How curious can you be?
MULTINATIONALS: THE CURIOUS INCIDENT LIVE IN SA ʂʂ London-based pop rock group on tour promoting their recently released EP, Penny Lonesome. Genevieve Vieira
diverse bunch of musicians, the London-based pop rock group The Curious Incident represent four countries: South Africa, Italy, England and Indonesia. Formed through a selective process by South African-bornand-bred Cavey Roberts, the lead singer travelled the earth to find, as he describes: “The funniest and finest musical creatures on the planet.” When asked if there are any communication barriers, Roberts jokes: “Potresti ripetere la domanda?” which according to Google means “Could you repeat the question?” His point made. Their aim: To see the world stage by stage and hopefully entertain some crowds along the way. Roberts, who was raised on his mom’s vinyl collection – The Beatles, Elvis and The Rolling Stones – defines their music as “Pop rock with a Caribbean twist that tastes like jerk chicken and
lemonade pop.” Full of wisecracks, there are few things the band takes more seriously than their music. Their first tour took place in 2012 and the group has already performed in the UK, Canada and Switzerland. Adding South Africa to the list, The Curious Incident are in the country promoting their new EP, Penny Lonesome. “People can come and expect to fall in love,” they promise. Alluding to their recently released album, Roberts says in his jocular manner: “Penny Lonesome is about not having enough love or money while dancing and having a good time getting it.” v Catch the band on Saturday, live at Rumours, Johannesburg. Doors open at 6pm. Tickets cost only R50. The band will be joined by local rockers Lark. For more information visit thecuriousincident.com

The Birchwood Hotel and OR Tambo Conference Centre now has a new offering – Silverbirch @ Birchwood, a more high-end hotel within the complex. The Silverbirch @ Birchwood is a new concept and fully upgraded hotel within a hotel developed to cater for the needs of discerning business clients. The new hotel is perfect for an overnight stay or for a day or two, either while at a conference or for a gap between flights. Situated in Boksburg, the Birchwood complex isn’t exactly surrounded by tourist hotspots. However, the conference centre is always filled with delegates due to its close proximity to OR Tambo International airport. The conference centre is also the largest business-to-business conferencing facility in the Southern Hemisphere, one of the reasons behind the new facility. The main hotel is situated in 53ha of gardens and features 665 hotel rooms, 60 business conferencing venues and a spa. But Silverbirch @ Birchwood is tucked in a quiet area on the Birchwood property with separate controlled access away from the hustle and bustle of the conferencing area. It also has a dedicated check-in area within the main hotel reception. “Silverbirch affords our dis-

The 153 rooms that have been completed thus far are designed to ensure a peaceful and comfortable night’s rest. Other extras include larger workstations and uncapped high-speed Wi-Fi. The rooms also feature several power points, so laptops, tablets and cellphones can all be recharged at the same time, something a business traveller might enjoy. Silverbirch @ Birchwood also offers its clients a complimentary airport shuttle service and a dedicated porter facility. Fine dining away from the crowds is available at the Grill At One Twenty – a modern grill house. This is good news for anyone who has found themselves on the receiving end of the announcement of a cancelled flight. The airport often puts people up in the hotel until another flight is available. So a few creature comforts will be most welcome while you wait for your trip to begin.
