a rough finish, or riven for an attractive, hand-split effect. Terracotta and ceramic tiles have similar qualities but are cheaper and offer less of a luxury look. Ceramic tiles are heat- and water-resistant, hard-wearing and low maintenance. They vary widely in price and come in a vast array of shapes, sizes and designs, but all are liable to crack if something is dropped on them.

Carpet Carpet is another great choice: soft, warm and quiet underfoot. There are two main Katherine Sorrell offers types: woven, which is harder-wearing and more expensive, and tufted, the durability of a guide to fabulous which is related to its pile height and density (short, dense pile the is the toughest). Natural flooring, from wool looks beautiful and is long-lasting and fire-resistant, expensive; while cheaper, traditional tobut the man-made fibres may look unattractive Oak Palazzo Rovere – a Dutch pattern design oak floor with a satin lacquer £50.15 per m², Kährs, 023 9245 3045; www.kahrs.co.uk. flooring unconventional or not wear well. A popular solution is a prefinish, fromSheet Softer and warmer than stone or timber, sheet combination of the two (perhaps 80% wool floorcoverings – vinyl, linoleum and cork – and 20% nylon). Finally, remember that a Timber good quality underlay is essential. Leaves Are you surrounded, engulfed and swamped with huge quantities of fallen leaves? The deluge that falls at this time of year is often enough to make even the most level headed, tree-loving gardener eye up a chainsaw. So what can you do? Turn them in to gardeners’ gold: leafmould. If you want an environmentally friendly and very effective soil conditioner or mulching material, leafmould is the answer. If you have the space, make yourself a leafmould cage. Simply drive four treated softwood stakes into the ground, each stake marking out one corner of the ‘cage’. The stakes need to be about 1.5m (5ft) long so that they can be driven in really well, to a depth of 1-2ft, leaving 3-4ft above ground. Then attach some galvanized chicken wire to the stakes to create the sides of the cage and cram the cage full of leaves. If they aren’t moist, add a watering can of water to the heap of leaves, pouring some in after each six inches of leaves. You can also speed up the process by using a leafmould activator (available from garden centres, mail order catalogues and websites). Most deciduous leaves rot down well, especially oak and beech trees. Leaves from fruit trees, garden shrubs and climbers work well too. Try to avoid including too many twigs or evergreen leaves as these take much longer to rot, as do tough, leathery leaves such as those from sycamore, horse chestnut and plane. Most of us collect leaves using a springtined rake and although slower, it helps you avoid some materials more easily. A leaf sucker or a leaf blower is quicker but will often mean you end up with more twigs and stones. If your leaves are a wide-ranging assortment, then a good idea is to use the lawn mower – just mow the lawn with the leaves on it. The collection bag on the

mower will then be full of a brilliant mix of chopped leaves and even the slowerto-rot-down types will rot speedily as they have been chopped up quite finely. Mixed with the lush, high-nitrogen grass clippings, the whole process is sped up. If space, time or money are short then you can also make leafmould in a bin liner or bin bag. Choose a good quality bin liner and cram it full of leaves, again adding water and/or activator if you wish. Then stab a few holes in the bag with a garden fork, loosely fold over the top of the bag and weigh it down with a brick. You should have a useable product in 1218 months, but the longer you leave it the better. Leafmould will help to improve the moisture-retaining capacity of a light, sandy soil and reduce the aeration and drainage of a heavy clay soil. It also makes wonderful mulch that can be used on flower beds and borders, the vegetable plot, around trees and shrubs and on your fruit as well. It’s not often you get something for nothing, is it? So take advantage of all those leaves while you can. Burning Desire! Boom! A firework display erupts in a cascade of colour and noise, marking summer in a tourist town. Whoosh! A rocket arcs into the night sky to celebrate a birthday, wedding or special anniversary. Nowadays there is hardly a single event – summer or winter – that doesn’t merit a pyrotechnic show at the end, complete with its crowd of spectators providing the obligatory ‘oohs’ and ‘aahs’. So why does November 5th still hold such a special place in our hearts? It’s a fairly safe bet to say that the original reason for Bonfire Night – to commemorate the gory end of Jacobean terrorist Guido Fawkes and his fellow plotters – isn’t really on our minds these days when we celebrate the date. November 5th is one of those important times when young and old can come together – despite the dark and the cold winter weather – to enjoy a shared experience complete with its own traditions. Central to that ritual is the bonfire itself. The attraction of fire is hard-wired into our DNA. Some historians speculate that the activities we associate with Bonfire Night are actually borrowed from much earlier, pagan traditions and the dates certainly seem to fit. The ancient Celtic festival of Samhain began on October 31st (coincidentally our date for Halloween) and extended to the following day. At sunset on October 31st local villagers would assemble in order to build a giant bonfire, which then became the focal point of the event. The word ‘Samhain’ means “summer’s end” and communities came together both to thank the gods for the harvest and to help them face the long, dark months ahead. Ancient people also believed it was a time for contacting – and sometimes appeasing - the spirits of dead ancestors who might

Page 34

lend a hand from the ‘other side’ to help the community through the challenges of winter. At the end of the celebration, each family would take a torch from the bonfire and bring it back to their home, where all fires had been deliberately extinguished the day before. These fires were then re-lit using the flame of the sacred bonfire: it was believed that if the fire went out, troubles would follow. This summer it has been interesting to observe a shadow of this practice in the rituals surrounding the Olympic torch – particularly the care that has been taken in preserving the flame throughout the national relays building up to the opening ceremony of the 2012 games. We consider that we belong to an enlightened and sophisticated society, so it is fascinating to observe the extraordinary pains taken by officials to ensure that the light originally sourced from the Temple of Hera at Olympia in Greece is not extinguished. Just as our ancient forefathers venerated the fire from the sacred Samhain bonfire, we treat the Olympic flame as a living being that must not be allowed to ‘die’ in case our hopes of success are extinguished with it. So next time you are standing round a November 5th bonfire – or even lying back in the bath, surrounded by a mass of flickering candles – you can reflect on our very human need to use fire as a bringer of hope and cheer. We’ve selected some of the craftiest craft books that will have you feeling all warm and nostalgic in no time. With the holiday season just around the corner, it’s perfect timing. Remember: homemade gifts are for life, not just for Christmas. Make Do and Mend: Keeping Family and Home Afloat on War Rations Publisher: Michael O’Mara Duck the double-dip recession and take a leaf out of this reproduction 1940s instruction manual. If you’re planning a trip to Primark, think again; there may be some lost treasure in your wardrobe that can be transformed. This book is a lovely stroll down memory lane, with design ideas and simple instructions on making do with the homemade. You’ll certainly give more careful consideration to what pattern curtains you buy in the future.

The Complete Book of Retro Crafts: Collecting, Displaying & Making Crafts of the Past By Suzie Millions Publisher: Lark This book is like eating a FAB lolly while bouncing on a space hopper in a puff-ball skirt. It’s so retro it should be illegal. There are 40 projects with hints and tips on collecting and creating, ‘junking’ and hunting. Every charity shop and flea market will become a veritable treasure-trove. If quirky and old-school is your thing, then this book’s for you.

Kirstie’s Vintage Home Publisher: Hodder & Stoughton When does shabby become chic? Kirstie Allsopp knows. With tips and hints on how to find, restore and rejuvenate furniture and everyday objects, you’ll have everything you need to make sure you end up with a piece to treasure. The buzz-word of the day is ‘upcycling’, and we’re not talking the Tour de France.

Country Cottage Quilting: 15 Quilt Projects Combining Stitchery with Patchwork By Lynette Anderson Publisher: David and Charles Remember the movie ‘How to Make an American Quilt’? Well, our pick is more Antipodean than American. Australian designer Lynette Anderson has some beautiful ‘country cottage’ designs and shows you all the sewing and appliqué you’ll need to complete your own project. Just snuggling-up with the book and a cuppa will envelope you like…well, a big, fluffy quilt.

Page 38

Crochet For Children By Claire Montgomerie Publisher: Cico Books The craft that modernity forgot is making a comeback and this book will hook your children. All the basics are covered and there are 35 mini projects for them to tackle, everything from scarves to teddy bears. It’s fun for all the family when you’re drying off in front of the fire on ‘bath night’. If you’re going seventies, then you may as well go the whole hog. Scrapbook Secrets By Kimber McGray Publisher: F and W The art of scrapbooking should not be restricted to French exchange trips and Brownies badge projects. In this digital age we’ve loosened our grip on the tangible. In ‘Scrapbook Secrets’, Kimber McGray shares her tips on how to turn your memories into a masterpiece by rediscovering the art of decoupage, collage and collecting. With step-by-step instructions, you’ll be able to preserve your most cherished memories and family history, incorporated into your own work of art. Throw out the digital camera and buy a glue stick and some glitter. Then…go nuts!
